Samsung starts rolling out Lollipop OTA for the Note 4 in Spain

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_Back_Galaxy_Note_4_Logo_TA

Samsung has now started pushing out the much-anticipated, eagerly-awaited Lollipop update to all unlocked models of the Note 4 located in Spain. This upgrade transports the latest build of the Android operating system to the handset, together with a handful of bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations.

Hit the break for the full changelog.

  • Material Design: You will quickly notice a whole new colorful look and feel to your device – from fluid animations to new application and system themes, colors and widgets.
  • Notifications UI & Priorities: In order to alert you to the most timely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:
    • notifications will appear on the lock screen and are intelligently ranked by type and who sent them.
    • you double-tap to open one, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.
    • you can set the priority and privacy of notifications for each application.
    • very high priority notifications will pop up briefly over other applications so that you can take action.
    • when you dismiss a notification on one device it will be dismissed on your other Android devices, if they are connected to the Internet.
    • you can further tailor how notifications behave with the new Downtime and Ambient Display settings (see below).
  • New Interruptions & Downtime Settings: You can tailor how interruptions behave, choosing to allow all, none, or only priority interruptions.  You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify.  The Downtime setting will allow only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify.  e.g. allow only priority interruptions on the weekend.
  • Recent Apps (Multi-tasking): The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) will include both applications and separate activities within those applications.  For instance, each open tab in Chrome will also appear here along with recent applications; both your Gmail Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards.  This provides a consistent way to switch amongst tasks.
  • Flashlight: Lollipop includes a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it).
  • Pin a view/app: Screen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can ‘pin’ a game and your child will not be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.
  • Battery: The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging.  You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.
  • Smarter Internet Connections: With Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified Internet connection. This feature improves hand-offs between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, helping to maintain your video chat or voice-over-IP (VoIP) call as you switch.
  • Performance: Your phone now uses the new Android Runtime to help optimize application performance.  After upgrading to Lollipop, your applications will undergo a one-time optimization process.  Note that the optimization for ART requires more space.
  • Security: Encryption can now use a stronger 256-bit key to help protect your data.  Note that the stronger key willonly be used after you perform a factory reset on Android Lollipop.  Otherwise encryption will continue to use 128-bit key.  You can turn on encryption in the Security settings menu.

To start the update, make sure you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network. Then, from the home screen, press the Menu key, followed by Settings. Scroll to the bottom and tap ‘About Device’, followed by ‘Software Update and ‘Update Now’.

Verizon opens Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge pre-orders on April 1st, hopefully not a joke

samsung_galaxy_s6_front_back_slanted_blueVerizon has announced that they’ll be opening up pre-orders for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge on April 1st in all storage sizes and both black and white colors.

Pricing for the devices is about where you’d expect them to be. The cheapest, 32 GB Galaxy S6 will run $199 (after a $50 mail-in rebate, standard for all of these phones), and you can expect to shell out an extra $100 for the 64 GB or an extra $200 for the 128 GB. The S6 Edge runs $100 more, so the devices cap out at $499 for a 128 GB Galaxy S6 Edge. That’s pretty pricey for a device that you’re buying with a two-year contract, but I doubt anyone will be surprised by these price tags.

Full retail on these devices start at $599 and cap out at $899, which actually isn’t too bad for a brand new phone on Verizon’s network. You can always finance the device through Verizon Edge, too.

Will you be pre-ordering the S6 on the 1st?

Sprint bundles Galaxy S6 in $80 all-in monthly rate plan

Sprint is doing something a little bit different for its Galaxy S6 sales, hoping it might attract customers looking to purchase the upcoming flagship smartphone.

The wireless provider will bundle the handset with unlimited talk, text, and data in one monthly rate plan. The 32GB Galaxy S6 can be leased for 24 months at a rate of $80 per month; customers receive a $20 credit toward the device itself. The 64GB model will be $85 per month while the 128GB model will run $90 per month. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is $85 per month – $5 per month after the same $20 lease credit.

Customers interested in multiple lines can grab four Galaxy S6’s with unlimited talk, text, and 20GB shared data for $200 per month. Again, this option is considered a lease and not an equipment installation cost.

Report: Samsung to triple Galaxy S6 Edge production

samsung galaxy s6 edge aa 9

The Galaxy S6 is looking to be a much needed early winner for Samsung this year. The need for additional Galaxy S6 production capacity was already been rumored earlier in the month, and this time sources are stating that the Galaxy S6 Edge in particular is seeing higher demand than expected from retail and carrier partners. Samsung is now expected to triple the originally planned production volume of the S6 Edge.

According to the Korean media, Samsung is looking for additional suppliers for the Galaxy S6 Edge’s touchscreen panel (TSP). Apparently, Alps Electronics, currently Samsung’s only supplier, does not have sufficient production capacity to keep up with demand. It is currently unclear which other suppliers Samsung may end up working with, but S-MAC has been rumored has one potential subcontractor.

