Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 gets updated to Android Lollipop 5.0.2

samsung galaxy tab s 8.4 review (6 of 27)

When it comes to updating to new versions of Android, Samsung generally isn’t the quickest OEM on the block. Thankfully, this situation has changed some with Lollipop, at least as far as many of their flagship handsets are concerned. Unfortunately, tablets have been a completely different matter, with Samsung being much slower to push out Lollipop, and has only recently started introducing 5.1 to its tablet range. With that in mind, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 (Wi-Fi) is the latest tablet to get Google’s sweet treat, moving from KitKat over to Android 5.0.2.

As with other Samsung devices, the aesthetics here don’t change that much since TouchWiz hides the majority of the Material Design improvements that Lollipop brings. Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any visible changes.

You’ll still find a new multitasking menu, improved notifications, and a variety of speed and performance improvements when compared to KitKat. On the downside, Lollipop also brings its share of new bugs, many of which are only now being addressed with Android 5.1.

While the OTA is starting to rollout now to select regions, it could still be days, weeks, or even longer before it rolls out to everyone. For those that don’t want to wait any longer than they have to, you can also try looking for the update through Samsung Kies.

Anyone manage to get the update yet? If so, did everything go smoothly during and after the update? Let us know in the comments.

Which is the better gaming device, the Galaxy S6 or the iPhone 6?

samsung galaxy s6 vs apple iphone 6 aa (7 of 29)

There’s no denying that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Apple iPhone 6 are two of the best smartphones on the market right now – not only when it comes to aesthetics, but also performance. Samsung’s Exynos 7420 processor backed by 3GB of RAM definitely gives Apple’s A8 processor with 1GB of RAM a run for its money. But when it comes to gaming, which device comes out on top? The folks over at GameBench put the Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6 to the test to find out which device is the better gaming smartphone.

The GameBench team picked a series of ten high-end games to run on each device in hopes to find out which smartphone would run the smoothest while achieving the highest average frame rate. The games used in this test consisted of Boom Beach, Kill Shot, Marvel: Contest of Champions, Modern Combat 5, Dead Trigger 2, Real Racing 3, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Asphalt 8, XCOM: Enemy Within and Monument Valley. For a bit more context, they also included performance results for the Nexus 6 and HTC One M9.

Summary

As you can see from the graphic above, Apple’s iPhone 6 was the clear winner in this test when it came to performance and stability overall. GameBench explains:

The iPhone 6 tended to run games more smoothly, with a higher average frame rate that was very stable and rarely dropped below 30fps. The Galaxy S6 came a pretty close second, with a greater frequency of performance bottlenecks that pushed the framerate below the 30fps threshold.

The HTC One M9 and Nexus 6 came in third and forth place, respectively. Both of these devices showed serious performance slow-downs in some games.

It’s worth noting that these types of tests should be taken lightly. Each device performs differently under separate circumstances, and even the slightest outlier can throw off the entire test. While these specific tests don’t explain exactly why the iPhone 6 outperformed the Galaxy S6, they still give us a good idea as to how exactly these devices will perform in everyday life. GameBench notes that due to the Galaxy S6 running games at a higher resolution than the iPhone 6 (1080p versus roughly 720p), that could cause the Galaxy S6 to produce lower scores. Additionally, a game has the potential to be better optimized for one platform over the other.

If you invest your hard earned cash into any one of these devices, odds are you probably won’t be too upset when it comes to gaming performance. If you’re interested in learning more about these tests, head to the source link below for some more information.

Next Samsung Gear smartwatch to feature round display, refreshed user interface

Samsung_Logo_02_TA_CES_2014

Select developers are receiving early access to the software development kit (SDK) for Samsung’s next Gear smartwatch. The company issued a press release today that reveals developers are already working with the technology. Also, Samsung has global partners working on creating unique experiences for the unannounced device. CNN, Yelp, Baidu, FidMe, and Apposter are all working with Samsung.

The real piece of news, though, is that the next Gear smartwatch will feature a round display and refreshed user interface. The teaser image attached to the press release shows a round display with a watch face showing weather hour-by-hour. While Samsung does not seem to be committing to Android Wear full-time, this shows that the company cares about improving its experiences for users.

Samsung starts updating Galaxy Tab S 8.4 with Lollipop

Samsung-Book-Cover-and-Simple-Cover-for-the-Galaxy-Tab-S-8.4

Owners of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 should be on the lookout for a notification letting them know an update is available. Samsung has started rolling out the update to Android Lollipop for the WiFi version of the tablet. This update is hitting about one month after Samsung started updating the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 to Lollipop. Like the update that went out for that larger device, Samsung is basing this update for the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 on Android 5.0.2.

