Just a few weeks ago we heard about Samsung’s Project Valley which was rumoured to be a dual display, foldable smartphone concept. To further that chain of rumours, we have word today that Samsung has taken out a number of design patents that design exactly that: a dual display, foldable smartphone. A coincidence? I think not.
The patent itself describes quite a lot about what a potential foldable smartphone would be capable of and what features it might have, including:
- “hovering” support for styluses (and fingers!);
- a stylus mounted camera, called “The Photographer”;
- remote camera operation using “The Photographer” as the camera and using the smartphone as a viewfinder;
- using the stylus as a scanner;
- A multi-directional hinge that will allow the dual displays to be folded in various configurations;
- dual display, foldable technology for tablets as well.
With this kind of size and the presence of a stylus, we’d say this kind of device would be most suited to the Galaxy Note family – then again, Samsung might need a whole new family for devices like this. For more pictorial examples, check out the images below (with appended notes thanks to Patently Mobile):
However, with all this wonderful hypothetical technology in mind, we would do well to remember that patents are just that: patents. Samsung may never bring this technology to market if it doesn’t see fit, though we have to say that if it does, it could be quite a long way ahead of its competitors.
What do you think about the dual display, foldable smartphone described in these patents? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

AT&T teases imminent Galaxy S6 Active release

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Active has been leaked enough times for us to know it’s certainly happening but we still don’t actually known the handset will launch. If AT&T’s tweet is anything to go by however, we should see the rugged version of the Galaxy S6 launched any day now.

— AT&T (@ATT) June 4, 2015
AT&T’s teaser has followed on from several leaks, including Samsung revealing all the details on its support website. Taken straight from that website, we know the Galaxy S6 Active will have the following specs:
- Display: 5.1 inch Super AMOLED Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels)
- CPU: Octa-core Exynos 7420 chipset (4 x 2.1GHz and 4 x 1.5GHz cores)
- Storage: 32GB with possible microSD card expansion
- Camera: 16MP rear camera, 4K video recording, Optical Image Stabilisation, 5MP front camera (Quad HD video)
- Connectivity: Bluetooth v4.1, dual-band Wi-Fi ac, GPS, NFC, Heart Rate Sensor, IR blaster
- Battery: 2550 mAh battery, presumably with both types of wireless charging built in
- OS: Android 5.0 Lollipop with latest TouchWiz UI
- Dimensions: 5.65 x 2.78 x 0.27 inches
- Weight: 138 grams
setTimeout(function()
brightcove.createExperiences();
,
3000);
Looking at the specs list, there’s very little difference between the Galaxy S6 Active and the Galaxy S6 but the key change isn’t listed here; the handset is expected to bring rugged features, hence the “Active” name. The other difference is that the Active drops the fingerprint sensor, which was presumably necessary as the S6 Active should be able to stay submerged in water for long periods of time.
While the Galaxy S6 bought a large range of features, it was missing anything resembling ruggedness and the Active will look to change this by adding a case that can take a beating. The rumours of a microSD card expansion slot will certainly be frustrating to anyone who has bought the Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge and needs expandable storage. The interesting thing about Samsung’s support site is that it suggests the Galaxy S6 Active will have the same weight and dimensions as the Galaxy S6. This does seem like an error however, as the Active is expected to be thicker and heavier to account for the rugged features, which will bring a high IP rating for dust and water resistance.

The Galaxy S6 Active certainly doesn’t have the style or design of the Galaxy S6 but the specs sheet suggests that finally, we have a rugged handset that doesn’t feature a reduced specs list. If you’re looking for a rugged handset, chances are you’ll end up with the Galaxy S6 Active as it will be, by far, the best specced rugged smartphone on the market.
‘SteamCrew VR’ is the mobile VR game Oculus wants you to play
Since April, Oculus has been running a competition where new virtual reality games, designed for Samsung’s Gear VR, compete against each other for cash prizes. What began as a straight fight between 61 titles now has a winner, co-operative submarine game SteamCrew VR, which won the $200,000 first prize. The sim lets up to two players pilot a steampunk underwater vehicle, one playing as the navigator and the second manning the weapons station. Other titles that won plaudits (and piles of money) include Night Cafe: An Immersive Tribute to Vincent Van Gogh and Drift, a game where you play as a bullet being fired from a gun. Until each title ships, interested users can try out all 27 winning titles by pulling the builds from the VR Jam Website.

