Samsung Pay is now available to Verizon customers

Back in September, AndroidGuys reported about the new Samsung Pay app being released in the US. Unfortunately, Verizon did not immediately jump on this bandwagon. However, after much deliberation, the company has now made it available to customers.

Up to this point, some phones may have come with the app pre-installed, but without any options to use it. If this is the case, it should automatically update, allowing Verizon customers to use all features of the app. Current supported banks are Bank of America, Citi, US Bank, Synchrony Financial, and American Express, with more to come. You can also contact your bank to find out if they support this service.

Amid all the concerns about stolen credit card numbers and identity theft, I’m glad to see Verizon taking this step and allowing it’s customers another option for a secure, digital wallet service. Due to the new technology, however, Samsung Pay is only available on the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge Plus, and the Galaxy Note 5.

Samsung Galaxy ON5 and ON7 show up in leaked images

Samsung-Galaxy-ON5-front

Samsung will soon be launching the Galaxy ON5 and ON7 in India, but in the meantime, PhoneRadar was able to get their hands on some leaked images of the two Tizen-powered devices.

The design (pictured above) of the two smartphones are reminiscent of that of the Galaxy Note 5. However, they’re certainly not sporting Galaxy Note 5-level specifications. As far as the ON5 goes, you can expect a 5-inch 720p Super AMOLED display. The ON7 is said to feature a much larger 5.5-inch 720p display with the same panel. Both smartphones are rumored to sport an Exynos 3475 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and micro SD support.

The ON5 having a smaller display will get a smaller 2,600mAh battery, and the ON7 will rightfully get the much larger 3,000mAh battery. Interestingly, despite decidedly mid-range specs, the Galaxy ON7 will have a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash.

We’re not quite sure when Samsung will be ready to launch these two Tizen-powered devices, but the ON5 is expected to retail for Rs. 10,000 and the ON7 Rs. 13,000. In the meantime, be sure to hit the source link below for the full gallery of images.

Samsung app gives you a virtual Gear S2 try-on

Samsung Gear S2

You ideally get to try on a smartwatch before you buy it, but that’s seldom easy — you can’t exactly rip a store’s security device off and strap on the watch for a minute. Samsung thinks it can give you the next-closest thing, though. It recently released an experience app for Android that not only gives you a feel for the Gear S2’s interface and apps, but includes an augmented reality view that shows what the circular smartwatch looks like on your wrist. You can even share a snapshot to get a second opinion. It’s still not going to be the same as feeling steel on skin, but you’ll at least know whether or not you’re making a fashion faux pas.

Samsung’s 18.5-inch Galaxy View shows up in newly leaked images

Samsung-Galaxy-View-SamMobile-leak-1

Samsung has some exciting products in the works, but one in particular that has our eye is the Galaxy View. It’s said to have massive 18.4-inch display with mid-range specifications, according to a recent GFXBench leak. And now, SamMobile was able to get their hands on a bundle of promotional images for the device.

Interestingly, Samsung seems to have ditched the home hardware button on this tablet, which makes a lot of sense considering its size. From the pictures below, the device also seems to have some sort of dock that doubles as a carrying bag. In the images we can also see that there’s an auxiliary port, microUSB port (presumably for charging), and another port, though I can’t quite make out what that is exactly.

Samsung-Galaxy-View-SamMobile-leak-2 Samsung-Galaxy-View-SamMobile-leak-3

There’s also a front-facing camera on this monster. It’s obviously not meant for taking stills, but most likely for video calls via Skype, Hangouts, and so on. At this point, the Galaxy View seems very much aimed at Enterprise users, as it really doesn’t make sense otherwise. However, the decidedly low specifications was an interesting choice if it were to be marketed towards that crowd.

Either way, we still haven’t head anything official from Samsung yet. Considering this behemoth has already hit the FCC with AT&T branding, hopefully it won’t be long before we get some more solid details.

For the rest of the leaked images, be sure to hit the source link below.

Latest Samsung Galaxy S7 rumour suggests device will have a 20MP camera

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Another day, another Samsung Galaxy S7 rumour. The last few days have yielded quite a few rumours about the Galaxy S7 including the possible inclusion of something like 3D Touch and a January launch, but today’s rumour surrounds the device’s camera. This year’s Galaxy S6 (and its follow-up flagship devices) used a 16MP camera to great effect – it still holds the second spot on DxOMark’s ladder for all smartphone cameras. The word is, however, that Samsung will instead move to a 20MP camera sensor for next year’s device.

