Samsung Galaxy S7 will have a pressure-sensitive display, à la Apple’s “3D Touch”

The smartphone industry is primarily driven by innovation and imitation – if you aren’t creating something new, you’re generally copying it and putting your own twist on it. It’s accepted practice, and it’s how you either stay with the pack, or surge ahead – in Samsung‘s case in 2016, they might have to do a bit of copying. Apple launched its latest devices this September with a pressure-sensitive display technology that they dubbed “3D Touch“, and frankly while it’s applications are kind of limited for the everyday user, it’s something to market, and predictably, the Wall Street Journal has it on good authority that the Samsung Galaxy S7 will have a pressure-sensitive display to match Apple’s efforts.

This should really surprise nobody as 3D Touch was the main attraction of Apple’s latest devices. Also in the not-surprising bucket is assertions that Samsung will again be releasing two devices at the same time, the Galaxy S7 and its companion Galaxy S7 edge. It’s said that the design for these new flagships won’t differ that much from this year’s design and that has so far been supported by a number of rumours. Whatever the case, it’s going to be interesting to see how Samsung follows up from this year’s effort.

New list of Samsung devices getting the Android 6.0 update leaks out

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

With each passing month, there seems to be a new list of Samsung devices getting the Android 6.0 update and it would appear that this month is no different. Thanks to a new leak from SamsungViet, a new list of so-called “confirmed” Samsung devices getting the Android Marshmallow update was made available today, showing quite a few devices that weren’t mentioned in previous leaks. Notably, this list includes some of Samsung’s tablets, though perhaps not as many as we were expecting. It’s also a shame that it’s not the Android 6.0.1 update that Google just rolled out, but an update’s an update.

Samsung devices getting the Android 6.0 updateThe list suggests that 12 Samsung devices will be receiving the update in Q1 2016, which seems plausible – we should keep in mind though that these are only guidelines and chances are the actual dates may slip depending on how smoothly it all goes for Samsung. Having said that, Samsung might be well prepared for this round of updates after the Marshmallow update appeared on some Galaxy Note 4 devices in Hungary earlier this month. That might have only been by accident, but we’ll take it as a sign anyway.

Samsung appeals to Supreme Court regarding Apple design patents

supreme_court_building

Earlier this month it was revealed Samsung agreed to pay Apple over half a billion dollar settlement from their historic patent battle of a few years ago. Samsung said they reserved the right to claw back some of the payment if a planned appeal to the Supreme Court was successful, indicating the case would continue despite the payment. Today Samsung filed an appeal with the Supreme Court concerning how the court handled design patent violations in the Apple case.

Although Samsung is appealing specific findings in their case with Apple, their arguments are based on a wider front in which they claim courts are mishandling design patents at contention in lawsuits. Samsung says judges are only providing limited guidance to juries about how to interpret design patents and what they may apply to. This is contrasted with utility patents in which very specific instructions are provided.

Samsung also claims the way damages are calculated could result in companies paying damages that are several times larger than the profits made on a product found to infringe on a design patent if multiple patents are violated. The end result is a situation in which design patent trolls are encouraged to engage in litigation. This will also result in stifled innovation and fewer choices for consumers, a point Samsung has tried to make in the past.

Samsung officially takes the Apple Patent case to the Supreme Court

samsung-logo-mwc-2015-8

Today Samsung filed a 219-page appeal requesting that the Supreme Court rule on the legitimacy of Apple’s patent infringement case. Samsung already paid a settlement amount, but they are still disputing the ruling, which initially awarded Apple $930 million in damages. Although the Korean company whittled this amount down considerably in later court dates before paying $548 million earlier this month, they believe that the ruling sets a precedent that discourages innovation and competition while at the same time encouraging frivolous patent litigation.

The two juries in the original case were presented with evidence that Samsung had infringed on Apple’s patented technology. These technologies include things like swipe gestures and tap to zoom capabilities. Samsung claims that the juries were not given enough information to understand the nuances of the case, and that the judge instructed them to make their decision based on the general similarity of appearance between Apple and Samsung’s products.

The company released the following statement:

“Samsung is escalating this case because it believes that the way the laws were interpreted is not in line with modern times. If the current legal precedent stands, it could diminish innovation, stifle competition, pave the way for design patent troll litigation and negatively impact the economy and consumers.”

In addition to disputing the way in which the case was decided, Samsung is also claiming that the way design patent damages are calculated in general is flawed. They describe a situation in which current design patent rules are applied to a hypothetical case in a way that would see the infringing company paying out several times the total value of its profits.

Samsung and Apple have agreed to set aside all court cases related to this issue outside of the United States, so however matters are settled here will have lasting and worldwide effect. It looks like this is World 8 Mario Brothers for the patent case that has spanned four continents, lasted four years, and which has already cost Samsung over a half a billion dollars.  If the US Supreme Court takes on the case, it will be the first design patent reviewed at this level in over 120 years.

