Samsung Galaxy S5 spotted running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

Marshmallow

A Samsung Galaxy S5 owner received the update to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow yesterday, indicating that the official update could soon be ready to rollout.

The Korean tech giant only recently began offering Android 6.0 Marshmallow beta testing for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge in the UK; however, beta testing for the new software isn’t available on any other Samsung device. That said, this update is a little strange, especially since there are no other reports of users getting it.

The owner of the Galaxy S5 did post a video to YouTube to showcase the new firmware:

There is some indication that this update could be fake. The Security Patch version is listed as “1 January 2016,” which shows that this firmware version either isn’t final or isn’t an official firmware version. Google hasn’t even released the January Monthly Security Update for its Nexus devices yet.

That said, it’s best to take all this with a grain of salt for now. However, the Galaxy Note 4 (in Hungary) has begun receiving Marshmallow before its successor. Could Galaxy S5 owners be in for the same treat in the near future?

Samsung’s Exynos 8870 shows up, likely set for other manufacturer usage

Samsung_Exynos_Quad-CoreSamsung’s Exynos 8890 is bound for their high-end, flagship devices to compete against the other heavy hitters in the market, but some of Samsung’s business still comes from selling their silicone to third-parties instead of keeping everything in house. That’s where the Exynos 8870 comes in.

The 8870 has finally shown up online, and it looks like it’s being made explicitly for other companies to use. That doesn’t mean it’ll be a downgraded processor, however, as early reports pin it close to the Snapdragon 820 in speed, which is nothing to sneeze at. The Meizu Pro 6 is rumored to utilize the processor once it’s finally available.

Unfortunately, there’s not much else to dig into about this upcoming processor. No details on architecture or exact specs, but hopefully Samsung gets things cleared up over the next few months.

There won’t be a 5.2-inch Samsung Galaxy S7 edge next year says report

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Despite still struggling to turn a profit, Samsung actually had a pretty good year – its four flagship devices this year were all fantastic, and although they didn’t sell as much as was originally suggested, it’s at least restored the Android community’s faith in the Korean manufacturer. With such success this year, we would have expected Samsung to do the same again this year with two flagships launched at MWC 2016, and another two at IFA 2016 (give or take a month), however a new report has suggested that there will be one less device, specifically that there will be no 5.2-inch Samsung Galaxy S7 edge.

Instead, Samsung will release the standard Galaxy S7 at MWC 2016 in February, and alongside it will be a phablet-sized Galaxy S7 edge. It’s unclear why Samsung would do this, or indeed whether this rumour holds any water, but presumably it has a lot to do with profit margins and the fact a phablet Galaxy S7 edge would attract a higher price. This adds credence to a previous rumour that suggested Samsung would only be releasing one dual curved display device in 2016 – now we just have the agonizing almost-two month wait to find out whether this is all true.

What do you think about there not being a 5.2-inch Samsung Galaxy S7 edge? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Here’s Samsung’s first Galaxy A 2016 commercial

GalaxyA2016_A7

Samsung launched its first commercial today for its newly refreshed line of Galaxy A smartphones. The ad is certainly entertaining, showing those silly moments in life we all go through, and says that the Galaxy A smartphones are “exclusively made for you.”

The Korean tech giant debuted the Galaxy A9 in China last week. The company also officially announced the Galaxy A3, A5, and A7, all set for the Chinese region; however, they’ll come to other markets in early 2016.

Samsung’s Galaxy A lineup certainly isn’t a bad batch of smartphones. On the contrary, some of them are actually very nice for being mid-rangers. And for those that aren’t wanting to shell out a ton of money for Samsung’s next flagship, the Galaxy A series might just be worth looking at.

Anyone plan on trying to snag a Galaxy A smartphone soon?

Samsung Galaxy S 5 unofficially gets Marshmallow through Cyanogenmod

gold_galaxy_s5If you’re tired of waiting for Samsung to finally get Android 6.0 pushed out to your Galaxy S 5, you’ll now be able to take things into your own hands and get Cyanogenmod 13 installed on your device, if you’re comfortable rooting and flashing a ROM.

Here’s the catch: only GSM devices are receiving these nightly builds. If you’re on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, or US Cellular, you’re out of luck, so keep that in mind when downloading and trying to flash these.

If you’ve got a compatible device and want to dive in, though, you can grab the ROM below.

Samsung Galaxy S5 gets Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, by accident

Spigen Screen Protector 9H Strong Surface Samsung Galaxy S5-1

Samsung recently announced an Android 6.0 Marshmallow beta program for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge in South Korea and the United Kingdom. So it came as a big surprise when one lucky Galaxy S5 owner received an OTA notification for the Android 6.0.1 update.

Mix Tech was quick to do a preview of the Samsung Galaxy S5 running Android 6.0.1, and they posted both screenshots and uploaded a video on YouTube. At first, Galaxy S5 owners were a little upset upon finding that the latest version of Android wasn’t accompanied by the latest version of TouchWiz. However, since the news broke, it has been reported that the Android security patch version of the firmware is listed as “1 January 2016”.

What we are saying is that this isn’t the final firmware for the Galaxy S5, it might not even be an official firmware. Galaxy S5 owners, chances are that the final firmware does come with the latest TouchWiz. Having said that, we don’t expect an update to be pushed out any time soon. Samsung is probably going to release Android Marshmallow for the Galaxy Note 5 before moving to previous generation handsets.