Like most major updates these days, Samsung is deploying the update in a phased manner, so it may take a little while before it shows up on user devices. The update will be available over-the-air or through Samsung Kies.

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge-optimized Gear VR available for pre-order tomorrow

Gear VR S6 (2 of 6)

Back at MWC we took a look at a revamped version of the Samsung Gear VR, designed with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge in mind. Now that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are available, it seems that the Gear VR is finally ready to hit the market, with pre-orders beginning on April 24th through Best Buy.

So what’s new with this latest model? While the biggest difference here is the that the new Gear VR version is made with the Galaxy S6 series in mind, the revised model also is said to be 15% lighter, has an expanded 96-degree field of vision, and a few other improvements beyond this.

Samsung has yet to disclose how much the new Gear VR “Innovator’s Edition” will cost, but considering the Note 4’s model was $199, we imagine that Samsung will keep pricing about the same. What do you think, anyone planning on picking up the new Gear VR for use with their Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge?

Samsung reveals its next watch will be circular, opens up SDK to developers

round-gear-sdk

Samsung has been involved in the smartwatch game for a while now, starting with the Galaxy Gear and moving on to Tizen-powered devices like the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, Gear S, and the list goes on. When Samsung first jumped into the market, competition was pretty mild. Fast-forwarding to today, Android Wear and the Apple Watch have certainly raised the stakes considerably. We’ve been hearing rumors for a while about how Samsung’s next move will be to introduce a more premium-designed circular watch, with a recent rumor suggesting it could be called the Gear A. Now Samsung has given us a small glimpse at its plans for the future.

Does a circular Gear have a shot at one-upping its current competition in the wearable space?

Samsung has yet to reveal its upcoming watch, but the Korean giant has now announced that it is giving interested developers the opportunity to get their hands on the SDK for the company’s “next generation of the Gear device”. This marks the first time Samsung has released its wearable SDK ahead of a product announcement, and makes it clear that Samsung is aiming big with this new device. Even more exciting than the SDK is the image that Samsung revealed with the announcement. As you can see above, Samsung is pretty obviously showcasing a circular design, and looking at the list of developers, it seems several big names are getting involved already such as Yelp, CNN, and others.

So does a circular Gear have a shot at one-upping its current competition in the wearable space? It is hard to say for sure. Personally, I feel that as long as Samsung keeps its platform locked down to just its own branded phones, it will always have a hard time competing. Then again, with the apparent runaway success of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge — maybe having support for just its own devices gives it more than large enough of a fanbase.

What do you think, excited by the idea of a circular Gear watch? For developers interested in getting involved, you’ll want to head on over to Samsung’s developer portal to sign up for access to the developer preview SDK.

LG announces pricing details for the G4

LG g4 leather 2

Yesterday, three major operators in South Korea, SK Telecom, KT and LG U+, launched a pre-order campaign, in which a select number of early-adopters could reserve themselves an LG G4 for $825. However, the price of the device sparked a plethora of questions from potential customers all over the world as to why it was so expensive, seeing as the 32GB Samsung Galaxy S6 retails for $795.

Earlier today, an LG Electronics representative shed some light on the matter in an exclusive interview with ETNews. According to the spokesperson, the price of the G4 hasn’t yet been set in stone, but it’s expected to be somewhere in the region $800-900. This is because the handset is considered to be more of a Galaxy S6 Edge competitor as opposed to the S6, due to its improved camera, higher build quality and a real leather backplate.

In terms of specifications, the G4 packs a state of the art 5.5-inch Quantum display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels, a 1.8GHz Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, Adreno 418 graphics, 32GB of internal memory (expandable up to 128GB via microSD), a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera equipped with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), a dual-tone flash, an 8-megapixel front-facing shooter and a 3,000 mAh battery.

What do you think of the LG G4’s price? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below.

Qualcomm cuts outlook for 2015 due to lost chip business

qualcomm logo mwc 2015 1

Qualcomm announced its results for Q2 of fiscal year 2015, and while chip shipments increased in the period, the outlook for the entire  year isn’t as good as Qualcomm initially hoped.

Qualcomm posted $6.9 billion in revenue (GAAP) for Q2 FY2015 (the quarter ending March 29), an 8% increase over the same quarter a year ago and a 3% decrease compared Q1 FY2015. However, operating income and net income both plummeted compared to the same periods due to two major expenses that Qualcomm incurred in Q2: a $975 million charge for resolving an anti-trust investigation in China and a $950 million payment for securing advanced manufacturing capacity at a supplier (TSMC or possibly Samsung, which is reportedly going to manufacture Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 820).

qualcomm q2 fy2015

Qualcomm shipped 233 million chips in Q2 FY 2015, a 24% increase year over year. The bulk of Qualcomm’s revenues, however, comes from the licensing of its technologies to various partners; the company estimates its licensees shipped 384-388 million devices at an average selling price of $193-$199.

