T-Mobile skipping pre-orders for Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+, sales open Tuesday

Looking to get yourself a brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 5 or Galaxy S6 Edge+? You know these phones will be hot, and with the release coming up this Friday, August 21st, everyone is looking to sign up for those pre-orders before stocks run out.
But what if your carrier is not holding any pre-orders yet? Such was the case with T-Mobile, but the carrier decided to surprise us with an even better treat. Magenta is skipping pre-orders altogether and will go straight to direct sales.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere took it to Twitter to give us the good news. You can put your name to a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and/or a Galaxy S6 Edge+ starting tomorrow, August 18th. Sales start at 6 AM Pacific, so make sure you have your credit card ready!
We’re opening up #Note5 and #GalaxyS6Plus ordering starting Tuesday 6am PT – no pre-order needed. AND we’re going to start shipping ASAP!
— John Legere (@JohnLegere) August 17, 2015
As we had already heard, T-Mobile will be selling the Note 5 at $699.99 for the 32 GB version or $779.99 for the 64 GB one. Of course, you can get these on their respective installment plans. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ will cost $779.99 for the 32 GB version, or $859.99 for the 64 GB handset. And don’t forget you can also score a year of Netflix service if you get one of these smartphones from T-Mobile (read the details here)!

Legere goes on to mention that the devices will be “shipped ASAP”. We are not quite sure what that means, but it can be assumed you will at least have your phone by Friday… hopefully. Who is signing up?! If you still aren’t sure, you can learn more about these handsets by checking out our Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ hands-on posts.

You can now install the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 ROM on the Galaxy S6

It’s normal for Samsung Galaxy S6 users to feel a bit envious of the Galaxy Note 5 features. After all, these larger handsets come with no shortage of UI optimizations and extra capabilities. Thankfully, there’s nothing our beloved developer community can’t do. The guys at XDA Developers have found a way to port the Note 5 ROM to the Galaxy S6, making it possible to take advantage of all Note 5 features in the smaller flagship phone.
But why would anyone want to do this? Isn’t the software pretty much the same? Well, the UI is pretty similar in both handsets, but let’s keep in mind the Note 5 is larger and newer, hence it comes with improved features and adaptations. In this case, Galaxy Note 5 users will enjoy SideSync 4.0, improved camera controls and UI optimizations. In addition, XDA member arter97 (who is behind this port) has already found some improvements in memory management and performance, as the Note 5 software carries more bug fixes and performance improvements.

Feeling adventurous? You can join the action by testing this port on your own Samsung Galaxy S6, but you will need root. Just keep in mind tinkering with your device’s hardware and software can be a bit dangerous. There is always some risk of temporarily or permanently damaging your device. Not to mention the fact that doing this can void your warranty, and you will be left alone shall anything bad happen. Also, keep in mind this ROM is likely not to be 100% stable.
Now, if that disclaimer doesn’t scare you, let’s jump right into the instructions.
Downloads:
- Get the ROM from XDA DevDB or arter97.com
- Get the arter97 kernel
How to Install Note 5 ROM on Galaxy S6:
- Install ClockworkMod(or PhilZ) recovery
- Put ROM on your SD card
- Enter recovery
- Perform a full data wipe(except you’re running previous versions of back-to-n0t3)
- Flash ROM
- Flash custom kernel that supports Note 5 firmware (mandatory)
- Flash SuperSU (optional)
How many of you guys are doing this? Hit the comments to tell us how your experience went! And if you have any questions or doubts, you can always refer to the main forum post on XDA Developers.

Samsung’s new SmartThings home automation Hub ships next month
Samsung quickly announced a second generation of SmartThings home automation hardware after acquiring the tech for $200 million last year… and then just as quickly delayed their release in March. Fortunately, there’s good news: the new Hub and sensors are just about ready to go and the company says they will go on sale in September. While older hardware will still work, the new generation is supposed to be powerful enough to handle processing locally, instead of in the cloud, improving reliability even when your internet connection is out. More info is promised in the coming weeks, but interested customers can preorder the $99 Hub from SmartThings or on Amazon to be first in line.

