“OK OnePlus” Feature Stalled Cyanogenmod 12 Rollout
Ever the tease, last week OnePlus started a rollout of a stable version of Cyanogenmod 12, the Android 5.0 Lollipop-based custom ROM, to its venerated One phone. However, what OnePlus, giveth, OnePlus taketh away, and after a few members of the OnePlus One clique actually received the OTA update, the rest were stuck in upgrade limbo, wondering why OnePlus continues to play games with their fragile hearts.
It turns out the noncommittal antics weren’t just in everyone’s collective head, rather, OnePlus paused the CM 12 rollout in order to include the new “OK OnePlus” feature in the update. “Baby, I wasn’t ignoring you! I was just trying to find the perfect way to tell you how much I care,” they said.
And care OnePlus does. Carl Pei, co-founder of the rogue startup, tweeted today about the pause in the rollout. So at least he’s communicating with you even if it’s not in person or by phone.
OTA rollout was paused due to new “OK OnePlus” feature being added. Should resume mid week.
— Carl Pei (@getpeid) April 20, 2015
If “OK OnePlus” sounds eerily similar to “OK Google,” that’s because it’s basically the same thing, except it will even work when the phone is asleep, much like the programmable “OK _____” functions in Motorola phones.
The big bummer here is that it appears the eager suitor jumped the gun with its initial overtures of an OTA update and might actually force early adopters – the committed ones – to reinstall the update in order to access OK OnePlus. Way to play games with us, guys.
On a personal note, I’ve seen one OnePlus One in the wild thus far in the year or so that it’s existed, and that was as recently as this past Saturday. I know more exist, but I want proof. How many of you are sporting the OnePlus One and where are you at with the OTA update?
I’m still waiting for the CM 12 final release for a Nexus 5. Alas. OnePlus wins again. I know, I know. It’s not me. It’s you.

The OnePlus One is now available without an invite forever, 75% off accessories for 24 hours
It was just about one year ago to the day (actually 4/23) when the OnePlus was announced to the world. It has been a crazy ride for sure with interesting marketing promotions and such. Probably the craziest thing has been the invite system, but that is no more starting today. The OnePlus is now available globally every day of the week, and you don’t need an invite. This isn’t for a limited time either, it’s forever.
Now if you’re starting to get the idea that this no invite system will pass along to the OnePlus 2, think again. OnePlus just announced that the invite system will be back for it.
Now on top of this wonderful news, OnePlus is also taking 75% off OnePlus Flip covers and Premium Screen Protectors for 24 hours. Bamboo StyleSwap covers required an invite, but that has been eliminated for the sale as well (while supplies last). This sale is only available in USA/Canada, the European Union, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
I guess the big question is how they decided on this promotion, and that is revealed in the following video…

OnePlus no longer requires invites for One smartphone
It will return when the second-gen smartphone launches this fall
OnePlus on Monday announced that it will no longer require potential One buyers to have an invitation. Since launching roughly one year ago the $300 handset has been somewhat difficult to procure for customers. The invitation system has evolved and loosened over time, however, there’s never been a full-blown availability.
Running a modified version (Oxygen) of Android 4.4 KitKat, the One features a 5.5-inch display, 13-megapixel rear camera, and 5-megapixel front-facing shooter. The unlocked device is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor with 3GB RAM and includes at least 16GB of storage.
The second-gen OnePlus handset is expected in the third quarter of 2015.
“The OnePlus 2 will bring the challenges that come along with a brand new product, and initially, our invite system will help us to manage that risk. It also helps us to be sure that every OnePlus 2 user gets the amazing experience that they deserve. “
To celebrate the temporary goodbye of the invitations, OnePlus is offering a 75% discount on Flip Covers and Premium Screen Protectors. What’s more, Bamboo StyleSwap covers will also be available without an invite. The deals are valid in the following regions: USA/Canada, the European Union, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

OnePlus One says farewell to invites, but they will return for the OnePlus 2

The OnePlus One took the mobile world by storm one year ago, and now the world can finally buy it without restrictions.
To celebrate the anniversary of the One’s debut, OnePlus announced today that it’s finally retiring its notorious invite system. The OnePlus One is now freely available for sale in every market where the company operates.

OnePlus has had open sale events before and has taken to selling the One without an invite every Tuesday. But now the window is open permanently, as the startup thinks it’s mature enough to manage an open sales model.
In celebration, OnePlus is discounting its flip covers and screen protectors by 75 percent and opening up sales for the bamboo StyleSwap back covers without an invite, while supplies last.
If the system invite annoyed you, the bad news is OnePlus is not ready to put it behind for good. When the OnePlus 2 comes later this year, the device will be offered through the same invitation-only system:
“We’re committed to maintaining razor-thin margins in order to give as much value as possible back to our users, and this drastically increases our risk. The OnePlus 2 will bring the challenges that come along with a brand new product, and initially, our invite system will help us to manage that risk.”
Now the question is, how many people who wanted a OnePlus One still haven’t got one? When the One launched a year ago, the competition in the “affordable-flagship” niche was weaker than today, not to mention that the One has to face new devices, like the Zenfone 2, with its 4GB of RAM.
Thoughts?
Could it be the OnePlus Two? OnePlus will be making an announcement on April 20th

Almost exactly one year ago, Chinese startup manufacturer OnePlus launched its maiden smartphone, the OnePlus One, and since then has done a pretty good job of solidifying itself as a company that’s going to be sticking around for awhile longer. Naturally, since its been a year from the launch of its first phone we’re wondering when its successor, the OnePlus Two, is going to be announced. But if an invitation posted on OnePlus’ Google+ page is anything to go by, that announcement could be as early as April 20th.
The invite is accompanied by the statement “From here on out, anything could happen” – OnePlus’ marketing has alternated between much too obvious and extremely vague, so it’s a bit too hard to guess if there’s anything cryptic hidden in there. Our best bet is that it’s been a year since the OnePlus One’s announcement that it would be a logical time for the OnePlus Two to be announced. Thankfully, we’ll only have to wait a few days to find out whether what we’ve predicted is true.

