Hole-y tablets, Batman! Samsung design patent shows a tablet with a hole in It
Patent applications can often be the place where the most innovative and weird designs show their faces. The latest of these that has shown up at the USPTO is a Samsung design patent which appears to depict a Galaxy Tab-type device, but with a very curious hole in the bottom right corner. What this hole might be used for is absolutely beyond us, unless of course pant chains are making a comeback.
The rest of the tablet looks very standard: speakers, camera, and S-Pen, all typical of the Galaxy Tab experience. Of course, just because Samsung has taken out the patent, doesn’t mean that they will use it now or ever, but it’s interesting to wonder what they had in store when they decided to apply for the patent.
What do you think the hole would be used for? Let us know your thoughts on this Samsung design patent are in the comments.

Samsung opens its first ‘Experience’ stores across the UK
Samsung’s dabbled in creating dedicated spaces for UK shoppers a few times, but unlike arch-rival Apple, hasn’t built up any long-standing retail presence. That’s not the case in other regions, though, and earlier this year Samsung decided it was high time to set up a bunch of shops across Europe to call its own. Today sees the first of these “Samsung Experience” stores open their doors in the UK, though they’re actually operated by local partner Carphone Warehouse. The shops, which are located in London, Newcastle, Liverpool, Bradford, Bristol, Manchester, Bournemouth and Cardiff, play host to all things Samsung, from laptops to wearables, in the familiar try-before-you-buy type setting. We’re going to check out the Oxford Street store tomorrow, but if you’re close to one, head inside to get an early look at the new GS5 and Gear range before they launch on Friday.

Samsung Gear 2’s battery is pretty easy to replace
After having their way with Amazon’s Fire TV last week, the tool-wielding maniacs educators at iFixit are back, this time inspecting the insides of Samsung’s Gear 2 smartwatch. While iFixit neglected to give the original Gear the teardown treatment, its sequel garners immediate favor by moving the camera module from the strap to the watch’s main body, making band replacements trivial. A screwdriver and “a bit of light prying” were all that was needed to crack the thing open, and following the initial breach, most components were found to be easy to remove (and therefore replace), particularly the battery. The only sticking point, really, was a fused display assembly that would require replacing in its entirety if damaged or defective. Overall, though, the Gear 2 scored an impressive 8 out of 10 on iFixit’s repairability scale, though we doubt your local jewelry store horologist would agree.

Samsung is giving the Gear Fit smartwatch a vertical display mode
The curved AMOLED screen on Samsung’s Gear Fit smartwatch is alluring, but it currently has a catch: without a vertical display mode, you occasionally have to contort your arm to get a good view. That shouldn’t be an issue by the time the wristwear officially launches on April 11th, though. Business Insider, Pocket-lint and SamMobile have spotted an update that lets you rotate the Fit’s interface to a more watch-like (and sometimes more comfortable) portrait view. It’s just one change, but it could make a big difference if the lack of rotation was steering you toward the Gear 2 and other less exotic-looking wearables.

Samsung’s standalone smartwatch might be called the Gear Solo
Thought Will.i.am’s dubious wearable was the only SIM-toting smartwatch in production? Samsung’s apparently building one too. According to the Korea Herald, the company’s fourth Gear smartwatch will feature an embedded SIM — meaning it will be able to make and receive phone calls without syncing to a fully fledged smartphone. The Korean Intellectual Property Office told the paper that the device will be monikered the Samsung Gear Solo, appropriately alluding to its independence. The Herald says the device will be coming to SK Telecom initially, but could land in international markets later on. Samsung refused to comment on the report, stating that it didn’t want to contribute to “rumors or speculation.” Either way, it’s still probably more real than Will.i.am’s beat-dropping wrist-watch.

C Spire will carry the Samsung Galaxy S5 in May
C Spire customers had to wait months after the initial launch to get the Galaxy S 4, but they won’t have to be nearly so patient with the Galaxy S5. The southern US carrier has revealed that it will be carrying Samsung’s Android flagship in May, just weeks after the biggest networks get their turn. While there’s no mention of pricing so far, it won’t be surprising if the GS5 costs the same $200 on contract that we’ve seen at the largest providers. The relatively quick launch may not have an immediate effect outside of C Spire’s core markets, to be sure. Still, it suggests that Galaxy fans nationwide won’t have to leave their favorite regional carriers just to get Samsung’s latest and greatest in a timely fashion.
