Samsung’s next Galaxy Tab S should be a whole lot wider

Samsung's leaked Galaxy Tab S2

Don’t look now, but Samsung’s widescreen Android tablets might be going the way of the Dodo. Tabletmonkeys claims to have leaked images of the Galaxy Tab S2, and the high-end slate appears to be adopting the same wide, iPad-like aspect ratio as the Galaxy Tab A. In fact, it might lose size and resolution compared to the original Tab S lineup — instead of 8.4- and 10.5-inch 2,560 x 1,600 displays, you’d be looking at 8- and 9.7-inch 2,048 x 1,536 panels. That wouldn’t be so hot for your widescreen videos, but it’d be better for web browsing and anything else that benefits from portrait mode viewing.

Not that they’d be taking steps backwards in any other respect. Both S2 models are reportedly wafer-thin at just over 0.2 inches thick, and they’d be the lightest in their respective classes at just under 0.6 pounds (for the 8-inch version) and 0.9 pounds (for the 9.7-inch device). Not surprisingly, you could also expect Galaxy S6-class guts that include an eight-core Exynos 7420 processor and 3GB of higher-performance memory. Curious? You might not have to wait much longer to give these tablets a shot, since they could be announced as soon as July 20th.

Samsung’s big Galaxy S6 Edge Plus reportedly breaks cover

Samsung's reported Galaxy S6 Edge Plus

Samsung may not be pinning all its hopes for summer phone supremacy on the Galaxy Note 5. All About Samsung has posted photos of what’s supposed to be a store dummy unit for the Galaxy S6 Edge+, an extra-large version of its dual-curve flagship. There isn’t much to reveal about what’s under the hood, but it’s clear that the screen is about as large as what you’d see on the Note 4 (that is, around 5.7 inches). Also, there are no obvious hardware tricks here — the curve isn’t pronounced enough for a Note Edge-style strip, and you certainly aren’t going to find a pen, microSD slot or removable battery.

As for what’s under the hood? That’s not so certain, although the current talk is that you might find the same eight-core Exynos 7420 chip that you get in the regular S6 Edge. If so, that’ll make the Edge+ little more than an upscaled version of the phone you already know. It’d be a challenger to Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus and its eventual sequel, rather than an upgraded device à la HTC’s One M9+. Not that we’re necessarily complaining, especially as FCC filings suggest that the Edge+ is coming to major US carriers. Historically, Samsung has only offered one giant high-end phone at a time — if this leak is accurate, you’d finally have the choice of additional big-screened Sammys that aren’t big steps down.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S2 is slimmer, smaller and squarer

Samsung has revealed its new 8-inch and 9.7-inch Galaxy Tab S2 models, and they’re considerably different from last year. As revealed by a leak yesterday, it shrunk both of last year’s models and killed the widescreen (16 x 9) aspect ratio, instead giving them an iPad-like 4 x 3 format. The company said that’ll help “recreate the viewing experience of browsing through traditional print media,” and make it easier to read e-books and web pages. On the other hand, less of the screen is now available for watching movies, particularly since both Galaxy Tab S2 models have also taken a step down in resolution from QuadHD to 2,048 x 1,536.

Obviously, Samsung thinks people use their tablets for reading more often than watching movies. It’s placed extra emphasis on that with the new Super AMOLED screen, which has a reading mode that “modifies the screen’s brightness level to help users read content for longer periods of time.” Helping as well is the fact that both models have slimmed down to 5.6mm and weigh in at 0.85 pounds (9.7-inch) and 0.56 pounds (8-inch). That’s a millimeter thinner and about 10 percent lighter than before.

Spec-wise, the new model is a nice leap over last year. The Tab S2 has an 8-core chip running at 1.9Ghz/1.3Ghz, likely the Exynos 5433 used in the Galaxy Note 4 (but not the Galaxy S6’s top-of-the-line Exynos 7420, as rumored). Other specs include 3GB of RAM, 32/64GB memory (expandable via MicroSD) and 5,870 mAh/4,000 mAh batteries. Those are considerably smaller than before, but then again, they won’t have to drive nearly as many pixels on the lower-res AMOLED screens. Meanwhile, the Tab S2 has a built-in fingerprint scanner like last year’s model, and will run Android 5 Lollipop with Samsung’s latest, toned-down version of TouchWiz.

The Galaxy Tab S2 will launch next month, but Samsung hasn’t said how much it’ll cost yet. Last year, however, it ran $400 and $500 for the smaller and larger models, respectively.

