Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ officially launch in the US today

samsung galaxy note 5 color comparison (19 of 22)

While a few carriers such as T-Mobile and Verizon got the jump on Note 5 and Edge+ sales by skipping pre-orders and starting early, for a number of carriers today is the official launch day for Samsung’s latest flagship devices.

The Note 5 sees a dramatic departure from the Note series of the past. Not only does the latest Note follow suit with the Galaxy S6’s decision to drop microSD and removable battery support, the Note 5 is also the first member of the series that doesn’t significantly upgrade the design, processor, or some other major component when compared to the Galaxy S series. In short, the Note 5 is basically a blown up Galaxy S6 with S-Pen stylus support. Whether that’s a positive or a negative comes down largely to personal preference.

As for the Galaxy S6 Edge+? The only real difference between it and the standard Galaxy S6 Edge is the extra inches of screen space and a few new software features, though many of those software enhancements are actually starting to roll out to the original Edge as well.

Both handsets might borrow a lot from the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, but they are still very attractive, very powerful, and certainly worthy of your consideration. If you plan on picking up the Note 5, here’s just a few places that have it on offer, to help get you started:

GameFly brings game streaming to Samsung smart TVs

Is it still soon for video game streaming services? Maybe. OnLive is gone and PlayStation Now has had a rocky launch, making GameFly’s entrance all the more surprising. After launching on Amazon’s Fire TV, the game rental company is bringing its new “GameFly Streaming” service to Samsung smart TVs in the US, Canada and eight new European markets. It means that with nothing but a controller and a stellar internet connection, you can turn on your TV and play some “AAA” console games. GameFly is pitching it as a “Netflix of Games,” but the pricing model isn’t quite that simple. Instead of a single fee, you’ll have to choose one of its monthly bundles that come with a small smattering of pre-selected titles. The other problem is that, like many of its rivals, the games on offer aren’t particularly fresh. To name but a few, there’s Sleeping Dogs, Dirt 3 and Batman: Arkham Origins — all good games, but nothing that’ll be vying for Game of the Year 2015.

Huge 18 inch tablet in the works from Samsung?

samsungtablet

A new report indicates Samsung has a new tablet device codenamed Tahoe that is in the works that will be equipped with an 18.4-inch HD display. Unlike 2014 when Samsung made it a point to work on the tablet market, they have quietly been working on new models in 2015 like the Galaxy Tab E, the Galaxy Tab A, and the Galaxy Tab S2. This new super-sized tablet could join the ranks in Samsung’s portfolio this year.

The Tahoe tablet appears to have the model number SM-T670 and will have a TFT LCD screen running at a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Helping keep things running will be an Exynos 7580 processor running at 1.6 GHz, 2GB of RAM, and at least 32GB of internal storage. Available information indicates Samsung is equipping the tablet with an 8MP rear camera, which should not be used in the middle of a crowd, and 2.1MP front-facing camera.

No information has leaked about a potential release date, a final model name or pricing. Let us know in the comments if you would be interested in a tablet with such a large screen.

Samsung offering free 30-day trial of Galaxy S6 Edge, Edge+ and Note 5 to iPhone owners

samsung_unpacked_2015_galaxy_s6_edge_plus_colors_official_TA

In what can be considered a great customer poaching ploy, Samsung is now offering a free trial of its Galaxy S6 Edge range as well as the Galaxy Note 5 to iPhone owners for a month. Yeah, you heard it right – if you happen to be a not so proud iPhone owner, you can consider this 30-day Samsung-promoted test drive to see whether you are ready to switch to Android or not.

For as little as a dollar, you can choose either the Galaxy S6 Edge, the S6 Edge+ or the Galaxy Note 5, which will come with an activated sim card and a help guide. Although you are not obligated to buy the device after the trial period gets over, if you choose to do so, Samsung is promising an even more tempting offer for you.

“Your test drive kit will come with the phone of your choice, an activated sim card, and a step-by-step guide to help you start your test drive. After 30 days, if you buy a qualifying Samsung device, there’s even more love in store for you,” the promotion reads.

If you decide to participate in “Samsung’s Ultimate Test Drive,” make sure to return the handset within a month, because if you fail to return it after a grace period of five days, the Korean company will put a bill of $820 on your card. It goes without saying that you should try not to damage your phone, otherwise you may have to pay $100 or more depending on the damage. The offer is only available for the residents of the Unites States currently.

