Galaxy Note 5 July release rumor dismissed by Samsung

Galaxy Note 4 Verizon-21

In the past couple of days, a rumor has been circulating that Samsung was moving the release schedule of its much anticipate Galaxy Note 5 up to June. However, Samsung President Shin Jong-kyun, speaking with reporters earlier today, has flatly denied the rumor.

Typically, Samsung launches its latest Galaxy Note smartphone a day before the opening of IFA in Berlin, which takes place in September. Samsung was reported to have moved the date up, as early prototypes for the handset were finished much earlier than expected.

According to the source, Samsung had already showcased the latest prototype to clients to begin taking pre-orders for a July release. The theory was that Samsung was looking to release early to get a head start on Apple this year, but we’re not sure that makes much sense. Regardless of the speculation, Shin Jong-kyun has now quashed the rumor.

The issue of lower than expected sales for the Galaxy S6 was also brought up at the press conference. A report from Korea in late April suggested that out of the 300,000 Galaxy S6 pre-orders, only 200,000 units have been sold, but we’re still waiting on accurate figures for early sales. Shin also dismissed the reports as false, as he expects the Galaxy S6 to be a strong seller for the company this year.

Sadly, it looks like we’ll have to wait until September to see what Samsung has in store with the Galaxy Note 5. In the meantime, feel free to join us in some juicy speculating.

Samsung’s cross-device sharing app arrives on Google Play

Last November, Samsung introduced Flow, which lets users seamlessly share activities between devices. (Yes, much like Apple does with Continuity.) And while the software still isn’t fully baked, the South Korean company is now letting people give it a try — so long as they have compatible Android hardware. The beta application, available on Google Play, offers a taste of what Flow can do, like allowing you to start reading an article on your smartphone, pause it and pick up where you left off on, say, a tablet. Flow Beta is only available to some Galaxy devices at the moment, and Samsung’s encouraging developers to make their apps compatible with its new feature as soon as possible.

Here’s what you need to have:

  • Galaxy S5, S6 and S6 Edge
  • Galaxy Alpha
  • Note 4 and Note Edge
  • Galaxy Tab S

Samsung launches Flow, a direct competitor to Apple’s Continuity

samsung_flow_beta_app_icon

Another service from Samsung has launched as a direct competitor to an offering from Apple. Flow, which is a response to Apple’s Continuity, transfers activities between devices in real-time. Users can also use one device with the other. For example, hitting an address link on a tablet will bring the option to view a map on a phone. Information stays on one screen while the other device manages another task. Activities can be transferred or paused immediately with Flow.

The app, which is labeled as a beta, works with the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, and Galaxy Tab S.

Sales of Samsung Galaxy S6 reach 10 million units

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Back_Lower_S6_Logo_02_TA

Samsung is expecting big things from the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge this year. After last year’s Galaxy S5 missed sales targets, it’s imperative that the Galaxy S6 get off to a great start.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge have been available for a little over month now, and it appears that Samsung is on track for a very solid year. They just announced that sales of the Galaxy S6 have reached 10 million units.

Now that might sound like exciting news, but it’s important to understand that both the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S5 reached 10 million units in their respective first months as well. So this doesn’t indicate that the S6 / S6 Edge are on a better trend. The key will be sustainability, which the Galaxy S5 lacked. There’s always some excitement when a smartphone launches, but many consumers are still under contract and are unable to buy it if they wanted to. Samsung will need to continue to capture the consumer’s attention with more marketing as other phones like the LG G4 launch and attempt to steal their market share.

Analysts still expect a solid year for both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge as they are estimating that 70 million units will be sold. If that happens, there will be a lot of celebration in Korea later this year.

Samsung brings its Continuity-like platform Flow to the Play Store

samsung flow (1)

Samsung announced Flow, its platform for transferring activities across devices, at its developer conference in November 2014. Now a beta version of the Flow app is available in the Play Store for you to try out, with a couple of limitations.

First up, at this stage, Flow is only available for users in the United States. Second, compatibility is limited to a handful of Samsung devices:

  • Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge
  • Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge
  • Galaxy S5
  • Galaxy Tab S
  • Galaxy Alpha

However, Samsung says it will expand the availability of Flow to “Samsung wearables, laptops, TVs, and even more devices,” though it’s not clear whether this includes devices from other manufacturers.

So, what exactly does Flow do? Primarily, Flow lets you transfer the state of an app from one device to another. Say you’re looking for a place to hang out tonight: you find a place on Yelp on your Galaxy S6, but decide you want to take a closer look, so using Flow, you transfer the activity to your Tab S 8.4 tablet. Yelp opens up on the tablet straight to the place you were checking out on the phone. Once you make up your mind, you can use Flow to send the activity to your Gear S, which will show you directions to the place.

This is the Transfer functionality of Flow; the other feature currently available is Defer, which is a way to save an activity for later. This works a little like Pocket or other read-it later apps, but instead of working with websites only, Flow can save activities for later. This means you can defer editing a spreadsheet, and pick up where you left off a couple of hours letter.

samsung flow (6)

Besides Transfer and Defer, Samsung says more features are coming to the platform soon: Notify (notifications across devices), Mirror (open up the same activity on multiple devices) and Split (presumably, divide an activity between devices).

