Jumping off the hype train: Are flagship smartphones still worth buying?

A massive HD display. Cameras with a high pixel count. A device loaded with several gigabytes of RAM, and a processor with multiple cores. For several years such attributes have been major talking points when describing flagship smartphones from high-profile electronic makers, but things are starting to change. Although it may not be the most lucrative line of business for some companies, the mobile sector is currently loaded with more hardware manufacturers than ever before.
Each year a handful of high-priced top-shelf devices are announced and treated to huge launch events along with major marketing campaigns. While most of these devices live up to the hype, there are plenty of viable alternatives flying below the radar of power users and casual consumers alike.
In the early days of Android, off the chart specs and frequent software enhancements were driving forces when purchasing a new smartphone or tablet. Spec sheets certainly still play an important part, but these days the playing field is much more leveled. Mid-range gear isn’t so mid-range anymore. And while I’m personally not a fan of OEMs cranking out dozens of smartphones each year, I do recognize the importance of being able to offer consumers budget-friendly handsets.
In the early days of Android, off the chart specs and frequent software enhancements were driving forces when purchasing a new smartphone or tablet.
But are today’s low-price smartphones enough to pull consumers away from the highly acclaimed mobile gear produced by the industry’s biggest players? Let’s talk about the current state of flagships versus mid-range devices.

Design and Style
A few years back, most smartphone makers would release their flagship hardware with unique designs that made them stand out compared to other devices in their catalogs. However, things have changed over the past couple of years. Android heavyweights like Samsung, LG and HTC are now releasing mid-range and low-end handsets with design aesthetics almost identical to their respective annual flagship smartphones. While it’s most likely a cost effective measure, this new trend makes some premium handsets feel a little less chic.
Remember, casual consumers aren’t really looking for much. Believe it or not, a good looking phone with a large display is enough to coax most of them into making a purchase. This new industry trend definitely makes budget-friendly prospects look more appealing.
There’s no Need to Break the Bank

While a device’s spec sheet and benchmark scores don’t move some people, others are obsessed with a device’s internal hardware before making a purchase. These individuals are always chasing the tech industry’s new hotness and they should also be aware of diamonds in the rough. Case in point: Motorola’s Moto G. While it may not pack the punch the same punch found in flagship phone, its hardware is more than sufficient for most users.
For around $180, you can score a 5-inch 720p display, a quad-core processor, an 8-megapixel shooter and an almost vanilla build of Android. Not too shabby at all. But the former Google company isn’t the only place offering low-cost devices with decent specs. Chinese phone makers like Huawei and ZTE are producing more budget-conscious handsets that won’t put a dent in your bank account. And even though it can be somewhat elusive, OnePlus’ aptly named OnePlus One offers a lot of bang for your buck as well.
A more recent example is the Asus Zenfone 2, a mid-range device that offers a speedy Intel processor and up to 4GB RAM, depending on the configuration. While it is priced aggressively, the Zenfone 2’s performance and even aesthetics are more in-line with what you’d expect from a flagship device. Sure, the phone isn’t perfect, but our very own Lanh Nguyen certainly was impressed by the performance of the handset in his recent review.
Another alternative for frugal tech fans obsessed with name-brand products, is buying last year’s model at a discounted price.
While these types of handsets may not be the highly marketed, celebrity endorsed smartphones plastered on billboards around the world, they definitely manage to hold their own. Another alternative for frugal tech fans obsessed with name-brand products, is buying last year’s model at a discounted price.
Similar to cars in the auto industry, new top tier smartphones are released each year. Some devices do exceedingly well, but there’s always leftover inventory to clear. For example, the HTC One M9 just recently hit the streets, however it’s not a complete departure from its predecessor. In addition to a reduced price tag, a flagship phone from the previous year will likely be running the latest version of Android, or eventually receive an update to it, making the software experience nearly on par with its successor.
What About Hardware Enthusiasts?
If your love for gadgets borders obsession and you don’t mind shelling out big bucks or committing to service contracts, there are some benefits to buying a brand new flagship device. While the aforementioned alternatives fit in with most budgets, some of them will lack amenities typically offered by big-ticket handsets. Items such as LTE network connectivity, NFC support and full 1080p or 4K HD video capture are among some of the more common features missing from budget-friendly smartphones — though even this is starting to be less the case. Most of these items can be gained by purchasing an older model flagship phone, however those come with a few drawbacks as well.
The general idea behind releasing new hardware is for companies to improve upon their previous efforts. This usually means unavoidable changes to industry standards. For example, Google recently pledged its support for the USB Type-C spec, saying that consumers can expect to see it on Android phones in the near future. Another undeniable benefit of buying a freshly released flagship smartphone is raw performance. A new phone typically means the latest and greatest in terms of hardware optimized for the most recent version of Android.
The general idea behind releasing new hardware is for companies to improve upon their previous efforts. This usually means unavoidable changes to industry standards.
Final Thoughts
The evolution of Android isn’t just a story of dessert-themed software. Over the last few years, mobile hardware has made numerous advancements, bringing potent components to low-cost devices. On paper, some of today’s mid-range smartphones sound like super phones from just a few short years ago. In some regards, mobile hardware has plateaued a bit and new flagship handsets might not be as appealing to casual consumers.
People who don’t mind service contracts can purchase flagship devices at a discounted rate, with the tradeoff being a 24-month commitment. In a sense, this approach is similar to buying a year old flagship device outright, but at a slightly lower price. This setup should work for most people, but some folks just want more. As for power users who don’t mind parting with extra upfront cash, a new high-end smartphone each year is doable, but certainly not exactly necessary. However, if early tech adoption is your vice, you may want to consider selling your old phone to pick up some of the expenses that come with purchasing a pricey new device outright. Just be sure to take some important precautions before shipping it out or trading it in.