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a 20MP camera sensor – after all, Sony’s been using one for at least 2 years. Since the size of the sensor pixels now apparently matter, it’s said that this sensor will use 1.0-micron pixels, which sounds good – we think. The new sensor will also allegedly improve low-light performance, in particular, however, we do anticipate that whatever Samsung does, it will have one of the best cameras around. Of course, as with all rumours, take all this with a grain of salt.

What do you think about the Samsung Galaxy S7 using a 20MP camera? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Samsung Galaxy S7 may sport a new 20MP camera sensor

Galaxy_S7_20MP_camera_sensor_leak_102015_1Just this week we discovered rumors stating that Samsung’s new Galaxy S7 flagship may launch ahead of when it normally does. Today, judging for a PDF document, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S7 may sport an upgraded 20MP camera.

Samsung is aiming at January as a possible announcement for its upcoming Galaxy S7 flagship. So far there have been numerous rumors regarding which processor the device will use, display size, fordable technology, a dual-camera setup and now it seems that a 20MP camera sensor may be included.Galaxy_S7_20MP_camera_sensor_leak_102015_2

Samsung usually saves it to the S-lineup to up the megapixel count on its smartphones, while the Note series puts more emphasis on software rather than hardware. This makes the Galaxy S7 the likely time Samsung will debut its newest 20MP sensor. According to the leaked document, the sensor sports 1.0 micron-sized pixels. It will also support a new reduced power draw as a result of the company’s new 28nm process. The camera sensor will also likely bring further enhancements to color accuracy and improvements to low-light shots, something Samsung has taken very seriously over recent years. Best of all, this could be the time Samsung implements its new technology making the sensor slimmer thus possibly eliminating a rear protruding camera. But don’t get your hopes up. The technology may still be a ways away.

What are you hoping for in the next generation Galaxy smartphone?

Virgin Mobile launches giving campaign when Canadians buy new goods

virgin_mobile_regen_logo

Virgin Mobile announced today a new fundraiser connected to Canadian sales of the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime smartphone and the Universal Power Bank. The Galaxy Grand Prime has been named the next RE*Generation phone available from the carrier. With that status, for every device sold Virgin Mobile will donate $5 to help at-risk and homeless youth.

Recent statistics show there are around 225,000 Canadian youth who are not working and not in school and thus are considered at-risk. Of those, over 6,000 are homeless and sleep on the streets. The Virgin Mobile RE*Generation program provides funds to a variety of charities throughout Canada who help connect these youth with training and other opportunities to secure meaningful jobs and breakout of their current status. According to Joseph Ottorino, managing director for Virgin Mobile Canada,

“By providing young people with the experience and training they need to get a stable and meaningful job, we can help break the cycle of youth homelessness. We’re excited to be partnering with Samsung, a company that shares our passion for linking youth with the skills, connections and opportunities they need to succeed.”

In addition to the proceeds for phone and charger sales, Canadians on Virgin Mobile can elect to participate in the Change for a Dollar program that adds $1 per month to their bill to be donated to the Virgin Mobile RE*Generation program. All Canadians can text REGEN to 30333 to make a one-time $5 donation.

Virgin Mobile asks Canadians to get the goods that do some good

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime revealed as next RE*Generation Phone

TORONTO, Oct. 20, 2015 /CNW/ – Starting today, $5 from the sale of every Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime and Universal Power Bank purchased from Virgin Mobile will help connect at-risk and homeless youth with the training, skills and opportunities they need to secure meaningful jobs and emerge from the cycle of homelessness.

A recent Virgin Mobile study found that 1 in 3 Canadians know someone who has been homeless. Virgin Mobile RE*Generation was created to give Members and Canadians a chance to help at-risk and homeless youth gain skills to get jobs. Currently, there are approximately 225,000 Canadian youth out of work or not in school, and more than 6,000 of them sleep on the streets on any given night. Donations to Virgin Mobile RE*Generation, through programs like the RE*Generation phone campaign, support charities across Canada that train youth to develop the in-demand skills employers are looking for.

