Investors temper Samsung recovery expectations
Samsung managed to get a lot of its financial mojo back earlier this year after the successful launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. The new flagship devices helped set the stage for a turnaround by Samsung after 2014’s relatively dismal performance. Although the Galaxy S6 was greeted with strong reviews and strong sales numbers initially, investors are starting to pull back a little bit on expectations for the rest of the year. Samsung is expected to announce preliminary numbers for the second quarter and guidance for the rest of the year on Tuesday.
Several analysts are projecting second quarter earnings to be in the 7.2 trillion won range ($6.4 billion USD). Park Jung-hoon with HDC Asset Management probably expresses the sentiment the best when he says “I think so long as the first digit doesn’t start with a six it won’t be a shock.”
A survey of 39 analysts by Thomson Reuters indicates 2015 profit is expected to be around 27.8 trillion won ($24.7 billion USD), an improvement over 2014’s 25 trillion won ($22.2 billion USD) which was a three-year low for Samsung.
One item that seems to be troubling investors was Samsung’s failure to anticipate interest in the curved-screen Galaxy S6 edge. Although the company is now ramped up to meet demand, they may have missed their opportunity to capitalize on buyer interest. On a larger scale, analysts are also looking at trends in Europe and China that may not be the most favorable for the smartphone market, including Samsung.

Samsung brings 2TB solid-state drives to your home PC
You no longer have to bend over backwards to get more than a terabyte of fast, flash-based storage in your home computer. Samsung is shipping 2TB versions of its 850 Evo and 850 Pro solid-state drives, giving you as much capacity as a decent-sized spinning hard drive while maintaining that all-important SSD speed. They’re only available for desktops at the moment, but Samsung is promising similarly cavernous models for laptops. Just be prepared to pay dearly for these no-compromise drives right now — the ‘standard’ 2TB 850 Evo is officially priced at $800, while the slightly faster, longer-lasting 850 Pro could easily break the bank at $1,000.

Leaked video shows full 3D render of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5
A new video has leaked showing a full 3D rendering of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 5. The video details quite a few things about the design of the company’s flagship phablet and really shows just how much inspiration from the Galaxy S6 has bled over into the Note line.
The rear camera of the device has picked up the squared-off shape from the S6, and the heart rate monitor has moved to the side of the camera, too. It looks like a full unibody design, just like the S6, which also probably means there won’t be an SD card on board here either. The sides of the devices show a single SIM tray, so unless that tray ends up being big enough to hold both the SIM card and an SD card, it’s a pretty clear indicator Samsung won’t be bringing back expandable storage.
Otherwise, it looks like what everyone was expecting from the Galaxy Note 5. Nothing too surprising, for better or worse. We’ll likely see an official announcement in September from Samsung.

LG G4 bests Samsung, Apple in latest Consumer Reports’ testing
With both the LG G2 and LG G3, Samsung and Apple have increasingly had to deal with a smartphone competitor that more and more consumers are taking a look at and opting to buy. Although LG may not be meeting internal sales expectations with the LG G4, the phone is still a hit and attracting a lot of attention from buyers. That interest may increase after a recent report from Consumer Reports that ranked the LG G4 ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Apple iPhone 6 on performance testing.
According to the latest testing results from Consumer Reports, only last year’s Samsung Galaxy S5 managed to perform better than the LG G4 and the LG G3, both of which scored 78 out of a 100-point scale. In the most recent round of testing, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Apple iPhone 6 ended up tied for fifth place.
The LG G4 was probably helped in the Consumer Reports‘ rankings by the large display and a laser-assisted focus system for a strong camera system included in the smartphone. LG has also set the device apart from the rest of the leaders in the smartphone market by staying away from the glass and metal construction trend, opting instead for leather or plastic backs.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 may get an easy way to sign PDF’s
There are a few ways already to sign a PDF on a Samsung Galaxy Note, but they are all somewhat cumbersome. However it seems things will become a lot easier thanks to a US trademark registration that seems to indicate a new feature coming to the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 .
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) asked Samsung registration what the term “Write on PDFs” means. The description that was attached to the application says it means it’s a software feature for smartphones and tablets to annotate and save PDF documents. With the introduction of the Note 5 coming out soon this could mean a big new feature for it.
A simple and quick way to edit and sign a PDF document would be the perfect edition for the Note 5 due to it’s signature S pen.

Unusually, we’ve been hearing very little about Samsung‘s upcoming flagship phablet, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 – most of the noise around Samsung is about the upcoming Galaxy S6 Edge+. So when a certain design video dropped that appears to give the Galaxy Note 5 a virtual tour, admittedly only in render form, we were extremely intrigued. And without further ado, here is the aforementioned video:
As you can see from the video, the Galaxy Note 5 takes much of its design philosophy from the Galaxy S6. One notable difference, however, is that the back of the Galaxy Note 5 is not completely flat like that of the Galaxy S6 – the Galaxy Note 5 looks to have a bit of a rounded edge which should make holding the behemoth a little bit easier. The dimensions are also given in the video (153.447×77.317×10.201), though that information means little without something to compare to – the best comparison we found is that the Nexus 6 stands 159.26mm tall, which makes the Galaxy Note 5 just a tiny bit smaller.
Perhaps the only disappointing thing about the video is that the Galaxy Note 5 doesn’t appear to have a USB Type-C port, instead opting for a traditional microUSB – it’s probably not a deal breaker for the Samsung faithful, but it does stop the Galaxy Note 5 from being futureproofed.

