Samsung Galaxy Note 3 on AT&T getting Android Lollipop now
Earlier today AT&T starting rolling out the Android Lollipop update to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Turns out that is not the only Note device on AT&T getting Lollipop today as the carrier started rolling out the update for the Galaxy Note 3 as well.
AT&T’s support site does not indicate whether the update includes some of the additional apps the Galaxy Note 4 is receiving, like Evernote or Amazon Shopping. There is also no indication as to whether Samsung modified the update from Samsung to ensure the mute mode works properly.
Users can wait for the OTA update notification to show up on their device to start the update process. They can also check to see if the update is available for them by going to Settings –> General –> About device –> Software updates –> Check for updates.

Samsung starts rolling out stability update for the Galaxy S4
Samsung is currently pushing out a relatively minor over-the-air stability update to all unlocked variants of the Galaxy S4 currently located Europe. Sadly, this upgrade doesn’t bring much in terms of added functionality, but it does include the latest builds of KNOX and Silent Mode, as well as a handful of ‘system stability improvements,’ all aimed at making a user’s experience better when using the handset.
Hit the break for the complete changelog.
- Samsung KNOX V2.0
- Silent Mode
- Bug fixes
- Security Optimizations
If you own a Galaxy S4 (I9500) and have not yet received the OTA update, you can head into “Settings,” then “About Device,” and select “Check for Updates” to manually scan for the upgrade. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive a push notification on your handset prompting you to download and install the update.

Samsung’s new TouchWiz UI for Galaxy S6 may have a touch of Tizen present
Over the years, one complaint that surfaced about Samsung smartphones was the TouchWiz UI that Samsung deployed. While Samsung was always adding in lots of interesting and unique features, critics also felt the interface was becoming too bloated and busy. Samsung took that input and started to trim things back some for the Galaxy Note 4. However, for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, it was clear that Samsung was being more aggressive in trimming things down. Many believed a lot of this was due to the influence of Google’s Material Design framework. However, it appears that Samsung also leaned heavily on their work with the Tizen OS, recently employed on the Samsung Galaxy Z1 released in India.
Comparing Tizen OS with the new TouchWiz, some similarities jump out. For instance, the Contacts app is quite different from previous TouchWiz iterations, but it looks very much like the Tizen Contacts app. Colors are more prominent, icons and avatars are round instead of square, and the menus are trimmed down quite a bit. Coincidentally, these changes are similar to what Google calls for with Material Design.
One area that definitely seems to be a crossover from Tizen is the ability to personalize themes, most notably applying a universal color scheme to the interface and even within apps.
Samsung’s UX design team had previously said that their goal with Tizen on the Galaxy Z1 was to create an interface that focused on simplicity, ease and speed. These same buzzwords are popping up from Samsung with regard to TouchWiz now as well.
To get an idea of how similar Samsung’s take on Tizen is, check out the video below that was recently released by Samsung’s developers.

Foldable displays from Samsung coming in 2016, LG in 2017
It has been reported in the past that Samsung has been working on a foldable display, and it looks like it’s on track for next year. In fact, some believe we might see them in tablet form by the end of this year.
Samsung isn’t the only company working on such displays as LG is too, but they are targeting 2017.
LG is also spending a considerable amount of resources on transparent displays. These types of display are already in use, but not at the consumer level. Unfortunately no target was set as to when we will see them come to market.

Despite what criticisms you might have, Samsung has actually done a pretty good job with their latest flagship devices, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Specs vs Experience | The Friday Debate Podcast 009
The flagship reviews and some technical difficulties kept the Friday Debate Podcast from releasing on time – but to be fair, we recorded this on Friday so it still makes sense! Jokes aside, we have Lanh filling in for Andrew this week as we talk about the age-old battle between specifications and user experience. With phones like the Moto E coming along with all of these high profile releases from Samsung and HTC, we talk about whether the general usage experience really needs high end specifications. We also ponder how raw specs drive perception of a phone. And finally, we touch upon the Uh Oh program that was just recently announced by HTC in which users can get a brand new phone when their current One M9 fails or gets damaged.
It’s a pretty packed episode, so make sure you tune into this episode #9 of the FDP!
