Nexus 6 pre-orders to begin October 29

nexus6_alternating_700w

Details surrounding the ordering status of the Nexus 6 was somewhat of a mystery following the Google event a few days ago, but it seems the Moto X inspired device has finally gotten a pre-order date.

For those wanting to order the Nexus 6, you will be able to do so as of October 29th from the Google Play Store. The 5.96″ 2560 x 1440 QHD device is the next iteration from the hugely popular Nexus 5, featuring a Quad core Krait 450 CPU 2.7 GHz processor and 3GB of RAM, this is definitely a power house.

If you’re on the fence about pre-ordering the Nexus 6, we compared it against the latest Apple iPhone 6 Plus to see how it stacks up.

Will you be pre-ordering the Nexus 6?

Video of Nexus 6 compared to Note 4 appears

nexus6note4

Eager as we are to see the Nexus 6 outside of commercial renders and in real life? Today’s your lucky day. Not only do we see the Nexus 6 in this video, but it’s briefly compared to the Galaxy Note 4 as well.

These two phone are quite similar when it comes to specs, with both including quad-HD displays, latest Snapdragon 805 chips, 3GB of RAM and more. You an check out a great comparison article here. The Galaxy Note 4 is available in all major retailers today while the Nexus 6 will go on sale for retailers in early November, most likely with the same price tag of $299 on contract.

It’s worth noting that the Nexus 6 is only a hair larger than the Note 4 in this video, while having a .2 inch bigger screen. Hopefully we see more hands on videos of the device in the coming days.

Were OEMs to blame for Android Silver never coming to fruition?

Nexus-6-splashBack in May, we saw news leak from the now retired evleaks that suggested that Google was working on a program for premium Android devices known as Android Silver. The program would offer a pure Google designed Android experience on next-gen hardware and all for a premium price. The program would have been something offered on all the majors carriers, however, about a month before the release of the Nexus 6, word spread that the unconfirmed program was scrapped and it’s possible that the major carriers were to blame.

Re/code learned that Google struggled to convince OEMs to get onboard with the program.

“The company wanted to promote a less-customizable version of the OS that would make it easier for app developers to create one version of its software for the Android devices, instead of having to make many versions for different flavors of Android,”Re/code wrote. “The program was shelved after lukewarm interest from device makers that didn’t want to share its branding with another company or employ such a restricted version of the software.”

According to other reports, Google’s licensing agreements for Android have become tougher for OEMs that push its online services but it looks like Google couldn’t push forward with Silver. Google’s VP of engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer didn’t comment on Silver in a recent interview, rather dodged the unconfirmed program by saying that the “Nexus brand of devices will continue well into the future.” While Google is tightening the reigns on some aspects of Android it looks like the search giant may loosen its grasp on certain aspects.

As was previously stated, Google is thinking about opening up Android Wear, TV, and Auto for customizations. That is, as soon as Google hammers out the basics of each of the respective platforms.

That said, it’s kind of easy writing off a program that never existed. Unlike previous Nexus devices — that skimped in a few areas to cut cost — the new Nexus 6 looks to to be what Android Silver could have been; a premium device with next-gen hardware and a pure Google experience. Android Silver never existed, maybe OEMs weren’t onboard, maybe Google scraped the program and integrated the idea into making the new Nexus. One thing’s for certain, the program that never existed, continues to not do so.

Play Music gets a Material Design makeover in Nexus 4 port

google-music-md-1As we edge closer to the Nov. 3 release of Android 5.0 Lollipop for WiFi devices, we’re going to start seeing more and more Google apps go Material Design. One app, everyone’s been hoping to see in material is Google Play Music. Over the weekend, a port of the developer preview for the Nexus 4 was created and in it, came material-designed Play Music. Well the gents over at Droid-Life were able to take a look at it, this past weekend.

As we can see from the images Google Play Music gets a little prettier in its redesign. Play Music 5.6.1640 incorporates the design guidelines and it looks great. Google+ user, Brandon Lall, was able to pull and create a gif of Google Play Music in action.

While the APKs are available, they’re not straight from Google so we recommend you exercise caution when/if you install them. That being said. Google Play Music should get the Material Design makeover sometime here in the next two weeks. Until then, we’ll just have to patiently wait.

Here’s every device getting Android 5.0 Lollipop so far

Motorola's examples of phones getting Android 5.0 Lollipop

If you’re a die-hard Android fan, you’re probably champing at the bit waiting for that Lollipop upgrade — when will you get it? Are you going to get it? Thankfully for you, a number of companies have already promised to upgrade some of their devices to this candy-flavored OS. Google’s Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10 models are naturally first in line, as are Android One and Google Play Edition hardware; its outgoing Motorola brand is equally on top of things with plans to patch the Moto E, G and X alongside Verizon’s Droid Mini, Maxx and Ultra. HTC and OnePlus don’t have full details, but they’re both pledging to give their recent flagships a taste of Lollipop within 90 days of receiving finished code. NVIDIA and Sony, meanwhile, are being vague. While they’re respectively teasing plans to update the Shield Tablet and the Xperia Z series, they won’t say when just yet.

As for other manufacturers? Well, don’t hold your breath. LG tells TechRadar that it has nothing to say on “if / when” Lollipop will reach the G3, let alone older gear. The upgrade is likely coming, but the statement is far from reassuring. Mum’s the word from Samsung as well, although leaks show that a Lollipopped version of TouchWiz is in the works. It’s also reasonable to expect that relatively large brands like Acer, ASUS, Huawei and Xiaomi are on deck — just don’t be shocked if their older devices don’t make the cut.

