OnePlus is letting 50 people trade in their Samsung Galaxy handset for a OnePlus 2
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
OnePlus has had some pretty unusual contests in the past, some more infamous than others. There was the phone smashing contest that saw people destroy their phones without even knowing the entry criteria, and then there was the contest that was for women only and required them to take photos of themselves with a OnePlus logo. OnePlus’ latest contest probably belongs in the bin of slightly misguided contests as the Chinese manufacturer is offering 50 people the opportunity to trade in their Samsung Galaxy handset for a OnePlus 2 i.e. either the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6 Edge or Galaxy S6.
The obvious flaw with the contest is that all of these Samsung handsets can cost up to twice as much as the OnePlus 2 in some markets, and we’re interested to know why OnePlus is only targeting Samsung devices with this contest instead of just all flagships, iPhone included. Obviously, we can’t fault OnePlus completely as the “donated” phones do go to charity Hope Phones, but it’s an obvious targeted campaign at Samsung that doesn’t quite hit the right note. Again.
What do you think about OnePlus’ latest contest? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

OnePlus 2 reservation list closing October 22 amid production issues
After amassing over 5 million sign-ups, OnePlus will be closing its reservation list next week. From October 22 onward, no one will be able to reserve a OnePlus 2, as OnePlus is now focusing on fulfilling all of those orders.
From OnePlus:
“As production is ramping up, we want to ensure that as many people as possible who signed up get their invite, so we feel it’s in the best interest of our users to close the list and make sure that this happens.”
That, of course, doesn’t mean those that aren’t on the reservation list won’t be able to get a OnePlus 2. On the contrary, those that have already purchased a device will begin to receive shareable invites, which can be given out to friends, family, forum members, and so on. There’s also still the chance at grabbing an invite from OnePlus’ social media channels, where they regularly hold contests, giving out thousands of invites at a time.
This is something OnePlus should’ve done awhile ago or maybe not even employed a reservation list at all. While the company says their list has amassed over five million sign-ups, there’s the question of how many of those sign-ups are real? Many individual users have found ways to put in hundreds of reservations, increasing their chances for the device. There’re other factors to consider as well. That said, five million sign-ups don’t necessarily mean five million sales.
Keep in mind, at this point, OnePlus is just fulfilling orders from its invite list. You still have to have an invite to get one, meaning the general public won’t be able to head over to the company’s website and just buy one. This could potentially hurt sales exponentially.
Unfortunately, most of these issues are seemingly coming from OnePlus’ problems with production. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei announced in August that the company was running into production issues. More recently, it was announced just last month that these delays are happening worldwide.
Despite these problems, OnePlus is planning on launching the OnePlus X in India on October 29, which hopefully won’t require a reservation list. It’s also hoped that OnePlus won’t have trouble fulfilling orders with the OnePlus X in India, particularly because of the recent manufacturing partnership they agreed to in India.

The OnePlus X makes an appearance, full details leak
The third phone from OnePlus has reared its head. The OnePlus X, the little brother to the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 appeared on OppoMart this morning, revealing specs and a picture of the device.
The OnePlus X will run $249, making it the cheapest offering from the company that focuses on low cost, high performance phones. The X will be powered by the same Snapdragon 801 processor as the One last year, and will be clocked at 2.5GHz. The rest of the specs are below.
| OnePlus X | |
|---|---|
| Processor | Snapdragon 801, 2.5Ghz |
| OS | Oxygen OS based on Android 5.1 |
| Display | 5″, 1080p, 2.5D glass |
| RAM | 3 GB |
| Storage | 16/64GB |
| Main Camera | 13MP |
| Front Camera | 8MP |
| Battery | 2450mAh |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n |
The OnePlus X will use a Micro Sim and have two SIM slots, be unlocked for worldwide use (although you can’t use it on on CDMA carriers), and will be offered in multiple colors, according to OppoMart.
We recently saw the X pass through TENAA (the Chinese certification office) and we’ve been getting teasers on social media so the launch looks eminent. We’ve seen October 29th throw around several times.
Do you think that OnePlus can disrupt the budget market with the OPX? Let us know what you think about the new device with a flagship processor from two years ago.