Video allegedly showing the Galaxy Note 5 design shows up
Summer is heating up and so are the rumors swirling around Samsung’s upcoming devices. We already have a good idea of what to expect from the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, and now a video based on CAD drawings promises to give us a (partial) look at the design of the Galaxy Note 5.
The video above, published via @Onleaks by French tech blogger Steve Hemmerstoffer, allegedly shows a 3D mockup of the Galaxy Note 5 made based on CAD product schematics. The origin of the schematics is unknown, though we can speculate that they might be sourced from a 3rd party case manufacturer that had advanced access to the Note 5.
With this said, there’s absolutely no guarantee that this is the real, final design of the Note 5, so don’t put too much stock into it just yet.

The design of the device resembles that of the Galaxy S6, with the biggest difference being the tapered profile of the back, which resembles the curved back of the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro. The curved sides are almost the reverse of the S6 Edge design, where the back is flat and the screen hugs the sides.
Some other, predictable design elements that can be spotted are the protruding camera and the flash/HR sensor on the back, and the S Pen slot on the bottom. The 3D model suggests the Note 5 will feature a regular microUSB port, as opposed to Type C, as some sources have claimed before.
The model measurements (153.44 mm x 77.31 mm) are very close to the Note 4, suggesting the Note 5 will stick with a 5.7-inch display. The 10.2 mm thickness of the model seems rather large, but it includes the protruding camera, so the phone body could be a couple millimeters thinner.
There’s no clue in this 3D model about the materials that Samsung will use for the Note 5, but metal and glass look like a good bet. If that’s the case, the back cover of the phone will not be removable, which is bound to disappoint a lot of fans.

@Onleaks has supplied us with a number of accurate leaks in the past, but, again, we must stress that this “leak” is completely unsubstantiated for now.
Separately, Italian tech site HDBlog published a set of renders that it claims it created based on information about the Galaxy Note 5 from unspecified sources. The renders were published today, but it’s not clear if they are based on @Onleaks’ model or on independent information. The images show the same curved back, with a metallic frame sandwiched between two panes of glass.

What do you think of the 3D model? Do you think it’s credible?
Samsung UK says its Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 will not be getting Android Lollipop

If you’re somehow still using a Samsung Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note 2 in the UK, the branch of Samsung there has just given you some bad news: the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 will not be getting Android Lollipop. That means your devices are going to be staying on the old Android KitKat build which you undoubtedly are running right now. This seems perplexing to us as other branches of Samsung, such as Poland, Finland, and Denmark, have announced that Android Lollipop will be coming to their devices, whereas Samsung UK joins Samsung Gulf as regions that won’t be getting it – you’d think one variant would translate easily to another, but what do we know.
While this news is probably disappointing to Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 owners, we can’t exactly say that we’re surprised – Samsung was aiming for 18 months of support for its flagship devices and has clearly exceeded this for at least some of its portfolio, so it was only a matter of time before its 2012 flagships started to make their way out.

Samsung’s next Tizen phone may be more upmarket

The Tizen OS powered Samsung Z1 has been selling rather well in the few markets where it is available. Therefore would shouldn’t be too surprised to hear that a successor could be in the works, and industry insiders are suggesting that the next Tizen smartphone, tentatively named the Samsung Z3 (SM-Z300H), will feature slightly more upmarket hardware specifications.
According to the report, the Samsung Z3 will feature a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED display, 1.5GB of RAM and will be powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core Spreadtrum SC7730S SoC, which is a decent jump that should put the handset closer to the middle tier of the market.
Other internals include 8GB of storage space, an 8MP rear camera with LED flash, 5MP front facing camera, a 2,600mAh battery, and dual-SIM compatibility. The Z3 apparently sizes up at 141.5 x 70 x 9.5 mm and will weigh approximately 140 grams. The phone is also said to feature an updated Tizen 2.4 operating system.
Recently, Samsung announced that it would be releasing a Gold Edition of the Z1 smartphone, to celebrate over 1 million units sold so far. The smartphone was also the best-selling phone in Bangladesh back in Q1 and has continued to exceed sales expectations thanks to its low price point.
Pricing details for the Z3 were not included in the rumor, but we can probably expect a slightly higher price point to accompany the improved specifications. We’ll have to see if this new handset can continue to appeal to the entry-level market. The next Tizen smartphone is expected to launch sometime in the second half of 2015.