“By providing young people with the experience and training they need to get a stable and meaningful job, we can help break the cycle of youth homelessness,” said Joseph Ottorino, managing director, Virgin Mobile Canada. “We’re excited to be partnering with Samsung, a company that shares our passion for linking youth with the skills, connections and opportunities they need to succeed.”

Canadians can purchase the RE*Generation phone at Virgin Mobile retail and online locations. The Universal Power Bank ($24.99) is available at Virgin Mobile Stores across Canada. Virgin Mobile Members can also help at-risk youth get jobs by adding Change for a Dollar to their monthly phone bill to donate$1/month to Virgin Mobile RE*Generation. OnePlus gets dose of its own medicine, courtesy of Meizu

meizu-pro-5

Continuing its tradition for marketing excellence, last week OnePlus created a new ‘contest’ that asked users to trade in a Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, or Note 5 for a free OnePlus 2. The tech world instantly took to mocking the deal, especially considering the latter two phones are essentially worth double the price tag of OnePlus’ latest flagship. Now Meizu is firing a shot at OnePlus’ marketing campaign by giving OnePlus 2 owners the chance to trade in their phones for a brand new Meizu Pro 5.

While the OnePlus campaign asked us to “#taketheedgeoff”, the Meizu campaign is asking us to “#taketheheatoff”, a jab at the Snapdragon 810.

Honestly, we think this is pretty genius. There are still a lot of people shaking their heads at Oneplus over the Samsung contest, and this is a great way for a Meizu to get some free publicity. But is this deal any better than what OnePlus was offering? Depends on who you ask.

The design of the Meizu Pro 5 is certainly inspired by the iPhone, which could be an immediate turn off for many folks. And the same goes for the heavily skinned Flyme OS, based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. If you can get past that (and throw a good launcher onboard), the Pro 5 actually sports some killer specs.

meizu-pro-5See also: Meizu Pro 5 official with 5.7-inch screen, Exynos 742060

At the heart of the Pro 5 is an Exynos 7420 processor, the same chip used in the Galaxy family that OnePlus was asking you to trade away. Other specs include a 5.7-inch full HD AMOLED display, a 21MP Sony IMX230 camera, a 5MP front cam, 3GB or 4GB RAM, dependent on the 32 or 64GB model, a fingerprint scanner, microSD, Type C with fast charging support, and a 3050 mAh battery.

In the long run, we doubt this will bring Meizu very many new fans, but it’s still great to see someone giving OnePlus a taste of their own medicine. And for what it is worth, the Pro 5 is actually listed at a higher price than the OP2, starting at $438. What do you think of Meizu’s jab at OnePlus? If you had a OP2, would you consider this offer? For those with a OnePlus 2, you can get in on the deal here.

LG and Samsung unveil new battery tech for future wearables

galaxy round spare battery

LG and Samsung have been showing off a selection of new flexible battery cells designed for wearable products at an exhibition in Seoul today. Given the limited space inside wearable products and the long life time demanded from smartwatch consumers, new battery technologies are seen as a key to help drive the market forward.

Samsung SDI unveiled two new types of flexible batteries, a stripe and a band. The stripe battery is just 0.3mm thin and is built from a flexible fibre that enables the cell to bend. This cell is designed for use in very small, thin wearables, such as a necklace, hair band or bracelet. Samsung also has a band-type battery designed for smartwatches, presumably in the wrist band, that can add up to 50 additional battery capacity compared with current designs and can resist over 50,000 bends.

LG Wire Battery

LG Chem showcased its own wire battery technology again at the event, which was originally shown off back in 2013. The wire battery can be bent in half without breaking. The company’s hexagonal battery for smartwatches, which was unveiled earlier in the year, was also on display. This design can potentially double the battery capacity of smartwatches by making better use of the space available inside products.

Samsung’s and LG’s battery divisions are looking to design power cells for the next generation of wearables, as shipments are expected to surpass the 100 million mark in 2020, according to Gartner. Lower performance wearables, such has fitness trackers, have actually proven more popular than expensive smartwatches, which are expected to account for 40 percent of smart wrist devices by 2016, and these thin battery technologies could enable new form factors and products in these categories.
