Blacksmith-Labs Bruno Belt Clip Holster for Samsung Galaxy S5 Review: Leather just raised the Bar
I’m not much of a leather guy. I’m not much of a belt clip holster type of guy either. However, all that changed when I saw the Blacksmith-Labs Bruno Belt Clip Holster. Blacksmith-Labs is a company born from a Kickstarter and still appears to be going strong. Their philosophy is “based on the concept of modern minimalist, focusing on the fundamentals of the design without unnecessary elements” and you’ll definitely get a sense of that once we take a close look at the holster. The case we’re looking at today is for the Samsung Galaxy S5, but Blacksmith-Labs also has the case available for Nexus 5, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and Samsung Galaxy S4.
What’s in the box
Opening the box of the Bruno holster, you immediately get the sense you’re about to experience something unlike most other phone accessories. The box is lined with velvet, which you unfold to reveal the Bruno holster.
Blacksmith-Labs calls the Bruno Collection the “ultimate expression of our design philosophy”. The body of the holster is created from a single piece of leather and hand-stitched where required. As you might expect from a holster/pouch accessory, where the phone is always completely shielded, there isn’t anything extra included in the box besides the holster itself; no screen protector, no screen cleaner. As you can probably tell, even just from the photos, the Bruno holster is absolutely made from real leather, which gives it both a very distinct look and distinct smell.
On the rear of the holder, there is a 360-degree rotatable belt clip, which you can use to hook the holster onto yourself. We have the Gunmetal Grey variant of the belt clip here, but you can also choose to have the clip in Brushed Gold. Speaking of finishes, the Bruno holster that we have here is the Chestnut Brown, but you can also get it in Black, Burgundy, Blue, Dark Cognac and Natural Leather. The holster we have here will set you back $79.95 USD, while some of the other leather finishes, depending on the leather used, will cost up to $119.95 USD.
How does it perform
The function of the Bruno holster is as simple as you would expect; after you insert your Galaxy S5, you secure it inside the pouch by pulling down a leather strap and fixing it to the metal stud that adorns the front of the holster. It’s not the most secure mechanism you have ever seen, but it does do the job. For everything else that isn’t your phone, there is also a front pocket which can hold a whole number of things as it is quite wide including your credit and business cards, cash or even a charging cable.
The fit of the pouch is actually pretty loose so you can stick your fingers right into it to to fish your Galaxy S5 out. As for whether you can fit in your Galaxy S5 and a case: you might be able to get away with a very thin case, but anything thicker won’t cut it. But not to worry as Blacksmith-Labs also offers a version of the holster specifically for a Galaxy S5 and case (this appears to only be available for the Galaxy S5 so far) which will give you that extra leeway to fit in your device with protection.
While the Bruno holster is handcrafted, the workmanship is of a very high standard. I initially had concerns about how strong the stitching was, particularly the stitching around the belt clip, but it looks to be of good quality and should last quite a while (assuming you don’t start getting into extreme sports). And the great thing about a handcrafted accessory is that you know that it is unique, which is pretty special. As you might expect from a full body pouch, the Bruno holster is reasonably protective, and if you’ve chosen to get a holster made of real leather, chances are it’s going to be enough for your purposes.
You might be questioning the use of a stud to keep down the only strap that is keeping your Galaxy S5 from jumping out of the holster, but it employs a very simple locking system where you just pull the strap further down and the stud gets locked in a smaller notch that will keep the strap from coming loose. Simplicity is the key after all.
What I like about the Blacksmith-Labs Bruno Belt Clip Holster
There’s definitely something refreshing about seeing a case made from leather and made so elegantly. Sure, it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but if it is, you’re unlikely to be unhappy. I’m a big fan of how simple it is and how it looks so unassuming, which really highlights Blacksmith-Labs’ mantra of “less is more”.
Leather pouch aside, I really like the construction of the belt clip. It’s meaty, touch and goes well with the overall theme of the Bruno holster. Furthermore, I really like how Blacksmith-Labs have secured the belt clip, making sure that it won’t fall out, even after time and stretching of the leather.
What I don’t like about the Blacksmith-Labs Bruno Belt Clip Holster
I never like saying that price is something I don’t like about a product, particularly when I think it is worth it, and in this case, I do. However, the prices of the Bruno holsters (either $79.95 or $119.95), particularly the higher grade leather ones, are expensive, so unless this is definitely something you have been looking for, it’s not likely to be your first choice. Having said that, this is what real leather costs, which fans of the material will definitely associate with.
Final Thoughts
The Blacksmith-Labs Bruno Belt Clip Holster for Samsung Galaxy S5 is a testament to simplicity and function. It uses leather to great effect, which is a welcome contrast given the world of compounds and plastics we live in. If you’ve been looking for a leather holster, or something elegant to store your Galaxy S5 in, the Blacksmith-Labs Bruno Belt Clip Holster is definitely one accessory you should consider.

