Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo confirmed to get Lollipop

If you’re the owner of a Galaxy Note 3 Neo, then you’ll be pleased to hear that Samsung haven’t forgotten you when it comes to Android 5.0. Despite Android M being right around the corner, Samsung took to Twitter to confirm that the device will receive Android Lollipop in the UK.

The new software will be Android 5.0, so it is already woefully out of date, but an update nonetheless from the Android 4.4.3 the device is currently running.

Included in the update for the Galaxy Note 3 Neo is a redesigned recent apps menu, new lock-screen card notifications, easier accessible quick settings, and improved battery life.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo confirmed to get Lollipop in the UK

Galaxy Note 3 Neo White

On Twitter, Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy Note 3 Neo will be getting the Lollipop software update in the United Kingdom shortly. Samsung stated that it hasn’t forgotten about it and is currently working on it.

The new build, based on Android 5.0, will include the Material Design overhaul and 64-bit ART compiler that makes apps open faster. It will also come with updated features such as a redesigned recent apps menu, new lock-screen card notifications, easier accessible quick settings, and improved battery life.

This will only be the second update the handset has ever received since it launched with Android 4.3 out of the box, the current build is Android 4.4.3. Thus will be a pretty sweet update.

Android Authority this week – August 2, 2015

oneplus 2 launch aa (43 of 93)

Android fans, this week brought us not one, but two excellent smartphones selling for just $400, the OnePlus 2 and the Moto X Style. In other top news, the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus leaked extensively, details and images of Sony’s next smartphones surfaced, and Google rebooted Android One with the new Lava Pixel V1.

Inside AA HQ

It’s clear from the events of this week that the next battleground for smartphone domination is the $400 price range. While phones like the Axon, Zenfone 2, and even the OnePlus 2 are important, when Motorola entered the fray with its own no-compromise flagship phone, the game has changed for good. It will be very interesting to see how Samsung, LG, or HTC react to this paradigm shift over the next months.

We have a new team member! Krystal has published her first review on Thursday and the reactions have been very positive. Yes, AA finally has a woman in the team, but we’re happy to see that you guys like Krystal’s tech knowledge and video editing skills. Let Krystal’s AA video be the first of many.

This week’s giveaway is a beautifully slim Oppo R7. Head over here to get your ticket and good luck!

China forces Samsung to allow “unwanted apps” to be deleted from Samsung handsets

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Samsung‘s bloatware apps are legendary in the Android community and the fact all these apps can’t be deleted has turned away many an Android purist. Thankfully for those people (in China at least), a consumer rights committee has been successful in forcing Samsung to allow “unwanted apps” to be deleted – Samsung says it will be providing software patches next month which make this possible. And the committee’s yardstick? The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N9008S) which allegedly had 44 pre-installed apps of which 24 could not be removed – that might not sound like much, but it all adds up. Samsung has said that this will even be allowed on their most recent devices, including the Galaxy S6.

And the committee is keen to see this solution through, saying: “If Samsung fails to meet its own promise, then the legal tussle will be continued and expanded”. I’m genuinely surprised that Samsung has backed down and conceded this battle – if all it takes is a committee of well informed individuals to make Samsung, or any company, make their bloatware removeable, then I don’t know why this hasn’t been happening more – then again, this decision only has jurisdiction in China, for now.

Leak again claims that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 won’t have a microSD slot

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

We always suspected that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 won’t have a microSD slot, much like the Galaxy S6, but the latest leak puts yet another nail in the coffin – and by now, there are a lot of nails. Leaker @evleaks has posted a list of specs for the Samsung Noble, a name known to be the codename of the Note 5, that ends with the suggestion of “no SD” – it’s not particularly surprising seeing as Samsung has removed the microSD slot from all its recent devices, but we still held out hope for its larger brethren.

The other notable spec from @evleaks’ tweet is the processor, alleged to be a Exynos 7420 – this is the same chip as the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, however we’ve been hearing conflicting rumours that the Note 5 will actually have the newer Exynos 7422. Obviously, we won’t have long to find out which of these stories are correct as the Note 5 is due for announcement on August 13th, however it does suggest the possibility of different variants for different regions, which wouldn’t be unusual.

More details surface on Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 5, no expandable storage included

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_5_Galaxy_S6_Edge_Plus

Shortly after sharing pictures of the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Evan Blass posted another leak containing detailed specifications for one of the upcoming devices.

Blass states that the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 will sport a 5.66-inch QHD display, 4GB of RAM, and Exynos 7420 SoC (4×2.1GHz+4×1.5GHz). The phone will come with the same 16MP rear-facing camera and 5MP front-facing camera as the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. It will come with Android 5.1.1 pre-loaded and start at 32GB of internal storage. Most noticeably, although previously rumored, the upcoming flagship will reportedly not include expandable storage.

