Six-inch Motorola phone hits the FCC looking like the new Nexus

If you believe all the rumors that’ve been floating around, Motorola’s hard at work on a new Nexus smartphone (codenamed “Shamu”) with a 6-inch screen. Well, guess what just popped in to make an appearance at the FCC? You nailed it: a Motorola smartphone with a 6-inch screen, and with support for AT&T and T-Mobile’s frequency bands to boot. As always, Motorola representatives have petitioned the FCC to keep all the really juicy bits confidential, so it’s far from a definitive nail in the Nexus rumor coffin. Still, it’s yet another piece of evidence that points to Motorola’s role in crafting Google’s latest Nexus smartphone. Why, just the other day it was spotted in Geekbench’s test database putting up some particularly strong numbers. The specifics of the radio should mean the GSM model comes first (which is really nothing new), but Verizon Wireless may be getting in on the fun come launch time, too. Bear in mind, those reports and appearance came to light within the past week — pretty soon (and if we’re lucky) there won’t be anything left to leak.

Possible Nexus 9 image leaked

nexus9

With HTC and Google’s Nexus 9 passing through FCC earlier, we now have what definitely looks like the back of the Nexus 9 tablet supposedly launching sometime later this month thanks to upleaks. The device looks very similar to the design of the earlier 2013 Nexus 7 and Nexus 5, with a dark grey matte plastic back and vertical Nexus logo.

The Nexus 9 is rumored to carry NVIDIA’s powerful new Tegra K1 “Denver” 64-bit CPU, taking full advantage of Android L’s support for 64-bit hardware. The tablet is also expected to carry either 3GB or 4GB of RAM, a 2K resolution screen, front-facing speakers and a decent rear-facing camera by the looks of the picture.

The Nexus rumor-mill is in full gear right now, stay tuned as we find out more.

Nexus 9 shows up in the flesh bearing HTC logo and matte finish

nexus 9October is going to be an exciting month, if the rumours turn out to be true. Those rumours allege that two Nexus devices will be announced sometime this month, one a smartphone and the other a tablet device. That tablet is rumoured to be called the Nexus 9, named predictably thanks to its 8.9-inch display, and today it appears we have our first glimpse of the device in the flesh. Obviously we won’t know if this is the real deal until Google officially announces the device, but we do see the tiny HTC logo at the base of the device with a Nexus logo adorning the middle of it. A matte black finish rounds out basically the only other thing we can determine from this picture of the device.

If anything, the device doesn’t appear like a HTC device at all, taking more cues, perhaps, from the Nexus 5’s matte finish. On the inside, the Nexus 9 is expected to house a NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor powering a Quad HD display with 2560×1600 resolution. Wi-Fi and LTE models are rumoured in 16GB and 32GB variants, but hopefully we’ll be hearing more about this from Google officially in the not too distant future.

Nexus 6 vs Nexus 5 size comparison, as well as other major flagship devices

Nexus 6 vs Nexus 5 size comparisonThe Nexus 6 is now an inevitable release in the future, with only the release date in question. However, the main concern for the device isn’t when it’s going to release, but how big is it really. We know it has a 5.9-inch display, which for many sounds far too big, but how does that shape up to some of the devices we already know, particularly the Nexus 5, it’s soon-to-be predecessor? Thanks to Canoopsy, we have a great video comparing the sizes of different flagship devices to the Nexus 6, in particular a Nexus 6 vs Nexus 5 size comparison which really shows the Nexus 6′s size difference. Check it out below:

While it was always going to be much bigger than the Nexus 5, some of the other comparisons of the Nexus 6 show some interesting results. In particular, I was surprised to see that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is almost exactly the same size as the Nexus 6 – with a 5.7-inch display, it clearly makes less efficient use of its front side real-estate with the Nexus 6 employing some slim bezels to help keep the size down. There’s not all that much to be surprised about here – it’s going to be a big phone – even if some of the comparisons are surprising, but it’s nice that we can see them compared as accurately as possible.

What do you think about the Nexus 6 vs Nexus 5 size comparison? Which size comparison had you most surprised? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Motorola Nexus 6 spotted in the wild

nexus6_androidpolice

We recently published a gallery of photos for the upcoming Motorola Nexus 6; however, all of these were renders because there has not been a quality photo of the actual device itself. That is, until today. The team over at Android Police has received some photos from an anonymous tipster that claim to show someone using the Nexus 6 out in public.