Galaxy A8 to launch in South Korea on July 24th

Samsung Galaxy A8

Following its unveiling in China last week, the Samsung Galaxy A8 looks set to launch in its home country of South Korea on July 24th, in a partnership with local carrier SK Telecom.

The Galaxy A8 will initially be available in the white and gold color option, at a cost of ₩649,000 (approximately $560). For the price, Samsung is offering customers one of the thinnest Android phone’s ever made, with a depth of just 5.9mm.

In case you missed last week’s unveiling, the Galaxy A8 features a 5.7-inch display with a 1080p resolution, an octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage with a microSD slot. There’s also a 16 megapixel rear camera, 5 megapixel front camera, 3050mAh battery, finger print scanner and Android 5.1.1 on board.

The A8 features everything you could ask from a daily driver and nicely bridges the gap between Samsung’s existing mid-range and flagship products. Although it might be a little pricey when compared to Samsung’s Galaxy S6 flagship.

SK Telecom will be accepting pre-orders for the A8 from 10am on July 21st until the 23rd. The black case option will also be made available at a later date. Other than China and South Korea, Samsung has not detailed any other launch regions, but we can probably expect a few more announcements as the weeks roll by.

Samsung officially announces the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 and 9.7

Yesterday, some press renders of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 and 9.7 leaked early, but it doesn’t seem to matter much as Samsung has today officially announced the devices. Hailing them as the “essential tablet for experiencing digital content“, the Galaxy Tab S2 tablets have adopted an iPad-esque approach this time around – doing away with the original Tab S’s 16:10 ratio display, the Tab S2 adopts the 4:3 resolution ratio that the iPads have made so popular. Notably, both the 8.0 and 9.7 variants are only available in portrait orientation (last year, the 10.5 Tab S was landscape oriented).

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 and 9.7As expected, the Tab S2 tablets utilize the same chip as the Galaxy S6, the Exynos 7420, and both have 3GB RAM and 32 and 64GB storage variants. In fact, apart from the battery capacity and physical size and shape of the two variants, the two tablets are pretty much exactly the same (think iPad and iPad Mini). One thing that Samsung is touting on its Tab S2 devices which will likely be a differentiator relative to the iPads are its Super AMOLED displays (2048×1536), widely accepted to be some of the best displays in the mobile device market. No pricing was confirmed for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 and 9.7, but Samsung says the devices will be available in August.

Samsung finally announces the Galaxy Tab S2 with 4:3 aspect ratio and microSD card slot

galaxy tab s2 white angleRumor after rumor has leaked about Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S successor, and it’s finally been announced. This announcement was much quieter than last year’s, although this tablet isn’t quite as exciting and groundbreaking as the original Tab S.

Appropriately titled the Galaxy Tab S2, this year’s version will come in two screen sizes. You’ll be able to pick between an 8.0-inch and 9.7-inch display, both with screen resolutions of 2048×1536. You might notice those numbers look a little different from last year, and you’d be right; these tablets have adopted a 4:3 aspect ratio, different from the widescreen view on the older generation Tab S. This is similar to the Galaxy Tab A line that Samsung has been selling this year.

Other hardware on the Tab S2 is top notch, which I’m sure everyone expected. The processor is a beefy octa-core Exynos 533 paired with 3 GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel/2.1 megapixel camera combination, and Android 5.0 with Samsung’s latest Touchwiz overlay. This includes an offer for 100 GB of Microsoft OneDrive storage, and support for Samsung’s themes that were introduced with the Galaxy S6. You’ll find 32 or 64 GB internal storage options, plus a microSD card slot with support for up to 128 GB cards. Samsung has also moved to a touch-based fingerprint scanner instead of the clunky swipe-based fingerprint scanner.

Samsung hasn’t announced pricing for these devices, but they’re set to go on sale next year. The original Tab S launched at $399 for the smaller screen and $499 for the larger screen, although this doesn’t account for larger storage options and optional LTE connectivity.

What are your thoughts on the new Galaxy Tab S2? The original 8.4-inch Tab S has been my daily driver for the past several months, and so far I haven’t seen much of a reason to upgrade. The newer fingerprint scanner is a nice touch, although I’m not a fan of the different aspect ratio, especially when it comes to watching videos.

You can find a gallery of images of the Tab S2 below, as well as Samsung’s full press release.
