Oculus Concepts collects experimental mobile VR ‘games’ in one spot

Virtual reality is nothing if not an awesome font for weird little experiences, but they can be kind of difficult to find. Some are on Steam, some are available elsewhere. Oculus is hoping that Oculus Concepts, its new section of the Gear VR’s Oculus Store will make that easier. Concepts, like the name suggests, is a place where developers can toss their games and apps that might not be ready for primetime but are still worth checking out. One of the experiences shown off in official imagery is The Night Cafe: An Immersive Tribute to Van Gogh which was part of the Oculus Mobile VR Jam earlier this year. Like the company notes, some of the biggest VR games hit that status because they were released to the public early. So if you have a shiny new Gear VR and are looking to check out something aside from Netflix, here you go.

Samsung Galaxy J3 is now available in China

Samsung Galaxy J3

Samsung is adding to it’s Galaxy J line up by introducing the Galaxy J3 to China through China Telecom. The Galaxy J3 features a 5-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, 8MP camera, 5MP front camera, and a 2,600mAh battery. It will also ship with Android 5.1.1.

The design is quite nice for a budget level phone, featuring similar styling to the Galaxy S6. It also comes in the three main S6 colors, black, white, and gold. Some may even like it more than the S6 because it has a microSD card slot capable of holding a 128GB microSD card. Unfortunately, Samsung has not listed a price yet.

Samsung’s consumer Gear VR is available now for $99

We knew it was coming, but now it’s finally here. Samsung’s newly improved virtual reality headset, the Gear VR, is launching today in the US for $99. This iteration of the Gear VR is, without a doubt, the most consumer-ready VR headset to date. One of its downsides is that it only works with Samsung’s latest smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge+ — but that’s great news for people who own handsets. As you may recall, Samsung’s Gear VR is powered by Oculus software, and services like Hulu have already announced compatibility with the device. If you’re Stateside, you can grab the Gear VR now from retailers including Amazon and Best Buy. As for worldwide availability, an Oculus spokesperson says that will be announced “soon.”

Virtual reality shooter ‘Gunjack’ is ready for Samsung’s Gear VR

Just in time for today’s launch of Samsung’s consumer Gear VR, developer and publisher CCP is making Gunjack available for the headset. The virtual reality game, powered by Unreal Engine 4, is an arcade shooter that takes places in the EVE sci-fi universe. Once you strap in, you’ll play the role of a gun turret operator, with the goal being to protect your mothership from some menacing pirates. In an interview earlier this year, Gunjack’s producer told us that the title was different from Valkyrie, CCP’s upcoming VR dogfighting simulator, as it required to be developed from the ground-up and with mobile gaming in mind. If you have your shiny new Gear VR all set up, you can grab Gunjack right now from the Oculus store for $10.Slideshow-342508

Samsung launches W2016, a Galaxy S6 trapped inside a flip phone body

samsung w2016 (2)

The Samsung W2016 is a Galaxy S6 trapped inside a flip phone body. Or is it the other way?

Spotted earlier this week in China’s TENAA listings, the W2016 has received a quiet official launch. But that’s about the only quiet thing about this flip phone, which features a decadent Galaxy S6-inspired design and an equally outrageous spec sheet.

Some may call the W2016 excessive. But for Samsung, and presumably certain demographic groups in Asia, this dual-screened device makes total sense. Just like the Galaxy S6, the W2016 comes with a sculpted aluminum frame, a curved metal back, and metallic accents. Even the speaker perforations and USB slot on its bottom evoke Samsung’s early 2015 flagship.

samsung w2016 (1)

Coming in gold or silver, the device is rather heavy, at 204 grams. It’s also 15.1 mm thick when closed, but that’s the price you need to pay for style, not to mention the two 3.9-inch 1280 x 768 AMOLED displays and T9 numeric keypad.

samsung_w2016_1

Specs include an Exynos 7420 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. The rear camera is 16MP, while the front one is 5MP. The device runs the Chinese version of Samsung’s TouchWiz, based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. There’s also wireless charging, a 2000 mAh battery, and dual-SIM LTE.

For all intents and purposes, the W2016 is a genuine, if very unusual, Android flagship.

We don’t have info on the price of the Samsung W2016, or its eventual availability outside of China. For some reason, flip (smart)phones are still a thing in East Asia, but we would be surprised if Samsung sold the W2016 elsewhere.

Samsung Gear VR lands in stores today from Amazon and others

samsung gear vr oculus connect aa (15 of 15)

Right on schedule, the Samsung Gear VR has finally arrived today via Best Buy, Amazon, and AT&T — with T-Mobile also expected to offer the handset starting next week. While Samsung released two “Innovator Editions” of the Gear VR ahead of this one, the new Gear VR is the first fully commercial ready model and comes at a fairly aggressive price of $99.99.

The Gear VR basically sits somewhere between higher-end VR solutions like the Oculus Rift and low-end solutions like Cardboard and its many clones and relatives. Like the Cardboard family, the Gear VR utilizes an existing smartphone as its brains, but unlike the former, the Gear VR has extra sensors and components that help provide a more immersive experience than you’d get with Cardboard. Gear VR also has a much more unified library of games, media apps, and services, and is made in partnership with Oculus — further cementing the fact that this is the real deal.