OnePlus will stop taking reservations for invites on October 22
OnePlus will be ending their reservation system on October 22, and focus on fulfilling those reservations by sending out invites. The system has amassed over 5 million reservations, a success by any metric. Now that production of the OnePlus 2 is ramping up, the aggressive start-up will begin to start sending out more invitations so that people can actually buy the sought after phone.
OnePlus has rightly been criticized for their invite system. It was originally put in place when the OnePlus One launched to protect the company from having too much stock at one time. If you know exactly how many phones you need, you’re never going to get stuck with inventory you can’t sell. Some phones were even being made and shipped out the same week, which led to some complaints about yellow screens from glue that hadn’t dried yet.
But, OnePlus wasn’t content to slowly make progress and fulfill orders. The company leveraged the press they were getting from the invite system, and started doing contests to jump the line and get an immediate invite. Some were dumb. Some were incredibly sexist. None of them helped the company’s image.
For the OnePlus 2, they decided to change it up. They introduced a reservation system that would again, give them an idea of how many phones they would need to produce. This time you could move further up the list by sharing links and getting your friends to sign up. Many are still annoyed with this system but, OnePlus has shipped more phones in a smaller amount of time than their last launch. Even if they didn’t launch on time.
“As production is ramping up, we want to ensure that as many people as possible who signed up get their invite, so we feel it’s in the best interest of our users to close the list and make sure that this happens. In one week (October 22), the OnePlus 2 Invite Reservation List will no longer be taking new entries. “
Now, that system is coming to an end. OnePlus will begin to send out more invites to those on the list. Those lucky enough to have purchased the phone already will also be getting shareable invites in the near future. If you’re looking for an invite, giveaways are often done on their social media account and in the OnePlus forums by the company and previous customers with invites to burn.
Time will tell if the invite system was a true positive for the company. While it did protect their product line, it also hurt their image and pushed some customers away for good. OnePlus shipped a surprising 1 million OnePlus One’s, but a long term future is not assured in such a volatile industry. You need only look at HTC’s current troubles for evidence.
What do you think about the invite system? Was it the right move for OnePlus? Should they have switched it up even more for the OnePlus 2? Let us know in the comments what you think.

OnePlus 2 reservation list to close as invites ramp up

Reservations for the OnePlus 2 have apparently hit a rather astonishing 5 million sign-ups since the handset was launched earlier in the year. Although as I’m sure those sitting in the waiting list will know, the small smartphone company isn’t hitting those sort of production numbers, but the company wants to start making a dent in these reservations.
Given the numbers involved and the already long wait times, OnePlus has decided to close access to its reservation list for new entries next week. Potential customers who are already in the queue will then receive their invite based on where they are in the list chronologically. Furthermore, reservation numbers will be locked in place after October 22nd as well.
In case you weren’t aware, those already in the list are able to jump up a few places by sharing invites with other people. Of course, this has the added side effecting of pushing others back places too, so we can probably expect a mad rush of sharing in the last few days.
As the reservation list will close in one weeks’ time, those looking to get their hands on a OnePlus 2 invite after that date will have to rely on the old fashion way of receiving one from friends or asking online for one. Customers who purchase their new smartphone through oneplus.net will receive shareable invites in the near future, so hopefully availability won’t be an issue.
OnePlus also says that it will be giving away thousands of invites through its social media channels, so those might be worth keeping an eye on too.
The new OnePlus giveaway may be its worst yet

Do you own one of Samsung’s 2015 flagship phones? Are you itching to get rid of it for a phone that costs about half of the price you paid? Our saviors OnePlus are here to rescue you from those curved edges and styluses.
OnePlus is hosting a contest, and if you’re one of 50 lucky winners, you can trade in your $650+ Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ or Note 5 for the hard to purchase, $389 “flagship killer”. Never mind the fact that you could sell your phone for more than the OnePlus 2 costs new. Never mind that Swappa has 53 listings for OnePlus 2’s for as low as $395, with recent sales going as low as $360.
This, again, is another ridiculous giveaway only there to drum up free press for OnePlus. And yes, I realize the irony that we’re writing about it. The point of this article today is tell you to not buy a OnePlus 2, even if you are “lucky” enough to get an invite.
“The OnePlus 2 was created by tech lovers, for tech lovers. We keep our devices free from gimmicks and bloatware. We explore what’s fresh and exciting, as opposed to recycling the same technology as incredible breakthroughs time and time again. That’s why we are giving those who may have settled for The Next Big Thing an interesting opportunity.“
OnePlus has demonstrated time and time again that they’re unprofessional, arrogant and not very good at what they’re doing. From the disastrous, sexist “Ladies First” contest to blacklisting bloggers because an editorial exposed them as frauds, to being unable to deliver on promised launch dates. OnePlus is bad and they should feel bad.
This doesn’t even take into account that the OnePlus 2 isn’t the “2016 Flagship Killer” that they promise. The lack of NFC has been well documented, and with the rise of convenient mobile payments on the rise, it is actually a big deal. This is the first item on a very long list of why OnePlus missed the mark.
To be honest, I did get an invite and I did buy a OnePlus 2. And I returned it. The phone never made it out of the packaging before I sent it back because I’m uncomfortable giving this company my money and you should be too.
OnePlus states on their giveaway page that they’re going to be giving away the collected phones to HopePhones. If you’d like to support HopePhones, who connect medical technology to those in need I suggest you donate directly to the company instead.

