Reports of layoffs at Samsung surface again, 30% of workforce mentioned

Samsung has had a year of ups and downs – all of the Korean manufacturer’s flagship smartphones have been received extremely well by both media and consumers, however that hasn’t been enough to help its bottom line and attention is again being turned to what Samsung intends to do to right the ship. In a report by The Korea Times today, Samsung officials have pointed to streamlining the company, specifically:

“Samsung’s top priority is to save costs. Average workers with mediocre performance are being advised to leave the company with a sizable compensation.”

That probably sounds pretty cruel, but when the going gets tough, a company’s responsibility is to its investors and succeeding at that means keeping the cream of the crop. It’s alleged that Samsung is also asking individuals to take part in a “voluntary retirement system”. Analysts are expecting Samsung to downsize by cutting 30% of its workforce, a significant markup on the 10% that was rumoured just last month – we’ll just have to see whether Samsung denies these reports this time (or calls them relocations), but it seems likely that Samsung is going to have to lay off some of its workforce sooner or later.

Sign up for Samsung Pay, get a free wireless charger

Samsung Pay press

If you’re the proud owner of a Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge Plus, or a Note 5, then you have the chance to snag a free wireless charging pad from Samsung!

From October 28 to November 8, Samsung is running a promotion to boost the membership of their Samsung Pay service. Owners of the aforementioned devices who sign up for Samsung Pay during this brief window will get a wireless charger mailed to them, no strings attached. You should note that the deal may run out sooner than November 8, as Samsung is limiting the offer to only the first 200,000 participants.

Samsung Pay is the company’s digital payment medium that is accepted practically anywhere you would use a credit card. The service is easy to use, and Samsung boasts that Pay uses several layers of security to keep your information private. They also claim not to store or share payment data.

This isn’t the first time Samsung has offered free stuff for signing up with Pay. The service only came out in September, and already we’re on Round Two of the promotional giveaways. Samsung must want new users on Samsung Pay pretty badly.

There are a handful of usual caveats to the deal. You have to be eighteen or older and live in the US (territories don’t count). You also can’t double-up on hardware if you already got a charger from Samsung during their last promotional deal.

If this sounds like something you want to jump on, head over to the promotional page and enter your email address to register. The site warns that your charger may take eight to ten weeks to arrive. Are you going to spring for this deal? Why or why not? What are your thoughts on Samsung Pay? Let us know in the comments.

The best $500 TV

By Chris Heinonen

This post was done in partnership with The Wirecutter, a buyer’s guide to the best technology. Read the full article here.

After over 100 hours of researching the field and testing five finalists, we found that the Vizio M43-C1 is the best TV that costs around $500. It provides the best image quality under real-world viewing conditions. It also produces contrast ratios that are twice as high as those of competing TVs: Its blacks are twice as dark as competitors’, and its whites are the brightest, great for daytime use in rooms with window reflections. This set has five HDMI inputs, two more than every other TV we tested, and it generates the lowest input lag for the best video gaming performance as well. The fact that it offers UltraHD (or 4K) resolution, instead of 1080p, is a bonus.

Earlier this week, Samsung unveiled its largest device yet, the Galaxy View and today, the company has revealed the larger-than-life tablet will launch in the US on November 6th and will set you back $599 for the Wi-Fi only model. There will also be a model with LTE sold at a later date and past history would suggest that AT&T is the most likely carrier to snap this up.

The Galaxy View is being dubbed as the ultimate entertainment device and is somewhat portable, despite the large 18.4-inch Full HD display. The tablet comes equipped with a video-centric UI that brings on demand video to your fingertips from a range of preloaded and downloadable providers. The majority of the price tag is for this entertainment pack, with the rest of the specs mid-range at the very best.

Under the hood, the Galaxy View is powered by a 1.86GHz octa-core Exynos 7580 processor, 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage that can be expanded using a microSD card. The Galaxy View runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with a custom video interface that’s designed specifically for the big display.

Apple eclipses Samsung smartwatch sales in Q3

samsung gear s2 unboxing aa (6 of 20)

Smartwatches may still not be a hugely popular market segment, but the competition is certainly heating up. Since the launch of the Apple Watch, Samsung has now slipped out of the top spot in the smartwatch market, and has seen its sales eclipsed by its US rival.

According to a market report from Korea, Samsung sold approximately 600,000 wearables device between July and September, which is not too bad. Apple is estimated to have sold an impressive 4.5 million units over the same period, leaving Samsung on just a 9.8 percent global share for Q3 2015 while Apple sales accounted for a huge 72.8 percent. This leaves other smartwatch manufacturers on just 17.4 percent of the market between them.

Of course, many had expected that Apple’s brand appeal would help its first wearable shoot out of the gates. The real test for the Apple Watch will be to see whether this type of sales momentum can be sustained, or if the company’s smartwatch will only have limited appeal to the early adopter crowd.

