OnePlus kills its unique swappable covers before they had the chance to live
Although more people have been able to get their hands the OnePlus One than ever before, new handset owners won’t be able to accessorize them as thoroughly as was first thought. After two months of teasing its bamboo, silk white and sandstone black “StyleSwap” covers, the company has been forced to kill its custom backplates before they got the chance to go on sale. According to a company blog post, “technical difficulties” during mass production meant that covers suffered from creaks or became slightly loose, risking damage to the non-removable battery that it was meant to protect.
Mirroring its catchphrase, OnePlus says it didn’t settle, but instead arrived at a “complicated decision.” If you were dead set on getting a bamboo cover for your One, the company has some good news — a “small number” of wooden backplates did pass the grade, and they’ll soon go up on its online store. The company is also exploring the idea of outfitting special limited edition handsets with kevlar or denim, but says it’ll put everything it’s learned into practice for the eventual launch of the OnePlus 2.

OnePlus One StyleSwap covers have been canceled

The OnePlus One came into the game claiming to be a flagship killer, and it packed some beastly specs into an unbeatable pricepoint. However, OnePlus did not stop there. They also promised amazing customization options from a product dubbed StyleSwap covers. These covers were interchangable replacement back plates that could be changed by the user. StyleSwap covers were said to be coming in a variety of covers and even some wood options. This peeked many people’s interest as such a feature is not available from many other companies.
Unfortunately, today OnePlus announced that it would be discontinuing the StyleSwap covers before they even began. They claimed that there had been many snags in finding a way to mass produce the covers and still maintain a high quality of workmanship. Also, OnePlus discovered that the covers had not been implemented as well as they had thought. Changing the covers was proving to be very difficult and the replacements would often be loose and creaky. The loose covers could also result in battery damage. We have to commend OnePlus on not wanting to release a product that is half baked and could damage their phone, but we are still disappointed. Maybe OnePlus can iron out the problems that arose and add StyleSwap covers as a feature for the OnePlus Two.
If you still want a StyleSwap cover, OnePlus says that there is a limited number of bamboo versions that have already been produced and they will be selling the entire stock. But once they are gone, there will be no more produced.

Settling again: OnePlus One StyleSwap covers cancelled, mentions OnePlus 2
OnePlus seems to be running from one failed marketing ploy to another. This time, it is going to affect some of their existing customers after OnePlus announced it is cancelling its run of OnePlus One StyleSwap covers. The StyleSwap covers were meant to include exotic build materials, like bamboo, but OnePlus claims it has run into fundamental design issues, particularly with the interaction of the back cover and the battery, that is forcing them to cancel the StyleSwap covers in their entirety. For those that are particularly zealous about getting a StyleSwap case, OnePlus does have a small number which it intends to sell – hopefully not through a invite style system this time.
OnePlus themselves are recognizing fault for this oversight, stopping short of settling – which it invariably is – and calling it “[making] complicated decisions”. Interestingly, the post from OnePlus mentions that they won’t be making the same mistake for the “OnePlus 2“, presumably a reference to the OnePlus One’s successor. Many of us would have expected there to be a successor regardless, but OnePlus has previously said they are wholly focussed on the OnePlus One – perhaps they have started looking forward to their next device and undoing the issues of their maiden release.

How to speed up the OnePlus One charging time

The battery on the OnePlus One is undeniably good, no, fantastic, but a little tweak to the device could decrease the amount of time it takes for the device to charge, keeping the device in your pocket for that bit longer.
The method involves flashing a kernel so the standard we do not accept any responsibility for bricked or exploded devices applies here. The problem here is that the OnePlus One never draws more than the standard USB output power, so when compared to standard AC power, the charging time is almost doubled. However, a developer by the name of Francisco Franco has developed a kernel that will unlock the charging potential of the device.
Prerequisites
There are a few requirements for this to work: first, you’ll need to be running CyanogenMod 11S that the OnePlus One ships with, together with TWRP recovery, and an unlocked bootloader.
Instructions
1. Download Francokernel.zip directly to your phone storage and boot into recovery.
2. Once TWRP recovery starts up, proceed to install the .zip file you just downloaded.
3. Wipe the Dalvik Cache and Cache for good measure and then reboot.
Result
Now when you plug in your OnePlus One device to charge, the device will draw the full capability of the AC power and you’ll find your charging time is drastically reduced.
Be sure to check out the source for further enhancements and optimisations to the kernel to bring added functionality to your OnePlus One.

OnePlus responds to the Apple iPhone 6 Plus, welcomes it to the “Plus” family
In something that is becoming a bit of a tradition for the young company, OnePlus responds to the Apple iPhone 6 Plus by posting the above image via their Facebook page and offering yet another OnePlus One to win and more invites. As with many of OnePlus’ marketing campaigns, this one is no less confusing as it doesn’t really say anything, nor does it really compare their OnePlus One with the iPhone 6 Plus, at least, not explicitly. Of course, that doesn’t mean we can’t.
As we know, both devices have a 5.5-inch display, but that’s essentially where the similarities end. The OnePlus One has an almost-top-of-the-line quadcore Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.5GHz with 3GB RAM, a 13MP camera and a 3,100mAh battery. Contrasting this is the iPhone 6 Plus which has a dualcore Cortex A8 64-bit processor running at 1.4GHz, 1GB RAM, 8MP OIS and 2,915mAh. While that might look like a win for the OnePlus One, the devil is always in the detail and the iPhone 6 Plus, like its predecessors, will likely have an extremely optimized experience – now with 64-bit architecture – that will generally equal or outstrip the performance of many an Android device, the OnePlus One included.
Of course, the one thing the OnePlus One does have going for it is price, which starts at $299 for the 16GB version off-contract, and is likely much better value than the $299 on-contract asking price for the 16GB iPhone 6 Plus.
Still, we’re all Android fans here, so what do you think about OnePlus’ attempt to piggy-back on the news of Apple‘s device releases? Let us know your thoughts below.
