Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge is a royal pain to repair

Samsung's Galaxy S6 Edge in mid-teardown

You’re probably aware that you can’t easily pry open the Galaxy S6, but what’s it like if you do try? It’s something of a nightmare, if you ask iFixit. The repair-it-yourself shop has torn down a Galaxy S6 Edge, and it’s pretty clear that Samsung didn’t design its latest smartphone with fixes in mind. While most of the parts crammed into that thin frame are modular, the glass on both the front and the back makes it hard to get inside without cracking something. And you can probably forget about replacing the battery at home — it’s glued to the back of the display, beneath many of the other components. The S6’s design may be sleeker than ever, but you’re losing a lot of the accessibility of years past.

Samsung’s earnings guidance suggest a continued dip in profits ahead of Galaxy S6 launch

SAMSUNG CSCSamsung has posted their first quarter earnings guidance, and like everyone expected, it’s more of the same. The company isn’t breaking any records with their profits, but they’re also not failing. Q1 sales are sitting around 47 trillion Korean won, and operating profit is around 5.9 trillion won. Both of these numbers are substantial decreases from their performance in 2014.

Expectations for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are high, and those are both right around the corner. Samsung expects to move tons of units, so this quarter will be critical for the company to launch into the rest of 2015.

The Galaxy S6 Active is getting closer to its official release. A device currently titled as “SM-G890A” has been spotted on Bluetooth.org.

What we know about the Galaxy S6 Active currently is that it will be a water resistant and dust resistant version of its namesake (Galaxy S6) just like the other Active branded Galaxy phones have been.

What we will be looking at is a 5.1 inch display featuring a Super AMOLED+ QHD panel. We have 3 GB of RAM along with a Exynos 7420 SoC all paried with 32 GB of storage.

The only difference from the S6 we anticipate is a larger 3500mAh battery. It is also unlikely that the Galaxy S6 Active will sport the same glass build of the S6 as that would compromise the durability of the device.

As per usual, it is also expected that AT&T will be the first to carry the S6 Active.

HTC USA’s new ad with Robinson Cano involves smashing the iPhone 6, Galaxy S5 and the LG G3 [Video]

cano

HTC USA has marked the official arrival of the baseball season by posting a new commercial with its recently acquired star campaigner Robinson Canó who plays for the Seattle Mariners in the MLB.

While it’s completely different from the mildly crazy Robert Downey Jr ads we’ve seen recently, it’s certainly not better. The ad involves Canó taking his position with a baseball bat in his hand and literally smashing the iPhone 6, the LG G3 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 into pieces.

This is followed by the following text – “It takes focus and power to compete at the highest level. It takes precision to excel. It’s about playing the game for a bigger cause. And sometimes you just have to challenge convention. Let’s play ball.”

While we don’t mind the good natured ribbing against industry rival, it seems a little too extreme to be smashing phones to get your point across. What do you think about this new ad? Sound off below.

Samsung releases its own bend-test of Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

Recently, we posted about how Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, HTC One M8 and iPhone 6 Plus went through a pressure test, where it was concluded that both iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy S6 Edge bends at the same force. Although, it seems Samsung was not happy with the bend-test, hence they decided it do it themselves. They also decided to put the Samsung Galaxy S6 through the test as well. In the video below, you will see both Samsung flagships going through the test:

The bottom line is that both phones can stand the force of up to 80, and maybe a little more. As Samsung points out that “only 66 pounds of force is put on a phone while in someone’s back pocket”. By referring to the video created by SquareTrade, Samsung says that the condition and force under which the Galaxy S6 Edge was tested is a very ‘specific’ situation and it rarely occurs under normal circumstances.

Of course, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge is not made out of titanium, so it is obvious that it will break after a certain point. What are your thoughts on it? Let us know in the comment box below

LG takes a swing at Samsung over the Galaxy S6 Egde bending

It was only a matter of time before the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge bending became a thing, and it seems LG are taking the opportunity for a bit of promotion for their LG G Flex 2. Both the G Flex 2 and S6 Edge employ a curved screen but in different ways.

LG have clearly gone with the idea that because the S6 Edge has curved edges on the screen it will bend a lot easier than the curved screen found on their device. Samsung have already conducted their own bend test to try and repel the reports, but LG clearly saw a marketing opportunity and took it.

No doubt the reason the S6 Edge withstands less pressure than other devices isn’t solely attributable to the edges of the screen themselves, but you can’t blame LG for seizing the moment.