There is a view from both the left and right side of the device. These pictures give us a good idea of how large this 5.9″ behemoth will be, and it does not appear to be that large. For such a large phone, the user seems to be handling it relatively easily with just one hand. Since there is nothing to compare the phone to, this does not mean that the Nexus 6 will be small as the user could just have very large hands. However, it does give us hope that Motorola has been able to squeeze a 5.9″ display into a reasonable form factor. Although the majority of the phone is obscured by a hand or the case, we can still compare some features to what we have seen in leaks. The headphone jack appears in the middle of the phone and the navigation buttons appear smaller which both line up with the earlier photos and renders. The power and volume buttons are also located at the middle of the phone which shows just how large this phone will be. The front-facing speakers are also visible in both photos. While there is no way to verify the device, all signs say that you are looking at the next Nexus 6 from Motorola. Hopefully we will see the entire phone sometime within the next month or so.

What do you think of these new pictures of the Nexus 6? Tell us in the comments!

Moto Nexus 6 leaks with slew of details

Moto Nexus 6

A few days ago we reported about some details of the upcoming Motorola Nexus 6 from 9to5Google. This morning we reported on a leaked picture of the Nexus 6 next to a LG G3. Now, we have details confirming some of the specs we had before, while also learning some new ones from Android Police.

Android Police says they can confirm that the next device from Google will be a 5.9″ screen device called the Nexus 6. It will have a 3,200 mAh battery, with a QHD screen bringing a whopping 496 ppi, a 13 MP camera with OIS and the dual-flash ring that’s on the new Moto X, and a 2 MP camera on the front, as we reported before.

What’s new, however, is confirmation of a few things. It will indeed be a larger Moto X (2014) confirming the leaked photo from this morning. It will have an aluminum frame as well, and will have the new Moto X’s fast charging capabilities (15 minutes of charging gives 8 hours battery life). Also, it will have front facing stereo speakers. The version of Android will be 5.0 (if there was still any doubt), and it seems there will be some refreshed icons, along with a different messaging app icon (different from hangouts?), and new Wi-Fi, battery, and signal icons at the top that are now solid rather than with breaks.

They give this rumor a 9/10, which is solid for a rumor from Android Police. Along with these details, they can’t necessarily confirm the existence of another, smaller Nexus device.

What do you think? Sound like some great specs, or still too large to even consider?

The extended Nexus family: Google’s golden Android standard

Google’s Nexus line has long stood as the company’s ideal vision of its widely adopted, open-source Android operating system. The devices, be they smartphones, tablets or even one-off media streamers, are built in conjunction with select hardware partners and represent an ideal marriage of tech specs with an unadulterated version of Android. It’s Google’s way of dealing with fragmentation (read: skinned versions) in the mobile OS market it created; a reference mark for manufacturers to aspire to, so to speak.

On the tail of the original Android handset’s sixth anniversary and in the run-up to whatever new Nexuses come next, we take a look back at the hardware path that’s been Google’s gold standard for Android.

New Moto Nexus details come to light with leaked render

shamufinal22

Yesterday we reported a rumor from Android Authority that talked about the release dates of upcoming Nexus devices and Android L. The other day we discussed an article from WSJ outlining an upcoming tablet from HTC. Today, we bring to you an exclusive from 9to5Google giving details about the Moto Nexus device that’s been rumored about for months now.

They say that they can confirm that this device will indeed be a phablet with a huge 5.92″ screen, and essentially will look like a stretched out Moto X (2014). Other specs they give are a QHD screen (2560 X 1440, 498 PPI), a 3,200 mAh battery, a 13 MP camera with 4K UHD recording capabilities on the back, 2 MP on the front, a Snapdragon 805 processor, 3 GB of RAM, and at least one storage option of 32 GB.

They do say while they are sure this is smartphone that will come out, they can’t necessarily say it’s not the only smartphone that will come from Google this year, and that there’s a likelihood that a 5.2″ device will come out.

Stay tuned as the release of these Nexus devices draws nearer, we’ll report any new details that emerge.