OnePlus Two Expected In Q3 2015, Seeks Additional Funding From Silicon Valley
OnePlus, the maverick smartphone manufacturer that attempted to turn the world on its head, is in talks to obtain additional funding from Silicon Valley venture capitalists . The purpose: to increase and improve its manufacturing and talent. The company hopes to accomplish this before announcing the OnePlus Two. The company is already attempting to lure talent from the likes of Huawei, Xiaomi, and Lenovo.
It’s unknown how far in negotiations they are. However, the reputation of the company could be a factor in its efforts, given the public’s outcry concerning the OnePlus One. OnePlus is looking to change some of the negative press surrounding the actions the company has taken, like the highly controversial invite system along with manufacturing, and public relations issues. Nevertheless, the OnePlus One was a big hit with people who received the phone.
In the last year, OnePlus succeeded in sales of over one million units, mainly overseas and in countries like the United States, Britain, and India. The company estimates sales of three to five million units in 2015 and hopes to double that to 10 million phones in 2016, while utilizing invites and online sales.
““OnePlus also plans to increasingly focus on selling software and services to users of its phones”.“
The OnePlus Two is anticipated to be announced in Q3 of this year. The specifications of this handset are unknown as of this time. However, stay tuned as we inch closer to launch date.

OnePlus may not be a household brand quite yet, but the company is anticipating that its global smartphone sales will reach between 3 and 5 million units this year. Not bad for a small company with only a single product on the market right now. Bloomberg’s video report (above) contains some other interesting titbits about the growing Chinese manufacturer as well.
Interestingly, Canalys research suggests that combined Europe and North America sales make up the bulk of OnePlus’ revenue, unlike Chinese rivals such as Xiaomi. This suggests that the controversial invite system has worked out in the company’s favour, allowing it to keep tight control over stock and costs while still meeting foreign demand. East Asia accounts for a substantial 39 percent portion of its sales, while India, the company’s next target market with its own dedicated invite system, has already grabbed a 7 percent share.
Although costing substantially less, the OnePlus One rivalled the hardware of most flagships last year.
Speaking of growth, OnePlus is looking to Silicon Valley to help the company expand into new markets. Rather than seeking additional funding, co-founder Carl Pei says that the company is lean enough to turn a profit, OnePlus is looking for experienced senior staff to help push the company forward. OnePlus aims to become a platform host for software developers within the next five years, according to CEO Pete Lau. The newly developed Oxygen OS could be the starting point for this venture.
The report also reaffirms that two new OnePlus smartphones will be heading our way this year. The flagship OnePlus Two will arrive in the third quarter and another unspecified cheaper model will hit the market by the end of the year. Unfortunately, we don’t know much else about these upcoming phones, but they could be key if OnePlus is to push through the 3 million sales mark by the end of 2015.
Cyanogen 12 rolling out now to OnePlus One, link to OTA file available

After more than a few delays and a teaser earlier this week, Cyanogen has finally begun pushing out the update to the Lollipop-based Cyanogen 12 OS.
Cyanogen 12 (based on Android 5.0) will be rolling out to all OnePlus One devices, including devices sold in India, where there was some confusion due to the conflict between Cyanogen and OnePlus. The update will roll out to the Yu Yureka “very soon” according to a blog post on the Cyanogen blog. Yet to be available in stores, the Alcatel OneTouch Hero 2+ will ship with Cyanogen 11, with an update to C12 at a later stage.
Cyanogen 12 brings the Material Design cues and new features of Lollipop, as well as several original pieces of functionality, including the revamped theming feature and the new Boxer-based Email app. In terms of theming, the biggest addition is the possibility to theme individual apps with App Themer. The new Email app offers Boxer’s premium tier features, including Exchange support, multiple accounts, canned responses, and many customization options.
Cyanogen 12 will be landing as an OTA for all OnePlus One users over the coming hours and days. For the impatient, the OTA file is available here with more mirrors here, though you will need to be on the latest version of Cyanogen 11 (11S 05Q).

OnePlus OxygenOS is now officially available for the One smartphone after a long wait. OnePlus made the announcement on their blog that One users can download the OxygenOS ROM and flash it on the One manually. They also mentioned that they are working on an easier way to port the update to the One but for now, flashing is the only option.
Earlier this year, OnePlus announced the OxygenOS as they decided to move away from CyanogenMod. Later, they were joined by the team of developers behind Paranoid Android who helped them creating an amazing operating system. OxygenOS is based on Android 5.0.2, and it will bring some great features to the One. OnePlus says that they care more about performance and battery life, rather than stuffing the interface with bloatware. They also mentioned that they like to keep it ‘light and essential’.
