AT&T Hints at Imminent Nexus 6 Release

att_logoThe Nexus is approaching! AT&Ts website has leaked news about the new device, notably that it will be available directly through the carrier and supposedly priced at $50 on-contract.

The information takes some looking for to be able to see, though. When you look at the page for the LG G3 Vigor, in the sidebar, there sits the Motorola Nexus 6. Don’t get too excited: the link will only take you to other Motorola phones already on the network.

The photo in the box is also the LG Vista, which will hopefully change after the release date tomorrow. *Fingers Crossed.* Hopefully the price doesn’t change, though. If you want to enter into a contract with the death star, it’d be better to enter into it with an extra $150 in your pocket, compared to the $200 price point for most flagships.

New Android ad campaign hints at upcoming Nexus devices

android

The inexorable announcement of the next round of Nexus devices and Android L is drawing ever nearer, as Google has released a slew of new ads promoting Android.

This video above shows an animated version of the rumored Nexus 6. It seems to look like a Moto X (2014) and is obviously quite large. Google is seemingly saying that it doesn’t matter if it’s large, hence “be together. not the same.”

It’s hard to notice, but it’s possible that this video shows the Nexus 9, held by one of the people on the left.

This video doesn’t show any devices explicitly, but it’s the third ad in this series.

The trend in the past few years has been for Google to announce the next Nexus and version of Android in October, so we can say pretty firmly that an announcement is imminent. Whether it’s October 15 (tomorrow) or later in the month can’t be for sure, though rumors seem to be pointing to the former.

We also have a gallery of the Nexus 6 here, and earlier this morning we reported on another render from the supposedly retired (though I’m not complaining) @evleaks here.

Are you excited for this eminent announcement? I definitely am!

Forbes: Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Android L due October 15

android

October should just be dubbed “Nexus month”, as even if Google doesn’t announce a new Nexus at the beginning of the month, the internet blows up with rumors, reports, leaks, and other news about them anyways, and once they do announce it, the rest of the month (or next few months) is spent looking at and analyzing any and everything Google announced.

Anyways, Forbes has reported that “a source close to Google” has confirmed that the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Android L will be announced tomorrow via a blog post. The writer said originally Google was going to make an event out of it, eventually opting for a web announcement because they’re still fine tuning Android L.

The Nexus 9 will be available for pre-order on October 17th, and available to purchase on November 3rd, they say this is subject to change. The 16 GB variant will cost $399, while a 32 GB LTE version will cost $499, and apparently they will have expandable memory, which I’m sure will be praised by Android enthusiasts.

He also confirms specs: 8.9-inch 2048×1440 display, 480 grams, a 64-bit dual-core processor, an Nvidia Kepler GPU and a 8MP rear-facing camera and 3MP front-facing camera. It will have a “brushed-aluminum” frame rather than an all metal design. It will also have HTC’s boomsound and front-facing speakers.

There will also be an “origami” case, which apparently can be folded however you’d like in order to stand up or prop up the device.

We reported on this date and various specs a few times before.

Earlier today we’ve had a few reports about the Nexus 6 as well, here and a report about the newest android campaign here.

I’m starting to be convinced that this is happening. At this point if there isn’t an announcement tomorrow, I’ll be disappointed… So, while we feel confident about all this, take it all with a grain of salt.

Are you ready for the next round of Nexus devices and Android?

Here’s what Google’s giant Nexus 6 phone (probably) looks like

Google's giant Nexus smartphone

You may have already seen concepts and sketchy photos of Google’s long-fabled 6-inch Nexus, but it now looks like the final veil of secrecy has been removed from this future Android flagship. Evan Blass (aka @evleaks) has posted an apparent leaked press image for the new smartphone that supports many of the existing rumors. The massive screen full of Android L imagery is likely the biggest giveaway, but the device also has the Moto X-style grilles and side trim that many have been expecting from the reportedly Motorola-made device. There aren’t any new hints as to when this supersized hardware would arrive, and it’s still not completely certain that this is what you’ll eventually hold in your hands. However, Google’s tendency to unveil new Nexus gear around October or November suggests that you won’t have very long to wait.

First official Nexus 6 press render leaked courtesy of @evleaks

nexus-6

While the Nexus 6 has been caught in the wild, rendered by eager journalists, and shown dwarfing the LG G3 in size, famed leaker @evleaks has temporarily come out of retirement to bring us the first press render of the Nexus 6 from Motorola themselves. It looks exactly as we’ve heard it described in the past, which isn’t a disappointment by any means, the Nexus 6 is shaping up to be an excellent device both in specs and design.

Considering @evleaks has a pretty solid track record and the photo matches the rumored design, its safe to say we just caught our first official glimpse of the hotly anticipated Nexus 6. The rumored specs feature a 5.9-inch QUD display, a Snapdragon 805 supplemented by an Adreno 420 GPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a substantial 3,300mAh battery. With any luck the included 12-megapixel camera (with 4K support) will be better than past Nexus offerings. Hit the comments with your thoughts on the upcoming device.

