OnePlus Two rumoured to have Snapdragon 810, 4GB RAM and Quad HD display

Rumours specs have dropped today, suggesting that the new […]

Despite all the criticisms and marketing flops, it looks like OnePlus has come out of 2014 a winner. OnePlus launches Android Lollipop Alpha: their new non-Cyanogen ROM

oneplus

It’s safe to say that OnePlus and their software partner Cyanogen have been experiencing some communication difficulties lately. If you don’t remember, OnePlus found out that they couldn’t ship the OnePlus One to India running Cyanogen’s software, thanks to an exclusive deal between Cyanogen and Micromax. Then to clarify, Cyanogen released a statement telling saying this wasn’t necessarily the case. If that’s not enough, a few weeks later, the OnePlus One was completely banned in India, thanks to that deal with Cyanogen and Micromax. After about a week the ban was lifted and Indian users could begin to buy the phone again.

Thanks to this whole debacle, OnePlus has put together a group of software developers, and is now on its way to releasing their own ROM independently from Cyanogen. Earlier today, OnePlus announced their first ROM, Android Lollipop Alpha. This new software build is OnePlus’ first foray into building their own custom ROM. The Android Lollipop Alpha build is in the very early stages of development, so there are naturally a ton of known bugs with the software already. There aren’t any extra features baked into the OS, so it’s basically just bare-bones AOSP Lollipop for now.

You can flash the software to your OnePlus One using the instructions on the site. When the software is ready for the general public in the future, OnePlus will likely send out an over-the-air update to its users. So, if you aren’t keen on flashing alpha software to your device, give it some time, and you’ll receive OnePlus’ software sometime within the next couple of months.

Remember, this is an alpha build of the software, so it will be extremely buggy a difficult to use in some situations. Here are the known bugs in the software so far:

  • Data roaming is on by default. Make sure to turn if off to avoid potential charges.
  • As always, flashing a custom ROM incurs the risk of bricking your phone. Make sure you know what you’re doing and backup everything.
  • Camera and video may be unstable. This build supports 4k video, however quality may be low as we are still fine-tuning the camera.
  • Capacitive keys do not turn off when you enable software keys.
  • Clock crashes periodically.
  • If using the new app pinning feature in L, make sure to turn on the software keys first. Otherwise, you will have to reboot your machine.
  • On first boot, startup time will be a bit slow. Rest assured we will speed things up in the future.
  • Wi-Fi may be unstable

If you’re interested in getting the software for yourself, head to the OnePlus link below!

OnePlus celebrates the coming of 2015 with an Android Lollipop Alpha for the OnePlus One

It seems not even the New Year can stop work at some manufacturers. It appears OnePlus has been hard at work despite the festivities and released an Android Lollipop Alpha for the OnePlus One yesterday. The Android Lollipop Alpha comes in the form of a custom ROM, which OnePlus says will eventually become their custom ROM for the […]

OnePlus One can now be sold in India

OnePlus

OnePlus has gone through many ups and downs since it released the One this past April. Most of the issues they’ve had have been their own doing, but recently a ban was placed on the OnePlus One to sell in India because CyanogenMod had signed an exclusivity deal with Mircomax. Well due to a decision made today, OnePlus can sell again in India temporarily.

It was decided that Micromax targets the low-end market, whereas the OnePlus One targets the high-end market. So until they can take the case back to the judge who initially placed the ban, OnePlus can sell their One to India. Then, it all depends on whether or not OnePlus can convince the judge to let them continue sales in India.

However even if they can continue sales in India, the exclusivity agreement between CyanogenMod and Micromax still holds, which will keep OnePlus One owners from upgrading their devices. To be honest, it was kind of a low blow for CyanogenMod to have signed this agreement with Micromax when they already had a working arrangement with OnePlus. Such is business I suppose.

For those who were wanting a OnePlus One in India, you should act now before the case is taken back to the judge, as the ban may be placed again.

OnePlus customer service getting spotty reviews due to poor RMA responses

OnePlus customer serviceOnePlus has had an interesting last few months to say the least. On the one hand, the ‘startup’ Chinese manufacturer surprised the Android community with one of the best value smartphones with flagship specifications that impressed in the OnePlus One. On the other hand, their marketing campaigns have gone through some harsh scrutiny, not without reason, including its attempts to legitimize its horrendous invite system and introducing a pre-order system that is only in effect one day every few weeks. OnePlus customer service is under the microscope this week after its been revealed the company has had less than stellar communication with customers requesting RMA replacements for defective devices.

