OnePlus 2 rumor roundup

oneplus-one-unboxing-25-of-29

It’s been more than a full year since the OnePlus One was announced, and it’s safe to say that many folks are interested in what the new Chinese smartphone manufacturer will release next. At the time of its unveiling, the One featured top of the line specifications, which did a great job of backing up OnePlus‘ slogan – “Never Settle.” Of course, that doesn’t mean the OnePlus One didn’t come without its caveats, though. Through a series of embarrassing marketing blunders and the not-so-popular invite system, many folks found it difficult to justify purchasing one of the handsets. Still that didn’t take away from the fact that the OnePlus One was one of the best smartphones released in 2014.

With only a few more weeks separating us from the OnePlus 2’s official unveiling, OnePlus has already begun slowly trickling out specifications that will be included in the next handset. Although we’re slowly getting a clearer picture of what the device will look like, there’s still quite a bit we don’t know. With that said, let’s jump right in and take a look at some of the most prominent rumors, as well as some of the confirmed details relating to the OnePlus 2.

Design

oneplus-one-styleswap-bamboo-cover-aa-11-of-14

OnePlus has yet to release anything official regarding the OnePlus 2’s materials, though rumors have been circulating for some time that the phone might come with an all-metal chassis. For starters, CEO Pete Lau teased on his Weibo account that this rumor may be true. Soon after that, we got our first early look at what’s purported to be the new handset, featuring none other than an all-metal design.

The leaked smartphone render didn’t really show us anything too out of the ordinary – a rear-facing camera, a volume rocker on the right-hand side, as well as a standard 3.5mm headphone jack up top. It should be noted that we can’t vouch for the validity of the image in any way, so this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt. To get a closer look at the supposed leaked render, be sure to head to our original coverage by following this link.

Display

oneplus-one-aa-24-of-34

The display is another aspect of the OnePlus 2 that we know little to nothing about, though there’s no harm in speculating based on current trends in the industry. For starters, there have been rumors floating around that the device could possibly employ a screen that measures approximately 5.5 to 5.7 inches diagonally. The OnePlus One carried a 5.5-inch display, which seemed to be the perfect size for many users who wanted a phablet, but didn’t want to go as big as a six-inch display. Increasing the screen size by .2 inches could put it up against the Galaxy Note line, though this slight increase could also turn some users away who value one-handed usability.

As for the resolution, we haven’t heard much on this front, either. The OnePlus One came with a Full HD (1920 x 1080) screen, so it would only be a natural progression for the OnePlus 2 to come with a Quad HD screen, like we’re seeing with more and more flagships nowadays. Of course, bumping the resolution up to Quad HD also means battery life will suffer, but keeping in mind OnePlus’ specification philosophy, we’d be surprised if the 2 didn’t come with a bump in resolution.

Hardware features and specifications

oneplus-one-unboxing-28-of-29

Since the One’s release back in April 2014, there have been a few notable trends in the industry that have been emerging in more and more smartphones. For starters, Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge both come with really great fingerprint scanners, and Google even announced that Android M will come with native fingerprint scanning support, making it easier for manufacturers to better implement fingerprint scanning tech into their smartphones. Because of this, OnePlus has announced that the 2 will come with a fingerprint scanner that’s supposedly “faster that Apple’s Touch ID.”

The company explains:

On the OnePlus 2, one quick tap takes you right to your homescreen. With the ability to store up to five fingerprint profiles, it’s fast, it’s safe, and it’s secure. Your smartphone is your most personal device, and its security should be personal, too.

oneplus-2-snapdragon-810

The company has also confirmed that the OnePlus 2 will come with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor. Despite many reports claiming that the original Snapdragon 810 runs too hot, OnePlus assures that this new CPU will run “cooler than ever.” This also means that the device will come with the perfectly capable Adreno 430 GPU, which is good news for the gamers out there.

Read more: Here’s what’s new with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 v2.1

Aside from the Snapdragon 810 v2.1, the company also says that the device will feature 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, which will bring faster loading times, smooth gameplay and a slew of energy saving features to the device. If you’d like to get a better understanding of what the term “LPDDR4″ means, our very own Rob Triggs explained it very clearly in his post LPDDR4 – everything you need to know.

Google recently announced at Google I/O 2015 that USB Type-C would be the standard for Android devices going forward. We already have a good feeling that the next Nexus device(s) will come with this new port, but OnePlus may actually beat Google to the punch with this one. OnePlus announced that its next smartphone would also come with a new USB Type-C port, which is really nice to see.

