Samsung Galaxy S5 sales were between 30% and 100% higher than Galaxy S4 on launch Day

Samsung Galaxy S5 salesIf Samsung was worried about the popularity of its new flagship device, those concerns have been quelled emphatically. Reports from ZDNet have reported that Samsung Galaxy S5 sales on launch day were up on average by 30% over its predecessor, the Galaxy S4, and that in some countries, the sales increase was closer to 100%. In fact, the above photo was taken in France on launch day there, with scores of people lining up in anticipation of purchasing the phone. There’s definitely some irony in the appearance of lines; Samsung is well known for disparaging Apple for the appearance of lines when they launch new devices.

Many of you will remember that the Galaxy S4 sold 10 million handsets in its first month on the market; it looks like the Galaxy S5 is on track to smash that record and while Samsung probably isn’t worried about the demand for its new smartphone, they will likely be worried about the supply which took several significant hits in the weeks before the Galaxy S5′s release, including a contracted factory catching fire and the assembly of its ISOCELL camera not progressing as quickly as they hoped. Whatever happens in the ensuing weeks, the Galaxy S5′s launch day performance sure makes it seem like Samsung still has a stranglehold on the Android market for the foreseeable future.

Have you got a Samsung Galaxy S5? What are your thoughts on it so far? Let us know what you think in the comments.

“Oh, it’s on!”: Samsung sends John Legere a gold Samsung Galaxy S5 of its Own

gold Samsung Galaxy S5Shots have now been fired. Earlier today, we reported that HTC America had sent T-Mobile CEO, John Legere, a HTC One M8 with a 24 carat gold finish as a gift, a photo of which he happily posted on his Twitter account. Not content to be beaten out by HTC, Samsung Mobile US has gifted to Legere a gold Samsung Galaxy S5 of their own, hand delivered by Samsung executive, Travis Warren. You can see it in the picture above, which is a selfie that could possibly have been taken with the gold HTC One M8. Ironic, no?

In the tweet with the gold Samsung Galaxy S5, Legere doesn’t mention that the device has a 24 carat gold finish as he did with the One M8, so it’s entirely likely that this is just a publicity stunt by Samsung to make sure it doesn’t look like HTC beat them at something. That said, it does look very gold, and who wouldn’t want to be choosing between two of the newest and best Android smartphones on the market which also happen to be gold. Man, do I want to be John Legere…

What do you think about Samsung’s response to HTC’s gold HTC One M8? Let us know what your opinion is in the comments.

New Urban Armor Gear cases are now available for Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8

New Urban Armor Gear casesWe’re huge fans of Urban Armor Gear here at AndroidSPIN; quite a few of us have rocked a case from the accessory manufacturer at some point and been completely satisfied with the case’s quality and protective credentials. Well, there are now new Urban Armor Gear cases available now for the two newest smartphones to the Android family, the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8, which adopt Urban Armor Gear’s trademark military look and protective protrusions. The cases will be available in 5 colours for both the Galaxy S5 and One M8 versions and will cost you $34.95 USD a pop. Oh, and by the way, there is free worldwide shipping.

As a previous owner of an Urban Armor Gear case, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 version (which we reviewed here) to be precise, my favourite thing about the case is that it doesn’t compromise on protection but still looks good and doesn’t obstruct the device’s functionality. Case in point for the HTC One M8 version is the way the dual cameras are housed; some cases on the market make the dual cameras look like a dog’s breakfast, and don’t look to provide too much protection. That could just be subjective preference, but there’s no doubting Urban Armor Gear’s commitment to making sure all their cases meet military drop-test standards.

Either way, if you’re interested in picking up an Urban Armor Gear case for your brand-new Galaxy S5 or One M8, make sure you hit the links below:

In some parts of the world, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is now Available

Samsung Galaxy S5 is now AvailableIn some parts of the world, like here in Australia, the 11th of April has already dawned, meaning that the Samsung Galaxy S5 is now available in those regions. For those still waiting, you’re likely only one sleep away from not needing to line up (a la iPhone 5S) to buy your brand-spanking-new Galaxy S5, and likely join the millions of other consumers that will be doing the same thing.

The Galaxy S5 has been getting some very mixed press around the internet; despite being lauded for its technical innovations like having the “best performing smartphone display” and having some pretty interesting battery technology, the Galaxy S5 is still seen as a relatively “pedestrian” flagship smartphone. Pedestrian or not, the Galaxy S5 will still possess cutting edge specifications including the Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 2GB RAM, and a 5.1-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display (check out the full specs here).

The real question, of course, is whether you are going to purchase one or not, so do let us know down in the comments if you have gotten your hands on one or if you are a planning to get one when the 11th of April dawns where you live.

Watch a Galaxy S5 Get the Hammer in New Video [MUST-SEE]

galaxy s5-hammer

You got to love it: when new devices get released, those dreaded durability test videos start showing up making us cringe and hate the people who make them. Drop tests, water resistance tests, even tests with knives, have been shown in recent videos for the latest in mobile tech. How about a hammer to a Galaxy S5?

In the video below, a young man decides he is going to show us just how durable the Galaxy S5′s screen is. It is a fairly short video, and he basically gives it a little force at first, and then ends it be beating the phone into pieces. What happens after that is pretty hilarious, and we can all laugh in an enjoyment, because this guy deserves what happens after destroying a new piece technology. So check it out below, and let us know what you think. GET SOME FEBREZE OR SOMETHING!