Samsung Appeals to U.S. Supreme Court in Last Effort to Avoid $548 Million Apple Payment

Samsung today asked the United States Supreme Court to hear its latest appeal in its ongoing patent battle with Apple, reports Re/code. In August, following a rejection from the U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, Samsung said it would take its case to the Supreme Court by November, and it has now followed through with those plans.

In its appeal, which also includes a wider criticism on patent law, Samsung says the jury was not provided with enough information to understand the patents, a problem it says afflicts many design patent cases.

applevsamsung

“Samsung is escalating this case because it believes that the way the laws were interpreted is not in line with modern times,” it said in a statement. “If the current legal precedent stands, it could diminish innovation, stifle competition, pave the way for design patent troll litigation and negatively impact the economy and consumers.”

Samsung has already agreed to pay a $548 million settlement to Apple, with the full sum expected to be paid by today, but should the Supreme Court rule in Samsung’s favor, there is a clause that would require Apple to pay back the money.

Apple and Samsung have been battling over patent infringement issues since 2012, when a jury ruled Samsung willfully violated multiple Apple patents, resulting in $1 billion in damages. Since then, Samsung has been fighting the ruling. Over the course of several appeals and a partial retrial, Samsung has gotten the damages reduced to the $548 million total.

Samsung’s appeal to the Supreme Court is a last ditch effort. Should the Supreme Court refuse to hear its appeal or rule in Apple’s favor, Samsung will not be able to recoup the $548 million it is paying to Apple. Samsung could have some difficulty convincing the Supreme Court to look at its case, as the court is notoriously selective about the cases it agrees to hear.

Meet the firm designing futuristic UI for Iron Man and Samsung

Remember Tony Stark’s glass smartphone and transparent coffee table in the Iron Man movies? Or how about that gorgeous statue rendering of the Avengers in action at the end of Age of Ultron? You’ve got one company to thank for those sequences: Perception, a New York City-based visual design firm. It’s carved out a unique spot building forward-thinking design concepts for films and major tech companies, including the likes of Samsung, Microsoft and Ford. Perception’s work makes it clear we’ve moved on from the days when interface design was merely an afterthought for movies, and when few tech companies brought cinematic depth and emotion to their products. Now, there’s a sort of virtuous cycle of design, where movies lift from tech, and tech companies find inspiration in films.

Meet the Company Designing Futuristic UI for Samsung and Tony Stark

Perception started in 2001 as a high-end motion graphics firm founded by Danny Gonzalez and Jeremy Lasky. It initially served broadcast studios, ad firms and just about anyone looking for spiffy visual effects. “When you see holograms, or fantastical interfaces in blockbuster movies, we deliver our version of the future to those films,” said John LePore, Perception’s creative director. “And we spend the other half of the time creating concepts for next-generation technologies or particular user interfaces.”

After working with Marvel on a few of its direct-to-video animated films, the studio was brought in for its first major film project: Iron Man 2. At first, it was tasked with generating an interface for a massive screen at the Stark Expo early on in the movie. But as they were meeting with Marvel, they also heard some rumblings about a “glass phone” that Tony Stark would be carrying throughout the film.

Starting with that kernel of an idea, the Perception team mocked up their vision for a glass phone interface back at the office. As LePore tells us, they had a slab of glass cut out in the shape of a phone and used that to produce a demo video for Marvel. In the end, it was so well received that Perception wound up producing the interfaces for Stark’s bevy of gadgets, including his transparent coffee table and omnipresent household screens.

You’ll notice a common style throughout all of those interfaces: They’re dynamic and somewhat ostentatious, but at the same time they’re also surprisingly pragmatic. Basically, exactly what you’d expect from an egotistical playboy super genius who managed to build a suit of robot armor in a cave (with a box of scraps!). Perception isn’t only crafting pretty graphics; it’s also trying to give us some insight into the people who use those interfaces.

Iron Man 2 was an auspicious start for the company, as Marvel ended up tapping it for a variety of other projects. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Perception developed the windshield interface for Nick Fury’s car, as well as the montage sequence that (spoiler) revealed the depths of Hydra’s infiltration into world governments. It was also responsible for designing the elaborate supercomputer housing Arnim Zola’s personality, which was powered by old-school tape drives and displayed on green monitors.

“It’s almost like his soul was inside the machine,” LePore said. “To be able to do that in a way that was both low-fi, and make it feel he was taxing these systems as much as they could possibly handle. … It was a really interesting instance where we’re not just making UI that follows the personality traits of the person that’s using it, but the UI itself is the personality.”

Perception’s high-profile film work attracted a bevy of technology clients, most of which you’ve probably heard of. Samsung tapped it to work on some next-generation interface concepts, and the Korean company ended up using some of its ideas in its TouchWiz interface. They were even brought on to work on augmented reality concepts for HoloLens by Microsoft before Perception even knew what that product was. (Unfortunately, it can’t say what, exactly, it built for HoloLens.) And who can forget the Grid 10 tablet from Fusion Garage, whose only redeeming quality was an intriguing grid interface that Perception built from scratch?