Verizon and T-Mobile Galaxy S5 get new OTA Updates
If you happen to own a Samsung Galaxy S5 on either Verizon or T-Mobile, then be on the look out for an update that being pushed out to your device. Each update is a little different in terms of what it will bring to your device.
On the T-Mobile side of things you can expect to be moved to baseband version G900TUVU1BNG3 and carries a file size of 38.6MBs. The update turns on T-Mobile VoLTE service to the flagship device which allows for phone calls to be made over LTE data services. Your location and coverage will have an impact on how well, or if, it works at all. The update is rolling out now and be picked up as a OTA or through Samsung Kies.
As for Verizon’s version of the device there are quite a few additional things you might notice. The software Version moves to KOT49H.G900VVRU1ANE9 and it will bring along updates to the Caller Name ID, Message+ and Cloud apps from Verizon. There is also a fairly substantial list of bug fixes as well.
We don’t see a file size mentioned on the Verizon support page for the device, but we imagine it will be fairly large. You will want to make sure you are over 50% on your battery life and have a Wi-Fi connection available to download either update.

Samsung Galaxy S5 GPE still missing, but making the rumor mills Again
Back in April a keen eye caught an image issue on the device section of the Google Play Store for the Samsung Galaxy S4 GPE device. The image had been updated, or inadvertently changed, to depict an image of the Samsung Galaxy S5. It stayed that way for a while before the situation was sorted out. One month later in May the S5 GPE was spotted clearing through the Bluetooth SIG process. Just a few weeks ago nearly every GPE device in the Play Store went by the wayside as “out of inventory.” Leaving only the HTC One M8 and the Nexus devices available for order. It would seem that a new round of Google Play Edition should be on the way, especially a Galaxy S5 variant.
Per the usual, @evleaks has shared and confirmed that one is coming still. However, no one knows when. It is interesting to note that the image shows both hardware and software buttons at the bottom. The previous Galaxy S4 GPE offered just the hardware buttons. It could be just a crappy image manipulation with a stock screen placed on a Galaxy S5 body, but with the other information like the image swap on the Play Store (which had both hardware and software keys) and the Bluetooth SIG certification, we are pretty confident that a Galaxy S5 does exist. We have to wonder if Samsung will be offering both hardware and software key options similar to the OnePlus One. Although, this is Samsung we are talking about, so they could just be screwing things up all together.
What are your thought? Regardless of the image, would a Galaxy S5 GPE appeal to your wallet at all?

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini to hit shelves mid-July, source says

Just few weeks ago, we showed you a bunch of leaked pictures of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini, courtesy of SAMMobile. Now thanks to one of their sources, they are reporting that Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini will go up for sale in markets worldwide in mid-July.
Obviously nothing is set on stone right now but last year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S4 Mini in mid-July as well. However, about the specs of the Galaxy S5 Mini, we know that it will feature a 4.5-inch 720p display, a 1.4GHz Samsung Exynos 3 Quad (Exynos 3470) , 1.5GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, and LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, IR Blaster, NFC, and GPS. Galaxy S5 Mini will feature Android 4.4.2 KitKat with Samsung’s latest TouchWiz UX, and despite being the ‘Mini’ version of the Galaxy S5, it will come with all the software goodies such as Ultra Power Saving Mode, Private Mode, and Kids Mode.
Are you looking forward to Samsung’s new addition to the Galaxy family?