Lollipop’s keyboard can now be installed on any Android device without root

Android-5.0-Lollipop

If you’re hankering for a taste of Android L but don’t have a Nexus device to install the SDK on, you can check out its awesome new keyboard, which is now available for almost any Android-powered device running Ice Cream Sandwich or later.

A third-party developer has extracted the keyboard APK from an official Android L developer preview build and made it available to download from a secure file sharing website. It’s free, has no ads, and does not require root access.

Hit the break for the download link and instructions on how to install the file on your smartphone/tablet.

Installing the keyboard is easy. Simply navigate to this page, tap the download button and click install when you’re prompted to do so. You may have to allow installations from third-party sources if you haven’t already. To do this head into settings, then security and check the box entitled ‘Unknown sources’ and you’re good to go.

If you happen to run into any issues along the way do be sure to drop a comment in the section below, and we’ll do our very best to get you back on track.

Google’s Nexus Player gets FCC approval, right on cue

Google Nexus Player at the FCC

Well, that didn’t take long. Just a couple of days after Google stopped pre-orders of the Nexus Player while it waited for the FCC’s all-clear, its Android TV puck has received approval. There aren’t any surprises in the regulatory filing, but it should let you both pre-order the WiFi media hub soon and (hopefully) get it around that originally promised November 3rd release date. If you were worried that you’d have to make do with a Chromecast for a little while longer, you can relax.

Google freezes Nexus Player orders while it waits for US approval

Google Nexus Player

If you were dead set on ordering the Nexus Player this weekend, you’re about to be disappointed. Google has quietly halted pre-orders of its Android TV media hub because it has “not been approved” by the FCC — the company would be in trouble with US regulators if it took your hard-earned dollars for something it can’t ship. There aren’t any hints as to when the Nexus Player will get the all-clear, but you can be sure that we’ll keep our eyes peeled. Hopefully, the approval arrives before November 3rd so that you can get that Android TV set-top box on time.

Google’s Nexus Player delayed by FCC, out of stock in Google Play

nexus player out of stock

Whilst the Nexus 9 went up for pre-order as expected, you may have noticed that the Nexus Player still isn’t available and is showing as out of stock on the Google Play Store.

Many thought the device simply sold out extremely quickly, but as it turns out the device has not been approved yet by the FCC and so is prohibited from being on sale.

This device has not been approved by the Federal Communications Commission.
It is not for sale until approval of the FCC has been obtained.

There’s no indication yet as to when the Nexus Player will be back on sale again, but what this space.

Nexus 6 is basically Android Silver

silver_nexus

‘Nexmas 2014′ has come and gone, and the previous leaks all seemed to be correct… surprisingly. I truly did not believe that “Shamu” would actually be the Nexus 6. And if it was, I was really expecting a smaller 5.2″ variant to be announced as well. So when the official announcements were live, I was a bit thrown off by how different the Nexus program is this year. Very different indeed.

Earlier this year, a mysterious program called Android Silver was being tossed around news sites, with reporters claiming it would replace the Nexus program entirely. Android Silver was rumored to bring a very premium device or set of devices with stock android to be sold through carriers at a premium price. There’s a lot of Android enthusiasts out there like me who didn’t want to see this happen because of the love for Nexus phones, so I didn’t want to believe it. The rumors began to fade though throughout the year, and eventually it was reported that Android Silver didn’t quite make it past the discussion board as one of the heads of the project left.

I thought that would’ve ended the possibility of Android Silver once and for all, and honestly I was happy about that. I love Nexus phones not only for stock Android, but the high-end hardware and $350 price tag felt perfect to me, even if there were always a couple cut corners. But the year is 2014, and Google’s got a new vision for Android.

Silver….

Everything about the Nexus 6 lines up with what Android Silver was rumored to be. It is a 100% premium device that did not skip anything. Moto X quality build with a metal frame, 2K AMOLED display, Snapdragon 805 chip, 3GB RAM, dual front-facing speakers, big battery… It’s a dream phone. Obviously the monstrous size of it is a turn off for many, myself included, but maybe in the future I’ll warm up to it once I actually hold it. Back to the topic though, Android Silver also included the fact that the phone will be carried by all carriers. The Nexus 6 is heading to all major carriers in the US in November, most likely with an on contract price of $199-299.

silver_phone

Oh hey, more silver!

The Nexus 6 is basically a high-end phablet by Motorola with the Nexus name on it and a new version of Android on it. I have no complaints about this really, I’ve always wanted to see a perfect high-end Nexus phone. The price is just what scares me a little.

silver_google

So much silver!!!

I’ve seen theories around the internet that the Nexus phone in 2015 will be a 5.2 inch model and sort of like an updated Nexus 5. In all honesty, the Nexus 5 is still a champ when it comes to specs and could go another year before a refreshment is necessary. The theory is that Google will alternate between a new Nexus 5 and a new Nexus 6 phablet every year. Next year we will also see a new Nexus 7 instead of a Nexus 9. It’s an interesting theory, and it’s one I can definitely see happening. There’s no way the Nexus 5 will be Google’s last “one-handed” Nexus phone.

What do you guys think? Are you put off by Google ditching the idea of an affordable new Nexus phone in favor of this giant, or are you stoked to get your hands on the beauty that is the Nexus 6?