This promotion drive can be seen as a step to improve the profit margin of the company, whose financial health is anything but optimum going by its last quarter’s earnings. Samsung’s overall earnings fell by 8% year on year, while its mobility department suffered a decline of 37.6% from the past year.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Active may be released in November

samsung_unpacked_2015_galaxy_note_5_display_sample_image_TA

The latest tip to surface about the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 involves an Active version of the smartphone that among other changes, will come with a beefier 4,100 mAh battery. Although the new Galaxy Note 5 comes with a 3,000 mAh battery that has been found to provide plenty of usage thanks to Samsung’s optimizations, there has been some criticism about why Samsung did not bump up the size. Packing in a 4,100 mAh in this new version of the stylus-equipped smartphone might help address some of those concerns.

Along with a larger battery, the Galaxy Note 5 Active will come with IP68 certification for water resistance. Sources have not indicated whether Samsung will do anything to help prevent the glass screen from shattering when the device is dropped or otherwise improving durability. However, some additional resistance to damage would be consistent with Samsung’s recent move to release an Active version of the Galaxy S6.

Sources indicate the Galaxy Note 5 Active is slated to be released the week of November 8th, although it is not clear what pricing, markets, or carrier availability may be like.

Samsung Rumored to One-Up Apple’s ‘iPad Pro’ With 18.4-Inch Android Tablet

Samsung may be working on an “iPad Pro” style tablet of its own, with a new report from SamMobile suggesting the company is currently in development for the tablet, codenamed “Tahoe,” on an Android 5.1 Lollipop-based operating system and with an 18.4-inch screen. Samsung would target the tablet to enterprise and educational environments, with a lesser focus on day-to-day personal usage than the company’s current line-up of Galaxy tablets.

nabi_tablet_20 The kid-centered nabi Big Tab 20-inch tablet
The rumored tablet — with the model number SM-T670 — will feature a TFT LCD screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The Lollipop system will be powered by an octa-core 64-bit 1.6GHz Exynos 7580 processor, include 2GB RAM along with 32GB internal storage, with the option to expand thanks to a microSD card slot that supports up to 128GB cards. According to SamMobile, the tablet will also measure 451.8 mm wide by 275.8 mm tall and be 11.9 mm thick.

Apple is rumored to be developing its own larger-screened tablet, the so-called iPad Pro, which is believed to include a 12.9-inch screen. If Samsung’s 18.4-inch “Tahoe” device does become available, it’d be one of the biggest tablet on the market, with a screen that’s about 10-inches tall by 17-inches wide, far larger than most standard laptops.

Amazon’s Echo will soon control SmartThings devices

Just in time for the release of SmartThings new home automation hub next month, it looks like the Samsung-owned smart home platform is getting Amazon Echo integration soon, according to a (now unpublished) blog post. Echo can already control other smart home platforms with your voice, like WeMo and Wink, so it was only a matter of time until SmartThings got its due. It’ll let you do things like control SmartThings lights or power plugs simply by shouting commands to the Echo. While it had a bit of a rocky start, we’re big fans of Echo now, which handles voice recognition much better than Siri or Google Now. While its unclear when the integration will officially launch, SmartThings noted that Echo will work with its older hub, as well as the upcoming one.

Samsung wants to poach iPhone users by offering the Samsung Ultimate Test Drive

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

As is the case most years in the modern smartphone era, Samsung is locked in a battle with Apple for supremacy – one thing is for sure, neither is willing to give an inch. To this end, Samsung has started a campaign called the Samsung Ultimate Test Drive which specifically targets iPhone users. Samsung’s offer allows an iPhone user to pay a dollar to “test drive” a recent Samsung device for 30 days – it would appear that the brand new Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ are available to test, as well as the slightly older, smaller S6 Edge as well. A “test drive” kit will include the phone, a SIM card, and a guide on how to get the whole thing started – unfortunately, this is available in the US only.

If at the end of the 30 days the iPhone user wishes to buy the Samsung device they were testing, Samsung says “there’s even more love in store for you” – we’re not exactly sure what that means, but we’re willing to believe it’s good. Now if you’re wondering if you can get in on this to score a Samsung device for 30 days, the website that hosts the Samsung Ultimate Test Drive only accepts iPhones when clicking the “Start Test Drive” button – if you aren’t on an iPhone, you’ll be politely greeted by the following message: “Due to the design of the program, we request that you enroll from your iPhone device to receive your Test Drive phone”. Bugger.

samsung galaxy note 5 first look aa (27 of 41)

In typical fashion, Samsung has released its Experience apps for its latest smartphones. The apps offer users a walk through a number of new features included with the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ smartphones.

The applications offer a good view of the smartphones’ designs, with a rotatable 3D model included in a variety of color options. The Experience apps also walk you through a selection of Samsung’s own apps included with the phones, such as its Edge UX features for the S6 Edge+’s curved display or the S Pen options available with the Note 5. There’s also a brief look to be had at the phones’ fast charging technology and various accessories.

If you are unsure about whether to stump up the cash for one of Samsung’s latest smartphones, this is probably a good place to start. Be sure to check out our own hands-on time and impressions too.