Samsung is facing an equally tall challenge of its own. The company’s Gear S2 smartwatch is scheduled for its global release over the next quarter, after already apparently getting off to a strong start in South Korea. We found the Gear S2 to be the company’s best smartwatch so far and it is priced far more competitively than Apple’s offering, so it will be very telling if Samsung can’t close the gap on Apple with its latest release.

Despite mixed consumer interest in the market, global smartwatch sales are estimated to have seen a six fold increase over the past twelve months. OEMs are surely keep to stake out a significant early share of this growing market, in case smartwatches finally hit mainstream demand.

Samsung announces big profits for Q3 2015, driven by components business

samsung galaxy logo mwc 2015 1

Samsung’s finances are in a favorable position, for this quarter at least. Earlier today the Korean conglomerate issued official figures for the Q3 2015 ending September 31st. Highlights include 51.68 trillion won ($45.55 billion) in consolidated revenue and 7.39 trillion won ($6.51 billion) in operating profit. This translates to a 6% quarter-on-quarter increase. The success is primarily a result of semiconductor and display panel sales.

Also mentioned was that operating profits increased 500 billion won ($440.6 million) from Q2 due to a favorable exchange rate. So beneficial was the weakened won that it translated to quarterly gains of approximately 800 billion won ($705 million), primarily from component sales.

Particular attention was paid to the fact that Q4 is not expected to yield results of this nature due to a belief the exchange rate will not warrant such a positive impact.

Samsung Q3 2015 Samsung Tomorrow

Display Focus

Flexible OLED displays CES 2014

Samsung plans to put more focus on V-NAND and streamlining its LCD TV production to improve next year’s cash situation, as well as significantly develop the display segment. In particular, the Display Panel segment “posted KRW 7.49 trillion in consolidated revenue and KRW 930 billion in operating profit for the quarter.” This was in part due to OLED panels, whose “earnings increased QoQ due to the release of new high-end smartphone panels for major customers, expansion of the customer base, and higher operation ratio.”

The OEM promised to improve cost competitiveness and reinforce mid-low end device line-ups in Q4. Additionally, the Display Panel segment plans to tackle new challenges, “developing new products to secure new growth engines….we will seek new applications including transparent and mirror displays, along with head-mounted and automotive display among many others.”

Mobile Segment

samsung galaxy note 5 review second batch aa (1 of 15)

The mobile division posted 26.61 trillion won ($23.4 billion) in consolidated revenue and 2.40 trillion won ($2.11 billion) in operating profit for the quarter. This was driven by sales of the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, and both the Galaxy A and Galaxy J series. Profits actually decreased from Q2 due to price reductions on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, and greater sales of non-premium hardware.

Tablet-related sales was reported as in-line with that of last quarter.

As of the time of writing, the stock value has increased approximately 1.3%.

Analysis

These figures are quite good for Samsung. There has been mounting speculation that its premium offerings this year have been unable to recapitulate the success of devices released in the past. In particular the fact that the Galaxy Note 5 has seen limited release, and all premium devices for 2015 to-date are devoid of both microSD support and a user-replaceable battery which has generated a visible outcry among some internet users.

Samsung-Galaxy-View-Hands-On-AA-(19-of-36)

This quarter also marks another period in which Samsung goes head-to-head with Apple, as the latter company released its iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus just a few weeks ago. Q4 will likely be met with further pressure from competitors via the LG V10 and even the HTC A9.

Indeed Samsung’s success this period would appear to be largely based on sheer timing as the exchange rate is cited not only as a major contributor, but as a specific reason next quarter is not likely to offer as much good news. The clear listing of component and display-related business as driving the major sources of income further the belief that smartphones have become an omnipresent commodity of which progressively less people are willing to spend for cash-intensive purchases like flagships.

Samsung’s commitment to trying new things (see the Galaxy View above), as well as increasing investments shows that it has a solid plan in the path forward. Ultimately only time will tell how successful that manages to be.

Samsung’s profits are up in Q3 thanks to the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+

samsung_milk_music_galaxy_note_5_TA

Samsung’s 2015 Q3 earnings are in. They brought in 51.68 trillion won ($45.2 billion) total with an operating profit of 7.4 trillion won (around $6.46 billion). This is up quite a bit from the previous 4.1 trillion won only a year ago.

Samsung makes many products, but it’s mobile division specifically brought in 26.1 trillion won ($22.8 billion) with an operating profit of 2.4 trillion won ($2.1 billion). Again, also up from last year’s 1.75 trillion won ($1.53 billion). Samsung has said that the huge growth was specifically from the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+.

Samsung does not expect it’s Q4 results to be as good and hopes to just maintain. It also expects the growth rate of smartphones to continue to decline in 2016. To counter this, Samsung plan on cutting down on phone models and having a more focused approach.

Aside from phones, Samsung will keep pushing TVs and wearables. They are also working on transparent and mirror displays for cars. Possibly unveiling them in CES this January.