USB Type-C is a smaller, reversible port that brings support for reversible charging. It’s also a heck of a lot more convenient than the standard MicroUSB ports we have on our devices today. For more information about what exactly the benefits are when it comes to this new port, be sure to check out: What is USB Type-C? How does it change the game?

OnePlus recently held an AMA on Reddit, revealing a few notable specifications for the device. For starters, the OnePlus 2 will feature a big 3300mAh battery, which is nearly a 10% increase over the One’s unit.

Camera

oneplus-one-aa-16-of-34

So far, now a whole lot has been leaked about the OnePlus 2’s camera. There are some rumors floating around that hint at a 16MP rear-facing camera and a 5 or 8MP front-facer, but these rumors are backed up by little to no viable evidence. Seeing as how the One came with a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front shooter, bumping each camera up by a few megapixels would be a natural progression for the upcoming flagship, making them actually pretty believable.

In OnePlus’ recent AMA, the company did mention that the camera would be a major focus this time around, but unfortunately no other details were given about the rear or front shooters.

Software

oneplus-one-aa-7-of-34

The OnePlus One originally shipped with CyanogenMod 11S, which is based off of Android 4.4 KitKat. Although many consumers were huge fans of the software, there’s unfortunately no chance that the OnePlus 2 will ship with Cyanogen OS installed by default. Back in April, Cyanogen and OnePlus experienced an entirely overdramatic breakup, which basically meant that the two companies wouldn’t be working together in the future. But not all is lost for OnePlus on the software side, though.

OnePlus has developed its own software, dubbed Oxygen OS, which brings a few nifty gestures, quick settings improvements and more to a familiar “vanilla” Android look and feel. Oxygen OS is available for download for the OnePlus One, and will be the operating system that powers the OnePlus 2.

We still don’t have much information on what the software will bring this time around, so we’ll need to wait until the official unveiling to find out more about the software.

Three different variants?

oneplus-one-unboxing-8-of-29

Not too long ago, there became reason to believe that the OnePlus 2 may arrive in three different variants, thanks to three different model numbers passing through Bluetooth SIG. The model numbers, named A2001, A2003, and A2005, unfortunately don’t bring any new information to the table.

Although we’re unsure at the moment, it would be reasonable to assume that the three numbers stand for different storage capacities, such as 32/64/128GB variants. It’s also possible that OnePlus may have versions with different modems planned this time around, which could be important if the company is planning a broader global release.

The jury is still out on this one, so it looks like we may have to wait until the device launches on the 27th to find out some more info. Take a look at the Bluetooth SIG document below for more details:

Release date and pricing

oneplus-one-unboxing-14-of-29

OnePlus has not been shy when it comes to revealing price and release date information. In late June, the company announced that the OnePlus 2 would be officially unveiled to the public on Monday, July 27th at 7PM PT… in virtual reality. The announcement will be streamed live in VR so folks can experience it with their OnePlus-branded Cardboard viewers, which the company was giving away not too long ago.

Since Google Cardboard is essentially an empty shell that relies heavily on the phone’s software to run, everyone with another type of Cardboard viewer will have access to the unveiling.

On the pricing front, according to OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, the OnePlus 2 will cost less than 450 USD. There was no mention of a specific price point when the company announced this information the other day, so we’re unsure if the price will be closer to $449.99 or $300 like the OnePlus One.

Last year, Lau teased that the company’s first flagship would cost “less than $400″, and they absolutely delivered on that promise. Not only did the 16GB base model cost $299, but folks could also pick up the beefier 64GB variant for just $349. We could see a slight price hike this time around, but we’re sure most users will still be interested in the device if it costs upwards of $400.

Unfortunately, if the invite system annoyed you with the OnePlus One, you’re out of luck for the OnePlus 2. The company says:

We’re committed to maintaining razor-thin margins in order to give as much value as possible back to our users, and this drastically increases our risk. The OnePlus 2 will bring the challenges that come along with a brand new product, and initially, our invite system will help us to manage that risk.

OnePlus just recently ditched the invite system, giving everyone the ability to purchase the One without having to wait. So, the invite system won’t be around forever, but we do know that will be one of the only ways users will be able to buy the phone at launch. During the company’s Reddit AMA, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei revealed that OnePlus’ early supporters “will be prioritized” when it comes to the invite system, and that we should be on the lookout for more details sometime soon.

Wrap up

We’ll be sure to update this post as soon as we get some more information about the OnePlus 2. And if you have any rumors you’d like to add or thoughts on the upcoming smartphone, be sure to let us know in the comment section below.

