Samsung browser receives ad block support

Ad blocking remains a contentious issue, but Samsung looks to be coming down on the side of anti-ads. Today, the smartphone giant is updating its Android browser to support content and ad blocking add-ons.
The Internet 4.0 browser, which is installed by default on Samsung’s phones and tablets, is seeing an update today on devices which are running Android Lollipop or newer. Samsung’s isn’t providing ad blocking capabilities as standard, but is now opening the door for users to install ad blocking add-ons from third parties if they wish. The aim appears to be to allow customers to speed up web page loading times and save on their data allowances, as advertisements can be rather bandwidth heavy, as well as better competing with features from popular browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.
One of the first compatible add-ons for Samsung’s browser is Adblock Fast, which is also available for Chrome, Opera and iOS devices. The plug-in is free to download from the Play Store and claims to decreases web page loading times on Android by an average of 51 percent. Crystal, one of the early ad blockers for iOS 9, is also now compatible with Samsung’s default browser and additional choices are no doubt on the way.
Ad blocking remains far less common on mobile that it is in the desktop space, but this is probably somewhat linked to the fact that some default Android browsers don’t provide ad blocking capabilities and many consumers stick with the pre-installed software. Samsung’s large install base could certainly see the number of ad block users increase now, although that will require users to go out of their way to install these extensions.
Headed to South Korea? You could get a free Galaxy Note 5 to use during your stay
Have you been wanting to snag a Galaxy Note 5, but can’t bring yourself to it? Well, you might be able to take one for a spin free of charge if you’re headed to South Korea.
Samsung has partnered up with the Korea Tourism Organization to provide 250 Galaxy Note 5’s for tourists to use per week. Not only that, but thanks to SK Telekom, each user will get 1GB of data to use during their stay in South Korea.
This offer is actually put on by the Korea Tourism Organization in order to show off South Korea’s insanely fast wireless infrastructure.
The only catch is that this promotion only applies to those flying into the Incheon International Airport in Seoul. Not only that, but users interested in taking part in this program will have to apply through the Korea Tourism Organization website. From there, they will let you know if your application was accepted, and you’ll be able to pick up your Galaxy Note 5 upon your arrival in Seoul.
It’s important to note that not everyone coming into South Korea will get to try a Galaxy Note 5. Only 250 people per week will get to take the smartphone out for a joyride. However, if you plan on taking a trip to South Korea this year, it might just be worth applying for your chance to have a little fun with Samsung’s latest and greatest. Keep in mind that if you do get selected, you will have to return your Galaxy Note 5 before leaving South Korea. They’ll, of course, have all the terms on their website.
If you’re interested, you can apply at the Korea Tourism website here.
All in all, it’s a nice promotion, and could potentially help boost Samsung’s falling sales worldwide.

Visit sunny South Korea and get a free Galaxy Note 5 to use while you’re there

As far as tourism-related publicity stunts go, this is a pretty cool one. Starting at the end of February, select visitors to South Korea will be given a free Galaxy Note 5 and 1 GB of data per day to use during their stay, courtesy of Samsung and local carrier SK Telekom.
What’s the catch, you might ask? There isn’t one. It’s all part of a publicity program to boost the international recognition of South Korea’s impressive wireless infrastructure and state-of-the-art mobile technology. In co-operation with the Korea Tourism Organization, Samsung will provide up to 250 visitors per week with a free Galaxy Note 5 to use for up to five days and SK Telekom will provide 1 GB of data per day.

You’ll have to fly into Incheon International Airport in Seoul to take advantage of the deal and you will need to apply before you fly via the Korea Tourism website. Note that not every visitor will receive this free device and data offer – you have to be selected through the application process – but it will give 12,000 tourists a year a taste of just how good mobile can be. If you’ve got a trip to South Korea planned after February, hit the KTO website to apply.
Imagine if 12,000 visitors to New York City were given a Nexus 6P with an unlimited data plan…
It’s official: Galaxy S7 is launching on February 21

Folks, it’s set in stone: the Galaxy S7 is launching on Sunday, February 21, 2016.
Samsung sent out invites to members of the press for its February 21 Unpacked 2016 event and there’s no doubt that we will get to see the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. The event will start at 7PM Barcelona time, on the same day LG plans to take the veils off its G5, ahead of MWC 2016. Two top Android flagships in one day, and Android Authority will be there to cover them both in detail.
Full details on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge specs, features and release – rumor roundup
While the invite itself is rather cryptic, Samsung put out a short teaser clip featuring its Gear VR headset. It’s possible that virtual reality will be incorporated somehow in the launch or that Samsung is preparing an announcement on this front.
No teasers yet about the Galaxy S7, but thanks to the rumor mill, we have a good idea of what to expect. Full details are available in our rumor roundup linked above, but at least in terms of design you should expect something very similar to the Galaxy S6, with an all-black version to spice it up.
As for the actual Galaxy S7 release date, March 11 is when the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will be available in stores in the US and Europe, and presumably more markets from around the world. That’s according to reports by @evleaks and assuming that everything goes to plan.
There were rumors that Samsung would release the Galaxy S7 early – indeed, last year the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge hit the stores almost a month later than the rumored March 11 release of the S7.
There’s been some confusion regarding a third version, Galaxy S7 Plus, possibly launching at MWC, but our current understanding is that only the 5.1-inch Galaxy S7 and 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 Edge are coming on February 21.
MWC is cementing its status as the most important mobile event in the world, with four major devices set to debut in Barcelona. Besides the Galaxy S7 and LG G5, Huawei is rumored to introduce the P9, while Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra will be on stage on February 24 to show the world the brand new Mi 5.
Three weeks left to Galaxy S7 launch date! Who’s excited?
Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2016 is booked for February 21st
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
If there was any doubt that Samsung would be launching their next Galaxy S device at a Samsung Unpacked event, Samsung has put that doubt to rest by announcing its intentions to host Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2016 on February 21st, 2016 in Barcelona. For those keeping track, that’s the day before MWC 2016 (Mobile World Congress) and is pretty much the traditional spot where the new Samsung Galaxy S smartphone is announced every year. Naturally, we’re expecting the Galaxy S7 to be announced, and while all we have to go on is rumours and hearsay, Samsung released a teaser trailer with today’s news that perhaps give us some very vague clues to what their emphasis will be this year:
Right from the beginning of the teaser, it’s clear that VR is going to take the centre stage. Whether this is the device’s own capabilities, or whether Samsung is planning to stream its announcement as a VR-enabled video remains to be seen, though we wouldn’t be surprised if both were true too. Given that Samsung has only just started to get its mobile business headed in the right direction again, you can bet that the Galaxy S7 is going to be a pretty impressive device – as if we expected anything else.

