Reminder: Samsung’s Gear S2 smartwatch launches today
Samsung announced its Gear S2 smartwatch at IFA awhile back, and we’ve been waiting in much anticipation ever since. Today is the day the device officially launches, and those interested, with a compatible smartphone, should be able to pick it up at most major retailers in the United States, Germany, Singapore, and South Korea.
Those in the United States should be able to buy the Gear S2 from Amazon.com, Samsung.com, Best Buy, Macy’s, and others for $299. The Gear S2 classic will set consumers back an additional $50 at $349 for the Gear S2 Classic. Some may want to hold off buying one in hopes of carrier availability being added soon.
As a quick refresh, the Gear S2 sport a 1.2-inch circular 360 x 360 (302ppi) display, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, and a battery said to last up to 3 days. In addition to being available in Dark Gray and Silver, some premium bands from Italian designer Alessandro Mendin should be available soon.
Anyone plan on picking one up today?

Galaxy S7 will feature Snapdragon 820 in US and China, Exynos elsewhere: Korean report

Qualcomm has reportedly secured SoC orders for certain versions of the Galaxy S7, coming in “early 2016.”
The report comes from Electronics Times, a trusted Korean publication, via Reuters. Citing anonymous industry sources, Electronic Times reports that Samsung is once again going to use a mix of Qualcomm and Exynos SoCs for its flagship phone.
In the US and China, the world’s two largest markets, the Galaxy S7 will reportedly be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 SoC. In other markets, including in Europe and Asia, Samsung will use its own Exynos processor.
The report cites industry sources speculating that Qualcomm was able to secure Snapdragon 820 orders for the two most profitable markets by using its chip manufacturing orders as a negotiation argument. Put simply, Samsung gets lucrative chip foundry contracts from Qualcomm, and Qualcomm gets chip orders from Samsung.

Samsung and Qualcomm refused to comment the report, but the Korean giant stated that its “business and semiconductor business are totally separated, [so] supply agreement of AP and foundry business do not affect each other.”
Samsung famously snubbed Qualcomm for its flagships this year, opting for its own Exynos 7420 chip. The loss of a big client – and the Snapdragon 810 overheating PR disaster that followed – left Qualcomm bruised out. Samsung, on the other hand, avoided the overheating problems that plagued HTC, LG, or Sony, and bagged more profit thanks to the use of its own silicon.
According to older reports, Samsung may use an Exynos 8890 processor on the Galaxy S7 (and presumably S7 Edge) units sold outside of US and China.
As for the Galaxy S7 release date, rumor has it, Samsung may have something to show us in early February. Following the early release of the Galaxy Note 5, a faster release of the S7 does make a lot of sense.
Benchmark tips specs for 18-inch Samsung Galaxy View tablet
Do you remember that mysterious Samsung tablet that leaked a few weeks ago? Well, we got some juicy details about it today. Looks like Samsung created a whale of a tablet, and we’re not yet sure who the market audience will be.
The latest leak was courtesy of GFXBench, listing several specs for the Samsung SM-T670 (assumed to be marketed as the Galaxy View). The star of the show is the monstrous 18.5″ screen size.
The other specs are a mixed bag. There seems to be a beefy processor – octa-core Exynos 7580 (bumped up from the 7420 in the current Galaxy phone) with Mali-T720 GPU, but only 2GB of RAM. The 1080P panel means that this tablet won’t be a pixel-density champ.
We’re also looking at 32GB of on-board storage (no word on microSD expansion), 2MP front camera (strangely, the specs for the rear camera didn’t come through), and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
Samsung could be targeting more productive uses for a huge tablet, such as in a classroom or office. Hopefully, because I don’t think I could live through seeing a tourist taking pictures with it on my next trip.

Samsung Galaxy View tablet appears on GFXBench with 18.5-inch display
Samsung teased the Galaxy View during its IFA 2015 presentation, but we’ve heard very little about it since. Now, the tablet is showing up on the benchmarking service GFXBench, sporting some impressive specs.
The Galaxy View (SM-T670) will feature a massive 18.5-inch 1920 x 1080 display, a 64-bit Octa-core Exynos 7580 processor, a Mali-T720 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 2-megapixel front camera, and will feature a rather large 5,700mAh battery, but it still seems small for how large the screen is.ta
Samsung’s new tablet is expected to size in at 451.8mm wide, 275.8mm tall, and 11.9mm thick. The rear camera is listed as not supported, but it should come with a 8MP rear sensor anyway, along with microSD support.
We’re hoping to hear more about this tablet very soon.