OnePlus One heading to India’s Flipkart

oneplus one aa (33 of 34)

Flipkart has been teasing that a new handset is on its way to the popular Indian e-commerce retailer and it’s pretty hard to mistake the silhouette for anything other than the OnePlus One. We don’t have a sale date yet, but it could be right around the corner.

Currently, the OnePlus One is only officially available in India through an exclusive deal with Amazon. The 16GB handset arrived in the country back in February, following the launch of the 64GB model back in December 2014. A separate report citing industry sources suggests that the 64GB Sandstone Black model will be available through Flipkart first, which could go on sale as early as June 22nd.

Given the teaser, see above, we can probably expect the handset to arrive at Flipkart in the coming days. Expanding to include Flipkart in OnePlus’ distribution network has probably come about due to increased pressure from competing low-cost smartphone manufacturers in India, which are continuing to drive prices down in the country. Many of these competing handsets are already on sale through Flipkart, so it seems sensible that OnePlus wants to maximize its exposure across a number of retailers.

The news comes just one day after OnePlus confirmed that its upcoming OnePlus Two handset would be more expensive than the previous model. This means that we’re looking at more than $322 for the second generation handset, but the smartphone will be packing a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC, which is apparently fine-tuned to avoid any overheating problems.

We’ll keep our eyes open for more details from Flipkart in the coming days.

Still having touchscreen issues with your OnePlus One? This Cyanogen OS 12 build might help

oneplus-one-unboxing-23-of-29

If you’ve been experiencing touchscreen sensitivity or Bluetooth connection issues on your OnePlus One, you’ll be happy to know that one of the most recent versions of Cyanogen OS is here to help. Well, at least that’s what Cyanogen claims. OnePlus One owners have been plagued with touchscreen issues off and on ever since the device was released, and so far, only a few users have seen fixes come to their devices. But now version YNG1TAS2I3 of Cyanogen OS, which is still based off of Android 5.0, should fix the following problems:

  • Touchscreen sensitivity
  • Bluetooth connectivity with several in-car systems
  • MMS sending on several carriers

While this update was just recently released to Cyanogen’s site, early adopters have been reporting good results. The folks over at Android Police also claim that if you happen to be running build YNG1TAS17L, you can instead flash this incremental build of the software to save yourself around 500MB. If you aren’t running that version, however, you’ll need to flash the full ROM listed above.

Once you try out the new Cyanogen OS build, let us know if your problems are resolved!

Best Android phones [June 2015]

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Edge_Right_Edge_Slanted_01_TA

There are a wide range of smartphones that are up for grabs today with varying price points. So it can get a bit tricky to pick the best of them, mainly due to the sheer volume of devices. Some handsets, however, stand out in the crowd and we’re going to discuss the best of the best. Choice is one of the best things about choosing an Android device over other platforms.

The phones listed here have all been released by the end of June.

OnePlus One

oneplus_bamboo_styleswap

Despite being on the market for an entire year, the OnePlus One continues to make its way onto our list on the basis of price and performance. It runs a clean, customized version of Android in the form of OxygenOS and that makes the overall experience even better.

Right now, the model with 16GB of internal storage is available for $249 and $349 returns 64GB of internal storage along with year-long subscription of Dropbox Pro. The OnePlus One features a 5-inch display (1920×1080), 13MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera, Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 3,100 mAh battery. It runs Android 5.0.2 Lollipop and this summer should see Android 5.1 arrive in the form of a software update.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_Back_TA

This is another device from last year that has held up months later. The Galaxy Note 4 goes to show that some devices have stood the test of time quite convincingly. The Galaxy Note 4 was launched amidst plenty of hype and buzz during IFA 2015 in September. The smartphone was soon to be overshadowed by the launch of the Apple iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is a stellar handset.

Following the long range of Galaxy Note devices, this one too comes with the iconic S-Pen, an accessory that has some fancy tricks up its sleeve. On the hardware front, customers are greeted to a 5.7-inch display (2560×1440), 16MP rear camera, 3.7MP front-facing camera, Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, and 3220 mAh battery.

The Galaxy Note 4, even though its approaching the anniversary of its release, still maintains a high two-year contract price. With a two-year contract, the price is $299. Without a contract, the Galaxy Note 4 costs around $699. And any carriers with payment plans charge around $29 per month. The Galaxy Note 4 really gives you what you pay for.

Nexus 6

Google Nexus 6

The Nexus 6 was originally supposed to be an Android Silver device before the program was scrapped by Google. The program was touted to bring high-end hardware to consumers, a shift from the principles of selling stock Android devices on the cheap.

