Being involved in the industry that we currently occupy, its easy to forget the backdrop that is the foundation of MWC and that is Barcelona. It was also my first time here which is probably slightly odd considering London isn’t too far but I must say that the city is vibrant, full of great architecture and people but more importantly, a general attitude which would be appreciated in any city.
I don’t want to keep all of you too long but over the past week I’ve been working on something I want to show you all. It’s some highlights of MWC, but not just limited to technology. It’s more than that – it’s the great people, great moments and the great AA team which we’re all fortunate to have. They all worked incredibly hard, sacrificing a number of hours not normally seen elsewhere. I hope you all like it.
Be sure to check out the other great content from MWC 2015, including our excellent podcast that we recorded on scene in Barcelona. You can also see AA’s top picks of MWC here. Thank you all for the warm welcome and I’ll see you soon!

Galaxy S6 teardown reveals a battery that’s almost impossible to replace

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is a cutting edge piece of mobile technology, so who can resist wanting to take a peek inside at the hardware and at how it’s all put together? MyFixGuide has taken the flagship apart, revealing a wonderfully put together smartphone, but this design comes at the expense of easy repairs.
Immediately, the new metal and glass build is a little trickier to work with than the old plastic back covers, especially if you want to avoid damage upon opening. It took 2-3 minutes of warming up the smartphone with a heat gun before the back panel could be removed. There’s then a middle frame, held in by screws, with the NFC circuitry placed on top.
Inside, the nifty Exynos 7420 SoC is neatly arranged on a slim form motherboard, accompanied by the RAM and flash memory, and SIM slots. The flip-side of the same board houses the NFC, heart rate sensor and infra-red sensors chips. The headphone jack, speaker and cameras are all connected via by familiar leads. The battery takes up the bulk of the interior space and it doesn’t look like Samsung could have squeeze much more than a 2,550mAh component into this form factor.
Interestingly, some had claimed that the Galaxy S6 still features a removable battery, despite Samsung glancing over the point during its announcement. While not technically wrong, the battery is secured in such a way that makes it virtually inaccessible to the vast majority of users. Even after removing the cover, the middle frame, NFC wiring and motherboard must also all be unscrewed before gaining access to the battery connection. This certainly isn’t as user friendly as simply taking off the cover and swapping batteries in and out.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 is clearly very well put together, but the transition to new build materials has necessitated a compromise on some of the old feature favourites, namely the lack of a microSD card slot and a battery that, for all intents and purposes, is locked in place.
Burton, Swarovski, Montblanc, and others are making premium Galaxy S6 accessories

Samsung has a long history of collaborating with luxury brands for accessories and even limited editions of its devices. The most recent example is Montblanc, which introduced ultra expensive styluses and covers for the Galaxy Note 4.
For the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge, Samsung is really emphasizing design and how the S6 is “uniting the worlds of fashion and technology.” So it should come as no surprise that Samsung is doubling down on partnerships with fashion brands, including Burton, Swarovski, Montblanc, and Rebecca Minkoff, as well as artist Romero Britto.
Snowboarding gear specialist Burton is creating “vibrant protective covers inspired by two of the brands most popular print designs.”

Swarovski has collaborated with Samsung before; unsurprisingly, the company is launching a “colorful series of premium, protective, crystal-embellished covers that reflects the different shades of glass in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.”

Montblanc is offering “leather made cases and flip covers designed in the Montblanc manufacture in Italy.” While Rebeca Minkoff’s contribution is “a playful and subtly edgy flower print protective cover and leather pouch”

Finally, Romero Britto is behind the “unique, clear covers” you can see below.

Samsung says these accessories will be available from its store come the release date of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge on April 11. Joining these premium products in the store will be a slew of more reasonably priced accessories for the two devices, ranging from battery packs to a multitude of covers.