Here’s how the Galaxy S6 can help Samsung overcome the iPhone 6

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge are by far Samsung’s best devices to date. It all started out as “Project Zero”; that’s when we found out Samsung was serious about revamping their design. What sets the S6/S6 edge apart from their predecessors is not only their high-quality build construction, but what’s on the inside powering the devices. The S6 is the features the highest specs of any Samsung device to date, which includes a beast of a processor in the Exynos 7420, 3 GB of RAM, and a best in class 16 megapixel rear-facing camera that sports optical image stabilization.
What makes the Galaxy S6/S6 edge so different is that Samsung has a full-on premium device. Not only that, but with Samsung pushing full force into marketing, they have a legitimate chance at taking down Apple and the hugely successful iPhone 6. The iPhone has long held the throne over Android phones as a premium manufacturer. While companies, such as HTC, have a premium Android device, they don’t have the marketing ability or the money that Samsung has. Now that Samsung has a premium device that they can tout, it’s their time to assume the throne. Here are five ways for Samsung to make that happen.
Keep the device in stock
When new devices come out that are extremely popular, the easiest way to be successful is keep the device in stock. Nothing can kill a devices buzz more so than lack of availability. For example, the Nexus 6 received wide demand, but Motorola had a tough time keeping the device in stock. This led to consumers (sans die-hard Nexus fans) to choose a different device. There is nothing worse than waiting for a new phone, only to find out it is backordered.
For the most part, Samsung is doing a swell job. They have already sold more devices than they expected and have already surpassed Galaxy S5 sales. Most carriers continue to have the devices available, and only some outlets, such as Best Buy, have the S6 edge on backorder.
This is by far the easiest solution for Samsung to overtake Apple. With the latest reports, the Galaxy S6 edge demand has risen much higher than Samsung expected, so they have to up production. The Galaxy S6 buzz is in high gear and the last thing Samsung wants to do is let that die off. Samsung hasn’t received this much attention since the Galaxy S3, so they are definitely on to something. Easiest solution: keep making the Galaxy S6 and MORE Galaxy S6 edges.
Fast updates
This has been a sore spot for users of Samsung devices in the past. Google would come out with the latest version of Android, but Samsung wouldn’t push out updates for quite a while; sometimes upwards of six months in between updates. There is only one thing worse than waiting for a backordered device, and that is waiting for it to receive the next major Android update. If you pay for a premium device at a premium cost, you expect for it to receive timely updates.
This is something that always shied die-hard Android users away from the South Korean giant, but they have been making strides to improve that. Nearly every Galaxy device from the past two years has already received Android Lollipop, which is amazing when coming from Samsung. The newer devices, such as the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3, and Galaxy Note 4, all received the update within 90 days, give or take.
If Samsung wants to take another shot at Apple, they need to continually improve their update times. One thing that Apple has over Android is that they make the device and the operating system. This expedites the process; one update applies for all devices; whereas there are thousands of Android devices on the market and they all have to wait until Google pushes out the newest version. Once that happens, the smartphone manufacturer needs to tailor the upgrade to their device and their specified hardware.
If Samsung can continually deliver Android updates in 90 days or sooner, they will be well on their way to making consumers happy. The Galaxy S6 has changed many things about Samsung, so let’s hope update times follow suit.
Hardware
If there is one area where Apple phones, specifically the iPhone 6 are criticized, it’s in the hardware department. It’s 2015 and the latest iPhones run dual-core processors and 1 GB of RAM. Now, I will add it is quite a feat to get the performance they do out of those phones, but Apple is definitely behind the times. Enter Samsung.