Although its size was a bit of a disappointment for the customers, there’s no denying that it is by far the best Nexus device to be sold by Google, perhaps after the Nexus 4 and 5. We highly doubt anyone would give the Galaxy Nexus that acclaim.

The handset has a massive a 5.96-inch display (2560×1440), 13MP camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 3GB of RAM, an abundance of internal storage, Snapdragon 805 processor, Android 5.1 Lollipop, and 3220 mAh battery housed inside.

The device, available directly from Google and select retailers, will set you back by $649 and $699 for the 32 and 64GB models, respectively. Don’t forget that the Nexus 6 will likely be among the first devices to receive Android M when it launches this fall.

LG G4

LG_G4_From_NYC_03

The LG G4 was announced recently and is only making its way to the markets now. It’s the company’s flagship handset, which means you’re getting the very best of LG. The smartphone is selling for just under $600 from T-Mobile off contract, which is a remarkable price for a flagship smartphone.

It features all the necessary hardware to grab your attention, including a 5.5-inch display (2560×1440) and an impressive design with a leather rear panel option available as well. The device hosts a 16MP camera with an f/1.8 lens underneath its gorgeous exterior and is accompanied by an 8MP front-facing camera with an aperture size of f/2.0, which is quite impressive for a front camera.

Other specifications, too, make the G4 the beast that it is. The internal storage is set at 32GB but is expandable by 2TB through a microSD card slot. The G4’s hexa-core processor, the Snapdragon 808, is paired with 3GB of RAM so performance is not an issue. For those looking to get the G4, T-Mobile is offering a 128GB microSD card for free along with the device, thus offering you an added incentive to get the device from Team Magenta.

The price of the G4 is set around $599 without a contract but carriers have payment plans to spread the cost across twenty-four months.

Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Main_TA

Adjudged the best smartphones available in the market, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge have topped the performance and usability charts from critics and users alike. In addition to featuring a groundbreaking design and technology underneath, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge were also voted to be sporting the best camera sensors in the industry by DxOMark, which is an industry approved site for judging mobile camera performance.

If you’re in the market for a flagship Android phone and money is no bar, you can’t do much better than the Galaxy S6 or the Galaxy S6 Edge right now. The smartphones are available from all major carriers as well as plenty of retailers, so you have a multitude of options to get either of the two devices.

The Galaxy S6 comes with a 5.1-inch Quad HD display, 16MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera, Exynos 7420 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32/64/128GB options when it comes to internal storage, Android 5.0.2 Lollipop or higher, and a 2550 mAh battery. The Galaxy S6 Edge has the same hardware specs sheet but with the curved edges on either side and a slightly larger 2600 mAh battery pack.

The Galaxy S6 starts from $599 off-contract, while the pricing for the Galaxy S6 Edge starts from $699 from major carriers in the United States. Of course, you can also get the devices by signing a two-year contract for $199.99 and $299.99, respectively.

What devices do you think are among the best available right now? Let us know in the comments.

OnePlus won’t issue Android 5.1 update for OxygenOS until the OnePlus Two is released

oneplus one aa (8 of 34)

OnePlus One owners running OxygenOS that have been hoping to get a timely update to Android 5.1 will unfortunately have to wait a while longer. OnePlus has just issued a statement explaining that, since the team working on the update is so small, the company won’t have an OTA for the community build of OxygenOS for the One until after the OnePlus Two is released. While the company didn’t comment on the release date of its next smartphone this time around, previous reports have stated we can expect a OnePlus Two release sometime in Q3 (July-September).

Due to the OnePlus/Cyanogen Inc. split up a few months ago, the OnePlus Two will run OxygenOS as its sole operating system. This makes it much more difficult for the company to release updates for its One handset, while also working towards the imminent release of the Two. There will also be an update hitting One devices soon that will supposedly take care of touchscreen issues, though no timeframe was given for the release.

Cyanogen OS 12.1, which is based off Android 5.1, is also in the works. OnePlus has a preview build that’s currently undergoing factory testing and Google certification, and should be rolling out sometime soon. We’ll be sure to let you know if we hear anything else from OnePlus in the future.

OnePlus One sticking with $50 price cut, Dropbox Pro offer with 64GB version

Did you miss that $50 off sale on the OnePlus One last week?  Well don’t fret, looks like it was so successful that OnePlus is keeping the price that way, at $249 for the 32GB and $299 for the 64GB version.

We were blown away by the response in sales and took a hard look at the numbers to make sure we were maintaining our commitment to our users.

OnePlus

It’s great to see continued interest in the OnePlus One.  It made quite a splash last year, offering flagship specs at a budget price.  Even with its age, it’s a better deal than new budget offerings at the $249 price-point.