What would make people switch from iPhone to Galaxy S6? A lower price, apparently
There’s a lot that Android enthusiasts don’t like about the new Samsung Galaxy S6 – its lack of microSD slot immediately springs to mind as well as its lack of removeable battery. The list is exhaustive, as it usually is, but in the bigger picture where Samsung is doing battle with Apple for top dog […]

You’ll soon be able to order a $2500 gold-plated Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

We’ve seen companies apply gold plating to smartphones in the past, but one company that stands out above the rest is Goldgenie. The company has applied its gold and platinum plating to devices like the HTC One M7, M8, Apple iPhone 6 and even a number of different BlackBerry devices. Next up on Goldgenie’s list is the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.
Samsung’s two newest devices, announced at MWC a few weeks ago, feature aluminum edges and shiny backplates made out of glass. Both devices are already being offered in Gold Platinum (among other colors), but if you’d prefer something a tad more luxurious, Goldgenie is offering up each device in 24K Gold, Rose Gold, or Platinum finishes. The company says your new smartphone will be at your doorstep around 14 to 21 days after the device’s April 10th global launch date.

Pre-orders will be held through Goldgenie from March 20th until April 7th, and each device will run you a hefty £1,664 (~$2,453 US). Also, don’t expect your new investment to be shipped to your doorstep in its original box. Goldgenie will present the device to you in its own luxury cherry oak display case.
One thing to note: if you’re seriously thinking about purchasing one of these, you should know that Goldgenie plates each device in metal. We’re not sure how the metal plating will affect wireless charging on the device, but we’re sure folks who spend $2,500 on a gold-plated smartphone aren’t buying it for the features.

AT&T to offer last year’s Galaxy S5 Mini for this year’s pretty penny
Behold! The Galaxy S5 mini of yesteryear is back.
Truth be told, we civilians can’t be too sure what conversations take place in heated board room discussions at large companies. Perhaps after one such debate, AT&T has arrived at the decision that what people want now is not the Samsung Galaxy S6 or the Galaxy S6 Edge. No, what they really want is a mid-range mini from last year, at a price tag that’s pretty peculiar.
Announced today is the Galaxy S5 mini, a device released seemingly everywhere else last summer. AT&T will begin to sell it on March 20th. It is only available in black, and comes with a 4.5-inch SAMOLED HD (720 X 1080) display, a 1.4GHz Quad-core CPU, 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, and an 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera. MicroSD support and Android 4.4.4 are also included.
The phone does feature the same waterproof design as present in its’ big brother, the Galaxy S5, however does away with the gasket used to seal the USB. Also carried over from the S5 is the fingerprint sensor and biometric reader making the mini an impressive piece of tech despite its relatively poor internal hardware.
Given the rather mediocre nature of this product, you might be forgiven in assuming the cost is $0 on-contract. You would be wrong. The AT&T Galaxy S5 mini will cost $99.99 with a 2-year agreement, or a staggering $428.99 off-contract. The device is also available on the AT&T Next plan for $0 up-front and monthly payments of $14.30 (Next 24), $17.99 (Next 18) or $21.48 (AT&T 12).
G-Thang: The Moto G (2014 Edition) offers a bigger screen and dual-facing front firing speakers at almost half the off-contract price as AT&T’s new phone.
The question of why AT&T has decided to release this product now is up for speculation. Samsung’s Galaxy S5 was widely considered to be a flop and thus logically it would make sense for carriers to try and forget about the product line and focus on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which may release as early as the second week of April. For the uninformed, this product is going to create product confusion given the timing, and may suggest the S5 mini is in fact, a new product.
On the other hand, it’s possible AT&T has done market research to suggest a segment of its consumers are not interested in the Galaxy S6 pair due to their screen size, and thus without an S6 mini to offer, the S5 variant will have to do. Still, given the fact that the Moto G (2014 Edition) can be had for almost half of this product’s off-contract price and comes with a larger screen, the pricing decisions don’t seem to add-up.
DALLAS, March 16, 2015 – AT&T2 announced that it will carry the Samsung Galaxy S® 5 mini in its retail stores and on www.att.com starting March 20. AT&T currently offers the largest selection of Samsung devices.