While we remain confident in the significant growth opportunities ahead, we are reducing our QCT outlook for fiscal 2015, primarily due to the increased impact of customer share shifts within the premium tier and a decline in our share at a large customer. In addition to our ongoing expense management initiatives, we have initiated a comprehensive review of our cost structure to identify opportunities to improve operating margins while at the same time extending our technology and product leadership positions
Steve Mollenkopf, Qualcomm CEO

For the full year, Qualcomm now expects revenue of $25-27 billion, down from the previous estimate of $26.3-28 billion. The chipmaker said the decrease is due to “a decline in [its] share at a large customer,” which is clearly a reference to Samsung, who snubbed Snapdragon 810 for the Galaxy S6 in favor of its own chip. Another reason for the dimmed outlook is the growing market share of manufacturers that don’t use Qualcomm SoCs (read Apple and Samsung).

Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition for the Galaxy S6 to be available online May 8, pre-orders start April 24

Samsung_Gear_VR_Innovator_Edition_Galaxy_S_6

The latest version of the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition will be compatible with both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Samsung announced it briefly at their Unpacked event in March, and they have followed up with availability details for the U.S.

Pre-orders will start tomorrow, April 24 at BestBuy.com, with the ability to purchase one at either BestBuy.com or Samsung.com starting Friday, May 8. BestBuy stores will also carry the device starting on Friday, May 15. They will also offer demonstrations so you can try it before you buy it. It’s not clear how many Bed Buy stores will actually carry it, but the press release does say that it will expand into hundreds of stores over the summer.

The Gear VR Innovator Edition is different than something like the Oculus Rift or HTC’s Vive in that it uses your smartphone as the display. The advantage is that it’s more affordable, but the downside is that you can’t use your phone for other things when it’s in the VR headset and the battery will drain pretty quickly. I have spent some time with the Gear VR for the Galaxy Note 4, and I can safely say that the experiences are pretty amazing.

This new version of the Gear VR Innovator for the Galaxy S6 has some enhancements over the Note 4 version. It’s smaller and the straps have been redesigned. One thing I noticed with the Note 4 version is that it can get hot in there and the lens can fog up a little. Samsung responded by adding a built-in fan for better ventilation and comfort.

Of course the Galaxy S6 has a 64-bit octa-core processor so video should be smoother than what was experience with the Note 4 edition.

Apps for the Gear VR are available in the Oculus Store of which you will be able to install on your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge. The store offers both free and paid games, as well as videos made exclusively for the Gear VR.

Samsung didn’t divulge the pricing, which is a little strange considering that pre-orders start tomorrow, but we are expecting it to come in at $199.

Along with our great partners Oculus and Best Buy, we’re pushing this mobile VR revolution forward and are grateful to work with the amazingly open and passionate VR community.”

“Expanding Oculus virtual reality to the innovative Samsung Galaxy S 6 and S 6 edge is a huge step towards helping tech enthusiasts get involved in this new revolution,” said Max Cohen, head of mobile at Oculus. “The beautiful screen really makes VR worlds pop, whether you’re playing a game like a new, full version of Herobound, watching streaming movies in Oculus Cinema, or seeing amazing vistas in high-quality photos and videos that convince your brain into thinking you’re there.”

Samsung’s continued expansion is bringing virtual reality to Galaxy S 6 and Galaxy S 6 edge users in an affordable and accessible way. The addition of Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S 6 to the Gear VR lineup means that three of Samsung’s premium and best-selling smartphones can now be used as VR devices to deliver immersive and captivating 360-degree content.

You can preorder Samsung’s new Gear VR for Galaxy S6 on April 24

If you just snapped up a Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge, it won’t be too long until you can get your hands on Samsung’s new Gear VR headset. Samsung just announced that the revamped Gear VR will be available for preorder on April 24 on Best Buy’s website. There’s no word on how much it’ll cost you, but hopefully it’ll be somewhere around the original Gear VR’s $200 price. If preordering isn’t your thing, you can pick it up from Samsung’s online store and Best Buy’s site on May 8, as well as its retail stores on May 15. And yes, you’ll also be able to try it on at some Best Buy locations. While the Gear VR didn’t impress us as much as HTC’s Vive virtual reality headset, it’s still a noticeable improvement over its predecessor, with a lighter frame and wider viewing field. It’s not exactly a reason to pick up a Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge yet, but that could change over the next year as Samsung adds more VR content.