To recall, we have a quad-core Snapdragon 801 SoC, 5.5″ 1080P display, 3GB RAM, 13 MP rear and 5 MP front cameras, 3,100 mAh battery, and Android 5.0 Lollipop (with UI options of either Cyanogen OS 12 or Oxygen OS).

Also, to complement the news, Oneplus partnered with Dropbox to make a bundle with the larger capacity One.  This deal gives you one year of a Dropbox Pro and a 64GB OnePlus One for $349.  Note that this offer is not permanent.  It starts on June 10th for “a limited time only” in the US, Canada, and EU.  Dropbox Pro gives you 1TB of cloud storage, secure sharing, and more.

Are you finally enticed by the $249 starting price or going to hold out for the OnePlus Two?

OnePlus announces price drop, new partnership

oneplus_one_price_drop

Last week OnePlus held a flash sale on their OnePlus One smartphone and it appears the sale may have revealed the sweet spot for buyers interested in the device. According to OnePlus, they were “blown away” by the response to the sale. That caused them to go back and take a look at their books, probably with an eye toward reducing their profit margin in deference to a lower price point. The work that was done will be a benefit for buyers who may have missed the flash sale. OnePlus has announced that they are making the starting price of $249 for a OnePlus One a permanent price change.

In conjunction with this new pricing strategy, OnePlus also announced a new partnership they have forged. OnePlus is bringing Dropbox on board as a partner to offer a one year Dropbox Pro subscription + 64GB OnePlus One bundle for only $349. With Dropbox Pro, users will get 1TB of cloud storage along with the normal features of Dropbox. Since a 64GB OnePlus One now runs $299, the Dropbox Pro subscription is effectively $50 for one year compared to the normal cost of $120 per year for 1TB of space.

OnePlus One now from $249 permanently, partners with Dropbox for promo

oneplus one unboxing (23 of 29)

At the beginning of the month ,OnePlus began a special flash sale promotion, offering up the OnePlus One for just $250 for the 16GB model or $300 for the 64GB version. For those that were considering picking up the phone but missed out on the flash sales, the good news is that the new price is now permanent!

After receiving tons of positive feedback over the ultra-aggressive price tag, OnePlus said they took a “hard look at the numbers to make sure [they] were maintaining [their] commitment to users.” With dropping component, assembly, and engineering costs, OnePlus now feels comfortable with passing down the savings to its customers. n reality, the fact that the

In reality, the fact that the OnePlus 2 is likely just around the corner and newer devices like the ZenFone 2 and Idol 3 are increasing the competition in the low-end price segment probably have just as big as a role to play here. Regardless of OnePlus’ motivation, the new asking price is very welcome and certainly makes the OnePlus One stand out as one of the best values on the market today. OnePlus isn’t just dropping the pricing on the OnePlus One though, they are also introducing a new pricing option.

While you can get a 16GB OPO for $250 and a 64GB OPO for $300, a new $350 bundle will net you a 64GB OnePlus One and an entire year of Dropbox Pro. With the Dropbox Pro offer, you’ll get 1TB of secure 256-bit AES and SSL encrypted storage. While the option extends the amount of storage for accessing files on your phone, Dropbox Pro also will play nicely with your other mobile devices, Windows, Linux, and even Macs. Considering that Dropbox Pro normally costs $99 a year, this adds up to a saving of $50.

What do you think of the new OPO pricing, as well as the Dropbox Pro bundle? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

OnePlus offering limited time Flash Sales for One smartphone

oneplus-flash_sales

Because it’s seemingly incapable of running a standard sale, OnePlus is offering a limited time Flash Sale for its One smartphone. Running for one week only, it’s a promotion that sees the handset sold at a discounted rate.

For the first time, OnePlus is selling the 64GB Sandstone Black and 16GB Silk White models at prices that start at $250. Beginning today, a limited quantity of models will be listed with discounts; the timing changes on a daily basis.

Daily Sale Schedule:
June 1 – 12:00 GMT (8 am EST)
June 2 – 2:00 GMT (10 pm EST -1 day)
June 3 – 12:00 GMT (8 am EST)
June 4 – 2:00 GMT (10 pm EST -1 day)
June 5 – 12:00 GMT (8 am EST)
June 6 – 2:00 GMT (10 pm EST -1 day)
June 7 – 12:00 GMT (8 am EST)

It’s likely that OnePlus is blowing through its inventory in an effort to make room for a successor. The timing makes sense for a refresh and the specs are starting to look a little outdated by comparison. But, with that in mind, you could do way worse for yourself than to consider one of these for the money.
