Texts from Mom, Samsung’s touching Mother’s Day ad
Sunday May 10th, 2015 is Mother’s Day in over 80 countries including the USA, Canada, Germany, Australia, Denmark, Greece, India, Italy, New Zealand, and Switzerland. To mark the occasion Samsung has released a new ad, which in the gentlest way possible reminds us that Moms have a way with words – especially when they text them.
The #TextsFromMom ad, featuring the Galaxy S6 Edge, shows a series of lighthearted situations where Mom can text the wrong thing. Some of the classic messages from Mom include texts ALL WRITTEN IN CAPITALS, and confusing a Selfie with a normal photo. The comic reply to the ALL CAPITALS message is of course, “Why are you shouting?” To which Mom replies, “I’M NOT CAN YOU HEAR ME???”
Probably the funniest one is when Mom sends a message asking her daughter if she wants to get some ice cream, and the emoticons are not quite the rights ones. Check out the video to see what I mean.
For those in the USA, Samsung is also running a #TextsFromMom Twitter contest until 11:59PM on May 11, 2015. The handset maker is offering 3 Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge devices as prizes.
To enter you must tweet a funny or entertaining screenshot/photo of a text from your mom, including the hashtag #TextsFromMom. You must also follow @SamsungMobileUS, and have your privacy settings set to “public” to receive a Direct Message for the Entry to be eligible. One more thing, you must get approval from your Mom prior to submission!
Even if you are in a country not celebrating Mother’s Day (like the UK, which had its Mothering Sunday in March), it is still worth following Samsung’s advice, “This Sunday, give her a call.”
Rumored Samsung Galaxy Note 5 could be an interesting device
Now that the hype from the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge has calmed down just a bit you’d think that nothing would surface from the Samsung camp right? Wrong.
We’ve heard reports that Samsung might release only one variant of the Galaxy Note 5 this fall. The new phablet could feature a 2K or a 4K flat-screen Super AMOLED display, coupled with the Exynos 7422 processor, and the company’s homegrown modem, which after the popularity of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge Samsung is very confident of right now. The Exynos 7422 is expected to be the company’s first ever all-in-one solution combining the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, and modem on a single chip. The Galaxy Alpha also had a similar configuration, but it only combined the RAM and storage in a single package with the phone.
Samsung is also testing Galaxy Note 5 units with a new Exynos 7430 chipset, but this chip is supposed to be an engineering sample only, and the company has no plan to release it for consumers. The reason may be that the Exynos 7430 isn’t ready for the public yet. Also, this could be the same reason that Samsung has testing units with a 2K displays and some with a 4K displays. The technology has to have any problems solved before consumers can get ahold of these new components.
The new model that’s expected to replace the Galaxy Note Edge is codenamed ‘Project Zen’ internally, and it will not be just a curved screen variant of the Galaxy Note 5.
The internals may not be completely high-end. It’s supposed to feature a 5.4 to 5.5-inch Super AMOLED dual-edge curved display with onboard S Pen support. The same hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor that is currently in use on the LG G4 is rumored to be driving the device.
The memory capacity for the Galaxy Note 5 is supposed to be 16 gigabytes of storage hopefully with a 32gig option at least, and possibly more. The cameras for this phablet are reported to be a 16-megapixel primary camera with Optical Image Stabilization and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera.
Now this is only the early reports of what the Galaxy Note 5 might have. Of course if and when any new information about this breaks, we will let you know.

Samsung Galaxy S6 owners reporting purple specks with front-facing camera photos
The hottest device of the year is giving some of its owners an issue when it comes to taking a picture with the front-facing camera.
Owners of the Galaxy S6 have reported that the device’s front-facing camera leaves one or more purple specks on photographs. You can see the issue in the image below where the purple speck is located at the top right section:
The problems seems to be with the sensor within the device; therefore, it should be fixable by Samsung. Those affected seem to have had success getting the device replaced by the retailer that sold them the the Galaxy S6 or Samsung itself.

Samsung and UT Austin developing centimeter-accurate GPS system for smartphones

A group of researchers at the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin have created a centimeter-accurate GPS-based positioning system that could one day provide the geolocation of virtual reality headsets, smartphones and other mobile devices. The group, which is funded by Samsung, is working to build these sensors into snap-on phone accessories that will one day make their way to consumers.
Centimeter-accurate positioning systems are nothing new; they’re already used in geology, surveying and mapping, but these systems are too large and too costly to fit into smartphones. So, the researchers found a way to combine GPS information with the antennas found in mobile devices, making this idea possible. Along with the ability to track accuracy down to the centimeter, the system will be able to provide orientation information to less than one degree of measurement accuracy.
The researchers say this precise level of accuracy could enhance virtual reality environments based on real-world settings, as well as improve visualization and 3-D mapping in other applications. Todd Humphreys, head of the research group, explains:
Imagine games where, rather than sit in front of a monitor and play, you are in your backyard actually running around with other players. To be able to do this type of outdoor, multiplayer virtual reality game, you need highly accurate position and orientation that is tied to a global reference frame.
One thing to note is that since this technology is dependent on GPS, the only way the system will be able to work is if the object being tracked is outdoors. Still, Humphreys and his research team, along with Samsung, are working to create a snap-on accessory that will be able to tell smartphones, tablets, and VR headsets their precise position and orientation. Whether we’ll first see the accessory come to us in the form of a phone case or new Gear VR headset is still up for interpretation, but the new tech is coming eventually, and it will likely improve the way we track our mobile devices.

