Samsung Galaxy Note 5 variant containing 128GB of onboard storage launches in South Korea

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_5_silver_gold_128GB_121815

Ever since the launch of the Galaxy Note 5, there’s been a number of complaints pertaining to the removal of the microSD card slot. At launch, Samsung limited the options to only 32GB and 64GB of non-expandable internal storage, which left many wanting more.

Earlier today Samsung launched a 128GB variant of the Galaxy Note 5 that it’s calling the ‘Winter Edition.’ The handset is only available in South Korea at the moment, however there’s still a possibility that Samsung will introduce the Winter Edition Galaxy Note 5 in more countries down the road.

The Galaxy Note 5 Winter Edition is available in choice of titanium silver and gold platinum. Samsung said it chose these two color options because of their high popularity. The 128GB variant will carry a 999,900 KRW price tag, which is equivalent to approximately $846 USD.

Report: Samsung Galaxy S7 to have software optimization that rivals the iPhone

This year’s Samsung Galaxy S6 finally brought the major shakeup in design that many had long been hoping for, alongside tweaks and improvements to Touchwiz that made it a bit more streamlined than in years past. While the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge weren’t without their faults, there’s no denying that their arrival signaled a new era for Samsung. Now the question is where Samsung will go from here.

The rumor mill has been churning with increased intensity as of late and we are starting to get a clearer picture of what the Samsung Galaxy S7 will bring to the table. First, we can reportedly expect only minor changes in design this time around, though the microSD slot could be making a much desired comeback.

Where the Galaxy S7 could really shine is in the software. A new report out of China suggests that Samsung is taking a software-centric approach to their Next Big Thing, and no that doesn’t mean throwing on a bunch of unnecessary extra software features (that’s what the Galaxy S4 and S5 were for).

Reportedly, Samsung has actually teamed up with Google engineers to help optimize and reform TouchWiz in a way that goes above and beyond the positive steps we saw with TouchWiz in 2015. Supposedly Samsung is aiming for optimization levels that would rival or even exceed what Apple has accomplished with iOS.

A lofty goal to say the least. After all, Apple is able to achieve its level of optimization due to its tight control of iOS, an advantage Samsung simply doesn’t have. Regardless, if the rumors prove true, that means we could be looking at a slimmer, faster, and more optimized software experience with the Galaxy S7.

You might be wondering if Google would really lend its engineers to Samsung in such a manner. While the legitimacy of this claim is unknown, we can say that it makes sense on some level. For many casual consumers, there are two accepted choices for smartphones if you want to be trendy: a Galaxy or an iPhone. That means the first taste of Android for many users comes from those who buy a Samsung Galaxy device, and so it isn’t surprising that Google would want to work with Samsung to ensure that the experience is a pleasant one.

For now, we’d take the entire report with a healthy dose of skepticism, but we can’t help but be a little excited over the prospect of a ultra-optimized Samsung Galaxy software experience.

What do you think, would you purchase a Galaxy S7 with more optimized TouchWiz onboard? Do you think that Samsung could achieve the kind of optimization it is hoping for? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Pink Gold Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ hits China

As the days countdown until Samsung announces its new flagships, the Korean OEM still seems smitten with its summer smartphones: today a 128GB Galaxy Note 5 Winter Edition was announced for its home territory, and now it seems a Pink Gold Galaxy S6 Edge+ has been made and manufactured for China!

Pink Gold 6 Edge Plus

Spec-wise the phone is the same as standard Galaxy S6 Edge+ units, save for the removal of all Google-related services and framework. The phone looks to have the same reflective “mirrored” surface as the Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium variants.

At the moment it is not clear as to if Samsung plans to release this color variant in other territories. Given the fact that the Galaxy S6 Edge+ has not been reported to have stellar sales, it seems less likely. On the other hand, given said sales situation, the device might become more desirable with a new look.

For reference, a Pink colored Galaxy Note 5 was released in South Korea a few months back.

Any thoughts on this latest and perhaps – depending on opinion – greatest looking Galaxy S6 Edge+ yet? Would you consider importing one to have a rare color? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!