Rest assured, Samsung is indeed working on bringing Marshmallow to its 2014 flagship. Meanwhile, if you own a Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge, here’s our detailed guide on how to install the Marshmallow preview.

Samsung to offer Galaxy S7 in two sizes, report says

Samsung_Logo_01_TA_CES_2014

The Samsung Galaxy S7 could come in two different sizes, according to a report from Reuters. Not only that, but Samsung is reportedly starting an initial production run of 5 million units, indicating that the company has high hopes for its new flagship.

Samsung will offer a 5.2-inch flat Galaxy S7 as well as a 5.7-inch version with a curved display called the Galaxy S7 Edge. The Korean tech giant did something similar earlier this year, offering a flat-screened Galaxy S6 and a curved-screen Galaxy S6 Edge.

The company is expected to initially produce 3.3 million units of the Galaxy S7 and 1.6 million units of the Galaxy S7 Edge.

This also isn’t the first rumor to hint that Samsung will offer two variants of the Galaxy S7, as renders of the Galaxy S7 and alleged Galaxy S7 Plus have shown up in the past.

The report from Reuters says that Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy S7 in February, which the Korean tech giant has done in the past. The Samsung Galaxy S6 was announced during Mobile World Congress and the year before that, the Galaxy S5 was announced in late February as well.

Samsung’s smaller Galaxy S7 Edge might get scrapped in favor of the larger variant

samsung_galaxy_s6_edge_plus_top_left_corner_TAIt’s a pretty safe bet that we’ll see Samsung announce two versions of the Galaxy S7, just like they did with the Galaxy S6 in 2015, but we’re still trying to figure out exactly what two phones those will be. Rumors pointed at two sizes of the device, but with how successful the Galaxy S6 Edge was, it’s hard to imagine Samsung would abandon their curved flagship so quickly.

It turns out Samsung will probably be keeping both models by making some sacrifices. A new report suggests that Samsung will be scrapping the 5.2-inch version of the Edge device and will only offer the smaller GS7 in a normal model, while keeping the curved model of the “plus” size GS7. They’ll also likely rename the Edge Plus to just the Galaxy S7 Edge.

From Samsung’s perspective, this makes a lot of sense. It would’ve been hard to simultaneously launch four different devices from a logistical standpoint, and this keeps their flagship lineup from getting quite so muddied like it was last year.

Now we just have to wait until February to see if the early launch rumors end up being true.

Report: Galaxy S7 to feature 5.2-inch display, Galaxy S7 Edge 5.5-inch

Samsung's latest flagships all sport the formidable Mali-T760 GPU

The Galaxy S7 and the S7 Edge will launch in different sizes, according to a report from Korea’s ETNews cited by Reuters.

The reports claims Samsung will increase the display size of the Galaxy S7 to 5.2-inch, up from 5.1-inch on the S6. There won’t be a similar-sized curved version, however; the Galaxy S7 Edge will measure 5.5 inches, which is slightly smaller than the S6 Edge Plus model that arrived alongside the Note 5 this fall.

Citing anonymous industry sources, ETNews reports that Samsung is preparing an initial production run of 5 million units, split between the two models at a 2:1 ratio: 3.3 million Galaxy S7 units and 1.6 million Galaxy S7 Edge units.

For comparison, unofficial sources said the initial production run for the S6 comprised four Galaxy S6 units for every S6 Edge unit. After consumers reacted surprisingly well to the S6 Edge, Samsung scrambled to manufacture more units, eventually approaching a 1:1 ratio. It looks like Samsung is expecting a milder reaction to the Galaxy S7 Edge, possibly due to its larger size.

The report goes on to say that Samsung will finalize the development of the S7 and S7 Edge in January and kick off manufacturing in February. The announcement of the device is expected the same month, claim the sources. The WSJ recently reported that Samsung will likely unveil the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge around MWC 2016, which starts on February 22.

Today’s report clears up some of the confusion surrounding the size versions that the S7 will be released in. Some rumors have previously pointed towards a Plus version of the S7, but it looks now that said Plus model is actually the S7 Edge.

It’s all but certain that the S7 and S7 Edge will feature AMOLED displays of Quad HD resolution. The devices will be powered by Snapdragon 820/Exynos 8890 processors (depending on the market) and will come with improved cameras. The Galaxy S7 will also come with a microSD slot. New Samsung Galaxy S7 may come in 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch screen variants

If recent reports are anything to go by, Samsung’s next Galaxy flagship will come in two screen sizes, quite akin to Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6S. The current Galaxy flagship comes in two variants – the flat screened Galaxy S6 and the curved screened-Galaxy S6 Edge. According to South Korea’s ET News, the successor to the Galaxy S6 will come with a 5.2-inch screen, whereas the Galaxy S7 Edge will have a 5.5-inch display.

Earlier, we had informed you that Samsung could release its Galaxy S7 with two different processor types. Allegedly, some markets will see the Samsung Exynos 8890 processor with others getting the Snapdragon 820.

The report further states that the Korean electronic giant is already planning to start the production of around 3.3 million Galaxy S7 units and 1.6 million S7 Edge units. The mass-production will however commence in February.

While the current Galaxy flagship comes in two screen styles (flat and curved), both the devices share the same 5.1-inch display.  The Galaxy S6 Edge+, which is an upgraded version of the Galaxy S6 Edge, comes with a 5.7-inch screen size.

The Galaxy S7, which might be released in March, is likely to feature a pressure-sensitive screen – which is comparable to Apple’s 3D Touch feature.