Samsung has always put the top of the line equipment in their devices. They have always used the latest processor on the market and packed it with ample amounts of RAM. What makes the Galaxy S6 so special is that they went with the “top of the line” equipment that was available, which just so happened to be their in-house processor. That in-house processor is the octa-core Exynos 7420, which tops the benchmarks through and through. The Exynos 7420 coupled with 3 GB of LPDDR4 RAM brings out a blazing fast device.
One of the most used features on a smartphone in 2015 is the camera. Everyone loves taking pictures, whether it is of themselves, others, or even the scenery around them. Smartphones have turned everyone into professional (or so they claim to be) photographers.
Not only does the Galaxy S6/S6 edge blow the iPhone away in the performance category, it also features the best camera in a smartphone on the market… yes on the market. Once again, Apple is behind the times with an 8 megapixel camera whereas the S6/S6 edge touts a 16 megapixel monster that has optical image stabilization. Although, megapixel count doesn’t necessarily mean better picture it sure helps.
The Galaxy S6 may have twice the megapixels as the iPhone 6, but it also has a larger aperture. The S6 has an f/1.9 aperture compared to the smaller f/2.2 aperture of the iPhone 6. This means crisper shots in lower light, which is a challenge for most phones.
Market, market, and… market!
The standard Galaxy S6 is definitely a well-crafted device, there is no denying that. The S6 edge on the other hand is more than just a well-crafted device, it is an innovative device. Samsung needs to continue to market the device and not let up. The more people see the device, the more they will realize how premium the devices actually are.
The timing is perfect for Samsung to take hold of Apple defectors as well. Everyone knows that a year after the latest iPhone comes out, the next year an upgraded device comes out touting the ‘s’ moniker. Many people are waiting to see what Apple has in store for the iPhone 6s, but there is little to no hype surrounding the device. Not only that, it usually gets released sometime in early Q4, so there is a lot of time to sway potential customers.
Apple has had marketing down to a science and definitely knows how to ‘woo’ potential customers. For example, look at how many people are buying a $350+ Apple Watch.; it’s all in marketing. All Samsung needs to do is market the aforementioned categories about how it is better than the Apple iPhone. If Samsung can channel Apple’s marketing genius, they will be well on their way.
Don’t stop here
If there is one thing Samsung has learned is that once you make a great device, you can’t sit back and let other companies pass you by. They’ve done it in the past by being complacent with their new devices and their designs. The Galaxy S5 was just a slightly updated Galaxy S4, so much that it could have been called the Galaxy S4s in my opinion.
If Samsung really wants to take down the Apple giant, they need to continually build off their strong performances. The Galaxy S6/S6 edge are one of a kind devices and it will definitely be hard to build upon the strong showing the devices have made so far.
The Galaxy S6 edge is innovative, but there is so much potential for it to be improved. If the Galaxy S6 edge shows Samsung anything, it is that there is room for devices like that on the market. Hopefully, Samsung will put more time and effort into making it more usable and practical than ever.
According to analysts, the Galaxy S6 edge makes up for 50% of the S6 sales, so come this time next year, we may be looking at only a Galaxy S7 edge; you never know. It is feasible, and if that’s the case, the edge must bring along more defining features.
Samsung has definitely come a long way and their fate is completely in their hands. They have a ‘hit’ device on their hands and it is completely up to them where they are headed. If they have learned anything, they need to continue to push forward.

It is a happy Wednesday for owners of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 on Verizon’s network this morning as the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is starting to roll out. The update brings your flagship slab to version VRUEOB6 and brings along all the Material Design changes from Google and Samsung. You will see brighter colors, more fluid animations, lockscreen notifications and Smart Lock to name a few of the little perks.
As usual, the update is trolling out in stages across Big Red. That means not everyone will see the update this morning, or today for that matter. To check to see if you can grab it now head into the Settings > About Phone > Software updates> Check for updates and then Download Now. You will want to make sure you have well over 50% battery life, a solid Wi-Fi connection and plenty of time to kill while the update downloads and installs.

