Samsung to shelve Galaxy Alpha and move to lower-cost models, report says

Samsung will stop selling the Galaxy Alpha once current inventory is depleted, according to a recent ET News report. Allegedly, Samsung will discontinue the higher-priced, more premium experience, in favor of lower-cost alternatives such as the Galaxy A5. Whereas the Galaxy A5 features some of the same materials and design characteristics as the Alpha, its lower-tier specs bring about a cheaper sticker price. The A5 is expected to launch with a cost of around $365 US.
Samsung has yet to officially make any claims or confirm the reports.

Samsung to launch omnidirectional speakers at CES

We may know Samsung best for its extensive range of smartphones and tablets, but the company’s product portfolio reaches into almost every area of consumer electronics. The tech giant will be using some of its time at CES to launch two new “ring” speakers and an expanded line-up of curved soundbars.
The WAM7500 and WAM6500 are Samsung’s first omnidirectional set of speakers, which utilize a proprietary “Ring Radiator” technology to pump out audio in all directions. Samsung claims that its technology allows for a perfect balance between treble and bass. The 7500 is designed as a table-top speaker, while the 6500 comes with a handle for portability. The aesthetic design is clearly an equally big part of Samsung’s new line-up as the sound.

Samsung also intends to extend its soundbar line-up at CES, with the new 8500, 6500 and 6000 series. Samsung will then have a total of four different line-ups that match its Curved TVs of various sizes, ranging anywhere from 45 to 78 inches. The 8500 also offers three additional speakers for a broad 9.1 channel surround sound experience.
Of course, what interests us is that we can connect our smartphones and tablets, as well as smart TVs and other soundbars, directly to Samsung’s new speakers without hassle. The WAM6500 also comes with built-in batteries, making it an interesting option if you’re looking for a portable speaker to complement your mobile devices.
There hasn’t been any mention of price or availability just yet. Samsung will be revealing additional details about all of the above, and more, during next month’s CES.
Samsung to officially announce the Galaxy A7 on Jan 14
According to Korean media reports, the Samsung Galaxy A7 will launch on the 14th of January. It is said that the handset will launch in South Korea first followed by the rest of the world markets subsequently.
The Galaxy A7 and the Galaxy A5 will launch simultaneously in the region, with the latter already available in some markets. With dimensions of 150.9 x 75.9 x 6.3 mm, the Galaxy A7 is all set to be Samsung’s slimmest smartphone till date. It will feature a design similar to the Galaxy A3 and the Galaxy A5, but in a slightly larger exterior.
The handset is expected to be packing a 5.5 inch 1080p display, a 1.5 GHz octa core processor, 16GB of internal storage (expandable), 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera on the back, a 5-megapixel front camera, Android 4.4 KitKat and a 2,500 mAh battery. Expect Samsung to announce the device Stateside sometime soon as well.

New leaked Samsung Galaxy S6 photos of fully assembled device are difficult to defend
Leaked photos should always be taken with a grain of salt, no matter who the source is – that is the nature of leaked material. So it is with that in mind that these new leaked Samsung Galaxy S6 photos are brought to our attention, one apparently displaying a fully assembled Galaxy S6 in three colour […]

The LG G4 could have a stylus of its own to compete with the Note 4’s S Pen
Earlier this month, a trademark submitted by LG was spotted aiming to reserve the rights to the name, “G Pen“. Obviously referring to a stylus, this gave birth to discussions regarding whether LG was starting development of a device with a stylus that would eventually see it go to battle with Samsung‘s phablets. As it turns out, rumours are […]

Samsung reducing smartphone lineup by up to 30% next year
Times are getting a little tough over at Samsung. Profit is declining and executives are seeing their pay slashed. The company relies heavily on its mobile division and that is where changes are going to be made. Next year, Samsung confirmed it will be reducing its smartphone lineup by 25% to 35%. Samsung would like to streamline everything in an effort to be cost efficient.
Demand for Galaxy devices is in limbo and Samsung would like to focus on select models. Right now, there are far too many Galaxy devices available in various names, sizes, colors, and markets. It is undeniably messy and confusing for consumers. Focusing on select models will provide proper attention and promotion across the board. It clears confusion for consumers because there will be actual differentiation.
Samsung remains as dominant as ever in markets like the United States. But in markets overseas, competitors are pushing back. Low-cost devices, from hardware manufacturers such as Xiaomi, are giving Samsung a run for its money. Reducing its smartphone lineup will give Samsung’s low-cost devices the push they desperately need to be competitive.

No surprise: Samsung will cut number of models released by 25 to 30 percent
In case you hadn’t heard, Samsung isn’t doing too great. Sure, it’s still top of the Android ladder, but its poor financial performance this year has it harshly assessing its strategy going forward. Now one of the things that Samsung is often associated with is inundating the market with an assortment of devices at different price points, effectively saturating all parts of the market and vastly increasing its chances of profit. While this didn’t work in 2014, Samsung will cut number of models that it produces, aiming to create more components that can be shared across models, so that the economies of scale work more in their favour.
In this way, Samsung will need to cut down their number of released models by 25 to 30 percent, which is a pretty big number when you think about how many mid and low range devices they release on a yearly basis – the Galaxy Core, Galaxy Ace, and Galaxy Mega just to name a few. And with the news that Samsung intends to make the Samsung Galaxy S6 from scratch, perhaps we shall see Samsung create an innovative flagship device like the one that saw it rise to prominence in the first place.
