Samsung is said to be skimping on design changes with the Galaxy S7
Approaching the new year means that reports, rumors, and leaks regarding Samsung’s next flagship are coming. Samsung actually understands and has already revealed the processor to be found inside of the upcoming Galaxy S7; however, the company has yet to comment on the recent revelation that the handset will usher in the return of the beloved microSD card slot. On Tuesday, a new report out of Korea claimed that Samsung will be focusing on internal upgrades rather than design with the Galaxy S7.
Here’s what a source told the Korea Times:
“As the S6 and S6 Edge represented progress, the S7 will have improvements both in picture quality, performance and other some new features.
The key point is can consumers enjoy content with enhanced viewing quality and boosted processing speed.”
Samsung allegedly wants to save on design so that it can funnel the extra cash towards specifications. So it won’t be surprising if the Galaxy S7 ends up resembling the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy Note 5 while the processor and camera are way ahead of its predecessors. This could all be what leads to the handset carrying a lower price tag.
There has been some chatter that the Galaxy S7 will be revealed in January at CES 2016, but, historically, Samsung tends to debut its flagship in February at MWC in Barcelona. It doesn’t hurt that Evan Blass has stated AT&T is currently testing the Galaxy S7. For now, I think it’s best to assume that the Galaxy S7 will launch at MWC 2016. If Samsung wants to do it earlier, we’ll be receiving invites for an event at CES in Las Vegas next month.

ASUS ZenFone 2
We told you the Moto G was no longer alone in the battle for the best affordable handset, and one of its closest competitors is definitely the ASUS ZenFone 2. Be sure this is no bad contender. It’s actually a favorite among Android fans, thanks to its accessible price, good size, awesome build quality, vivid screen and more. To be honest, this is the affordable handset I recommend the most, these days.
The only things we complained about during our review were battery life, average camera quality and a weak speaker. But come on, the phone is only $199, and it makes up for those caveats in plenty other areas.

Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3
The Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 is more expensive than the smartphones listed above, but it’s for good reasons. This phone is worth every penny you will spend on it! Especially for those of you who like larger handsets, as this big guy’s screen measures in at 5.5 inches. It’s also more powerful thanks to its Snapdragon 615 processor.
Other specs include 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, a 13 MP rear camera, an 8 MP front camera and a nice 2910 mAh battery. By the way, I happen to love this phone’s attractive, slim and strong design. It will take care of all casual tasks and even some gaming. Furthermore, those front-facing speakers make it sound much better than many other devices (even more expensive ones).

LG Watch Urbane
Once we hit the $250 price point much better wearables start showing up on the list. Of course we will list Android Wear devices here, and the LG Watch Urbane is one of our favorites. This thing is beautiful, has a great battery life, good performance and a classic look that will match even the most elegant suits. It’s one of the best Android wear devices around, and that price point really shows it.
Customers will have to pay $242.79 right now, but it’s worth it for the user who wants a high tech smartwatch without sacrificing on looks. Whoever said high-tech watches had to be ugly?

ASUS ZenWatch 2
LG’s smartwatch may be better looking to some, but the ASUS ZenWatch 2 is definitely not ugly. And considering it’s about $100 less, we know many of you will much rather go with ASUS for your wearable needs.
The ASUS ZenWatch 2 has a great battery life, a fast magnetic charger, different sizes and good performance. Our only complaint is that its bezels are pretty large, just like its predecessor’s. Otherwise, it’s one hell of an Android Wear product!

Pebble Time
I am a loyal Pebble user, and it’s mainly for one reason – battery life. Thanks to its e-paper display, these wearables are able to last nearly a week on a single charge! That’s simply unheard of in the Android Wear world, at least so far. I also happen to like that the UI is simpler and does less things. This is mostly a notification device, and though it can do a few other things, it doesn’t go overboard with fancy animations and gimmicks. What it does, it does very well. And it just so happens to do everything I need it to.
The newer Pebble Time happens to come with a color display, too, which is definitely a plus. The team has also included voice input, new software, more app storage and performance improvements.

And if you want to get fancy, you can also go for a Pebble Time Steel. This is pretty much a Pebble Time made with quality materials. It’s also worth more, though.