The all-new Ford GT supercar sports a purposeful two-seat cockpit that provides state-of-the-art technology to ensure control, comfort and safety.

While much of the company’s tech contributions remain under wraps, Perception’s work has been featured in some recent high-profile announcements. Its dashboard interface sits at the heart of Ford’s 2017 GT supercar, as well as recent SpaceX streams. It’s also working with IBM, Intel, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, among others.

If you’ve ever heard anyone compare an interface to Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report, you’re probably well aware that there’s a pretty close relationship between techies and sci-fi films. LePore says that’s particularly true for the Perception crew. “There’s certainly a lot of people from the tech world who say, ‘I’d like to take what we saw in this film and make it a reality,’” he said. Similarly, Perception’s experience working with real-world tech helps to bring a dose of reality to films. Working with SpaceX, for example, comes in handy when designing aeronautical interfaces for movies.

It makes sense for movie studios to enlist extra design help, but it’s surprising that so many tech companies are doing the same. You can chalk that up to the rising emphasis on distinctive design. While Apple has always emphasized aesthetics, that hasn’t been a driving force for competitors like Microsoft and Samsung. So they look to companies like Perception for the equivalent of a creative booster shot. Just compare what Samsung’s TouchWiz UI looked like a few years ago to today, where it’s now influenced by Perception’s designs.

While there’s no shortage of motion graphics firms out there, for the most part they focus on film and television. Only a few dabble in technology projects. Perception’s ability to straddle those two worlds is a sign of our maturing design tastes. Most of us are carrying touchscreen computers in our pockets, and our mobile apps look years beyond the blocky desktop programs we used to rely on. Bad design simply can’t cut it anymore when we’re used to something better.

Check back soon for our in-depth story on how Perception designed the Avengers monument from Age of Ultron.

Leaked specs for Samsung Galaxy A9 surface

samsung_galaxy_a9_leaked_specs_01

Some sources have suggested that Samsung may be planning to launch another device in their Galaxy A series of mid-range smartphones at CES 2016. If that was the case, it looks like someone let the cat out of the bag early as information alleging to be full specs and features for the Samsung Galaxy A9 surfaced on the Internet.

According to the information, the Galaxy A9 will come with a 6-inch full HD AMOLED display powered by a Snapdragon 620 processor. The device will also have 3 GB of RAM packed in and a large 4,000 mAh battery providing the juice. Despite this rather robust hardware set, the Galaxy A9 will be considered a mid-range phone and while toward the top of that segment, the price tag is still expected to come in at only around $500 USD.

Some of the extra hardware the device includes is an 8MP front-facing camera and 13MP rear-facing camera and a fingerprint scanner built into the home button. Sources indicate the Galaxy A9 will ship with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, but Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be on the way.

From a design standpoint, the Galaxy A9 appears to carry on the cues provided by the Galaxy A7 with lots of glass and metal.

There was no information provided about eventual markets for the Galaxy A9 and whether it will make it out of the Asian markets.

[Deal] T-Mobile offering $75 off flagships from Samsung and LG

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Back_Lower_S6_Logo_02_TA

T-Mobile today announced that it will be offering discounts on off-contract purchases of the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, and LG V10. With the holidays just around the corner, these discounts come just in time. All you have to do is add the off-contract version of the device to your cart, and apply promo code DEAL75OFF at checkout.

Some of these are actually really sweet. For instance, the Galaxy S6 recently got a price cut, bringing the device down to just $580 off-contract, no doubt because the rumored Galaxy S7 is getting closer and closer. But by applying that $75 discount, you can pick up a brand spankin’ new flagship for just $505. Or, if you’d prefer LG’s all-new V10, you can snag it from T-Mobile for a meager $525, down from $600. And don’t forget about the promotion that gets you a free battery and microSD card as well!

On the more expensive side of things is the Galaxy Note 5, costing about $100 more than the LG V10 at $625, down from its original price point of $700.

Anyone plan on picking one of these handsets up?

Galaxy S7 to Feature Pressure-Sensitive Display Similar to 3D Touch

Samsung-Galaxy-S6-Edge-Plus-250x316Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge due early next year will feature a pressure-sensitive display that functions similarly to 3D Touch on iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The next-generation Android-based smartphones will reportedly also feature high-speed USB-C ports that provide up to a full day’s charge in under 30 minutes, and improved cameras that are optimized for low-light photography.

The report claims the Galaxy S7 will look similar to the Galaxy S6, but the rear-facing camera is said to be flush with the back of the device. The handset may also feature a retina scanner for new biometric features involving a user’s eyes.

The Wall Street Journal says the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will launch in the U.S. in March, possibly around the time Apple introduces the so-called “iPhone 6c” and next-generation Apple Watch. Samsung is expected to announce the new devices around the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona in late February.

Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge would compete with the rumored “iPhone 7,” which could ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack in favor of an all-in-one Lightning connector alongside a faster A10 chip, new Intel LTE modem and possibly thinner design. Apple’s next flagship smartphones will likely be released next September.