Despite a smaller battery, the Note 5 has longer battery life than the Note 4
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Many of you rightly voiced concern when it was officially announced that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 was going to have a 3,000mAh battery, down 220mAh from its predecessor, the Note 4. With battery life in smartphones generally at a premium, this didn’t seem like a smart move, even if optimization improvements got Note 5 battery life on par with the Note 4’s, however, the story is actually much better than this. According to Phone Arena’s battery tests, the Note 5 has longer battery life than the Note 4, eclipsing its predecessor by over 30 mins.
All things considered, that’s great news for those prospective buyers who were worried about the battery life. Of course, the Note 5 still doesn’t hold a torch to battery beasts like the Galaxy S6 Active or the DROID Turbo, but they have an unfair advantage with much larger batteries (3,500mAh and 3,900mAh respectively). There’s also a second part to the good news: the battery tests also revealed that the charging time of the Note 5 is also superior to the Note 4’s able to charge up in 81 minutes as compared to 95 minutes for the Note 4.
All-in-all, it seems unlikely that Note 5 buyers will have to worry about battery life on their new device, and even if it’s not as great as they expected, it will charge back up in no time. What do you think about the fact the Note 5 has longer battery life than the Note 4? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Samsung tells us what to expect from Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Google has unveiled the latest dessert label for its mobile operating system, Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The final preview of the software has been posted and now all we have to do is wait for the official release, which should come along with the new Nexus device(s).
All manufacturers out there are getting ready to make their respective updates when the time comes. Those who want a little teaser can now turn to Samsung, which has gone through the efforts of making a neat infographic with all the main changes Android 6.0 Marshmallow will bring. Let’s check it out!

Of course, these are all features we have heard about before. Google didn’t fail to mention these additions during their Google IO announcement. But what Samsung mentions here are only the most exciting of the new changes in Android 6.0. There is much more to come and we have made sure to tell you all about it in out ‘Diving into Android M‘ article series. Give those posts a look if you would want to learn more.
You can be sure the update will come to the biggest smartphones Samsung has to offer, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+. We will also likely see Marshmallow more affordable Samsung smartphones which have been released recently. It’s only a matter of time before we find out all the details. We expect the new Nexus handsets to launch pretty soon, and an onslaught of Marshmallow update will follow.

The 17 best laptops you can buy today
Our last buyer’s guide update had a pretty solid list of laptops, so if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? We do have a couple of new additions to spice things up, however. We felt compelled to add the agile ASUS Chromebook Flip, which serves up a 360-degree rotatable touchscreen and killer battery life. For PC gaming, MSI’s power-packed GT80 Titan is definitely worth a look. It offers top-of-the-range graphics and processing options, along with a large display and full mechanical keyboard. There are plenty of great choices out there right now, so if you’re in the market for a laptop or thinking of an upgrade, it’s worth taking a spin through the gallery below. Feel free to swing by our complete buyer’s guide, too, for a rundown on some of the best gadgets across the board.

T-Mobile is forgoing pre-orders of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+
Forget about pre-ordering the Galaxy Note 5 or Galaxy S6 Edge+ from T-Mobile. Why? Because the carrier is forgoing pre-orders of either Samsung device in favor of shipping units right away. Upon accepting orders on August 18 at 9AM ET, T-Mobile will fulfill them and ship phones as soon as possible. Or you can just wait until August 21 to head into a T-Mobile retail store and leave with a shiny new device.

In Europe and want the Note 5? Sign this petition
As you’ve already heard, Samsung revealed yesterday two new phablet flagships for the year: the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+. And it turns out that the Note 5 is not expected to launch in Europe, according to the company.
We do not know why that is the case, as of yet. However, if you’re in the UK, you may be able to do something about it.
Clove Technology, a reseller partnered with Samsung and other OEMs, wants to bring the phone to the country. So they created a petition over on its blog for people to sign.
What kind of impact this will have is uncertain, but it is better than not doing anything at all. Samsung must have a number of reasons why the Note 5 won’t be sold in Europe, mainly in relation to profit. If it sees there is actual interest for the product, the company could change its mind. Supply and demand, essentially. And if this works in the UK, it could create a movement across the continent.
Do you want to know more about Samsung’s new phablets? Then check out our coverage of the Note 5 and the S6 Edge+, and stay tuned.