Samsung Galaxy S5 gets a prime update for Korea

Samsung on Wednesday announced a new version of its Galaxy S5 flagship phone, unwrapping the Galaxy S5 LTE-A. Once known by the name of Galaxy S5 Prime, it’s the first smartphone to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 processor which boasts four 2.5GHz Krait 450 CPU cores as well as the Adreno 420 GPU. What’s more, this is also the first device of its kind to offer theoretical download speeds of 225Mbps.
Other specifications boosted in the Galaxy S5 LTE-A include a WQHD (2560×1440) Super AMOLED display and 3GB RAM. Internal storage is listed at 32GB with an option for microSD expansion (up to 128GB), however, much of the other hardware remains unchanged.
If all of this sounds great and has you hoping to pick up the new device you’ll want to temper that enthusiasm. Samsung has, for now, opted to keep this one exclusive to its Korean home market. It is expected that the phone will be offered as soon as June 19 in a variety of colors: Charcoal Black, Shimmer White, Electric Blue, Copper Gold, Sweet Pink, and Glam Red. Reportedly, the price will be 940,500 won (approximately $919 US).

Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A gets announced with Quad HD display and Snapdragon 805
There has been a lot of noise lately being made about the Samsung Galaxy F, or Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime as it’s also known as. This device is supposed to build on the original Galaxy S5 with a bigger screen and a faster processor. Well, Samsung has today announced something like that, but it’s not quite what we expected. The Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A was announced today, and like the Galaxy S4 LTE-A that was released last year, looks like the original Galaxy device it’s based off with slightly better hardware specs and the ability to harness the speeds of LTE-Advanced networks.
Perhaps surprisingly, the Galaxy S5 LTE-A features a 5.1-inch Quad HD display giving it a pixel count of a whopping 577 ppi. Better still, the device is the first to benefit from the all new Snapdragon 805 which sprints along at 2.5GHz and houses the new Adreno 420 GPU. The remainder of the specs remain the same, and will be available in Charcoal Black, Shimmer White, Electric Blue, Copper Gold, Sweet Pink and Glam Red. Unfortunately, also like the Galaxy S4 LTE-A, the S5 iteration is also going to be an exclusive to South Korea, and will cost 940,500 won (or about $920 USD) when it goes on sale June 19th.
While some have already dismissed rumours of the Galaxy S5 Prime or Galaxy F in the light of the Galaxy S5 LTE-A’s release, something doesn’t quite add up, in particular the fact multiple rumours have specified a larger screen (5.2-inch) and a different back cover. While this might just all end up in the pit of dead rumours, I’m not quite willing to admit that this is all Samsung has in store till the Note 4. What do you think about the Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A? Do you think this is the Galaxy F/Galaxy S5 Prime that we’ve been hearing about? Let us know your opinion in the comments.

Easily root your AT&T or Verizon Galaxy S5 with Geohot’s towelroot

If you’ve been waiting for a way to root your AT&T or Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5, the wait is over. Today developer George Hotz, aka Geohot, released a solution that’s as easy as sideloading an APK and clicking “make it ra1n.”
The towelroot APK is said to work with the not only the AT&T and Verizon GS5, but also the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, LG Nexus 5 and every phone with a kernel build date before June 3, 2014. It was noted in the XDA thread that the AT&T and Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3 may have some issues though.
Geohot said that some known bugs are that if the /proc/version on the Note 3 includes 3.4.0-722276, it doesn’t seem to work, the su binaries don’t seem to update, but this may not be the root’s fault. Also, Motorola and HTC devices don’t currently work because /system is write protected.
To install towelroot, head over to towelroot.com and click the lambda to download the APK and before you install, although everyone should know this, make sure you click to allow apps from Unknown Sources. After that, all you need to do is click the root button.
If you’re wondering if this will trip the Knox security system, this will more than likely void your warranty, but you already knew that, right? Geohot said that when he ran the root method, his device said “KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0×0.”
One last thing, if you come across any bugs, be sure to report them. Geohot plans to release a new version later today that will hopefully squash them.
Enjoy the freedom of your newly rooted device!

UPDATE: The Note 3 with kernel 3.4.0-722276 is fixed, so if you had downloaded it before, please redownload.Current known bugs include the Note 3 with kernel 3.4.0-257432 not working, but updating to 722276 should fix it. The newest Motorola and HTC devices still don’t currently work because /system is write protected.