Samsung announces the Galaxy Note 5 Winter Edition for South Korea: 128GB of storage

Gold Galaxy Note 5 1

With the year quickly coming to a close, discounts and deals become an increasingly major mention around the tech blogosphere. While December mentions of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 might seemingly be primed for promotions, it seems that South Korea will see something else entirely. Today Samsung has announced that a Galaxy Note 5 Winter Edition will hit its country of origin, and with it one specific and startling selling point:

The Galaxy Note 5 Winter Edition comes with 128GB of on-board storage, making it the first and only plus-sized flagship the company released this year with such a high storage configuration. It is available now from SKT and KT, and is sold in both Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium color options with a retail price of 999,900 KRW (about $846).

Curiously Samsung’s official blog claims that these two colors are “continuously popular” in the country yet to this day, the Silver Titanium Galaxy S6 Edge+ has not been released in Korea.

Darling details and sizzling speculation

samsung galaxy note 5 review aa (10 of 32)

Despite rumors and inaccurate listing specifying that Samsung would release 128GB configurations of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+, none where ever produced. This, despite the company’s much debated decision to remove expandable microSD storage from its 2015 offerings.

In addition to the new, increased storage situation, Samsung is also running some proper promotions in South Korea. Customers who purchase the Galaxy Note 5 will receive a free wireless charging pod. Customers who purchase a Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge+ will receive a free Gear VR headset.

With the Galaxy Note 5 is already approach the 6-month mark since its release, it’s likely this will be the last itinerant of the hardware before the company switches gear to selling an S7, and eventually a Note 6.

samsung galaxy note 5 review aa (15 of 32)

The potential for this device to release outside Korea is quite low, however it could be added to the pending large scale roll-out in Europe. It’s also worth mentioning that Samsung has recently added a 64GB variant of the Galaxy S6 Active despite said hardware having originally released in June.

While it’s inevitable that some will seek to import this pretty pricey purchase (just wait until eBay sellers get their hands on it), the aftermath of this announcement will inevitably be followed by harsh criticism and complaints at the Korean OEM for failing to release such a product earlier, and to have made it a standard storage configuration.

We are thus ever eager to hear what’s on your mind. Is this the opportune opportunity to purchase the product, or does it have you looking at your own “meager” storage supply with a dead set dose of evil eye? Feel free to take the survey below and then share your thoughts!

Samsung teaming up with Google to make TouchWiz better than iOS

samsung_unpacked_2015_galaxy_s6_edge_plus_front_bottom_home_TA

TouchWiz, everyones favorite Android skin… Ok, not exactly, but at least Samsung has been working on improving it over the years. The current version is a much more stripped down version than it used to be. However, TouchWiz might become even smoother when it launches on the Galaxy S7.

There has been some rumours circulating saying Google may be working with Samsung to make TouchWhiz much more fluent. The rumours say Google engineers are said to be directly helping Samsung with TouchWhiz’s code, so it can have “greater fluency than iOS”. Bold words, but we can only hope it’s true.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge used to make a professional quality short film

samsung_unpacked_2015_galaxy_s6_edge_plus_rear_gold_TA

I have seen tons of comparisons between modern smartphone cameras and professional cameras over the years. Each year they get closer and closer, but not quite there yet. However, that doesn’t mean an excellent smartphone camera can’t be used to film a professional quality short film and look great.

Part 1 of the film has been released by Jens Rijsdijk, Sjoerd de Bont and Kuba Szutkowski, three up-and-coming directors who used an S6 Edge as their only camera. The short film also has an interesting idea behind it as this first part was shot by Sjoerd de Bont, and the next two parts will be shot by the other two directors. However, each director must continue off from where the last one started. As you’ll see by the part 1, it could go anywhere.

Samsung is using the film as a promotion for the Galaxy S6 Edge. Either way, it still shows just how great their smartphone camera is, and how it can be used to create professional quality films in the right hands.

The Wirecutter’s best deals: The Nexus 6P, and more!

This post was done in partnership with The Wirecutter, a buyer’s guide to the best technology. Read their continuously updated list of deals at TheWirecutter.com.

You may have already seen Engadget posting reviews from our friends at The Wirecutter. Now, from time to time, we’ll also be publishing their recommended deals on some of their top picks. Read on, and strike while the iron is hot — some of these sales could expire mighty soon.

