Galaxy S6 Edge Battery Life – First 24 hours

One of the biggest concerns with Samsung’s new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge seems to be the battery life as the 2600 mAh battery is non removable unlike past Samsung flagship devices. There’s been reports that the battery life is one of the key downsides to Samsung’s new handsets – but are these accurate? In Lanh’s review of the Galaxy S6 Edge, he said the battery life was average but I want to see if this is still the case with my different usage habits.

To try and find this out, I’m kicking off a new series today focusing on the Galaxy S6 Edge battery life – I received my S6 Edge on Friday and I’ll be publishing my experiences with the battery life after day 1 (this post), day 4 (in a few days), day 7 (next week) and then finally after two weeks where I’ll also publish my impressions of Samsung’s new flagship.
It’s worth noting that the screenshots below were captured a few hours before the battery drained fully but the battery stats are fully accurate.
Let’s take a look at the Galaxy S6 Edge battery after it’s first full charge:
- Total battery life: 14 hours 11 minutes
- Screen On Time: 3 hours 07 minutes
- Full brightness: 1 hour 59 minutes
- Screen battery used: 25 percent
- Video streaming: 1 hour 11 minutes
- Gaming: 36 minutes
- Phone Calls: 28 minutes
- Top 3 Battery App Usage:
- Screen: 25 percent
- Facebook: 15 percent
- Twitter: 11 percent
Testing battery life can be subjective as each person’s usage will vary widely but to try and provide some context to these battery tests, I copied all my data and apps from my Galaxy Note 4 (running Lollipop). Whereas the Galaxy S6 Edge lasted just over 14 hours, my Galaxy Note 4 would usually last 18 to 22 hours with largely the same apps and services running.
The first thing you will notice about the Galaxy S6 Edge battery is that the first ten percent seems to drain very quickly. After this initial short burst, the battery begins to level off and settle down. It’s a strange occurrence that many people have reported but it’s possible this is due to the handset being new – after a few days usage, will it still drain the first ten percent?
What does 15 hour battery life really mean? Essentially it means that the Galaxy S6 Edge should last an entire working day (say 7am to 7pm) with moderate to heavy usage but this is based on the first day. It’s widely known that battery life does suffer over time so I’m interested to see how this changes over the next two weeks!

The Samsung Galaxy S6 has landed, bringing with it a much needed injection of premium materials. Trading in its typical plastic design language, the latest Galaxy S family member features an aluminum frame sandwiched between a glass front and back.
Aesthetics are a major upgrade for the Galaxy S6, but that’s far from all that’s on offer. The phone also has a cutting-edge Exynos 7420 processor inside with 3GB RAM, and stunning 5.1-inch QHD display and a solid 16MP camera with OIS technology.
Recent Nexus 9 giveaway winner – Trevor!
Samsung doesn’t stop there, the Galaxy S6 also sees a somewhat scaled back Touchwiz with a new theming app and considerably less Samsung apps installed by default.
Bottom-line, the Galaxy S6 takes all of what we love about the S series and catapults both the design language and software forward, making this easily the most exciting Galaxy S to date.

You can find the UAG Ash case for $34.95 on UAG’s site. It’s a little pricier than the other cases on this list, but we’re sure the added protection will make up for that. Head to the link below if you’re interested.
If you’re not a fan of third party cases, Samsung has a good number of official cases, chargers and audio accessories available on its site. Samsung’s big day is here. Following a weak 2014 and deep inroads from competitors, Samsung is poised for a better year, and it all starts with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.
Going on sale today in 20 countries, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are probably the hottest Android devices in a long while. Here’s a bird’s eye view of the most important things you should know before and after buying Samsung’s shiny new toys.

2. The competitors
There are some really good Android alternatives out there: the One M9 is coming out just today, the Note 4 remains a great option for power users, and the G4 is just around the corner.

3. How is it better than the iPhone?
You’ll hear this question a lot, especially if you live in the US. So here’s what you should know.

4. Availability
The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are available from all major carriers and retailers, with prices starting at north of $650 unlocked, and an extra $100 for the Edge version. For the top tier 128GB models, the unlocked price can reach close to $1000. Of course, you can opt for two-year contracts or monthly installments, which will make the cost much more manageable.
5. Colors
The Galaxy S6 is available in black, white, gold, and blue. The Galaxy S6 Edge is black, white, gold, and green. However, both exclusive color options (blue and green) will only be made available at a later date. Plus, depending on where you get your device from, you may be offered only some of these colors.

6. Storage
There is no microSD card slot on the Galaxy S6. That means you should really pay attention to which storage option you get. Options are 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB, but you’ll pay a hefty premium for the upper tier.
7. Battery
The battery is not removable on either the S6 or the S6 Edge. But even if capacity is smaller than on the S5, battery life is about the same.
8. Wireless charging
If you have a wireless charger laying around, it’s very likely you’ll be able to use it with the Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge out of the box. That’s because the devices support the two biggest standards, no special accessory required.

9. No waterproofing
The Galaxy S5 was water resistant, but the Galaxy S6 and its curved sibling aren’t. While modern smartphones are can typically handle a little water, you don’t want to risk your warranty. If you absolute must have water resistance, there’s talk about a Galaxy S6 Active, coming later this year.
10. Edge tips and tricks
If you opt for the Edge, you’ll definitely want to know what you can do with that eye-catching curve.

11. Is the Edge fragile?
Put simply, it’s not as fragile as it looks, like this slam test and this drop test show.
12. S6 Edge availability
The Samsung CEO stated that, due to manufacturing issues, there will be a limited supply of S6 Edge units in the beginning. In other words, if you want an S6 Edge soon, you should probably try to buy it as soon as possible.

13. Freebies
T-Mobile offers a free year of Netflix, while Best Buy throws in a free wireless charger. There are other retailers that try to sweeten the deal as well, so keep an eye on your options. Regardless of the retailer, Samsung offers 100GB of free Microsoft cloud storage for each purpose.

14. Samsung Pay
Samsung made a big deal of its new Pay service. The bad news is it will only launch in the US and South Korea this summer, so unless you are willing to wait it out, Samsung Pay should not be a reason to buy the new S6 and S6 Edge.

15. Improved fingerprint sensor
Even if the Galaxy S5 fingerprint disappointed you, you may want to try it on the Galaxy S6, as it’s much easier to use now.

Getting a Galaxy S6 today? You won’t need Kies to transfer your data

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge don’t work with Kies, Samsung’s well known phone management software, according to a report from Sam Mobile.
Instead of Kies, which Samsung users have known for years as the PC application required for data transfers and software updates, Samsung is now offering a set of utilities called Smart Switch.
Available for PCs and Macs, Samsung Smart Switch offers roughly the same functions as Kies, in a more user friendly package. You will need to plug in your old device and then the new Galaxy S6 via USB cable to your PC, and the software will automatically sync contacts, call history, preferences, and more. You can also back up and restore your device, sync contact data, and check for software updates manually.
Smart Switch Mobile, available through the Play Store or through Galaxy Apps, lets you transfer your data even easier. Just install it on both devices, and on the old device tap Start and then Connect, and choose the content you want to carry over. You can pick from contacts, music, photos, calendar, text messages, device settings and more.
Smart Switch Mobile and its PC equivalent have been around for a while, but they are still worth mentioning for people who are used to Kies (or even not syncing their devices at all).
The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are shipping starting today in 20 countries from around the world. For more on the devices, check out our reviews (S6 and S6 Edge) and stay tuned for more.
