Possible Nokia Android Phones Leak with UI Displayed

nokia-android-phone-ui

We are busy at CES, but today I finally have some time to catch up on news that is not so CES. Seems that leak king, evleaks, has leaked out this image while tweeting “Android on Nokia”. We have been hearing lots of rumors that Nokia is finally going to release their very own Android powered device, and evleaks has been on top of all those rumors. The Nokia Normandy is the name being thrown around for this device, and apparently it was found out later yesterday that the device will be running Android 4.4.1 KitKat.

The Nokia UI looks rather eye-pleasing, and that fact that it will have KitKat on board makes all of our Android hearts happy. Let us know what you think about this leaked image, and let us know if you are looking forward to grabbing a Nokia Android phone.

Nokia’s Lumia Black update starts rolling out worldwide (video)

Nokia Lumia Black update compatibility

Nokia knows how to start a new year properly — it gave Americans a first shot at the Lumia Black update as 2013 came to a close, and it’s starting 2014 by rolling out the software to Lumia owners around the world. The Windows Phone 8 upgrade is reaching the Lumia 925 and 1020 first; other devices should get it in the weeks ahead. The fresh software brings common features like app folders, Bluetooth 4.0 LE support, an updated Glance screen and the unified Nokia Camera app. Some improvements depend on beefier hardware, however. You’ll need at least 1GB of RAM to use Beamer transfers or Refocus image processing, and only 1020 owners can shoot RAW photos. Whatever device you’re using, you’ll want to hit that Phone Update option in the near future — you may be in for a pleasant surprise.

Live from the Engadget CES Stage: Nokia head of imaging technologies Juha Alakarhu

Given Nokia’s hardware focus in recent years, there are few folks at the Finnish company we’d rather chat with more than Juha Alakarhu, the smartphone maker’s head of imaging technologies.

(UPDATE) @evleaks leaks more Android on Nokia, release imminent?

This morning @evleaks posted a photo with that caption “Android on Nokia ( -virtual buttons)” that could perhaps be further suggesting a Nokia device running Android is in the works.

The device pictured also appears to be a dual-sim smartphone.

Rumors began in November when @evleaks  leaked a photo of a device codenamed ”Normandy” that was said to be a low-end Android device.

This Lumia-style device, according to a report by The Verge, has “no apparent capacitive buttons for navigation” and ”supports Android applications like Skype, and other popular top apps.”

Comparing the above image to smartphones running Windows Phone, the navigation bar is nearly identical as far as the layout of the status bar icons.

This may be a heavily skinned version of Android, much like Amazon does with its Kindle tablets. If you ask me, while it was reported to have no capacitive buttons, the caption might mean “minus virtual buttons” and it appears to have one capacitive button, which is a back button. That dialer also looks like the KitKat dialer.

While @evleaks has proved accurate nearly every single time out, this one has our radar up.

UPDATE: GSMArena noted another leak of an AnTuTu test that the device, “Nokia RM-980 A110,” features a 4-inch FWVGA display (480×854 pixels), Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 5 MP rear camera and runs Android 4.4.1 KitKat.

Leak reportedly shows Nokia Normandy’s Android interface

We’ve heard a number of rumors recently about Nokia’s Normandy phone, which will supposedly ship with an Android-based operating system. Shots of the handset, with its lack of a hardware shutter trigger, capacitive buttons and LED flash, appeared back in December, and now mobile tipster @Evleaks has posted what could be the first shots of Nokia’s alternative take on Google’s open-source platform. Three leaked renders of the device shows support for dual SIMs, homescreen notifications, a dialer screen and what appears to be a custom version of Skype’s mobile app.

Nokia’s Normandy project is said to be a low-end Asha equivalent that runs a forked version of Android, meaning it won’t be associated with Google’s apps and services, similar to Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets. As we know, Nokia’s mobile business is currently awaiting the all-clear for an acquisition by Microsoft, meaning the project might never see the light of day. The leaked shots suggest Nokia has made significant progress with Normandy, but we’ll have to wait and see if the project forms part of its new owner’s future plans.

Our 2014 CES stage schedule is here and it’s awesome!

Sure, there’s a certain amount of creeping dread in the lead up to CES each year. It’s a sleep-deprived week spent elbowing our way through the packed halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The food is bad, the facilities few and far between and the hygiene practices of the tech-blogging community questionable, at best. But there are also plenty of things that make it one of the most exciting weeks of the year, not the least of which is our stage. As with the last couple of years, we’ve got a prime spot in the convention center lobby, where we’ll be speaking to some of the biggest and most innovative companies in the world of consumer electronics.

The list includes Sony, Ford, Pebble, Nokia, Leap Motion, Oculus, MakerBot, Lenovo, Samsung, AT&T and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, to name a few. You can check out the full schedule here and stay glued to our CES event hub for updates. See you on stage!

Nokia wins German injunction banning HTC Android devices

HTC One Mini

Nokia is clearly on a roll in the courtroom as of late — following lawsuit wins in the Netherlands, the US and the UK, the company has landed a German injunction banning all of HTC’s Android-based devices. The ruling lets Nokia provisionally block the sale of the One and other Google-powered hardware that allegedly infringes on a patent for peer-to-peer sharing over Bluetooth and NFC. HTC is expected to appeal the decision; Google is trying to invalidate the patent, but its move won’t come in time to avoid or delay the ban. There won’t be much else the two firms can do in the meantime. As with a similar defeat in March, HTC will have to either change features or strip them out to keep doing business.

Happy Friday my Android friends. Time for some of that ManDroid madness. The HTC One 2, or HTC M8, has “sort of” been spotted in the wild. Oppo also sent out another tweet talking about the FInd 7′s screen, and how beautiful it will be. Next year should see some pretty displays. Enjoy the show!

Nokia Lumia 1320 lands in China first

Large-phone lovers on a budget, rejoice: Nokia’s 6-inch, $339 Lumia 1320 smartphone is now available in China. That’s a bit earlier than the January 2014 time-frame it first promised, and the Finnish company said it’ll also roll out in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and other countries (likely in Europe) in the coming weeks. It packs a whopping 3,400mAh battery for the long-winded, but otherwise has middling specs: a 720p screen, dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon 400 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage and a 5-megapixel camera. Unfortunately, there’s no word of an arrival date for those in the US torn between a tablet and phone — but given the LTE bands we saw at the FCC, don’t hold your breath.

Nokia pulls Here Maps from the App Store, blames iOS 7

Nokia Here arrives at the App Store

In the wake of Maps-gate, Nokia was one of several outfits that rushed to Apple’s aid with a navigation app of its very own. A year later, however, and that same offering has been yanked from the App Store before it could send a note to its neighbors. When we asked, Nokia responded with the below quote, saying that iOS 7 harms the user experience of HERE, but users can still access the mobile edition of the service. Which is all well and good, unless you were a big fan of the app’s ability to cache offline data.

“We have made the decision to remove our HERE Maps app from the Apple App Store because recent changes to iOS 7 harm the user experience. iPhone users can continue to use the mobile web version of HERE Maps under m.here.com, offering them location needs, such as search, routing, orientation, transit information and more, all completely free of charge.”