Fitbit Charge HR Activity Tracker

Street Price: $145; MSRP: $150; Deal Price: $110 + $10 gift card

This deal is about $5 more than the lowest non-Black Friday price we’ve seen on this product before factoring in the gift card. The promotion is available on all colors and sizes of the fitness tracker.

The Fitbit Charge HR is our pick for the best fitness tracker. Jim McDannald said, “According to our tests, it’s more accurate at counting steps than most other wrist-worn trackers, not to mention it works seamlessly with Fitbit’s popular social ecosystem. And unique among most dedicated wrist trackers less than $200, the Charge HR uses a strap modeled after a traditional watch strap, which means it won’t ever fall off accidentally.”

Logitech Bluetooth Easy-Switch K811 Keyboard

Street Price: $90; MSRP: $100; Deal Price: $63

This deal is part of Amazon’s Gold Box Deal of the Day, which means it will only be around through the end of the day. We actually had this up on the page yesterday when it dropped to $80 because that was one of its lowest prices in months, but $63 is its lowest price ever.

The Logitech Bluetooth Easy-Switch K811 Keyboard is our upgrade pick for the best Bluetooth keyboard. Kimber Streams wrote, “If you spend all day typing (like I do), you should upgrade to one of Logitech’s Bluetooth Easy-Switch Keyboards: the K811 for Mac or the K810 for Windows. Both are more comfortable than the K380 [our main pick], with smooth, well-spaced square keys; an adjustable backlight; and correct layouts for Mac and Windows users, respectively. Our upgrade picks also have rechargeable batteries and, like the K380, let you switch between three different paired devices with the press of a button.”

Google Nexus 6P 32GB Smartphone

Street Price: $500; MSRP: $500; Deal Price: $450

This is a rare discount on one of our newest smartphone picks. You’ll save $50 off the street price on a product that barely budges from the $500 mark. This is the first deal we’ve posted on this smartphone our guide on the topic was updated just this week.

The Nexus 6P is the phablet pick in our guide on the best Android phones. Ryan Whitwam said, “If you like big phones and don’t mind paying $500 up front, you should get the Google Nexus 6P. It’s our favorite Android phone of any we’ve used this year. The 6P runs pure Android 6.0 Marshmallow, sports a top-of-the-line 1440p Super AMOLED screen, and has an attractive unibody aluminum frame. On the back is one of the best cameras available on a smartphone, along with a Nexus Imprint fingerprint scanner that’s even faster and more accurate than the one on the Galaxy S6.”

Samsung UN40J5500 40-Inch 1080p Smart LED TV

Street Price: $450; MSRP: $750; Deal Price: $384

This deal isn’t quite as good as the one we saw on Black Friday, falling $16 short of the lowest price. It’s still a good deal because it’s the only other time we’ve seen it drop below $400.

The Samsung UN40J5500 is the better color/streaming pick in our guide on the best $500 TV. When comparing to our main pick, Chris Heinonen said, “It is only 40 inches instead of 43 and has a 1080p image instead of Ultra HD. It offers a more accurate image than the Vizio in terms of color and color temperature, but without the ultra dark blacks the Vizio can produce.”

Deals change all the time, and some of these may have expired. To see an updated list of current deals, please go to The Wirecutter.com.

Samsung Galaxy A9 visits the FCC

Samsung_Galaxy_A9_leak_121715

When a device passes through the FCC, it’s usually only a matter of weeks if not days before the official release. This may be the case for Samsung’s Galaxy A9.

The Galaxy A9 just passed through the FCC and confirmed most of the rumored specifications. The Galaxy A9 should pack a 6-inch full-HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 620 chipset, 3GB of RAM, a 13MP rear-facing camera, a high quality front-facing camera, and a metal design similar to Samsung’s recent flagship models. Unlike previous mid-range Galaxy handsets, the A9 will include a fingerprint scanner, which up until this point has only been present on Samsung’s flagship models. The new Galaxy A5 and A7 will also have Samsung’s super fast fingerprint scanner embedded into their respective home buttons.

Android 5.1.1 is onboard and most notably is a 4,000mAh battery. That’s one of the biggest battery capacities we’ve ever seen on a Samsung device. The Galaxy A9 should make an appearance shortly, but we’ll likely find out more about the phone at the CES trade show next month.