It has a low resolution display and performance could be improved, but it makes up for those downsides by offering great audio quality and a battery life that won’t disappoint.

When it comes to compact, affordable tablets, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is actually still among my favorites. This pad is super thin, light and has really small bezels. Factor in the good specs, solid battery life and high-res display and you truly have a winner.
The tablet comes with an 8.4-inch 2560x1600p display, a Samsung Exynos 5 Octa processor, 3 GB of RAM, 16/32 GB of internal storage, an 8 MP camera, a 2.1 MP front shooter and a sizable 4900 mAh battery. Not bad at all, especially starting at $204.22 from Amazon. Honestly, I would say this is the best deal out of the 3 tablets listed here.

Samsung made a web browser for the Gear VR
Yes, there are already plenty of great games for Gear VR, but Samsung wants to keep enriching the platform with content. That’s why it is introducing Internet for Gear VR, a web browser for people who own its smartphone-powered virtual reality headset. The company says you can use this new app, which is currently in beta, to enjoy the internet in a more immersive way. Along with offering support for 360-degree and 3D video streaming, Internet for Gear VR also handles HTML5 media playback. Naturally, you’ll need to type web addresses along the way, so Samsung has added voice recognition to the application.

AT&T and Samsung up the ante with a 64GB Galaxy S6 Active

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Active might not be the most beautiful of devices in the world, but it certainly gives active users a lot more peace of mind then the all glass devices that Samsung has put out this last year. The Active line is one of the few remaining carrier exclusive devices on the market with AT&T holding the device line. I am not sure it would be all that popular on other networks, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt the slumping sales of Samsung to expand the water-resistant powerhouse. The downside of the S6 Active, at least in my eyes, was that Samsung and AT&T only offered it with one storage option, 32GB. While that is more than enough for most, those of us who utilize our devices actively in the middle of no where for photos, videos and movies, are left a bit short on space. It looks like a new storage option is making its way to the public though with a 64GB variant that has appeared on AT&T’s website.
Price wise you are looking at $299 on a new 2-year contract, but those are dead really. On NEXT 24 expect $23.17 per month, NEXT 18 at $28.96 per month and NEXT 12 at $34.75 per month. Opting for the NEXT with down payment you will pay $209.00 up front and $17.36 per month. That all equates to a grand total of $694.99 for the 64GB version which is $100 more than its 32GB little brother. Additionally it appears that all three colors, White, Grey and Blue will be produced.

Running an untouched version of Android Lollipop, the Nexus 6 is among the first to receive an update to the 6.0 Marshmallow build. The 6-inch screen might be a little bigger than you’re familiar with but the reviews and feedback have been solid. Internal storage is tapped at 32GB with no microSD expansion card slot but it should be enough for those who live in the cloud.
HTC One M9
The lone HTC model here is also one of the oldest flagship models to make this list. Don’t let that concern you, though, it’s still a kick-ass phone with a great build. The 5-inch screen looks great and fits well in the hand while the 20-megapixel camera snaps excellent photos. The microSD card keeps media lovers content with room for up to 200GB of external storage.
Motorola Moto X (2nd Generation)
As an ancestor to the Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2, the Moto X (2nd Generation) doesn’t have a ton of Verizon customization. In other words, it’s closer to a stock Android experience than most other phones with only a few added touches. It’s the most wonderful time of the year – to buy a smartphone. With Black Friday behind us and the holiday shopping season off and running, it’s the time of year where many consider a new handset. Announced in the spring, it’s hard to beat the annual Samsung flagship smartphone. It’s the first Galaxy S model we’ve wanted to coddle and protect in a long time. HTC One A9
As the only HTC model on this list, we’re big fans of the new design cues and direction. It’s not necessarily a powerful smartphone, but it’s more than enough for first time buyers with plenty left over. It’s the first non-Nexus handset to run Android 6.0 Marshmallow and enjoys features such as Doze, Android Pay, and Android on Tap. For the first time in a few years we are excited about HTC again and can’t recommend this phone enough for its target demographic. Motorola Moto X (2nd Generation)
The Moto X (2nd Generation) doesn’t have a ton of AT&T customization which means it’s closer to a stock Android experience than most other phones. What is added by Motorola, however, is worth it and only adds to the phone’s value. It’s a little over a year old now, sure, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your attention. If you’re looking for a great Android handset that won’t break the bank, you’ll be wise to consider this one.