Flow can be accessed from any Android app with the common Share intent or developers can easily build the feature directly into their apps to make using Flow even easier.

Because Flow works through Bluetooth or WiFi, the devices need to be physically close to each other, which is a bit of a limitation. On the flip side, your data is not sent over to the cloud, which should appease the privacy-conscious.

Many see Flow as an answer to Continuity, a similar feature that Apple introduced in June 2014 for iOS and OS X devices. And a number of Android apps that tackle some of the same problems as Flow already exist. For instance, Pushbullet let you share links, files and notifications across devices; Pocket or Instapaper let you save websites for later; while Nextbit’s Baton feature (which is preloaded with Cyanogen OS) allows the transfer of app states between devices. Still, Flow looks like a fairly polished all-in-one solution, and we look forward to giving it a run.

Check out Flow in the Play Store.

Achievement unlocked: Samsung has shipped 10 million Galaxy S6 handsets

Samsung‘s confidence in its latest flagship devices, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, is sky high, and in news that shouldn’t surprise anyone at all, that confidence has been translated into 10 million Galaxy S6 handsets shipped just after a month after the devices were officially released. In fact, a “high ranking Samsung official” allegedly said that sales, not shipments, have already surpassed 10 million and that the 10 million devices shipped mark was passed some time ago. I’m sure we’ll hear about exactly how many devices Samsung has sold so far sooner rather than later, but its impressive nonetheless.

None of this is particularly surprising considering the interest that both these devices have garnered since they were announced at MWC 2015. The only other time Samsung has experienced such popularity was with the Galaxy S4 which met the same target in its first month – arguably, though, the Galaxy S6 is in a much tougher market and has done much better to stand out among fierce competition from all corners of the smartphone world.

User Agent Profile reveals that Samsung Galaxy S6 Active will have a QHD Display

User Agent profiles are often a sneaky way to get an early look at a device, and they have served us well again after they were used to confirm a few details about the upcoming rugged Samsung Galaxy S6 Active. First and foremost, the User Agent profile gives the model number SM-G890A which we have heard will be the model number for at least one of the S6 Active variants. The other interesting tidbit from this excerpt is that the screen resolution is going to be 1440×2560 – or in other words, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active will have a QHD Display.

This all matches up with earlier rumours about the device, and we’ve since seen official renders of the device that AT&T will release. We’ve also heard that the S6 Active’s battery is going to be 3.500mAh, a significant jump up from the 2,600mAh on the vanilla device, which we can only hope is true. Jury’s still out on when Samsung is actually going to announce the device, but from the general vibe we’re getting, it shouldn’t be much longer before it is official.

Oculus names VR Jam finalists, and here are some of them

Oculus VR’s apps and games contest for the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition is in full swing. The 2015 Mobile VR Jam contest received quite a number of interesting submissions, including a game that puts you in the POV of a bullet, one that wants you to fight blind, and another that lets you text and drive without putting real people in danger. Alas, the company has no choice but to narrow the entries down to 61 finalists for the competition, 37 of which are games and 24 are apps or experiences for the virtual reality headset. Before any of them wins part of the $1 million prize pool, though, a panel of ten judges will examine them further in the next few days until they come up with a list of winners for June 3rd. You can browse through a select few of the finalists below (in addition to the ones we listed above, all of which made the cut), but you can also look at the full list on the contest website.

Galaxy S6 reportedly hit 10 million milestone in “about one month”

samsung galaxy s6 vs s6 edge aa (21 of 39)

Korea’s Yonhap news agency reports that the Galaxy S6 series (S6 and S6 Edge) hit the 10 million sales milestone in “about one month” from its release. The publication cites an unnamed “high-ranking Samsung official.”

“The sales of the Galaxy S6 series have already surpassed 10 million,” according to the Samsung executive. Samsung typically trumpets such milestones, and no other Korean outlet covered the news, suggesting that this is not an official announcement. That will probably follow over the next days.

The Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge started shipping on April 10 in 20 countries, and became available in markets from around the world in the weeks that followed.

Last year, Samsung boasted that it managed to sell 11 million Galaxy S5 units in the same time it needed to sell 10 million Galaxy S4 units a year before (about a month). Despite the strong start, the Galaxy S5 eventually turned out to be a disappointment, as Samsung sold 40 percent fewer units that it anticipated, according to the Wall Street Journal.

With the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, Samsung effectively rebooted the series, and the enthusiastic reception suggests the move has been successful. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the S6 will break the records set by the Galaxy S4, even if analysts think it will.

The fact is, the days of explosive growth are over in most smartphone markets (case in point, China) and the competition is much stronger now. That explains why, despite great reviews, the Galaxy S6 does not appear to be doing much better than its predecessors.

Samsung will probably make an official announcement on this pretty soon, but until then – are you surprised by this report in any way?