Nexus 9 due October 15, report says

leaked-nexus-9

As we get closer to the time Google announces Android L, more and more rumors and reports come out about the upcoming Nexus devices, or the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. Earlier this morning we reported about an article from WSJ confirming rumors of the Nexus 6. A couple of days ago, an HTC rep confirmed that the Nexus 9 exists and is coming. Now, we seem to have some details about a possible announcement and launch date for the Nexus 9 (and presumably the Nexus 6 and Android L as well).

Bright side of news on Thursday reported that their sources confirm that the Nexus 9 will be announced this month, available for pre-order on October 15th, and then available (and most likely shipped) on November 3. They also confirm (as previously thought) that it will be using a NVIDIA Tegra K1 SoC. However, it isn’t clear if they will use the regular chip seen in other devices, or if it will be a new 64-bit version.

They also confirm that it will cost $399, which they say makes it a more premium device since the Nexus 7 is cheaper at $229. However, if you recall the Nexus 10 released starting at $399, and was considered cheap for its size and features. Considering a Nexus 9 would be closer to that, it makes sense to me. I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.

The other interesting part of the report is it claims that the Nexus 9 will not be exclusive to the Play Store, but will be sold to many other retailers. This indeed would be an interesting move on Google’s part, and would mean they are more serious about selling devices this time around.

Stay tuned for more updates about the Nexus devices.

What do you think about a $399 price tag on a 9″ tablet? Too much for a Nexus device, or just about right?

WSJ: 5.9-inch Nexus 6 to launch this month

nexus6_androidpolice

Last week we reported on a leak of Nexus 6 details, which said it would have a 5.9″ QHD screen, a 3,200 mAh battery, a 13 MP camera with OIS, a 2 MP shooter on the front, fast-charging capabilities, and essentially be a stretched out Moto X (2014). We also reported on some alleged photos of the device spotted in the wild. Good news Googlers: the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has pretty much confirmed these rumors.

The WSJ says that “three people familiar with the situation” that Google expects to release the Nexus 6 this month. They also go on to talk about its screen, maker, and that the next version of Android will be released with it. Things we pretty much know at this point, but just confirming these things more than anything.

I’m still interested to see how people will accept such a massive phone. The phablet market has definitely grown, which WSJ talks about in their article, and was proven by Apple finally making the switch to a bigger screen. Nevertheless, even Samsung’s newest Note is 5.7″, but has software and a stylus to make it easier to use. It will be interesting to see what happens with the release of this device, because while Google has never had huge numbers in its Nexus sales (certainly not compared to Apple or Samsung), but they have sold out several times on their last couple of phones, and manufacturers have taken cues from Google on how to build their flagships based on Nexus phones. If nothings else, we can be excited for the release of the beautiful looking Android L.

What do you think of all this? Will the Nexus 6 sell well, or will its size just be overkill?

To check out all the photos (rendered and real) that we currently have of the Nexus 6, check out this post.

[Poll] Yes or No?: Will you get the Motorola Nexus 6

Will you get the Motorola Nexus 6It seems like an inevitability that the Motorola Nexus 6 is going to be announced, possibly as early as this month, however it seems like the arguments for and against the device are still raging. Phablets have polarized the tech community like few other devices have in recent times with people either hating the idea of them or the converted (and growing) masses who will never go back to a ‘small’ screened device, and the 5.9-inch Nexus 6 appears no different, perhaps even more so since it is part of Google‘s vigorously worshipped Nexus line. The device definitely isn’t going to be a slouch given it’s rumoured to be powered by a Snapdragon 805 and 3GB RAM, all behind a glorious Quad HD display. Of course, this will all be secondary to the release of Android L, Google’s biggest makeover of the operating system’s user interface in a long time. The size, though, is apparently overshadowing all of this for quite a few people.

Arguments aside, what we really want to know is how many of you are actually going to get a Motorola Nexus 6 whenever it is announced in the next month or so, so leave an answer in the poll below, of if so inclined, leave a comment down below.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

Whichever side of the fence you sit on, we’d love to hear from you as we think it is a truly curious strategy from Google to release such a large device even by phablet’s standards.

HTC all but officially announces Nexus 9

leaked-nexus-9

The Nexus 9 has been in the rumor mill for months now, nevertheless we’ve been able to gather that it’s coming, from a leaked photo, to a FCC filing, and a NVIDIA legal document leak. Today however, we have some news that all but officially confirms the arrival of the Nexus 9.

Jeff Tong, HTC’s President of North Asia, announced today at a press briefing in New York that the Nexus 9 is HTC’s “commitment” to returning to the tablet market. It’s been three years since HTC has produced a tablet, so it will be interesting to see them reemerge into this space in the mobile market.

Tong made no mention of a release date or specs, however we’ve reported rumors of an October 16 release date. That could possibly mean the release of Android L too, so stay tuned for more updates as we hear them.

Excited for the Nexus 9?

Google promises a fix to the Nexus 5 ‘mm-qcamera-daemon’ CPU bug

cpu bug

If you own a Nexus 5 then you may have run into a very strange bug that involves the ‘mm-qcamera-daemon’ bug which takes up CPU and consequently drains the battery.

According to the Google issue tracker, the particular bug that tracks this issue as just been marked as resolved in a future release, indicating it should be fixed when Android L comes out.

This only affects the Nexus 5 AOSP so if you’re seeing this issue on other devices then it won’t be fixed by this particular bug and needs raising with the developer in question.
