Samsung’s latest monitors wirelessly charge your phone

It’s not coated in gold, but Samsung’s newest screen — a monitor this time — packs wireless charging for mobile phones (and other Qi-compatible gadgets. (Yes, functionality you’d actually want in your office monitor… if you have a wirelessly charging phone.) The full-HD 24-inch S24E370DL and 27-inch S27E370DS displays come with AMD’s anti-flicker gaming tech as well as 178-degree viewing angles. Samsung’s not offered a date or country for release, but we’d expect it to appear (somewhere!) by the end of the year. Expect a steady trickle of new products from the company: it’s gearing up for Europe’s biggest electronics show, IFA, which kicks off in September. Samsung fridges! Washing machines! Conceptual laptops! And possibly a new Galaxy smartphone. If you’re good.

New leaked photos of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 S-Pen seemingly puts auto-eject debate to bed

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been getting entirely too excited at the prospect of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 S-Pen having an auto-eject mechanism – Samsung did patent the design for one after all. Early leaked renders of the Note 5 also suggested this, showing the S-Pen flush with the bottom of the device. However, rumours started coming in that said that the S-Pen would not have an auto-eject mechanism, and the latest leaked photos of the Note 5 today look to have put this debate to bed – check them out below:

As you can pretty clearly see, the housing for the S-Pen has a small gap which looks like it would be used to dig the S-Pen out with your finger – while the pictured device is obviously a prototype, it seems unlikely that Samsung would change an integral part of the design once it was in physical form. Apart from this S-Pen revelation, there’s not much to see in these photos as there is a case on the device hiding many of the features. If the rumours are true, however, the Note 5 itself should be announced on August 12th when we’ll know the full story.

First pictures of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Mini leak; August release?

With all the commotion between the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Active, S6 Edge+, and Note 5, it’s no wonder that very little has been said -or seen- of the more “diminutive” form factored product in Samsung’s sizable stable of smartphones. Indeed, it has been assumed there would be a Galaxy S6 Mini in light of the ghosts of trends past, but we nothing solid had materialized. Until now, that is.

The images contained in this piece originated from a user who sent them to Phone Arena and while taken in quite poor lighting, look more-or-less legitimate. (Note that we have chosen to include the variants posted on SamMobile as they offer a clearer view of the product). It’s possible the device has markings on it which would give away the identity of the photographer hence the obscurity, or perhaps they are indeed just a hoax.

s6 mini

We blew out the levels to take a closer look – It appears to feature the same metal styling of the S6, suggesting continuity of design language

Assuming this is indeed the Galaxy S6 Mini, the device looks to have the same aluminum-frame and glass sandwich construction as its big brother. This alone is quite impressive given that in the past, the Mini line has always gone for mediocre specs and thus it would not have been outlandish to imagine an S6 Mini that was more like a Galaxy Alpha. We would expect the S6 Mini to be offered in the same color options as the standard model, though perhaps Samsung might get creative and issue a Green variant like the S6 Edge has exclusively.

In light of the glass and metal, it raises the question as to just how seriously Samsung is going to take -and make- the product. While smaller size variants of flagship products are most always reductions in more ways than one, Sony’s Xperia Z3 Compact was not only every much as impressive as its’ big brother, but truly served to put all other OEMs on alert for their approach to the form factor.

If the Galaxy S6 Mini can couple this design with specs that are even on-par with last year’s Galaxy S5 it would be a major win for the device. If it was every much an S6 just smaller, Sony itself might be feeling the heat. While there is virtually nothing to support either of these ideas, at the very least the device is said to have a 4.6 or 4.7-inch screen.

sony xperia z3 compact review aa (20 of 21)

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact showed the world that “small” need only pertain to stature, not specs.

Curiously the lack of a Galaxy S6 Edge Mini is noted, though given the upcoming release of a S6 Edge+, perhaps Samsung doesn’t want to spread the unique point too thin. The S6 Edge+, along with the Galaxy Note 5, and Gear A (“Project Orbis”) are said to be launching in mid-August due to Samsung’s desire to avoid Apple-overlap. Indeed the source site of this story suggests the S6 Mini might be included in the event as well.

Only time will tell for sure, but while waiting, we want to hear from you! Are you interested in the S6 Mini? What kind of specs would it have to pack to meet your needs? Leave us a comment below!

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 leaked images show front, software and stylus release method

samsung-logo-mwc-2015-8

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is all the hype right now. We have plenty of information on the new phone already, which we have compiled and shared with you on our rumor roundup, but the rumor mill is not stopping. Today’s new trio of leaked images show us a bit more of the over-sized smartphone, displaying what could be a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 prototype.

The first image gives us a glance at the front of the phone, which we seldom get to take a look at, especially with the screen turned on. One can even admire what TouchWiz will be like in the new generation Galaxy Note. The UI touts the usual colorful icons and “bubbly” experience. In addition, there are some helpful shortcuts and content on the top. Oh, and the icons in the home screen tell us this happens to be an AT&T version. This doesn’t tell us much we didn’t know, but it’s still nice to admire the gadget.

