Latest IDC wearable numbers show Xiaomi’s continued surge

While there was no change in the top two spots for the Q3 2015 IDC wearable numbers, Xiaomi made a staggering jump. In terms of market share, Fitbit is still in the top spot with a 22 percent market share and 4.7 million units shipped in the quarter. The company’s numbers were padded by the fact that a number employers are giving their workers Fitbit devices, including Target’s order of 335,000. Apple remains at number two, where it debuted in Q2. Cupertino shipped 3.9 million units, aided by both the release of WatchOS 2 and its gadgets going on sale in more locales.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is coming to the UK after all. Probably.

When the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 was announced back in August, it was the phablet that everyone was expecting, but for the people in the UK, it was the device that they could never get their hands on (at least, not though official channels). There was the suggestion that it would never be released there, but it appears that rumour was either untrue or Samsung has had a change of heart as there are fresh reports that the Galaxy Note 5 is coming to the UK after all.

According to a source speaking with Gadgette, the Galaxy Note 5 is going to be released in the UK in January 2016, almost 6 months after its initial release, and if the rumours are correct, the same time that Samsung announces its 2016 flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S7. If this turns out to be true, this may bum out Samsung fans who bought the Galaxy S6 Edge+ believing the Note 5 would never come to the UK – and we’d be interested to know why Samsung thought now is a good time to change its game plan.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 coming to the UK this January

Galaxy_Note_5_Pink_Gold_and_Silver_Titanium

The Galaxy Note series is one of Samsung’s most popular lines. Everyone instantly knows it’s a Samsung Galaxy Note the second they see the S Pen come out . However, it was quite strange that the Note 5 didn’t make its way to UK shores when it launched around the world.

Since then, we have heard no plans from Samsung to bring the Note 5 to the UK. However, we have been hearing rumours that Samsung will launch the Note 5 in the UK in late January 2016. Why an almost six month wait? We aren’t sure, but better late than never I guess. Also, to add some credibility to this rumour, the source this information is coming from is the same one who originally told us the Note 5 wouldn’t be launching in the UK before the Samsung press event happened.

Samsung Electronics president: “Next year will be tough”

Samsung President Ko

Reporters interviewing the new head of Samsung Electronics. Notice the phones they are using: LG, Apple…

Yonhap

For those Samsung fans who have been following the company in the news recently, there is a recurring theme going on: performance and change. The OEM’s Q3 earnings were quite profitable though due to component sales and a favorable exchange rate, not smartphone sales. Last month the conglomerate’s CEO said “if we resist changes, then we won’t survive” and just this week J.K. Shin was replaced as the head of Samsung Electronics.

Dong-jin Ko, who replaces Mr. Shin, told reporters earlier today that, “Next year will be tough” and that he doesn’t anticipate the mobile segment to see a “huge upturn”.

Mr. Ko’s remarks came following a weekly meeting with key leaders of Samsung Group affiliates, and included commentary that he will be working closely with J.K. Shin, who was recently reassigned to mid-term strategies. Still, Mr. Ko sought to downplay any panic that might possibly ensue, stating that, “No major organizational overhaul is set” because the business is not in “deep trouble.”

Samsung is hoping that products like the newly announced, refreshed Galaxy A7 will be a hit.

Samsung has been facing keen competition in recent years from Chinese OEMs, and with it diminishing market share and profits. In a new report yesterday, insider sources claimed that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will forgo a major design refresh and instead focus on internal component upgrades such as the SoC, display, camera, and memory. Rumors have also been circulating that the S7 will see a return to microSD support after Samsung chose to remove it this year, much to the displeasure of some long-time customers.

Samsung uploads new Galaxy Tab S2 Santa TVC

samsung_galaxy_tab_s2_ad_screenshot

Just this morning Samsung uploaded a new Galaxy Tab S2 TVC.

Samsung’s latest TVC for the Galaxy Tab S2 takes a holiday approach. The ad features a little girl repeatedly asking, who we could assume is her father, when Santa is coming. After a long night, the father reads his daughter a Christmas story from his Galaxy Tab S2 to pass the time. Samsung says “if it’s waiting time, it’s Tab time.”