At launch, there are over a hundred games and apps tailored for the Gear VR, with plenty more to come, including 25 brand new made-for-VR games and experiences arriving in early December.  Some of the most critically acclaimed VR titles available for the Gear VR right now include Land’s End (from UStwo, of Monument Valley fame), Mortal Blitz VR, Netflix, and more. There’s also the Oculus Store — Oculus’ portal to finding great VR-optimized experiences.

Bottom-line, if you’re looking for a mainstream VR experience that isn’t the wild west that is Google’s Cardboard platform, the Gear VR is worthy of your consideration. On the downside, the Gear VR is only compatible with a handful of devices: the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, and the Galaxy Note 5.

Samsung Gear S2 goes under the spotlight in new “Turn the bezel” advertisement

samsung_gear_s2_models_comparisonIn Samsung’s latest advertisement for the Gear S2 smartwatch, the company focuses on the life experiences one can have with just a simple turn of the bezel.

Coming in at over two minutes in length, Samsung’s new advertisement showcases what the Gear S2 brings to the table. Nearly every aspect of the video is framed in a full-circle to represent Samsung’s newest Circular UX. The company shows people standing in a circle formation around the smartwatch display to represent the circular bezel that spins around and around. The people move around the circle just like you would move the bezel. The spinning is paused at multiple apps to show off the experiences one can have with all that Samsung has included. These include the music player, S-health for fitness tracking and heart-rate monitoring and the messaging app. Samsung then writes that the Gear S2 “gets better with every turn.”

Samsung’s Gear S2 is available in stores today. You can check out the advertisement in the video down below.

Samsung launches W2016 with clamshell design, Exynos 7420 SoC and 3GB RAM in China

W2016_KV_m

It might come as a surprise for many but flip phones have a fan following, and Samsung has launched a high-end handset for those who are still hung upon this outdated form-factor. We have been hearing leaks and rumors about the Samsung W2016 for sometime time now, and most of them highlighted the similarities between the specifications of the upcoming clamshell phone and the Galaxy S6.

We had recently informed you that Chinese certification agency TENAA had approved the clamshell version of the Galaxy S6. While the specifications of the handset remain pretty much the same as anticipated, Samsung has decided to call this handset – the W2016 – an unappealing name, if you ask me.

As per the specifications listed on its official page, the W2016 sports dual 3.9-inch Super AMOLED displays of 1,280 x 786 pixels resolution and a T9 keypad. Powered by a 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420 processor and 3 GB of RAM, the smartphone comes with 64 GB on board storage and a combination of 13MP primary and 5MP secondary shooters. As for the design, the flip phone has the same glass and metal sandwich design that we have seen in the Galaxy S6 and the Note 5. On the software front, the device comes preloaded with Android 5.1 Lollipop.

It houses a 2,000 mAh battery, which may be sufficient to for its low resolution display. The device supports wireless and rapid charging just like the Galaxy S6 series.

‘The Martian VR’ teaser flies Gear VR owners to the planet’s surface

The Martian VR Experience -- A picture from inside the helmet of 'The Martian' character Mark Watney

Adding a highlight to the new $99 Gear VR headset launching today, Samsung and Fox are delivering a preview of The Martian VR. When the full experience launches, it will take people directly into the shoes of Matt Damon’s character Mark Watney after being stranded on Mars. That 15 to 20 minute virtual reality trip will launch for “tethered headsets” next year, but today anyone with any of Samsung’s new phones and one of the headset add-ons can take a flight right down to the red planet’s surface and experience “key scenes” in full 360-degree VR.

Galaxy J3⑥ launched in China with 5-inch AMOLED display and 2,600 mAh battery

samsung galaxy j3 6

Remember that time when Samsung said it would cut down on the number of models it released? Well, a year later, it didn’t quite happen. Especially in the entry-level market, where Samsung is happily churning out new models, dumping old naming conventions for new and increasingly fanciful monikers.

Case in point, the Samsung Galaxy J3⑥, which just made its debut in China. Yes, the circled 6 is part of the actual name of the device. Our best guess is it has something to do with the auspicious nature the number 6 has in the Chinese culture. If we’re wrong – and we may very well be – we welcome an explanation.

The Galaxy J3⑥ comes with a 5-inch HD AMOLED display, a technology that so far, has been confined to the upper echelons of Samsung’s product line. The fact that AMOLED is making its way downrange could be a sign that Samsung is pulling all stops in its fight with the Chinese companies that have taken the entry-level market by storm. Two other premium features are rumored to be coming to cheap Samsung devices soon: Samsung Pay and fingerprint sensors.

Z

Other specs of the Galaxy J3⑥ include an unspecified quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1.5GB of RAM, just 8GB of expandable storage, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, and a generous 2,600 mAh battery.

The design of the Galaxy J3 ⑥ includes sculpted sides evoking the Galaxy S6, though this is a plastic construction, despite of the metallic appearance. Available in black, white, and the obligatory gold, the J3⑥ features a plastic rear cover. The device is 7.9 mm in thickness, which is quite good for a budget device.

The Galaxy J3⑥ runs TouchWiz, with a slew of additional apps available on demand.

For now, it appears that the Galaxy J3⑥ is exclusive to China Telecom, though we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung brought it elsewhere, perhaps with some minor modifications. No info on the official price just yet.

The Galaxy J3⑥ will go against phones from Motorola, Huawei, or Xiaomi, plus the OnePlus X (which we just reviewed), and a legion of other Chinese competitors.