According to two separate Reddit posts, the authors claim OnePlus has effectively ignored their requests to have their defective devices exchanged for a working unit. In fact, similar stories appear to be on the OnePlus forums with many of them unanswered by OnePlus representatives. That’s not to say that there are plenty of OnePlus Ones out there that are defective – in fact, many people who do have the phone are enjoying it immensely, with good reason. Rather, it’s just a reminder of how young the company is and yet another mark on its spotty resume moving forward.

What do you think about the OnePlus customer service? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

OnePlus not solving issues with defective devices, ignoring RMA requests

OnePlus_One_Official_01If you decide to order a OnePlus One, you should hope that you get a flawless device the first time around. According to some comments on Reddit and the OnePlus forums, customers that received defective devices have been ignored when they tried to file RMAs to get the devices replaced.

One user’s device was having audio issues, and when he tried to contact OnePlus to have the problem fixed they sent a file to flash on the device that wiped the phone. Unfortunately, it didn’t fix the audio bug, either. When asked about exchanging the device or getting a refund, it was complete radio silence from OnePlus.

Unfortunately, that’s not the only instance, and there are some unanswered comments on the OnePlus forums with similar issues. To be clear, OnePlus isn’t intentionally sending out tons of defective units, but they’re completely dropping the ball in the support department.

The OnePlus One has had an extremely bumpy life, and this is just going to be another red mark when we look back at how OnePlus handled such a unique device.

OnePlus One pre-orders Round 2 to take place November 17 with steep discounts on accessories

OnePlus_Pre-Orders_Round_2

As promised, OnePlus is hosting another round of pre-orders for the OnePlus One on November 17. The first round took place on October 27, and didn’t go so well due to software issues. What is it about companies not being able to handle pre-orders properly? Obviously OnePlus isn’t alone here.

Anyways, the ordering will go live at 16:00 GMT (8am PST, 11am EST) on November 17 for one hour. You can still prepare your cart ahead of time (right now actually) with your shipping and billing information. Once the ordering begins, you will be able to check out and complete your order. It’s also possible that your order would ship right away if stock is available. If not, your order will go to pre-order status and you will get an estimated ship date.

Also, as a celebration, OnePlus will be offering steep discounts on any accessories that you bundle with your order.

The OnePlus is a nice phone for the money, but is it really worth all of this to get one? What happens if something goes wrong with it? Do you really think you will be able to get service?

OnePlus sets sights on 1 million sales of One

OnePlus One

As we’ve talked about before, the OnePlus One is a very interesting device. It provides flagship level specs for a mid-range phone price (starting at $299). On top of that, it’s the only smartphone with just Cyanogenmod running on it, providing all sorts of customization that runs even deeper than vanilla Android. OnePlus has even promised to have the newest version of Android on the One within 90 days (the clock is ticking by the way). However, you can only get one through an invite or pre-ordering system. Nevertheless, this combination seems to be doing well for a company that started less than a year ago.

OnePlus has sold 500,000 One units

Forbes had the opportunity to talk with OnePlus Co-founder Carl Pei, who said that they’ve sold 500,000 OnePlus One units. However, that isn’t enough, as Pei says they’re shooting to sell 1 million units by year’s end. Says Pei “It’s going to be hard, but I think it’s possible.”

This would be great, if they’d only just allow people to buy them…

Excited for the opportunity to buy a OnePlus One?

Pre-order system for OnePlus experiences issues, company once again apologizes

oneplus_the_ship_has_sailed

Nothing seems to come easy for OnePlus. There have been software issues and hardware issues with the One. However, the biggest problem is its availability. The invite system was a total mess as no one could get a hold of an invite. And there was really no reason for it. So OnePlus scrapped it in favor of a pre-order system. The company would allow prospective buyers to purchase the device at select times. Unfortunately, the pre-order system is not all that much better. The servers used experienced issues trying to handle a large influx of people.

OnePlus, focusing on being as transparent as possible, provided this explanation after apologizing:

In the lead up to opening our pre-order window, we more than doubled our server capacity to handle the expected traffic. However the amount of people signing in to submit pre-orders caused them to hang at certain points in the process, leaving many users unable to log in.

As more people signed on, the backlog of connections piled up and created a bad experience for many visitors trying to access the site. This left far too many users frustrated, disappointed and order-less. We spent the past 24 hours identifying the weak points that to this and mapping out a strategy to address them.

The next pre-order window to purchase the OnePlus One will open on November 17 at 12:00PM EST.