Samsung is clearly pushing its Galaxy Tab S2 and wants us to realize how much the tablet has to offer that can fill the time. The Galaxy Tab S2 comes in black and white color options and is up for purchase today. You can find it in a majority of retail stores such as Best Buy or search it online on Amazon. Samsung will most likely have the slate on a discounted sale price sometime between now and the holidays so keep an eye out if you want to get the best deal. You can watch the full TVC down below or check out another advertisement for the handset here.

Galaxy A 2016 brings Samsung Pay to budget phones

Samsung’s Galaxy S and Note smartphones usually get the most fuss, but it’s arguably the Galaxy A series that matters most. These are the affordable phones that you’re more likely to see in some parts of the world, and they’re what keep the company going. It’s a big deal, then, that Samsung just launched 2016 upgrades to the entire Galaxy A line. The 4.7-inch A3, 5.2-inch A5 and 5.5-inch are all sleeker than their ancestors, with narrower bezels and other cues clearly borrowed from the Galaxy S6. However, the real selling point may be shopping. Both the A5 and A7 are the company’s first non-flagships to support Samsung Pay — you no longer need to splurge just to use a Galaxy phone in place of your credit card.

Unfortunately, no new information was supplied with regards to a release date for the update, but an alleged upgrade roadmap suggests that both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will see Android 6.0 touch down some time before the end of this month. Be sure to stay tuned for details, as we’ll let you know as and when it starts rolling out.

GalaxyA2016_A7

Samsung has just unveiled the Galaxy A3, Galaxy A5, and Galaxy A7. However, all of them look quite similar to the premium Galaxy S6.

They all feature glass backs, aluminum frames, and unibody designs. It goes way beyond just the design that is similar to the S6, even the insides are similar. The A5 and A7 feature cameras that have OIS, fingerprint sensors, Samsung Pay support, and more.

Samsung’s new mid-rangers borrow features and design cues from the Galaxy S6

samsung galaxy a7 press

Samsung just took the veils off the 2016 Galaxy A3, Galaxy A5, and Galaxy A7, its new upper mid-range devices featuring design and functionality borrowed from the top of the line Galaxy S6.

The Galaxy A (2016) series is the sequel to the Galaxy A3 and A5, that Samsung announced last October and released in December 2015. The original Galaxy A devices marked a departure from Samsung’s usual focus on plastic by featuring metallic unibodies. Now the Galaxy A (2016) series continues on the same path with a Galaxy S6-inspired design featuring aluminum frames and glass backs.

But the Galaxy A5 and A7 (2016) take more than design cues from the flagship Galaxy. The two devices include functionality that just a couple years ago were reserved for the rarefied elite of the ecosystem: cameras with optical image stabilization, fingerprint sensors, and Samsung Pay integration. Only the A5 (5.2-inch, Full HD) and the A7 (5.5-inch, Full HD) offer these perks. The smallest member of the family, the 4.7-inch A3 is less endowed, but its specs are still decent. This confirms reports from last month about the migration of certain features down Samsung’s mid- and entry-level range.

All three Galaxy A (2016) devices feature AMOLED panels, 13MP rear cameras (with double tap to launch), and 5MP frontal ones, LTE, microSD, and Android 5.1. The A7 features an octa-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz, paired with 3GB of RAM. The A5 comes with the same processor, but just 2GB of RAM, while the humble A3 features 1.5 GHz quad core processor and just 1.5GB of RAM.

Samsung only announced that the Galaxy A (2016) series will become available in China from this month. The launch in other markets from around the world will come in the new year.

Samsung kills its camera and camcorder business in the UK

First it was laptops and Chromebooks, now it’s cameras and camcorders. In a statement to TechRadar, Samsung has confirmed that it’s quietly abandoning both product categories in the UK. Why? “Sustained decline in demand,” according to the company. That means you’ll no longer see its DSLR-inspired NX1 or its sleek, mirrorless NX500 on store shelves.
