Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (N910) may have a 5.7-inch Quad HD Display
After the relatively pedestrian reception of the Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung has said that it is looking for a way to refocus its efforts in the premium smartphone market, starting with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 that is expected to be released later this year. While Samsung has said they are considering a new form factor for the Note 4, it doesn’t look like they are going to stray too far size-wise from yesteryear’s 5.7-inch Note 3. In fact, according to a tip handed to GSM Arena, it looks like the Note 4, which carries the model number N910, will have a 5.7-inch Quad HD display.
This may be a relief for some expectant Note 4 owners who may have been scared the next generation Galaxy Note to balloon beyond the 6-inch threshold, however it looks like Samsung thinks the Note has found its niche at 5.7-inches. The Quad HD screen is by no means a surprise, and actually makes a lot of sense for a phablet with the extra screen real-estate, making for 515 ppi clarity, by no means a small amount. It’s probably notable to see that the Galaxy S5 Prime also features in this list, implying that it’s still on its way.
What do you think about the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 potentially staying at the same screen size as last year? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Samsung’s extra-rugged Galaxy S5 variant gets caught on video
Rumors of a truly rough-and-ready Galaxy S5 variant have so far had little support beyond vague filings and benchmarks. However, TK Tech News has just delivered the motherlode: it has posted hands-on videos (below) of what looks to be a Galaxy S5 Active for AT&T. The rugged device shown on camera shares a few superficial similarities with its bulked-up Galaxy S4 Active ancestor, including the all-mechanical navigation keys. However, this isn’t as much of a step down as last year’s toughened Galaxy — the GS5 Active appears to have the same 16-megapixel camera as the regular S5, and it sports an ever-so-slightly faster variant of its sibling’s Snapdragon 801 processor.
With that in mind, it’s not clear how close this is to the final design. Besides the drab pre-production look, there’s some questions over the display choice. TK swears that the device is using a greater-than-1080p screen, but a benchmark suggests otherwise; our money is on a normal 1080p panel, since there haven’t been any hints that the Active would outshine its regular counterpart on that front. There aren’t any telltale clues as to when this outdoor-friendly handset will ship, either, although the videos suggest that Samsung is making good progress.

Samsung Galaxy W to sport a 7″ screen?

We all know that Samsung like to throw everything the come up with out there for people to try, what sells they stick with and continue selling what doesn’t they simply discontinue. One good example of that is the Galaxy Note line, which was a huge revelation back when the first Galaxy Note device was launched, people grew to like in a short period of time. They’ve been trying to do the same thing ever since.
I believe you all remember Galaxy Mega, a midrange phablet device that Samsung introduced about a year ago. Well, this recent leak reminds us of that devices. If recent leak from SamMobile is to be believed, Samsung is going to release a Galaxy W phablet that looks like every other Galaxy device and is going to sport a 7″ screen. I’m going to give you a moment to read that last sentence one more time, and no, we didn’t make a mistake when we wrote 7″ screen. Apparently Samsung is trying to sell us a 7″ device and call it a phablet instead of a tablet, considering 7″ is small tablet category. This device should sport a 720p screen, a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of storage expandable via microSD card and an 8MP camera. It should run Android 4.3 and not the latest iteration of Android 4.4 KitKat. A part of that Android 4.3 offering should be “Phoneblet UX” which will let you run 2 apps at once on your homescreen, although that just sounds like “Multi-Window” feature Samsung has been baking into their devices for a while now.
Maybe this device is a successor to Galaxy Mega and Galaxy W is just a codename, who knows. All we know is that this is going to be (if it ever sees the light of day) way too big for a smartphone or a phablet. The device should launch in South Korea as an SK Telecom exclusive, no word of it coming to Europe, U.S. or any other part of the world for that matter.

