Samsung Galaxy Note 4 hitting South Korea this month

samsung_note2_720

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is the current ‘Note’ flagship smartphone, and definitely Samsung’s most successful phablet yet. Right now, Samsung Note 4′s biggest competition is the new iPhone 6 Plus, but Samsung is not missing a chance to make fun of Apple, as they believe that Apple is now following their footsteps. Also to give Apple a run for their money, Samsung is planning to release the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in South Korea before the release of iPhone 6 Plus. SK Telecom, LG U+ and KT will be carrying it later this month.

AT&T brings Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S to its tablet lineup

Tab S

Starting today, AT&T will be taking pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S in both the 10.5 and 8.4 inch sizes.  Shipping is expected to take place on Sept. 23, or if you want to wait to buy them in store you just have to wait 3 days longer.

Both tablets qualify for AT&T’s Next plan, for 0 down and $31.50 a month for the 10.5 inch flavor and $26.50(both for 20 months) for the 8.4 inch version.  If you want to buy them outright, the 10.5 version will be $629 and the 8.4 inch version will be $529 with no annual contract.

If you’re confused as to which tablet this is specifically, because of Samsung’s wide assortment of tablets, the Tab S is the tablet with the high resolution Super AMOLED display.  Most other tablets use LCD technology which doesn’t allow for high contrast and vivid colors like the Tab S.  The Tab S is also super slim and has a soft-touch plastic back similar to that on the Galaxy S5.  Samsung powers the Tab S with an Exynos 5 processor with 3GB of RAM to allow seamless multitasking which Samsung does superbly well.  In addition to the high end hardware, the Tab S also comes with a fingerprint scanner for additional security.

AT&T is also offering 50% off the Tab S keyboard with the purchase of either of the Tab S tablets.

Yes, Unreal Engine 4 is coming to Samsung Gear VR too

The latest game development toolkit from Epic Games supports Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus, but what about virtual or augmented reality on mobile devices? That’s coming, too — and apparently pretty soon. Road to VR has noticed that on Epic’s publicly-accessible “Unreal Engine 4 Roadmap” task-board two new bits were added to the VR to-do list: Samsung Gear VR and Google Project Tango support. They’re labeled as September and October projects, and as Road to VR notes, the VR project category has been empty since Oculus’ and Sony’s features have been completed. If anything, this yet another example of just how versatile Unreal Engine 4 is when it comes to what the engine’s games can run on. Maybe Amazon’s Fire phone is up next? After all, there’s precedent (sort of).

Samsung’s new online sitcom tries to make its employees look hip

The star of Samsung's

Samsung doesn’t just want to make its products look cool — it wants its jobs to look cool, too. It’s accordingly launching Best Future, an online-only musical sitcom that portrays Samsung as a hip place to work for young South Koreans. The star is Mirae (“future” in Korean), a fictional worker at the tech giant’s Suwon headquarters; the six-episode series will follow her and her roommate Chaego (“best”) as they dance their way through the workday. There aren’t too many clues as to the storyline, but Samsung is teasing the prospect of “song battles” when the series arrives in October. Suffice it to say this won’t be a deep, introspective masterpiece.

With that said, don’t knock this supremely cheesy production just yet — apparently, sitcoms as corporate marketing tools are more effective than you think. Samsung says that a previous internet show built around its philosophy, Endless Energy, racked up over 5.5 million views last year. It’s doubtful that the approach would help beyond South Korea, where Samsung is virtually inescapable in public life, but the company has clearly managed to resonate with at least some of its home audience. Let’s just hope that Best Future avoids any awkward Broadway bits.

Samsung’s next big budget phone is made for selfies

The rumored Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime

Companies like Microsoft and Sony know that you don’t necessarily want to buy a high-end smartphone just to take selfies, and it now appears that Samsung knows this, too. In the wake of store listings and government filings, Thegioididong has managed to get its hands on the unannounced Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime (aka G530), a 5-inch budget Android phone that’s seemingly tailor-made for self-portraits. Its centerpiece is undoubtedly its 5-megapixel front-facing camera; while that’s certainly not the highest resolution we’ve seen, it’s unusually powerful for a device that’s likely to be cheap off-contract.

The rest of the phone won’t be much to write home about, although it shouldn’t be a slouch as far as low-cost phones go. While the 960 x 540 screen is disappointing, there will also be a respectable 1.2GHz quad-core processor (likely a Snapdragon 400 or 410), speedy LTE data, 8GB of expandable storage and an 8-megapixel rear camera. The Grand Prime is expected to reach Vietnam (and other countries, such as China) as soon as October. You probably won’t see an official launch in the US given that previous Grand phones haven’t made it stateside, but that shouldn’t be a problem for American selfie addicts — phones like the HTC One Remix (One Mini 2) are easily up to the job.

Samsung’s new flagship NX1 shoots 28.2-megapixel stills and 4K video

Samsung's new flagship camera shoots 28.2-megapixel stills and 4K video

This week marks the start of Photokina, the camera show where pretty much every brand will unveil their latest and greatest pieces of kit. We’ll hear from everybody in due time but right now, Samsung is in the hot seat. The tech giant just unveiled the NX1, the company’s first camera that records 4K video. In addition to doing UHD footage at 30 or 24 frames per second and Cinema 4K at 24fps, it shoots stills with a 28.2-megapixel backside-illuminated APS-C CMOS sensor. In burst-capture mode, you can snap up to 15 frames per second at full resolution. ISO sensitivity now ranges from 100 to 51,200. Similar to the NX30, a more mid-range camera in Samsung’s lineup, this has WiFi and NFC, along with a 3-inch Super AMOLED articulating display and a 1,366 x 768 electronic viewfinder. In this case, though, it’s 802.11ac WiFi, there’s Bluetooth too, and the EVF promises a shorter lag time of around 5ms.

Under the hood, the NX1 makes use of a new auto-focusing system with 205 Phase Detect points, which Samsung says cover 90 percent of the frame. It’s those focusing points pros will care about most, though Samsung also tweaked its algorithms to better predict where a subject is going to move. The AF assist light also has an improved reach — up to 15 meters. As for the body, it’s a magnesium-alloy affair — both dust- and water-resistant — with an LCD status display on top, next to the mode dial.

The NX1 arrives in mid-October, priced at $1,499 for the body only. In addition, Samsung will sell a new 50-150mm with f/2.8 aperture through the entire zoom range. In addition, it brings four-axis optical image stabilization and the ability to limit focus to a custom range. So far, Samsung has declined to say whether its other cameras will get a firmware update to support this new lens and its custom-focus feature, though the company does have a pretty good history of providing software updates to older models. That will arrive next month too, at a cost of $1,599. There will also be an optional battery grip, which packs a 1,900mAh cell (about the same size as on the main camera), and which should give you an extra 500 shots, give or take.
