samsung_note2_720

We have seen the Samsung Galaxy S5 and its amazing results, and surely it is the best Galaxy device to date. But as the new flagship is here, its time for the rumors to start floating about the next flagship smartphone. SamMobile is reporting that Samsung is working on a premium version of the Galaxy S5, which will feature an octa-core Exynos 5430 processor and QHD (2560×1440) display. It is codenamed as “Samsung KQ”, and also the device will feature Intel-crafted LTE modules as well.

Galaxy S5 is an excellent device, but it was not what we heard about it in rumors. But it seems that the Samsung KQ will be a dream device for every Samsung fan. Right now, we don’t know when Samsung is going to release it, but you can expect it to be a Summer vacation surprise by the Korean giant, or maybe in Fall 2014.

Do you think a ‘premium’ S5 is a good idea? Let us know in the comment box below.

[VIDEO] UI Performance test between the Nexus 5 and Samsung Galaxy S5 shows stock Android still wins Out

UI Performance test between the Nexus 5 and Samsung Galaxy S5The Samsung Galaxy S5 is one the first Android devices on the market right now with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, boasted updated efficiencies over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 800. So which is faster? It’s obvious that the 801 is faster on paper, however there is not yet a device with the 801 that natively comes with stock Android. So to see if there are any potential differences in speed, YouTuber Chris Nacca has performed a UI Performance test between the Nexus 5 and Samsung Galaxy S5, the Nexus 5 with its SD800 and Galaxy S5 with its SD801, the results of which you can see in the following video:

As you can see, despite the SD801 having a slight performance advantage, the bloating effect that the TouchWiz has on the UI performance of the Galaxy S5 is quite significant. While there may have been improvements to TouchWiz this time around, it still pales in comparison to the Nexus 5 with its older, ‘inferior’ SD800. As Chris mentions, however, that’s not to say that the Nexus 5 is definitely the device to get; the Galaxy S5 is still a blisteringly fast device and is probably worth the pretty penny, but in a speed test of the supercars of Android royalty, the Galaxy S5 is the slower of the two devices.

What do you think of the UI Performance test between the Nexus 5 and Samsung Galaxy S5? Are you surprised by the results, and have the results changed your mind at all about either of the phones? Let us know what your thoughts are in the comments.

Hail Britannia: One third of trade-ins for the Samsung Galaxy S5 in Britain have been iPhone owners, report Says

trade-ins for the Samsung Galaxy S5I can’t say I’m surprised, but it’s always nice to see it in action. A report from The Telegraph in the motherland (Britain) has said that one third of trade-ins for the Samsung Galaxy S5 seen by website CompareMyMobile have been lodged by iPhone users. The most traded-in device in this period has been the iPhone 4S, followed by the Sasmsung Galaxy S3 in second place, and perhaps most surprisingly in third place is the iPhone 5S.

While you might be thinking that this is completely down to iPhone users just jumping ship to the Galaxy S5, that’s actually not the whole truth. Though the report stops short of saying it directly while talking about depreciating trade-in values, these trade-ins may have more to do with the fact that the iPhone does not depreciate in value as quickly as the Samsung Galaxy phones do. That said, whatever the actual reasons for people trading in for the Galaxy S5, people being converted to Android can probably be counted as a win regardless.

What do you think about this report? Do you think the Galaxy S5 should be as wildly popular as it is turning out to be? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Why I buy refurbished tech and you should too

refurbished pic

Hi, I’m Tarus, and I’m a “tech-aholic”.

I love mobile tech — phones, tablets, wearables. if it has to do with mobile, I’m all over it. The newest flagship phones are starting to be released, and I’m wide-eyed yet again, hoping to get my hands on the latest and greatest.

With new devices being released all the time, it can be exhausting and extremely expensive to keep up. We are getting to that time of year when it seems like there are new devices being released weekly and we just saw the HTC One (M8) and Samsung Galaxy S5 launch to great fanfare that are expensive on-contract , but off-contract, the prices are through the roof.