Meet Samsung’s Galaxy S7 on February 21st

Waiting to see if Samsung can rekindle its smartphone sales streak with Galaxy S number seven? You won’t be waiting long: media invites, as well as a tease-next-to-nothing teaser video have both surfaced, with the most salient points being that the new Galaxy S will be revealed during the annual mobile flood of Mobile World Congress (in Barcelona, amigo), and that you can expect to sit through an hour of feature rundowns and poetic pontificating on February 21st. (Or, wait on a supercut of the most important parts.)
The teaser video, embedded for the sake of it existing, includes a guy decked out in Samsung’s Gear VR headset. Maybe there will be some virtual reality features? Or maybe you’ll be able to gaze at the launch event in full 360-degree vision — if you’ve got Gear VR and a compatible (soon to be obsolete) smartphone.
Despite its predecessor(s) being Samsung’s best phones in years, the company is really looking for a hit. But. what else do we know about the Galaxy S7? Well, not much. In fact even the name isn’t confirmed, but rumors point to a touchscreen that can detect strong and faint touch input — like the iPhone’s recently brandished. The WSJ‘s report also points to fast-charging: something we can all be doing with.

Samsung sends out official invites to ‘Unpacked’ for expected Galaxy S7 release
Samsung has just sent out the official invites for it’s ‘Unpacked’ event for February 21st – one day before the Mobile World Congress conference. The launch event of the Next Big Thing will take place at 7 p.m. in Barcelona, and can also be watched on YouTube for those of us who cannot make it out to Spain.
Samsung is expected to release at least two new versions of the Galaxy S7, and possibly three. The regular, curved and large curved display S7’s are all possible flagships expecting to see their debut on the 21st of February in Spain.
Evan Blass from evleaks has been releasing information about the latest S7 flagships, and there are rumors that the next device may bring back the micro SD card slot, in addition to unmatched battery life of 17 hours on screen time. With the inability to hide secrets from the public, I am sure there are bound to be many more leaks in the weeks to come. Are you excited for the next S7?

Samsung will show the world the Galaxy S7 on February 21
We’ve finally received confirmation from Samsung that the Galaxy S7 will debut next month at MWC 2016, just as Evan Blass revealed yesterday.
Invites are out and a teaser is teasing. Samsung will show the world its newest hardware, led by its flagship phone, on February 21 at 1:00 PM ET.
Click here to view the embedded video.
Tonight, the company posted a teaser online to give the world an idea of what’s to come at its next Unpacked event. The video shows a man putting on a Gear VR headset and reaching out into the virtual reality-based world in front of him. The environment he’s immersed in is a dark room with a box containing the next flagship phone from Samsung. So the teaser hints that we’ll get both a new phone and an advanced virtual reality headset at MWC 2016.
The teaser pushed out alongside the press invites tonight is likely not the only one we’ll see in the weeks leading up to the launch date. Samsung will want to get everyone thinking and perhaps tease other new devices as well.

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge begin receiving Marshmallow in South Korea
Samsung has decided to skip Android 6.0 and go straight to Android 6.0.1. This update patches some of the initial bugs in Marshmallow and generally improves performance.
The Android 6.0.1 update has begun rolling out to Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users in South Korea. We have seen leaks in the past that showed some design changes in the beta version of the update, and if you liked them, you’re in luck. The leaks closely match screenshots taken by SamMobile that show some new UI changes. Some of the most noticeable one’s being the newly designed notification menu and power menu.
It shouldn’t be long before the update makes way out of South Korea to more nations around the globe. Mid-February seems like a good estimate right now. We’ll keep you posted.

Leaked teaser points to February 21 for #TheNextGalaxy from Samsung
It’s all but confirmed that we’ll see the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge appear at MWC 2016 in Barcelona next month. Almost guaranteeing that we’ll see the two phones on the much-anticipated February 21 date are two stills shared by Evan Blass, presumably taken from a teaser video that has yet to be released by Samsung.
The images show that #TheNextGalaxy is coming on February 21, 2016.

The two Samsung flagships, which are the same outside of size and display structure, are said to be redirecting the company back to its old ways in order to woo consumers. That means we’ll see a microSD card slot, water resistance, and a large battery featured with both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. An alleged Samsung employee spoke to Nader last week and also revealed exactly what should be expected. This person repeated much of what we’ve heard and said Samsung is following the recent trend of lowering megapixels and choosing a better module to handle various lighting conditions. And, on the software side, Samsung wants to combine an Apple Live Photos-like feature.
As mentioned before, February 21 will be a very busy day for the mobile industry if Samsung hosts something. Why? Because LG is preparing to debut what will likely be the G5.
It’s likely Samsung chooses this week to send out invites to a media event for MWC 2016 considering February 21 is just three weeks away.