Samsung’s Galaxy View looks to be a myopic mid-range offering
Tablets. Perhaps as a direct result of the industry’s supposed slump, Apple and Google have taken to pushing productivity with their new entries. Whereas the Pixel C is but 10.2 inches however, the iPad Pro is a towering 12.9, a numeric ball-park Samsung is all too familiar with given the Galaxy Tab PRO 12.2 and Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 devices it released in 2014. Samsung also has teased an even more enormous upcoming product, the Galaxy View. For better or worse, the device looks to be a mid-range offering at best, at least according to GFXBench results:

Suffice to say the specs above – if legitimate – are a far cry from not only the new Galaxy Tab S2, but even last year’s Galaxy PRO series. The display, arguably the most important part of the tablet experience, is a positively grand 18.5 inches. The resolution however is listed at Full HD (1920 X 1080). This would give the Galaxy View a pixel density score of…124.73ppi. For reference, the Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 has a pixel density of about 247ppi, the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 and iPad Pro have a pixel density of 264ppi, and even the low-end Galaxy Tab E has roughly 157ppi.
While nothing is mentioned about the screen itself, it would not be the least bit surprising to find it either an LCD panel or else a TFT offering. If the benchmarks are indeed real, then the device is going to be quite far from the Super AMOLED-packing, high pixel product that one might readily envision with a name like “View”.

The remaining specs are of equally mid-range nature including an Exynos 7580 SoC and just 2GB of RAM. It will apparently have 32GB of on-board storage, a 2-megapixel front camera (as well as an 8-megapixel rear camera despite the benchmark noting it missing), a 5,700 mAh battery, and microSD support along with Android 5.1.1. The Galaxy View is expected to come in at 451.8 mm wide, 275.8 mm tall, and 11.9 mm thick.
The device already passed two certification inspections, thus Samsung may be prepping it for immediate launch.
If the benchmark specs are any indication, the giant Galaxy View will have ironically very little on the NotePRO 12.2 (pictured).
It will be interesting to see just where the View fits into the whole Galaxy product line. Given the large size it will inevitably be seen as a device meant to stay at home, but with the specs being reported above, it certainly doesn’t seem like the best option for a heavy gaming or media experience. With the lack of a “PRO” branding, the product is arguably going for a very different market altogether.
What are your thoughts on the device? Could Samsung have a real competitor on its hands here, or – again assuming these specs are legitimate – has it essentially killed the View before anyone got a peek?

Samsung’s Gear S2 smartwatch goes on sale October 2 for $299

Confirming earlier rumors about the device’s availability, Samsung has just announced that its Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic smartwatches will be available for purchase Friday, October 2nd in the United States. OnePlus proposes an idea to Samsung
Carl Pei the current CEO of Chinese manufacturer OnePlus, has sent a polite letter to Samsung asking for an internship.
In the letter from OnePlus to Samsung, Carl Pei discusses how he wants to improve the company. His issue has to do with manufacturing and believes with the help of Samsung, he can turn the company around and benefit each other. As most of you know, OnePlus is experiencing difficulty producing enough handsets to reach the high amount of demand. Carl Pei says it’s mostly due to production problems and shipping delays. The company believes Samsung can help and wants to send Pei to Samsung in return of letting an executive from Samsung attend their company’s headquarters. Carl Pei goes on to congratulate Samsung for all the hard work the company has done, in addition to the success it has achieved over the years. Pei strongly “admires their operations” and believes no one company can dominate a category and that there is still space for competition in the market as well as room to learn from each other.
It sounds like the real deal and OnePlus believes the two can better the lives of consumers if they work together. Perhaps the company wants help marketing its rumored upcoming OnePlus X handset. What do you think? Will this ever happen?

Samsung’s Gear S2 smartwatch arrives in the US October 2nd
After a number of teases, Samsung finally revealed its Tizen-driven Gear S2 smartwatch earlier this month at IFA. If you’ve been champing at the bit to purchase one, you’ll soon have the chance to do so. The wearable goes on sale this Friday, October 2nd in the US. When it does, you can expect to nab one from Amazon, Best Buy and Macy’s in addition to Samsung’s own online store. If you’re in need of a refresher, there’s two models to choose from, the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 Classic, which are priced at $300 and $350, respectively. The difference? The Classic sports a classier look in a smaller size with a black leather strap and a bit more detail around that rotating bezel. If you’re willing to hold out for the 3G version, it’s set to arrive “later this fall” on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.