This leads me to the question I’ve been pondering: Why is there such a stigma around buying refurbished hardware? I frequent several forums and deal sites and when there is a post about a sale on a refurbished phone or tablet, there is usually a massive number of people making negative comments about the item. I read things like, “I thought this was a good deal until I saw that it was a refurb.” Comments like this really grind my gears.

I think that some people have had bad experiences with refurbished products and it left a sour taste in their mouth. They spew their negativity all over the Internet, and pretty soon, every refurbished product sale has a gang of angry villagers with torches and pitchforks in hand just waiting to vilify the perfectly acceptable products available for purchase.

When I’m in the market for my next Android device, I will check for refurbished deals first. I’ll scour deal sites like Slickdeals and Woot. I’ll look at AmazonWalmartCowboom, and Newegg.  Plus, I‘ll even take advantage of Ebay, utilizing reputable sellers to purchase refurbished products.

Personally, I’ve had a really good experience with buying refurbished products, and when purchasing items I need. There are a few reasons why I chose a refurb first, such as:

  • Items can usually be had for a fraction of the cost compared to buying brand new.
  • Items usually look brand new with little to no signs of use.
  • Most refurbished items are store demos, returns, overstocks, or cancelled orders.
  • The manufacturer warranty still applies in most cases.
  • You can purchase an extended warranty for piece of mind if you’d like.
  • Returns are offered on most items.

Now, I am not saying that your experience will be perfect, as I’ve even purchased a smashed, refurbished TV from a certain big box retailer, which I was able to return. Nevertheless, you should highly consider buying refurbished devices if you’re looking to save money and get a deal. Please don’t worry about what others say on the Internet because for every negative commenter, there are a hundred others smiling, kicking back and enjoying their “refurbs”.

[VIDEO] Samsung Galaxy S5 gets shot by a .50 calibre rifle in typical RatedRR Style

Samsung Galaxy S5 gets shotWhether you’re a fan of the Samsung Galaxy S5 or not, I think we can agree that it probably shouldn’t be maliciously destroyed. Okay, maybe some of you wouldn’t mind having a go at destroying one, and you’ll be the ones who will like this video. The YouTube channel, RatedRR, is well known for its almost artistic destruction of current and new technology and the latest device in the literal crosshairs is the Galaxy S5. Check out the video below where a Samsung Galaxy S5 gets shot with a .50 rifle:

There are very vehement groups in the Android community who either stand by the plastic construction of the Galaxy S5 or are strongly against it, and this is probably a score for the anti-plastic team (as impractical as this test actually is). Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy S5 is absolutely torn to shreds after getting hit on its top edge with nothing left after but a smouldering plastic frame.

RatedRR also performs some basic stress tests prior to the shooting including a drop test and a soak test. Curiously, they fail the Galaxy S5 despite the fact that the device has an IP67 rating, though it does appear that the back cover was removed while it was still wet, possibly exposing the inner hardware to the water. It’s definitely not the most scientific of tests, but there’s always something hypnotic about inanimate objects getting shot in slow motion. Still, I wished they’d just given the phone to use instead…

Let us know what you think about the video in the comments below.

Cringe: Extreme Samsung Galaxy S5 drop test shows it’s one tough Smartphone

Samsung Galaxy S5 drop testNobody likes watching a drop test video. Okay, that’s a lie; I do occasionally enjoy watching a phone get obliterated on pavement as I’m sure some of you do too. However, drop tests are normally conducted from waist-high and sometimes even head-high drops if you’re feeling a bit ambitious. Not in this video, which shows a Samsung Galaxy S5 drop test off a 2 storey building. I’ll let the video do the talking:

As the video mentions, the Galaxy S5 was actually subjected to some underwater tests prior to the drop test and was still functional after that. Of course, the result of the video is absolutely astounding considering that the Galaxy S5 is still fully functional with all its hardware working after a face-first impact from what is probably at least 10 metres. Despite what you may think about the plastic construction of the Galaxy S5, you can’t deny that the results of this video show that it is one tough smartphone. Now excuse me while I try and forget the sound of the phone hitting the concrete face-first…

What do you think about this video and the drop test performance of the Samsung Galaxy S5? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