The most interesting part of this leak is the couple other photos, which showcase the stylus dock. It was previously believed the stylus would have auto-ejecting capabilities. Then rumors suggested it would be a push-to-release mechanism. These rumors were then contradicted by Korean source, which indicates the stylus release method will be similar to all previous Note handsets.

These new images do corroborate the S Pen will have to be manually removed, just as it has been in the past. There seems to be a small gap in one side of the accessory, making it possible to pull it by using a finger nail.

As it goes with all rumors and leaks, though, we would advice that you don’t hold your breath on any of this information. Details keep changing and we won’t know the definite truth until Samsung takes the stage. That should be this coming month.

Don’t forget to keep it tuned to our Samsung Galaxy Note 5 rumor roundup! We keep updating it as new details emerge, so that is really your one-stop shop to everything relating to Samsung’s new phablet.

Latest Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus rumour says it will have Exynos 7420, 4GB RAM and 3,000mAh battery

We’ve kind of lost track how many rumours there are about Samsung‘s upcoming flagship devices, but here’s one more anyway. The latest Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus rumour tries to confirm exactly what hardware is inside the device – early rumours suggested the device would have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, however today’s rumour says that the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus (or “Edge+” as the trademark reads) will actually have an Exynos 7420 processor, the same Samsung home-grown processor to feature in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

The rumour goes on to say that the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will also have 4GB RAM – a point previously disputed – and will also have a 3,000mAh battery. Seeing as the Galaxy S6 Edge had a 2,600mAh battery, we’ll see if the bump to 3,000mAh is enough to accommodate the larger screen on the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. All this information is from an anonymous source, so it’s best taken with a grain of salt, but for the most part, we can picture these being correct.

Benchmarks for Verizon’s Galaxy Note 5 appear online

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_Main_02_TA

Today, alleged benchmarks for the Verizon variant of the Galaxy Note 5, SM-N920V, have come out.

The benchmarks indicate that the phone, which is running Android 5.1.1, will indeed come with Samsung’s Exynos 7420 processor, the same processor found within the Galaxy S6. The single-core score came to 1418 and the multi-core score was 4399 points. This is interesting because despite having 4GB over the Galaxy S6’s 3GB of RAM, it has a benchmark score slightly lower than its older sibling the Galaxy S6.

Do note that this may not be the actual device and just be a unit for testing. In the past, Samsung saved its Galaxy Note devices for IFA in Berlin; however, this year, the company may jump ahead and reveal the Galaxy Note 5 on August 12.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Mini gets spotted by blurrycam

As inevitably as there is a Galaxy S device released by Samsung, there is always a Galaxy S Mini release to follow. Today, we are apparently getting our first look at the smaller version of the Galaxy S6, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Mini, and well, there’s not much to tell in the photo apart from the fact it looks very similar to the Galaxy S6. With no point of reference, we can’t really say how much smaller it is than the Galaxy S6, but history tells us we’d likely be looking at a device in the 4.5-inch region. Check out the photos that were included in the leak below:

Based on previous Mini devices from Samsung, we can expect to see significantly scaled down hardware for an accordingly shrunk premium price. What’s interesting is that the rumours are pointing at the Galaxy S6 Mini being announced sometime in August – it just so happens that Samsung is apparently going to have an event to announced the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus in August, so we can probably expect the Galaxy S6 Mini to make an appearance there too.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 may not come with auto-ejectable S Pen

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_S_Pen_Button_Closeup_TA

Last week, patents belonging to Samsung for an auto-ejectable stylus were uncovered. Many believed that the technology protected by those patents would be implemented into the Galaxy Note 5. Those hoping for this feature may have to wait a bit longer as a new report claims that Samsung’s patents for an auto-ejectable stylus have no effect on the Galaxy Note 5’s design.

It seems the Galaxy Note 5’s S Pen similar to previous iterations of the stylus. What the phone will likely bring, though, is a revised design, new colors and more accurate pressure sensitivity. Sources have also confirmed that the Galaxy Note 5 will come with a embedded battery pack sealed off by a metal chassis made of glass on the front and back and an all-metal rim. This points that the Note 5 will follow design cues from the Galaxy S6.

The Galaxy Note 5 could be coming on August 13 alongside the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and a new Tizen smartwatch, called Gear A, may debut as well.

Rooted Samsung phones won’t be able to use Samsung Pay

samsung-pay-galaxy-s6-edgeSamsung first introduced Samsung Pay at the same time they showed the world their S6 and S6 Edge. What sets it apart from the competition is it can use both NFC (near field communication) and MST (magnetic secure transmission). This means stores don’t have to buy more equipment in order to accept it.

So far Samsung Pay isn’t out in North America, but Samsung has started a testing trial in their home country, South Korea. Although not confirmed by Samsung the testing trial has shown rooted devices getting denied access to use the service.

Users are getting an “Access denied” screen that reads “Samsung Pay has been locked due to unauthorized modification.” when trying to use the service on a rooted device.