OnePlus is asking you to donate your Galaxy S6 or Note 5 for a OnePlus 2

While the OnePlus One managed to take the tech world by storm last year, the company has had a harder go at it in 2015 due to a variety of issues related to the launch of the OnePlus 2, as well as increased competition in the low-cost flagship segment. This has led many to wonder how much longer the company can keep things going, though OnePlus isn’t giving up just yet.
Not only is OnePlus getting ready to release a second lower-end handset, they recently opened up the OP2 for sale to those without invites for an hour. And now the company has also launched a new ‘contest’ that it hopes will bring more attention to the OnePlus 2. Too bad contest aren’t exactly a strong point for the company.
OnePlus has had a history of creating controversial contests, including the Smash the Past contest and a contest that was deemed as extremely sexist by much of the web. Thankfully, destroying phones or taking pictures aren’t part of the deal this time, OnePlus is instead asking folks to give them their Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, or Note 5 in exchange for a free OnePlus 2. Don’t worry, OnePlus isn’t smashing the Galaxies received, but instead promise to donate the phone to Hope Phones, a charitable organization that helps bring medical technology to those in need.

The concept here is actually a noble one, but once again OnePlus has failed when it comes down to execution. First, all the above mentioned handsets are worth more than the OnePlus 2, and newer phones like the Edge+ and Note 5 are worth almost double the price of OnePlus’ flagship. Second, they are billing this as a contest and therefore only shipping 50 phones in total (with the winner apparently being selected at random), severely crippling the potential marketing reach. Then again, they might have trouble finding more Samsung users that would actually take up this deal.

We understand that Samsung was likely picked as a target because they are the biggest and baddest of the Android OEMs, but limiting it to just Sammy probably wasn’t a great move either. If OnePlus really wanted to reap positive PR for donating phone, while actually inciting more interest among Samsung users, we think a better approach would have been to perhaps give “two OnePlus 2s for the price of one Samsung donation”. Or better yet, opening this competition up to owners of HTC, Apple, LG, and other flagship phones of 2015.
What do you think of this contest? What could OnePlus have done to make it more appealing? For those that are interested in learning more, you can head over to OnePlus’ website.
OnePlus will help you get rid of that old, crusty Samsung with new trade-in offer
You have only had your new Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Galaxy Note 5 for a few months at most now, but it probably feels like you are lugging around some out-of-date bag phone, right? OnePlus wants to help you out with the envy you must be feeling in being saddled with an older device as you look upon something shiny and new like the OnePlus 2 smartphone.
OnePlus has launched their new #TakeTheEdgeOff promotion for smartphone buyers who may regret pursuing The Next Big Thing these past few months and invested in a new device from Samsung. If you own one of Samsung’s flagships that launched in 2015, OnePlus will let you trade it in for a new OnePlus 2 and they will handle recycling your old Samsung device via a donation to the Hope Phones program.
Don’t think that just anyone can take advantage of this offer though. OnePlus probably anticipated smartphone users may be knocking their doors down to trade-in their latest Samsung devices to get a new OnePlus 2, so they are limiting this to a maximum of 50 winners who go through the process of signing up before the deadline on October 18th. Since those applying have to use the #TakeTheEdgeOff hashtag on social media, you can expect your timelines and feeds to explode with posts tagged in this manner.
If you really do want to try to trade-in your Samsung flagship smartphone for a OnePlus 2 64GB model in Sandstone Black, hit the source link for all the details and to submit the entry form.
