Samsung Gear Solo smartwatch to be announced alongside Note 4 at IFA 2014
It’s been rumoured for some time now, and today, yet another rumour has suggested that the Samsung Gear Solo smartwatch is going to be announced alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 at the Samsung UNPACKED event next month. This rumour comes from Yonhap News, who interestingly suggests that the device will be announced on September 4th, despite the fact invites for the event have already confirmed that the event will be held on September 3rd, though perhaps they are accounting for the time difference.
The Gear Solo is expected to be the next step up from its Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo brethren by incorporating SIM card capabilities, allowing it to be operate ‘solo’ and make calls as a standalone device. It’s not clear what OS the device will be running on as Samsung has basically thrown out their platform-denoting naming conventions for the Samsung Gear Live, and is especially interesting given that Google has been unhappy with Samsung putting so much effort into its Tizen smartwatches. Whatever the case is, we’re excited to see what is announced on September 3rd at IFA 2014.

Samsung teases a Galaxy Note 4 reveal for September 3rd
It’s that time of year again: smartphone-reveal-event season, and Samsung is holding one next month, in three cities, simultaneously. A recent invite sent to the press, embedded after the break, asked us to “note the date” of September 3rd on our calendars for a product unveiling in New York. It’s the latest in the Korean outfit’s series of Unpacked events, and it’s happening just a few days before Apple’s supposed product reveal. Given the cheeky wording of the email, we’d suspect it’s pertaining to the Galaxy Note 4 (it’s almost assuredly about the Note 4). Whatever it may or may not end up being, though, you can rest assured that we’ll be there covering it live just for you.

Apple and Samsung agree to drop all their patent lawsuits outside of the US
So much for fighting to the bitter end — Apple and Samsung have just announced an agreement that will see them end all patent lawsuits against each other outside of the US. For those not keeping score, that means they’re dropping cases in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea and (phew!) the UK. The two tech companies aren’t automatically buddy-buddy after this, however. Besides continuing their existing American cases, they aren’t pursuing any licensing deals or other pacts that would avoid trouble in the future. Still, if you’ve been hoping that Apple and Samsung would finally make nice and focus on beating each other in the marketplace instead of the courtroom, you’re much closer to getting your wish.

Samsung is helping golfers keep up with the PGA Championship
While a lot of people in the US are getting ready for the NFL regular season to start, there are indeed other sports out there. Which is to say, the other football, basketball, baseball and, well, you get the point. For golf fans, these next few days will be rather interesting, with the PGA Championship due to begin on Thursday, August 5th. Naturally, Samsung saw an opportunity and found a way to help golfers who won’t be there to experience it live, by introducing a smart TV app filled with content from the tournament — the only caveat is you’ll have to own one of the company’s 2013 or 2014 sets. Aside from that, there will be a ton of stuff for you to enjoy, including different broadcast modes (from CBS and TNT); a second-screen feature that can display leaderboards and highlights on an Android device; and live voting for different things during the PGA event. Once the Championship is over, Turner Sports, a Samsung partner on the launch, tells us the smart TV app is expected to have the same features for the Ryder Cup, which tees off on September 23rd.

Motorola acquires fourth largest smartphone market share in India
Within a year of re-entering the Indian smartphones scene, Motorola has beaten Nokia in smartphone market share, according to analysts firm Canalys. In the second quarter of 2014, Motorola has emerged as the fourth largest seller of mobile phones pushing Finnish firm Nokia – now known as Microsoft Mobile – to the fifth slot.
Lenovo-owned Motorola shipped 955,650 smartphones to India in Q2, while Nokia managed to ship only 633,720 units. In Q1, however, Nokia was on the fourth place with 583,160 units while Motorola had only shipped 379,310 smartphones.
It looks like Motorola’s competitively priced Moto G and Moto E phones have helped the company revive its fortune in one of the world’s largest smartphone market. Motorola has further slashed the price of its hot-selling Moto G by two grand to pit it against similarly priced Chinese and Taiwanese smartphones.
According to the Canalys report, Samsung sold 4.4 million smartphone in India in Q2 while Micromax and Karbonn sold around 3.1 million and 1.07 million units respectively.