Samsung has already sent out press invites to attend its announcement where it will launch its new flagship(s) alongside the Gear A smartwatch. It will all go down on August 13 in New York City.

Press renders of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus leak out

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

By now, there’s very little secret about the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Samsung’s latest flagship devices which will be announced on August 13th, however when a press render is leaked out, we’re not going to say ‘no’, especially when it comes from Mr. @evleaks. Yes, Evan Blass, or @evleaks as he is best known as, has leaked out an image which shows the two Samsung phablets looking very pretty standing next to each other – check it out for yourself:

What’s neat about this particular image is that the S-Pen is in full view, and we can see that the leak we have previously was of a genuine S-Pen – what we’re still trying to figure out is how the damn thing works, especially since recent images have shown the S-Pen flush with the bottom of the device with no way to pry it out. Of course, all will be revealed on August 13th, where Samsung is expected to announced these two devices, as well as a new round-faced smartwatch, the Samsung Gear A.

What do you think about what is likely the final design of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Galaxy Note 5 major specs and press image revealed by @evleaks

note 5 edge s6 plus evleaks

Gone are the days when Samsung was capable of keeping its wares under covers until the big reveal. The Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus have been leaking profusely and now ongoing inside info purveyor Evan Blass just opened the tap a little more.

@evleaks published what appear to be press images of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, along with some of the key specifications of the S Pen-sporting device.

The images don’t reveal anything we haven’t seen in various leaks and renders before, though there’s one inconsistency that cast a shade of doubt over their accuracy: the capacitive keys on the Note 5 appear to be oversized, though that’s likely just a graphical error.

Moving on to a tweet that @evleaks put out just minutes ago, specs of the Galaxy Note 5 (SM-N920) allegedly include an Exynos 7420 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 5.66-inch 2560×1440 display, a 16MP rear camera (likely featuring the ISOCELL sensor that Samsung unveiled earlier this week), a 5MP front camera (probably wide angle), Android 5.1.1 and no microSD card.

Yes, Samsung appears determined to phase out microSD, come hell, high water, or violent fan revolt.

With a couple of weeks to go until the official debut of the Note 5, it looks like Samsung is running out of major surprises to spice up its Unpacked event – unless you consider the circular Gear A smartwatch a major device. For a look at all the other reports about the Note 4, check out our rumor roundup.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus press renders leaked

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_5_Galaxy_S6_Edge_Plus

Nowadays it so common for leaks and rumours to divulge full specifications of devices that keeping them under wraps until their official launch will be a real feat to achieve for any company. Anticipation has been building up around Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus for sometime, and now, what appears to be their press renders, have been leaked by @evleaks.

Evan Blass had retired from the leaking business a while back, but he seems to be making a comeback by posting images of soon-to-be-announced Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus via his Twitter handle @evleaks,.

Both devices are expected to be launched globally on August 13th. If we go by the earlier leaks, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ is a larger variant of the Galaxy S6 Edge. According to its listing on Indian import-export website Zauba, the phablet will feature a 5.7-inch display and 16-megapixel rear snapper as seen in the S6 Edge.As far as the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 are concerned, rumor has it that it will be powered by an Exynos 7422 chipset and will come with the S Pen housed in a tube-like home at the bottom right of the phablet. The S Pen will come with an auto eject feature that will come handy if you frequently use S Pen specific functions.

Samsung: We’ll give you $200 or more for your old phone

Samsung is offering $200 or more towards the purchase of a Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge for consumers who trade in their qualifying smartphones.

Although, there is a catch. The phone has to be fully functional, branded for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, or US Cellular and has to be a Galaxy S 4 or 5 or an iPhone 5 or newer in order to get the $200 offer.

The promotion lasts until 11:59:59 PM ET August 11, 2015 and is only offered to citizens of the U.S., the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico who are 18 years or older.

You’ll need to buy one of the newest Galaxies by this time and upload your receipt to Samsung’s promotion website by August 18, 2015. There, you will find the instructions for the ‘Make the Six Switch’ promotion and the full terms of service, as well.

Of course, Samsung would give its deal to customers of its previous devices, namely the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5,  in order to keep them within their own ecosystem. While it appears the company only extended this to iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6+ users based on the taglines and fine print, it is taking in smartphones from other manufacturers, according to this page.

I went through the process and selected two phones, the 32GB LG G3 on Verizon and the HTC One M8 on Verizon, both of them in working condition. I was offered $85.00 and $93.56, respectively, less than half than what Samsung is offering for older, functioning Galaxies and working iPhones.

It would seem that the $200 offer only stands for old Galaxy S devices starting at the S4 and old iPhones starting with the 5 that are fully functional and branded for the popular carriers listed above.

Nevertheless, if you’ve been waiting for a deal on either S6 and are willing to trade in select, now’s a good chance to get a new Galaxy, especially if you have one of the main phones listed or a new device in general.
