OnePlus giving away bamboo StyleSwap covers after discontinuing them
Remember the StyleSwap covers that were discontinued last month? They are back… sort of. Apparently, the demand for them was so high that OnePlus feels the need to give away the hundreds of units that did maintain good quality. Putting them up for sale would be unfair and a bidding war is not necessary; therefore, OnePlus’ only option is a giveaway.
OnePlus asks that you complete a form to be entered for a chance to win a bamboo StyleSwap cover. The form is available today and entries will be denied on November 4. Winners will then be notified by OnePlus within the next day of the contest’s end.

OnePlus One pre-orders will go live on October 27th. For one hour.
One of the most widely criticized parts of OnePlus‘ campaign to sell its maiden smartphone, the OnePlus One, has been its handling of device distribution and its use of the maddeningly exclusive invite system. Stopping short of admitting the invite system was a mistake, OnePlus went on the record about a month ago to say that they would instead be using a pre-order system starting in October. OnePlus has finally announced that these OnePlus One pre-orders are going to start on October 27th, but with one teeny, tiny, big detail: the pre-orders are only going to be open for an hour.
Yes, you read that correctly. According to OnePlus’ blog post, on October 27th 15:00 GMT, people can pre-order the OnePlus One for one solitary hour. It would seem that the pre-order system isn’t actually what we thought it was going to be, and in fact, OnePlus says at the bottom of the post:
“While the pre-order system won’t completely replace the current invites method, it is certainly a huge step towards expanding the reach of OnePlus.”
While the OnePlus One is still fantastic value for flagship level hardware specifications, and OnePlus did give away 50,000 invites a few weeks ago, the combination of the pre-order and invites system still clearly lacks the flexibility that some people actually want when purchasing their smartphones.
What do you think about the OnePlus One pre-orders system? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

OnePlus One to open up pre-orders soon, but there’s a catch
The OnePlus One has been sort of an underground hit, namely due to the fact you could only purchase the handset with an invite. Thankfully, if you’ve had your eyes on it for a while, OnePlus just revealed that its $300 Android smartphone is, more or less, ready to go mainstream next week, on October 27th. Pre-orders for the newly announced general availability are set to go live that day at 11AM ET, which is great news to people who haven’t had a chance to jump on the invite-only wave. The bad news, however, is that this is going to be limited to a one-hour window. For now, OnePlus is continuing to take invites, so that’s still an option to those with access to one. “While the pre-order system won’t completely replace the current invites method, it is certainly a huge step towards expanding the reach of OnePlus,” the company said in a blog post.
It may not be the best solution to keep up with the high demand — but, at the very least, it’s a better option than to be hunting for an invite. Those interested need to keep this page here bookmarked — that’s where the pre-orders are expected to be taken in due time.

OnePlus pre-order system will go live for 24 hours on October 27th
Earlier this month, OnePlus tested out a pre-order system instead of the extremely difficult invite system that they’ve used to sell the OnePlus One so far. The pre-orders were also sent out as “invitations,” however, so not everyone had a chance to put an order in. Fortunately, the company is opening up their pre-0rder system again next week, but this time it will be open to anyone that wants to put an order in.
Starting today, you can add a OnePlus One and accessories to your shopping cart and get everything ready to be ordered. Then, for 24 hours on October 27th, those orders will process and you’ll immediately get a date for when your device will ship. It’s not clear on just how far back those shipping dates will be, but I guess we’ll know next week.
Unfortunately, this pre-order system isn’t going to completely replace the OnePlus invite system. The company plans to eventually do away with invites and permanently move onto something else, but for right now, this is the best you’ll get.