AT&T now has a 64GB Galaxy S6 Active
Unlike the Galaxy S4 Active which saw an international release, or even the Galaxy S5 Active which saw two variants, the S6 Active has been an exclusive venture for Samsung and AT&T. Despite initial rumors that suggested the S6 Active would have microSD card support, the product that was produced doesn’t. This had, until now, meant that customers interested in the rugged smartphone needed to make due with just 32GB of on-board storage. Until now.
AT&T has just put up a 64GB variant of the Galaxy S6 Active for sale. It retails for $649.99 for those interested in purchasing the device off-contract. Alternatively, a 2-year carrier agreement will drop the price down to $299.99, and those qualified and interested in purchasing via AT&T Next can have the phone for installments of $23.17 per month.

For those in need of a recap, the S6 Active has essentially the same specs as Samsung’s Galaxy S6, but with a few improvements. It packs a 5.1-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, an Exynos 7420 SoC, 3GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel rear camera (no optical image stabilization) and a 5-megapixel front camera. Aside from being a thoroughly rugged device and water resistant, the phone also makes use of a 3,500 mAh battery to supplement its substance.
The S6 Active is sold in Grey, Camo White, and Camo Black and all three are now available in 64GB configurations.
Samsung replaces its head of mobile operations
Today Samsung has announced that its head of mobile communications, Shin Jong-Kyun, and another co-chief executive officer, B.K. Yoon, will be stepping back from day-to-day operations. Kyun, a nine year veteran at the company, will be replaced by Koh Dong-Jin, who was involved with the launch of the Galaxy S6 and Note 5.
Shin Jong-Kyun was involved with a lot of the early success of the Galaxy smartphone line and his time at Samsung isn’t over. Kyun will remain as president and co-CEO of the main Samsung electronics mobile division, working on longer term strategies rather than day-to-day operations. Former head of Samsung’s consumer electronics division, Koh Dong-Jin, is making a similar move and will also stay on as a co-CEO of Samsung’s main electronics business.

The announcement comes after another questionable year for Samsung’s mobile division. Although well received by critics and consumers, this year’s Galaxy S6 series has not set a new record for mobile shipments as Shin had expected. In fact, Samsung saw a 38 percent drop in its mobile profits for the launch quarter of the Galaxy S6, as more expensive components and excess unsold stock drove up the division’s costs.

Coupling this misjudge demand with a shrinking global market share and increasing competition from lower cost Chinese rivals, Samsung’s mobile revenue has missed the mark repeatedly in 2015. Although, the company still managed to post a notable boost in overall revenue in Q3, mostly due to its booming semiconductor business.
Samsung’s latest management reconfiguration is the latest in a string of shake-ups in the past twelve months, which also saw three marketing executives resign last year. Perhaps these changes will lead to better fortunes next year.
Samsung replaces its smartphone chief
Samsung Mobile’s top execs held on for a while during the company’s troubled time with smartphones, but it’s apparently been long enough. JK Shin, in addition to another co-CEO, (Samsung’s exec lineup is a… multi-layered one), will withdraw from daily operations, replaced by DJ Koh, a mobile exec who previously oversaw Samsung’s barely-nascent Tizen mobile OS and Samsung Pay — neither of which are international success stories (yet?). At the same time, Samsung’s head of TVs and home appliances, BK Yoon, is being moved on to focus on “long-term strategy”.

More Chinese manufactures are making their own chips
It seems like every manufacture is making their own chips now a days. It used to be just the biggest manufactures like Apple and Samsung making their own chips, but now more and more Chinese manufactures are getting in on the action.
ZTE has just recently received CNY2.4 billion (US$73.8 million) from China’s National IC Industry Investment Fund. This money will be used to help accelerate their mobile chip development.
Xiaomi is another China based manufacture that will be partnering with chip designer Leadcore Technology to co-develop ARM-based SoCs for Xiaomi’s 2016 device line up.
Finally, Huawei already provides chips to many smartphone vendor’s phones. However, they are doing so well that they are becoming a real problem to mainstream chip companies like MediaTek and Qualcomm.