Samsung Galaxy J7 specifications confirmed
A few months back, there were rumors about Samsung making additions in its mid-range portfolio. Samsung is now all set to bring two new additions to its Galaxy J series family. We had already seen the Galaxy J1, now it’s the brand new Galaxy J7. The specifications of the Galaxy J7 has been confirmed by a pre-order listed on a Russian retailer’s website.
The J7 supports a 5.5 inch 720p HD screen resulting in a screen density of 267ppi. The phone is said to be running on an octa-core Marvel PXA1936 SoC, a 1.5GB of RAM and a total of 16GB onboard storage which can be further expanded by a micro-SD card. The phone is slated to have the latest version of Android i.e Android Lollipop with the same version of TouchWiz as Galaxy S6. The phone is also said to have a 3000 mAh battery and Dual-Sim support.
The specifications of the phone itself paint quite a picture that it’s going to be a mid-range phone and going to compete with the Moto g and other mid-ranged phones. There is still no word on official announcement and pricing. But we all know Samsung and how the company prices its smartphone during its initial days.

Samsung taking potshots at iPhone again with “6 Is Greater Than 6” ads

Samsung’s rise to the top of the smartphone industry was thanks, in no small part, to very smart marketing. Especially in the United States, Samsung effectively portrayed its flagships as the hip alternatives to Apple’s boring old iPhones. The “Next Big Thing” campaign was so successful that in 2013 Apple’s marketing boss told Tim Cook a new advertising agency was needed to fend off Samsung’s attacks.
Following on the massive success of its original anti-Apple commercials, Samsung has been churning out new spots making fun of Apple ever since. The latest batch is called “6 Is Greater Than 6” and sees the Galaxy S6 Edge pitched against the iPhone 6.
Samsung focuses on the unique features of its Edge device, contrasting them to the plainness of Apple’s smartphone. “Check out the edge of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge,” reads the copy. “It displays colors when your top five contacts call. The edge of the iPhone 6 displays nothing. But it has a vibrate function,” the mocking continues.
The second ad is in the same vein, but highlights wireless charging and wide-angle selfies, two features lacking from the iPhone 6.
These ads show why Samsung has been working to add production capacity for the Galaxy S6 Edge. The dual-curved screen of the Edge is highly distinctive, and people love it. According to Counterpoint data, only supply problems kept the S6 Edge from outselling its flat sibling.
After years of the same basic designs, Samsung found a way to make its phone stand out in the crowd, and customers are gobbling it up. That’s the reason why Samsung is reportedly planning to release a larger version of the S6 Edge called Galaxy S6 Plus. With a dual-curve screen of 5.5 to 5.7 inches, the S6 Plus is expected to land sometime this summer.
Samsung is keen to offer the Edge concept in more size options, and again portray itself as the hot new thing that cool kids give up their iPhones for. But will that bring its mojo back? Let us know your thoughts.
Samsung reportedly working on a Galaxy S5 Neo, Exynos processor in tow

Samsung is no stranger to releasing new smartphone variants just about every month, oftentimes recycling its familiar design language and just changing around the internals. Last year we saw the release of the Galaxy S3 Neo, a repurposed Galaxy S3 proper with slightly different specifications. It looks like the company is looking to continue that trend with last year’s flagship, according to a new rumor from the folks at SamMobile.
Samsung is reportedly gearing up to launch the Galaxy S5 Neo, which will feature mostly identical specifications to the S5 proper, with only a few notable changes. The device will feature a 5.1-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, 16GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM, a 16MP rear-facing camera and a 2800mAh battery. Even the dimensions will be the exact same as the S5 – 142×72.5×8.1mm and 145 grams. Instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 processor, though, the S5 Neo will feature a 1.6GHz 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7580 processor, a Mali-T720 GPU, and an upgraded 5MP front-facing camera. Both camera sensors will reportedly be provided by Samsung.

