Samsung announces SLEEPsense, a device to monitor sleep and control home appliances
We have sleep monitors that we wear around our wrist, forehead or chest. They have the ability to measure our quality of sleep and generate reports for us when we awaken.
Samsung on the other hand, has the SLEEPsense sleep sensor they just announced at IFA. It is a small and flat sensor you place under your mattress to track sleep, movement and sleep patterns.
Where the SLEEPsense goes one step further is having the ability to control other devices around the home through the “Internet of Things(IoT).” As a refresher, the IoT are objects like air conditioners, refrigerators, and other physical devices that are connected to a network and can be controlled through sensors and commands.
This is super cool because not only can SLEEPsense monitor your sleep, but it can help you stay asleep by turning on your air conditioner if it decides the house is too hot for optimal sleeping conditions. It can also turn off your TV if it senses that you have dozed off so that the noise and light doesn’t wake you up later in the night. Now if it could get your neighbor’s dog to shut up I bet everyone would buy one. Nonetheless, controlling your devices around the home to help you stay asleep is quite an accomplishment.
The Samsung SLEEPsense has also been approved by the FDA for tracking vital signs and they have built in heart rate monitoring and breathing rates. I could see scenarios where this would be great for monitoring babies for SIDS or people with diseases such as emphysema, or sleep apnea.
According to Sammyhub the SLEEPsense will be released to South Korea first with other countries to follow. I would the US would be on the list since it was approved by the FDA.

Report: Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 will launch in India on September 7th

It would seem that all the fervor over last week’s discovery of an Indian-based test ROM was not a flash in the pan. According to SamMobile, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will be launching in India on September 7th. Precise details are currently unknown as far as price and availability goes, but the report claims that a launch event will be held in New Delhi.
Samsung’s decision to release the Note 5 in another market is both a surprise, and perhaps a preface for what (might) come to pass: Many had assumed that the latest in the S-Pen equipped phablet line would see a very limited release for 2015, a sad fact that includes the denial of sale to all of Europe, at least officially: customers can import the international device at a higher cost.
While it’s unlikely Samsung will have a sudden change of heart and sell the Note 5 in Europe this year, the addition of another territory for sale is definitely a step in the right direction.

The Galaxy Note 5 is the latest installment in the venerable Note series, that which essentially created the entire phablet genre. It packs a 5.7-inch sAMOLED QHD (2560×1440) display, an Exynos 7420 SoC (4x 2.1GHz Cortex-A57, 4x 1.5GHz Cortex-A53), Mali-T760 MP8 for graphics, 4GB of RAM, and storage options of either 32GB or 64GB. Also included is a 16MP rear, 5MP front camera assortment, 3000mAh battery, Category 6 LTE support, a fingerprint sensor and both Qi & PMA wireless charging support.

If you need a refresher, the Galaxy Tab S2 features a 9.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 2048 x 1536 resolution, an Exynos 5433 octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of on-board storage and microSD expansion up to 128GB. It also sports a big 5870mAh battery, an 8MP rear-facing camera, a 2.1MP front-facer and runs Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Samsung’s Milk Music adding college football and basketball
Samsung smartphone and tablet owners who enjoy major college sports will probably like a new addition coming to the free Milk Music app they get on their devices. Starting this Thursday, September 3rd, Samsung is adding a new genre for sports that initially will offer college football and men’s college basketball live streams.
For the upcoming football season, Samsung Milk Music will carry over 900 games, including some conference championship games, that will span 122 universities. The list of participating universities has not been announced, but that is a fairly sizeable number and should cover most of the major schools and conferences. When the college basketball season tips off, Milk Music will carry over 3,000 games from 137 schools.
In the future, Milk Music plans to add both home and away team feeds as audio choices for different games. Milk Music also plans to add sports talk content via the CBS Radio National Sports Talk line-up. Samsung makes no mention of games being subject to blackout restrictions.
You can read the full press release below and if you are a college football fan with Milk Music, check out the app later this week to see what games are available to listen to.

Samsung to launch curated news app for its Galaxy phones

European digital publisher Axel Springer and Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung have announced a new strategic partnership that will see the two companies develop new digital media services for European customers. The first product to come out of this partnership is a news aggregation platform designed for Samsung customers.
The news aggregation service will be known as UPDAY, which will be making its debut in Germany and Poland in just a couple of day’s time, ahead of a roll out to other European markets next year. The service will feature ‘Need to Know’ information selected by a local market editorial team and ‘Want to Know’ information which will be generated automatically by an algorithm that is tailored to customers’ individual interests. It is not clearly exactly how much control Axel Springer will be exerting over the content delivered to users.
There don’t appear to be any plans to release the app on anything other than Galaxy handsets, so UPDAY will be an exclusive application for Samsung customers.
The early beta version of UPDAY will arrive on the Google Play Store and at Samsung’s GALAXY Apps service on Thursday September 3rd for users living in the supported countries.
Samsung’s creating its own curated news app for Galaxy devices
Apple isn’t the only one developing an exclusive news service for its mobile customers. Samsung has announced a partnership with Axel Springer, a publisher of European newspapers including Die Welt, Bild and Fakt, to develop a news platform called “UPDAY.” It’ll be exclusive to Samsung Galaxy devices, and a beta version is set to land in the Google Play store this Thursday. What isn’t clear, however, is how much content, if any, Axel Springer will be producing exclusively for the service. UPDAY is being pitched as an “aggregated news content platform,” with stories selected both algorithmically and by a local team of news editors. Initially, the app will be restricted to Galaxy device owners in Germany and Poland — the countries where Axel Springer is dominant — before rolling out to “other European markets” early next year. If it’s successful, or Samsung thinks it has potential, there’s every chance it’ll be launched further afield in the future.