The Galaxy S6 Edge’s curved display is more difficult and expensive to produce than the regular S6’s AMOLED display. Originally, it seems that Samsung may have planned a more limited supply of its Edge design for these reasons, just like with the Galaxy Note Edge, but there appears to be a strong appetite for Samsung’s more premium design. Analysts are anticipating strong demand and 20 million unit pre-orders have already been reported for Samsung’s latest flagship.

With US pre-orders scheduled to begin tomorrow and many regions already accepting early purchases, we will have to see if high demand leads to any Galaxy S6 Edge stock shortages following the global release on April 10th.

U.S. Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge pre-orders start March 27th, sales begin April 10

samsung galaxy s6 review aa (1 of 45)

We’ve known for a while that the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge were coming to select markets on April 10th, but now Samsung has confirmed this timeframe will also apply to those in the United States. If you’re wishing to pre-order, you’ll have your chance on March 27th.

If these dates sound pretty familiar, that’s because HTC is opening pre-orders up tomorrow as well, with plans to ship the phone on April 10th. Coincidence? We think not. When you consider that the HTC One M9 is already being met with mixed reception, and add the fact Samsung is generally better at marketing, things don’t look so great for HTC here.

In addition to confirming the pre-order and shipping dates, Samsung also has revealed that the 32, 64 and 128GB models will be made available in the United States, and in the color choices of black, white and gold. That means bright blue and green will not be coming to the states. Keep in mind these are just general dates, and so actual carrier pre-order/shipping dates (and even colors) may vary a little. That said, all four major carriers are signed on to offer the Galaxy S6 and Edge from day one.

T-Mobile’s pricing details

As expected, the premium design on the Galaxy S6 means pricing is going up, but not dramatically so. The 32GB model will cost $679.92, the 64GB model for $759.99, and the 128GB version for $859.99. For those interested in T-Mobile payment plans, the 32GB model can be yours for $0 down with 24 monthly payments of $28.33, the 64GB model for $99 down and 24 monthly payments of $27.50, and finally the 128GB model for $199.99 down and 24 monthly payments of $27.50.

The Galaxy S6 Edge’s pricing has also been revealed, coming in at $779.76, $859.83 and $959.83 for the 32, 64 and 128GB versions respectively. Monthly payment rates will begin at $0 down with 24 monthly payments of $32.49, with the 64GB and 128GB models costing $31.66 a month, with the former requiring a $99.99 down payment and the later requiring $199.99 down.

Keep in mind that all of these devices also come with a free year of Netflix for those buying from the Uncarrier, a value of $107.88.

AT&T pricing details

While T-Mobile breaks down the pricing for all models, AT&T isn’t quite as clear. The carrier will carry the 32GB, 64GB and 128GB storage options in black, white or gold but only has outed pricing for the 32GB Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

The Galaxy S6 start at $22.84 monthly on Next 24, which assuming that’s zero down, as Next pricing usually is, comes to only $548.16. That’s significantly cheaper than T-Mobile’s listed price. The Galaxy S6 Edge starts at $27.17 on Next 24, once again looking to be noticeably cheaper at a total cost of $652.08. The AT&T Galaxy S6 offerings don’t come with a year of free Netflix, but they are offering $50 off on the purchase of a Samsung Gear Circle Bluetooth Stereo headset through AT&T Next.

Anyone planning on getting the Samsung Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge through T-Mobile or AT&T? For those interested in other carrier pricing, we’ll be sure to update as soon as we learn more! Also, be sure to check out our full review:

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will debut in the US on April 10

Yes, you can lay claim to an HTC One M9 of your very own at the stroke of midnight on March 27, but what if your fondness for flagships leads you in another direction? No problem – Samsung has just announced that you’ll be able to pre-order the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge also starting on the 27th, with a full nationwide debut to follow on April 10. Frankly, between these two bitter smartphone rivals and their near-identical announcement times this morning, it’s hard to say whose actually managing to steal the other’s thunder. It’s the thought that counts, right?

We just got both devices in for a bit of frenzied testing, and we’ll have a full review ready for you as soon as we can. In the meantime, feel free to check out our hands-on and video chronicling those first heady moments with Samsung’s latest devices, and keep the following details in mind. You’ll be able to lay claim to black, white and gold versions of the S6 and S6 edge, with either 32, 64 or 128GB of internal storage. Our advice? Go as high as you’re comfortable – there’s no expandable memory slot to fall back on. And as usual, all five major wireless carriers in the US will carry both S6 variants, but smaller players and MVNOs like Boost, Cricket and MetroPCS will sell the plain ol’ S6 exclusively. Speaking of carriers, they’re probably going to announce full pricing and availability for the devices any second now, and we’ll update this post with all the details as they drop.