More to expect at our free Engadget Expand event in NYC!
If you’re keeping score, we’ve announced a bunch of great speakers heading to this year’s Engadget Expand (such as RJD2 and the head of DARPA, Arati Prabhakar). Of course there’s plenty more where that came from and we’re excited to announce what else you’ll see at the Javits Center on November 7-8 in New York City!
Today we’re adding 5 speakers to our already awesome slate of technology leaders coming to Engadget Expand:
- Michael McAlpine, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Princeton University
- Paul Eremenko, Technical Project Lead, Project Ara, Google ATAP
- Alexander Reben, President & CEO at BlabDroid Inc.
- Bas Lansdorp, CEO & Co-founder, Mars One
- Alex Gruzen, CEO, WiTricity
You can flip through the gallery above to see who we’ve already announced and there’s much more to come soon. But Expand isn’t just about speakers, it’s about letting you get hands-on with the future of technology and for that, we’ve got a few awesome exhibitors to announce.
OnePlus
Our friends at OnePlus will let Expand attendees go hands-on with the elusive OnePlus One smartphone. The company’s mission is to never settle and deliver a premium-looking smartphone with top of the line specs. The flagship One starts at $299, unlocked and free of contract.
Suitable Technologies
Suitable Technologies has a lot planned for Expand, not least of which is letting attendees move around and experience the show floor from the comfort of, say, their Santa Monica beach bungalow. The company’s Beam device makes the typical conference call experience much less lame.
GizmoSphere
We met GizmoSphere and its Gizmo development board at Engadget Live in Boston this summer. The company is bringing its experience down to Expand, where you can battle your friend for victory in the ultimate, “immersive” deathmatch. No, no, there won’t be blood, but still — this isn’t your typical game, either.
There’s much more to announce soon, but in the meantime — grab your free tickets right here. Also, our ‘In The City‘ sweepstakes runs through 11:59PM ET on October 7th, the winner of which will score themselves and a guest a free trip to Expand on our dime!

OnePlus 2 confirmed to be coming in Q2 or Q3 2015 during Reddit AMA
Given the success of the OnePlus One, we always expected OnePlus would have been working on a successor to that device. Sure enough, Carl Pei of OnePlus today confirmed during their Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) that they are indeed already working on a follow-up, called the OnePlus 2, and expects it to be released sometime in Q2 or Q3 2015. Pei also suggests that the device will be running Android L as he thinks “Android L would be standard” by then. Perhaps the most interesting thing that was said during the AMA was that they are at least considering different sizes for their next device. While they obviously stopped short of saying they wouldn’t go for a phablet again, at least we know they are listening.
The OnePlus One is probably one of the best value phones of 2014, challenging even the aging Nexus 5 for that crown, bettering it with a Snapdragon 801 procesoor as well as other specs that put the device on par with many of the best devices at the time. If there was only downfall of the device, it was the invite system that OnePlus instituted to limit wasted inventory on their end, but created some pretty unsightly supply issues for desperate customers who wanted a piece of their wonderful hardware. We hope they’ve learned their lesson on their maiden device and we can’t wait to see what’s next in store.
What do you think about the OnePlus 2 being on its way? Let us know your thoughts.

OnePlus talks about its new pre-order system, calls the invite system “a blessing”
We knew it was coming, but OnePlus has started a blog to talk about exactly why they are migrating to a pre-order system from their much-maligned invite system. In what may come as a shock to everyone who opposed the invite system, press and consumers alike, OnePlus has said that “the invite system has been a blessing”. The reason for this is that OnePlus chose to “forego hardware margins” for the OnePlus One, which necessitated careful inventory control to prevent build-up of unsold units and was achieved with the invite system. As a progression of their controls and in the hopes of selling more units, OnePlus is migrating to the pre-order system. While this all seems like good business sense, something isn’t quite adding up here.
How can such a small company abandon all hardware margins? How would they make any money at all? Unless there is a backer behind all of this – this is said to be Oppo – OnePlus is operating presumably at a loss. Another point I found unusual is the fact that their marketing and sales team misjudged the market so much that they actually lost all of their goodwill due to their invite system. Why didn’t they launch with the pre-order system? If it is just as good at controlling your inventory but you are able to sell more through it, why wasn’t this the original option? While OnePlus’ motto is “Never Settle”, there is very little I would say the company hasn’t settled on, and their continued defence of their strategies seems to suggest that they are happy to continue doing so. /rant
