Details emerge for 12.2-inch ‘Samsung Galaxy Note Pro’

A premium class “Samsung Galaxy Note Pro” could make its debut in early 2014, according to details recently picked up by PhoneArena. Reportedly, the device features a 12.2-inch display at 2560×1600 pixel resolution, a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, and 3GB RAM. What’s more, the bigger body will allow for a 9500mAh battery, something with which we take no issue.

That Samsung is working on a larger tablet should not come as a surprise; rumors of such an animal have been circulating for quite a while.

Samsung is allegedly working on multiple tablets and smartphones for the first half of the year so expect more leaks and rumors.

What’s your thoughts on a premium class tablet experience? Does the sound of “Pro” scare you off?

[RUMOUR] The Samsung Galaxy Note Pro May Be The 12.2-Inch Tablet We’ve Been Expecting

samsung galaxy note proYou might remember that several months ago, king of technology leaks, evleaks, predicted that Samsung was developing a 12.2-inch tablet with model number SM-P900. Since then, almost no information regarding the 12.2-inch tablet from Samsung has emerged, however a picture published on Move Player may have confirmed that the device actually exists and is called the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro.

Seen pictured above beside its ‘smaller’ brother, the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014, the 12.2-inch Note Pro looks positively gargantuan. That monstrous screen is rumoured to carry a resolution of 2560×1600, same as the Note 10.1, and is said to possess 3GB RAM, Android 4.4, a 9500mAh battery and weight a pretty hefty 750 grams. Previous rumours also say that the Note Pro AKA the SM-P900 will possess Samsung’s new Exynos octocore processor which was announced about the same time these rumours surfaced back in July.

The rumours suggest that the Note Pro will be shown at CES 2014 in a few weeks so we’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for it when we’re there. Do you think these rumours are true and this Samsung Galaxy Note Pro is real? More importantly, would you buy this 12.2-inch monster? Let us know what you think.

Samsung Smartphone Gamepad To Be Paired With Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 In Game Edition Bundle

samsung smartphone gamepadIf you wanted to know how much Samsung is willing to milk its first-party Bluetooth gaming controller, the Samsung Smartphone Gamepad (see announcement here), we may have just had that question answered. According to German news site All About Samsung, Samsung has readied something called a “Game Edition” bundle which will contain the Gamepad as well as a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and what looks like a MHL adapter for playing games on larger screens.

The bundle is slightly ironic in that the Gamepad can’t strictly be used with the Tab 3 8.0 due to its size; the sliding clip on top of the Gamepad looks good only for smartphone/phablet use. This is of course slightly mitigated by the inclusion of the MHL adapter which will allow you to sit back and enjoy your games on your TV screen, though I’m still interested to know why Samsung chose the 8-inch Tab 3 to be part of this package and not the 7-inch or 10-inch variants.

We don’t know how much this “Game Edition” bundle is going to cost, but the Gamepad alone is expected to cost $110 which is a colossal amount for a Bluetooth game controller, so we hope the bundling of the Gamepad with the Tab 3 will soften the blow a little, particularly as we make our last minute Christmas purchases. Who’s interested in getting a Game Edition bundle like this one? Let us know in the comments.

Samsung’s GamePad to arrive in a Galaxy Tab 3 Game Edition bundle

It looks like Samsung will not only send the newly launched GamePad into the world solo, but also bundle it up. Although there’s no official word yet, a German blog has reported that the controller has been paired up with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 in a special Game Edition package. Using them could be awkward since the tablet’s too large to sit on the GamePad, but you can always hook it up to a TV using the accompanying HDMI adapter. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find info on whether the duo will come stateside, and we doubt it’ll arrive in time for Christmas. If so, hopefully there’ll be some savings over buying them separately, since the sticker on the GamePad alone is $110.

Samsung Smartphone Gamepad Officially Released, Looks A Little Different Than We Expected

samsung smartphone gamepadWe’ve heard about Samsung toying with the idea of a gamepad for some time now, but this iteration, deemed as the Samsung Smartphone Gamepad, looks quite different to the prototype version we saw at the launch of the Galaxy S4 almost 8 months ago. For those who can’t remember that far back, this is what that controller looked like:

samsung smartphone gamepadWhile the general form-factor of this officially announced controller is generally the same, you can tell that Samsung has done a lot of tweaking and research into what people who play games with mobile controllers actually want. What has resulted is something that is eerily reminiscent of the MOGA Pocket controller from PowerA, but as we know from our hands on with the device, that’s not a bad thing at all.

samsung smartphone gamepadThe Gamepad will be optimized for operation with Samsung’s Android 4.3 devices, the main ones being of course the Note 3, Galaxy S4, Note 2 and Galaxy S3. It will connect to your device via Bluetooth, and will also require the use of the Mobile Console App which will have a limited number of games compatible at launch, however this list will grow over time.

The Gamepad is available now in Europe, with a gradual roll-out to other regions planned. No word on pricing, but if Samsung is to have any hope of competing with other Bluetooth game controllers which are compatible with most other phones, the Gamepad would ideally not cross the $100 USD threshold.

What do you think about the Samsung Smartphone Gamepad? Is it something you would buy? Let us know.

Samsung Galaxy Gear notification update reaches the US three weeks late

Samsung Galaxy Gear with notifications

Remember how Samsung promised American Galaxy Gear owners an update that significantly improves third-party notification support? That update is at last rolling out — three weeks behind schedule. Early stateside adopters can now read the basic content of Facebook Messenger conversations, Gmail messages, Hangouts messages and Twitter mentions from their smartwatches. The upgrade should also improve battery life, connection quality and S Voice search performance. While we’d prefer to receive upgrades in a more timely fashion, it’s good to know that the Galaxy Gear is now much more useful to US wearers.

Tizen ready to unveil its newest devices in February at Mobile World Congress

Tizen is a relatively new operating system which will be featured on a wide range of devices, from smartphones and tablets to automotive computer systems, but it’s been pretty quiet thus far, only getting into the hands of developers and just a couple of cameras available for general consumers. That’s all about to change, as Tizen has sent us an invitation to check out the first set of devices running the OS on February 23rd in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress. It doesn’t specifically mention that smartphones will be included in this lineup, but it’s a pretty safe bet — especially since the first handset with Tizen was supposed to be coming out at the end of 2013. As always, we’ll be on the lookout for more details as they trickle in.

Tizen UI Screenshots Leak Out to the Web

tizen-24

Tizen is making some noise again this morning, with several UI screenshots being found in the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service database. The shots are from Tizen 2.1, and they are pretty different from what we have seen in the past. We get a good look at the dialer, messenger, calendar, and notification area, and it looks like Samsung is creating a nice UI for themselves.

Tizen is being considered Samsung’s “backup plan”, I guess just in case something happens between them and Android. That is most likely never going to happen, because Samsung leads in the most sales with their Android phones. Still, Samsung plans on releasing Tizen to the public next year, and is looking to be unveiled sometime in February.

I must say, it actually is looking a lot better from previous screenshots we have received, and it’s even looking better than TouchWiz in a way. That is just personal opinion, and I would like to know what you guys think about these screenshots. Is Tizen looking good in your eyes?
