Roadmap of Android Marshmallow updates for Samsung devices has been leaked

Samsung has always been sheepish when it comes to revealing when their devices will get software updates, so the responsibility of informing the masses usually falls to leaked information, as it has this time. In a leaked Samsung document, the roadmap for Android Marshmallow updates for Samsung devices has been revealed, including at what state their approval (presumably with Google) is at. Predictably, Samsung’s latest devices like the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ will be the first to be updated with the cutoff for updates sitting around the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Alpha.

Android Marshmallow updates for Samsung devicesPerhaps excitingly for Samsung owners, the dates listed are quite soon with the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ updates due for rollout in December of this year. Of course, the speed of the rollout will depend no what region you are in and is further affected if your device has carrier software on it as well. The document also details a second phase of updates which will be coming to Samsung’s Galaxy A and Galaxy E range of mid-range devices, though the timetable for this is unclear, and presumably Samsung can still change these plans on a dime. A third phase is also referred to, but that seems even less likely.

Continuing on the trend of what I think I will call AT&T Lollipop week, we have two more devices getting the sweet treat. Just moments ago I alerted you guys the LG G2 seeing an update to Android 5.0, now I hear that the Galaxy S5 Active and, lower tiered, Galaxy Alpha are both seeing updates now as well. Unlike the smaller G2 update, which was 725MB’s, these updates are 1GB and 1.4Gb respectively. Guess which device gets the larger one?

The update brings in a lot of new UI enhancements for both devices along with a plethora of redesigned Samsung apps that are more inline with Google’s Material Design guidelines. The colors are bolder and sometimes brighter. You will also see the lockscreen notifications and Smart lock. It should be same update that the Galaxy S5 started to receive a week ago.

Like all other updates, they are rolling out in stages. You might be lucky and se it today, or you might not see it until the end of the month. At least you know it is out there legitimately though. Head to Settings > About device > Software Update > Check for Updates. If you see it is ready, then make sure you have well over 50% battery life, a solid Wi-Fi connection and some time to kill for it to download/install.

AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy S5 Active and Galaxy Alpha Lollipop update rolling out now

Samsung Galaxy S5 Active-26

Hot on the heels of the LG G2, AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy S5 Active and Galaxy Alpha are now beginning to receive the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The Galaxy S5 Active’s update comes in at a hefty 1.4GB download, and the Alpha’s at 1GB. AT&T requires you to download the updates over Wi-Fi, so make sure your phone is charged up and you’re connected to a speedy Wi-Fi network before you start the download.

Just like on most other Samsung devices, the Lollipop update will bring along with it many UI enhancements, but they won’t be very prominent thanks to Samsung’s Touchwiz overlay. Other changes you’ll find in the update include the switch to the Android Runtime (ART), priority mode notification settings, new battery saving features, Smart Lock, more fluid animations and much more.

The updates to both devices are rolling out now, but it may take a few days to make their way to your device. If you’d like to check manually, head to Settings>About device>Software updates>Check for updates. Once the update is downloaded and installed, your Galaxy S5 Active’s software version should now read LRX21T.G870AUCU1BOC5 and your Alpha’s software version will read LRX22G.G850AUCU1BOC6. Be sure to let us know in the comments when you start receiving the update!

Buy a Galaxy Note 4 or Alpha through AT&T Next, get $100 bill credit (today only!)

samsung galaxy note 4 first impressions (15 of 20)

Thinking about getting a Note 4 or Galaxy Alpha? Don’t mind the idea of signing up for AT&T service to get it? If your answer is yes on both accounts, you’ll be happy to know that AT&T is currently offering an $100 bill credit when you purchase either device through their AT&T Next program.

That means you won’t be signing a traditional contract, though you will need to commit to payments over the next 12, 18 or 24 months. What if you want the credit and then hope to cancel and bring over the device to another GSM-based carrier? Technically you can do that, though it is important to note that you’ll need to stay with AT&T for at least 3 bill cycles before the credit is received, after that you’d simply need to pay the remaining balance (minus the $100 credit) and you could move elsewhere.

For those that are at all tempted by this offer, the downside is that you need to act soon, as the promotion ends today! You’ll also need to complete the offer online, as the promotion doesn’t apply to brick and mortar locations.

What do you think, is this deal worth jumping on? Fore more details on what to expect from be sure to check out our reviews for the Galaxy Alpha and Note 4.

Deal: Samsung Galaxy Alpha on Ebay for $300, unlocked

Samsung Galaxy Alpha-28

When the Samsung Galaxy Alpha first debuted, it received relatively mixed reception. While some folks were appreciative of the fact that Samsung had finally brought a dose of metal to their phones in the form a metallic frame, others felt it wasn’t enough of a design change or that its specs simply weren’t as impressive as they’d hoped to see from Samsung’s first (semi) metallic phone.

As time has passed, Samsung has since brought a metal frame to the Galaxy Note 4 and even introduced a few low-to-mid-range offerings with unibody metal designs, but the Galaxy Alpha still remains a solid device that’s worthy of your consideration. This is doubly true due to the fact that it can currently be yours for just $299.99 with free shipping through “qualitycellz”, an Ebay seller with 59,712 feedbacks recorded and a positive rating of 99.1%. As you might have guessed, the phone is manufacturer refurbished, and so that may be a turn off for those that prefer never-opened handsets. For those that want a little extra protection for their investment, it is worth noting that the phone is eligible for a Squaretrade (3rd party) warranty.

The model for sale is the 32GB AT&T variant, though it is unlocked and ready to go for use outside of AT&T. Not sure if the Galaxy Alpha is right for you? Be sure to check out our full review for more details on specs and how well the device performs.

For more details, you’ll want to head on over to Ebay. Keep in mind that there is only a limited number of stock available, so we’d jump on this offer soon if you are at all interested.

Samsung to shelve Galaxy Alpha and move to lower-cost models, report says

galaxy_alpha-700

galaxy_alpha-700

Samsung will stop selling the Galaxy Alpha once current inventory is depleted, according to a recent ET News report. Allegedly, Samsung will discontinue the higher-priced, more premium experience, in favor of lower-cost alternatives such as the Galaxy A5. Whereas the Galaxy A5 features some of the same materials and design characteristics as the Alpha, its lower-tier specs bring about a cheaper sticker price. The A5 is expected to launch with a cost of around $365 US.

Samsung has yet to officially make any claims or confirm the reports.