The new device will come in both single-SIM (SM-G903F) and dual-SIM (SM-G903FD) variants. The report states that the dual-SIM model may be released in markets such as India, China and Russia, and will feature LTE-A connectivity. Both variants will run Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, though the author wasn’t sure whether or not the newest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI would make it to the new handset. No pricing or availability information was given in the report.
Seeing as how the company probably has a few extra Galaxy S5 units hanging around due to the handset’s poor sales, rebranding the device as the S5 Neo might be a good way to get rid of some extra units. We’ll let you know if we hear anything more about this handset.
Photos of Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 leak and show a beautiful tablet
Samsung released a set of high-end tablets, Galaxy Tab S line, in 2014 which set the bar for all other Android tablets. Not only did the tablet have an incredibly thin design with high-end specs to match, but it also had a Super AMOLED display in which no other tablet could match the color range or contrast ratio of the S line. Quite simply, the Tab S was a hit, in both 8″ and 10″ versions. I would argue that Samsung shot itself in the foot by offering way too many tablets last year, which confused consumers, and most don’t even know the Tab S even existed.
Now that the Tab S has been out for about a year now, we are anticipating the next generation to be released soon. Photos have leaked onto a foreign website, and if the pictures are of the actual Galaxy Tab S2, we are going to in for quite a treat. Samsung appears to have done away with those ugly dimples(they were functional for grip), and went with a smooth back which makes the device look like an enlarged version of the Galaxy S6. The photos also show two clips in the back of the device for clicking in a keyboard case or just simple protective cover.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is rumored to come with a QHD display with Super AMOLED, 3GB of RAM, an Exynos processor, 16GB of internal memory, an 8-megapixel camera, and it is supposed to be the slimmest tablet ever created by Samsung at a super thin 5.4mm. One major downside in owning the Tab S(I have both sizes, 8″ and 10″) is the battery life. The Tab S gets maybe 5-7 hours of on screen time which just isn’t that great for a tablet. If Samsung does release the Tab S2 and it is 5.4mm, I sure hope they optimize battery life to be more efficient.

Galaxy S5 Neo will user a newer Exynos CPU and an upgraded front-facing camera
More details have come to light about Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S5 Neo. Samsung’s Neo devices typically offer a similar package to an older flagship device, albeit with slightly downgraded internals and a budget-friendly price tag. The GS5 Neo will be no exception, although it does look like it’s going to be shipping with a brand new Exynos processor.
The Exynos 7580 CPU is a 64-bit processor with 8 cores, clocked at 1.6 GHz. It’s slower than the beefy Snapdragon 801 (or Exynos 5422, depending on your region) that was found in the regular Galaxy S 5, but it should still offer pretty decent performance, especially for the price.
Other than the processor, everything else about the device will be nearly identical to the regular Galaxy S 5. The dimensions are the same, so GS5 cases should fit the S5 Neo, and you’ll also find a 1080p screen, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, and a 16 megapixel rear camera. As a bonus, the front-facing camera does appear to be getting a spec bump up to 5 megapixels, which is closer to what we’re seeing on the Galaxy S6.
Samsung is expected to announce a single SIM and dual SIM variant of this phone, which is pretty typical. We should hear an official announcement in the next few months.

Inside Taipei’s huge tech wonderland of a mall
Taipei isn’t really lacking in gadget shopping options, but, even so, the recently launched Syntrend Creative Park is noteworthy. A joint project between electronics supplier Hon Hai and Taipei’s government, Syntrend is a massive 12-story tech-focused mall covering more than two acres. And it’s got plenty of notable tenants, including storefronts from Intel, Samsung, Sony, Asus and Lenovo. For the most part, it’s a place for you to relax and check out new gear. Imagine an Apple Store-like experience for dozens of tech brands across a high-end mall, and you’ll get the idea. Now that we’ve pretty much seen all there is at Computex, we took a stroll through Syntrend to see if it really deserves to be likened to Tokyo’s Akihabara district.
After spending an entire morning at the mall, I came away mostly impressed. it was surprisingly barren (then again, I visited during a weekday morning), and there are plenty of small stores that just sell phone cases and accessories. But it was nice to be able to go to a single spot to see tech offerings from plenty of companies. There are also cafes and interactive exhibits throughout Syntrend, as well as an entire floor dedicated to activities for kids. It’s something that both nerds and families could turn into a day-long trip.
While only seven of the mall’s 12 floors were open when I stopped by, there was still more than enough to check out. All of the floors have different themes: the first, “Look,” includes Intel’s Concept store and a stylish HTC store, while the fifth floor, “Listen,” is devoted to audio gear. It’s kind of kitschy, but it was a nice way to conceive of everything happening in the mall.