Of course, the mobile world doesn’t stand still and neither does the rumor mill. Thanks to a set of new reports from SamMobile, we now have some early details on what Samsung may be planning for IFA and the second half of 2015.
According to the publication, Samsung will be debuting at least three products: the round Gear A smartwatch, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, and the second-gen Note Edge.

Starting with the Gear A, we already knew Samsung was working on a circular watch rumored to be called the Gear A, and more recently they even released details about the Korean giant’s circular watch SDK. SamMobile’s sources claim that the Gear A won’t actually be coming to market until later this year, alongside the next-gen Note family. This gives Samsung plenty of time to get things right, while also seeing how the public receives the Apple Watch and the next-generation of Android Wear devices.
Turning to the Galaxy Note 5 and 2nd-gen Note Edge, rumors claim that the two devices won’t be exactly alike this time around. The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will reportedly offer up either a 2K or 4K Super AMOLED display (both resolutions are supposedly in testing), alongside an Exynos 7422 processor and an in-house modem. Interestingly enough, the Note 5 will reportedly offer an all-in-one ePop solution, meaning it will combine the CPU, GPU, storage, modem, and RAM all onto a single chip.

As for the Note Edge, Samsung is reportedly aiming for a slightly lower market segment with the so-called “Project Zen” (code-name). This phone will reportedly offer a Snapdragon 808, a smaller 5.4 or 5.5-inch Super AMOLED dual curve display, an S-Pen, 16GB storage, 16MP shooter with OIS, and an 8MP front-facing camera.
There’s currently no word on whether the Note 5 or Note Edge (2nd gen) will follow the Galaxy S6’s example and drop the removable back, battery, and expandable microSD slot. It’s also hard to say how legitimate this report is, so we’d certainly take it all with a grain of salt. What do you think of the alleged specs? What would you like to see out of the Note 5 and Note Edge (2nd gen), when it comes to features, hardware, software, and design? Let us know in the comments.
New South Korean chip plant to begin production in first half of 2017, Samsung says
Samsung Electronics revealed that its new South Korean-based chip plant will begin production in the first half of 2017. As smartphone earnings begin to slow, the company hopes that the new plant will provide more growth.
Based out of the city of Pyeongtaek, Samsung plans on investing 15.6 trillion won or $14.4 billion in the factory, which is the largest amount of money Samsung has ever committed to a single facility.
“The Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant will play a central role in solidifying leadership in the mobile and server markets, which have shown rapid growth in demand recently, and securing share in the next-generation internet of things market,” Samsung said in a statement.
It’s obvious that the Korean tech giant has big plans and high hopes for this particular plant, as the company plans on investing yet another 10 trillion won to boost the plant’s capacity. That won’t be an immediate investment, and there was no word on when that is to happen, but we’ll probably hear about it closer to when the plant begins production in 2017.
It’s not clear as to what Samsung’s new plant will be producing, but there are rumors saying that it plans to produce DRAM memory chips. Another division of the plant could be allocated to producing mobile processors, which certainly isn’t too far-fetched of an idea, especially with Samsung’s move away from ARM chips. In the end, the tech giant will likely adapt the plant to market demands at the time of production.

Note 5 and Project Zen rumors arise
With the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge released and the dust finally settling over Samsung’s almost perfect smartphone, attentions are turning toward Samsung’s other flagship series, the Note line. While last year’s Note series kicked off the curved Edge line with the Note Edge, the most current of rumors highlights on what we may not see this year.
According to SamMobile sources, Samsung may only release one variant of the Galaxy Note 5 and it could sport a 2-4K flat-screen Super AMOLED display. IT will also sport a Exynos 7422 processor and Samsung’s very own modem. The Exynos 7422 will be Samsung’s first all-in-one processor, housing the CPU, GPU, RAM, modem and internal storage, all on one chip.
Samsung will also be toying with some Note 5 devices having the Exynos 7430 chipset, but those will be just an engineering example and there isn’t any plans for that specific model to be a consumer release. The same can be said about the Note 5’s display and Samsung is currently bouncing around between the 2k and 4k displays.
As far as the Edge variant that we probably won’t see, the phone that is actually set to allegedly replace the device is codenamed “Project Zen.” The device will not be a curved variant of the Note 5 but will be a device with its own non-completely high-end specs. The device is rumored to pack a 5.4-5.5-inch Super AMOLED curved display, an S Pen, a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor, 16GB of internal storage, an 8MP front-facing camera and a 16MP rear shooter complete with OIS.
Of course, as per the norm, all this should be taken with a grain of salt. Given we’re still about four months away from seeing anything announced officially from the Korean company, a lot can change between now and then. What would make you consider the Note 5?