Cricket Wireless is just 9 days away from bringing consumers the latest flagship device from Samsung. This morning they have announced that they will be launching the Samsung Galaxy S6 on April 24th with a full retail price tag of $649.99. However, Cricket also now offers a Phone Payment Plan that lets customers get the device for $19.99 down with approved credit, or $49.99 down without.
“The Samsung Galaxy S 6 is a must-have device for smartphone lovers, and consumers are beginning to shop for a great deal. That’s where we come in,” said Andy Smoak, head of devices for Cricket Wireless. “Cricket’s low monthly rate plans combined with our new Phone Payment Plans make the latest premium devices like the Samsung S 6 easier to get. Add in the fact that Cricket has more 4G LTE coverage nationwide than T-Mobile, Metro-PCS, Sprint or Boost, and it makes Cricket a great choice for smart consumers.”
Pre-paid services often kept the higher priced flagship off their shelves in the past. The last few years though, has seen a change to that. While you will still find some of the more “off” type of devices like the ZTE Prelude 2 or Galaxy Grand Prime, Cricket has been keen to put the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5 and now the Galaxy S6 in the hands of those who can’t, or don’t want to, be on the big 4 networks. Now that they are offering phone payment plans too, things might just heat up a bit more.

The Galaxy S6 is more durable than the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Galaxy S6 Edge, and even the Galaxy S5
SquareTrade already started a swarm of speculation that the Galaxy S6 Edge is more bendable than the iPhone 6 Plus, but this new video is a little more positive for Samsung.
It pits the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S5, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 plus against each other to find out how they compare as far as durability. The Galaxy S6 took 1st place overall, which is surprising in that I would have figured that the S5 would win this one. The S6 was found to be the least bendable at 110 pounds of pressure, and all three Galaxy phones survived the drop test with flying colors.
The S6 came in with a Breakability Score of 4, which is considered medium risk. Here’s the complete rundown of the results….
- Galaxy S6 4.0
- Galaxy S5 4.5
- iPhone 6 4.5
- Galaxy S6 Edge 5.0
- iPhone 6 Plus 6.0
Check out the video below showing the above mentioned tests as well as a slide test and dunking test, in which each phone was submerged in water for 10 seconds.

Nuance partners with Samsung to use the Gear S smartwatch as a physician’s dictation device
Samsung’s Gear S is an interesting smartwatch; it runs Tizen firmware and has cellular connectivity along with having a curved 2-inch AMOLED display. Now it seems that Nuance, the company behind the Dragon – Naturally Speaking software, want’s to turn the Gear S into a dictation tool for physicians, according to an announcement at the 2015 Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference being held in Chicago.
Nuance has developed an app called PowerMic that can turn any iOS or Android smartphone or, in this case, the Gear S smart watch, allowing physicians to both dictate and edit information using Dragon Medical 360.
Vice President of Vertical Business at Samsung Electronics America, Ted Brodheim said. “Our Gear S like its predecessor smart watches, keeps health and fitness monitoring as a key feature, so this extension of Gear S to improve the healthcare experience is a natural partnership.
There is also another feature being demonstrated called Florence, a virtual assistant that will boost physician productivity. Physicians will be able to record vital signs, interact with patient alerts, document telephone conversations and place medication, lab and medication orders. It all sounds intriguing, and anything that can help reduce the pressure on physicians in pressure situations can only be a good thing.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is now available globally and for many, it’s an excruciating task to choose between the Galaxy S6 and its age-old rival, its HTC counterpart, the HTC One M9. To help you perhaps swing their way, Samsung has once again released an app that showcases the features from its latest flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Experience app. Like its previous iterations, the Experience app takes you through a virtual tour of the major selling points of the Galaxy S6. Samsung has even included a “Lifestyle Curator” which, after answering a few questions, will help you decide what accessories are available to the Galaxy S6 that match that particular lifestyle.
Whether or not apps like this actually help with device sales, it’s undeniable that the Galaxy S6 probably doesn’t need the help after multiple reports that the Galaxy S6, and its more expensive brother, the Galaxy S6 Edge, are selling like hotcakes everywhere. Then again, if you are on the fence, then maybe this app will convince you. To check it out, you can hit the Play Store link below and try it out for free.