Samsung Gear Blink to compete with Google Glass

More and more evidence is piling up that Samsung plans to compete with Google Glass in the wearables industry. We just learned recently that Samsung has a mighty lead over the current competition on the smartwatch industry, controlling over 70% of the market. Now we have evidence of a trademark for Galaxy Gear Blink in the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
The reported Galaxy Gear Blink has not been confirmed by Samsung and is likely to launch early next year.
Also in the database is the Samsung Rounded, which is likely to be the successor to the Galaxy Round, which never made it to the United States and was sold in limited quantities.
Notice the word “Galaxy” is not in either of these devices, further signaling a desire for Samsung to move on from its successful Android-powered brand. Samsung hopes to one day power of of its devices with Tizen, its own operating system. However as Android has become more and more mature lately with just about the same amount of apps as Apple, it’ll be a difficult thing to convince its customers to ditch Android in the future.
All of this, of course, is just speculation and a while away. Sundar Pichai from Google not too long ago stated that Google’s relationship with Samsung has “no tension whatsoever” and that the “Galaxy S6 would sport Android so there is nothing to worry about.” Rest assured, it seems Google and Samsung are still close buddies.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 display details leak

If Samsung is going to stick to its usual Galaxy Note release dates we still have over 3 months until the Note 4 sees the light of day. It’s definitely time for the rumors to start and in that light we have a rather big one to kick things off, although the kind of did with this possible design leak.
According to GSMArena’s tipster, Galaxy Note 4′s codename is “T (Muscat)”. Galaxy Note 4′s expected model name should be N910x, where the last digit (marked with an “x”) marks the subversion of the device (Exynos, Snapdragon, LTE, etc.). If this rumor is to be believed Note 4 should come with a 1,440×2,560 5.7″ QHD screen, which would make a 551 PPI. It is interesting that the screen remains the same size this time, not that we’re complaining though. Let us remind you that until now screens on the Note family were getting bigger by 0.2″ in each iteration. The screen on the Note 1 was 5.3″, Note 2′s screen was 5.5″ in size while the Note 3 came around at 5.7″. Note 4 is rumored to to be powered by an Exynos Hexa or a Snapdragon 801 chipset.
Do you think there’s truth to this rumor and do you plan on buying the Note 4 once it launches?

Is “Samsung Gear Blink” the name of Samsung’s Google Glass Competitor?
We’ve suspected for some time now that Samsung has been working on its own competitor device to the Google Glass wearable, currently known as Gear Glass in the Android community. While no real concrete evidence has ever really surfaced regarding the device apart from a few design patents, something has just surfaced out of Samsung’s native South Korea. According to reports, Samsung has trademarked the name “Samsung Gear Blink“, presumably referring the the action of blinking, which does sound a lot like a glasses-like wearable.
As was made clear with the launch of the Samsung Gear 2 smartwatches, the omission of the “Galaxy” in the name definitely suggests that whatever the Gear Blink is won’t be using Android as its operating system. Of course, there’s nothing to really suggest that Samsung will even use the name Gear Blink for its future products, but we like to imagine that the name will come up sooner rather than later, as will a Samsung-branded glasses wearable too.
What do you think about the name “Samsung Gear Blink”? Do you think the trademarked name has any significance? Let us know your 2 cents in the comments below.

Samsung plans to bring biometric security to its low-end phones
The Galaxy S5 was widely tipped to launch with iris-scanning capabilities. When the crunch time came, Samsung played safe with only fingerprint sensor support. According to the Wall Street Journal, the eye-centric tech is still on the company’s radar and could soon debut in new high- and low-end phones alike. “We’re looking at various types of biometric [mechanisms] and one of things that everybody is looking at is iris detection,” Samsung executive Rhee In-jong admitted today, adding that it would likely be included in flagship smartphones first. Like fingerprint recognition, iris scanning would likely form another link in Samsung’s Knox platform, putting it in good stead with big organizations like the US government. Samsung’s desire to “follow the market trend” often causes it to beat rivals to market with features that customers rarely use. Iris scanning could well be the next example.
