Galaxy ‘O’ is a new series of smartphones being developed by Samsung
Samsung may have only launched the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ last week, but that doesn’t mean the Korean handset maker will slow down in its shotgun approach to developing new smartphones. It seems that Samsung is busy working on a new range of devices under the Galaxy O moniker.
According to SamMobile’s source, Samsung is believed to be working on two handsets with model numbers SM-G550 and the SM-G600 that will launch under the Galaxy O brand name. Other than the handsets possibly launching as Galaxy O5 (SM-G550) and the Galaxy O7 (SM_G600), not much is known about the Galaxy O series of handsets. We will have to wait for more leaks to find out if the Galaxy O series will be aimed at the premium or budget segment.
As for Samsung’s promise to trim its smartphone lineup, well, that would appear to have been tossed aside. With its Galaxy A, Galaxy E, Galaxy J, Galaxy Note, Galaxy S, Galaxy Y, and now the Galaxy O range of smartphones, it would seem that Samsung is aiming to fill every possible niche in the market.
What do you think? Does Samsung really need to develop another new range of smartphones? Should it rather concentrate on giving its latest devices such as the Note 5 a global launch instead of just to the US and China? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

[Infographic] Samsung highlights the Android M features it will bring to its devices
The Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ smartphones were announced last week to varying degrees of excitement, depending on if the device you want is launching in your region. Not everyone wants to upgrade to a new handset, though, which means that many Samsung fans are wondering what new features the eventual Android M firmware update will bring to eligible devices.
With that in mind, Samsung has published a neat infographic that details the Android M features it will eventually bring to current devices. Features such as granular app permissions, memory track, quick fingerprint access, Auto App backup and power saving are mentioned.

Android Authority this week – August 16, 2015

It’s been a wildly entertaining week in the world of Android. Google dropped the Alphabet bomb, prompting a flurry of speculation about the reasons behind this radical change. Samsung finally unveiled the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus, to mixed reactions. Details about Huawei’s next smartphones leaked out, while we gathered more info about LG’s upcoming Nexus. Qualcomm introduced new mid-level chips and detailed the high-end Snapdragon 820. Xiaomi introduced the Redmi 2 Prime and Redmi Note 2. And the OnePlus 2 went on sale (if you have an invite!)

And just like that, the Note 5 has arrived. Hopefully for Samsung, the market reception will be less frosty than the anticlimactic launch would suggest. Truth is, the Note series is no longer standing out in a market full of devices with large screens. Are the S Pen and the software tricks it enables enough to preserve the Note’s dominance? Over the next weeks, we’ll be putting the Note and the S6 Edge Plus through their paces to find out.
What about IFA, Samsung’s traditional stomping grounds? We’ve got a glimpse of the Gear S2 and we’re confident we’ll get to check it out in Berlin from September 1. Anything else? Is a new tablet coming? Overall, IFA may be a little interesting than usual this year – Sony, Huawei, and a few others will have product launches, but it just won’t be the same without a new Note.

Galaxy Note 5 is missing VR software
The Galaxy Note 5 was launched alongside the Galaxy S6 Edge+ at an event held in New York City this past Thursday. So far, the handset has received very mixed reviews. Although most are happy with what the Note 5 brings to the table, many are unsatisfied. As recently reported, the Note 5 won’t include many features that where found in its predecessor, the Note 4. Some of these include expandable storage, a removable battery and a missing IR blaster for controlling your TV or AV equipment. A new report on Reddit states the Note 5 also won’t come with VR support for last years headset.
Unfortunately for Samsung VR users, the Galaxy Note 5 won’t fit the VR headset designed for the Note 4. It looks like VR lovers will have to wait until the company releases a new headset designed for the newly released flagships. So far nothing has been leaked or teased on any upcoming VR equipment from Samsung, but don’t count it out. Samsung is scheduled to release its upcoming Gear S2 smartwatch at the IFA 2015 trade show in Berlin early this September and the company may just show us a sneak peak on what its plans our with Virtual Reality. Only time will tell.

Here’s Samsung’s first Note 5 commercial
The first official Samsung Note 5 commercial just went live on their YouTube channel giving you a marketing idea of where Samsung believe the Note 5 fits in the market.
Whilst I’m still pissed that the Note 5 isn’t coming to the UK anytime soon, it’s still nice to check out the new device in all its glory. The 30-second commercial focuses solely on the greatness and flexibility of the redesigned S-Pen, which includes navigating images, creating sketches, and sending text messages all with the stylus.

With Samsung’s new phones, the phablet is so mainstream it’s no longer a category
By Ross Rubin
It was only in 2010 that Samsung introduced the Galaxy S, the first in its incredibly popular series of flagship smartphones. It had a 4-inch display, which was large for its time. A year later, however, the phone was dwarfed by the then-mammoth 5.3-inch screen on the first Galaxy Note. By 2011 standards, the Note was so large, it implied that it was aimed at a customer the size of an NBA center. And it popularized a new term—phablet—that indicated it straddled the line between phone and tablet.
In the following years, both the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note screen sizes grew, which quickly begged a question. Given that there was some upper limit on the practical size of a smartphone, how would Samsung continue to differentiate between the two phone families as each came closer to that upper limit?

Samsung already had a plan. While consumers and most of the media focused on the size of the Galaxy Note series, for Samsung its differentiation was ultimately about the S-Pen, the digital stylus that comes with Note models, whose spacious displays are especially amenable to scribbling. (In 2013, spurred by the success of the Note, the company went even larger with a 6.3-inch screen on the Galaxy Mega series, but it hasn’t developed that line.)
As the size gap between the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Note narrowed, flagship phones with 5.2-inch and even 5.5-inch screens became more commonplace. LG’s excellent G4, for instance, boasts a 5.5-inch display. The HTC One M9, a minor evolution of its predecessor, has a 5-inch display. Following the growth plan that Samsung pioneered, Motorola has bumped its Moto X screen size over its three generations. It has grown from 4.7 inches to 5.2 inches to—with its recently announced Moto X Play—5.7 inches, in a body that is both shorter and narrower than that of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. Indeed, the clearest sign that mainstream phone customers were ready to have their palms stretched by a big screen was Apple’s entry into the category last fall.

The new Galaxy S6 Edge+ is clearly designed to one-up the screen size of the iPhone 6 Plus without saddling a big phone with an S-Pen. But according to Samsung, the key to big phone screen acceptance is a thin body. While the company touted the steadily rising sales of the Galaxy Note family when it introduced the right-sloping Galaxy Note 4 Edge, it now says that that handset represented an early version of its curved-display technology and that the phone, at 8.3mm compared to the Note5’s 7.6mm, was relatively thick.
With the release of the Galaxy 6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note5, which both boast a 5.7-inch display, the company that established the phablet category with the Note can expect to see it cannibalized by its pen-free sibling. Indeed, unless one has a particular desire for the S-Pen—which has improved both aesthetically and functionally compared to previous versions—it’s hard to make a case for the no-longer-bigger Note5.
The Galaxy S6 Edge+, which builds on the success of its 5.2-inch sibling, is thinner than the Note, with curved sides and software features designed to take advantage of them. That’s its main differentiator from the host of other flagship smartphones with roomy screens. The phablet has simply become the phone it always really was.
