Android Lollipop memory leak issue marked as “FutureRelease”, could appear in next software update

Although Android Lollipop is a huge step forward in many ways for the Android platform, this latest update seems to have had no shortage of issues being reported. Unfortunately, many of these issues seem to manifest the worst on Nexus devices, if exclusively, perhaps because they are the most numerously updated devices at the moment. The worst […]

Android Lollipop afflicted with memory leak bug, but Google is working on a fix

android_lollipop_tweetLollipop is the latest and greatest version of Android from Google, but like all new software, there are a few bugs. The newest release has already had a few issues (that were promptly fixed) but now it looks like some Nexus devices are being bogged down with a memory leak on Android 5.0.1.

The issue causes the Android system to use up to over 1 GB of RAM instead of the typical 500 MB, so you’ll see tons of apps being force closed and home screen redraws. It’s not a devastating glitch, but it’s enough to be pretty annoying, especially if you like to use tons of apps at once.

Fortunately, it looks like Google has found a solution and is working on implementing it. However, there’s no word on just when the fix will get pushed out to Nexus devices, but whenever you see the next incremental update you can bet the memory leak will have been addressed.

Chainfire releases CF-Auto-Roots for all Nexus devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop

Lollipop Root

The all-new Android operating system, 5.0 Lollipop, was officially released on November 3rd and it has already been rooted. While rooting has been available for Nexus devices running Lollipop ever since the developer preview, it hasn’t been easy… until now.

XDA Senior Recognized Developer Chainfire, has already updated his famous CF-Auto-Root downloads to include an Android 5.0 root for the entire Nexus line. That means the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013), Nexus 9, and Nexus 10 devices running 5.0 can easily be rooted.

For those of you who don’t know what CF-Auto-Root is, it is essentially the go-to method for beginners who are not well-versed in rooting. You can check out the officially CF-Auto-Root page here.

CF-Auto Root updated for Android Lollipop on Nexus devices

android_lollipop_tweet

Want a quick way to root your Nexus device?

In the past, one such option has been CF-Auto Root — until now, that option hasn’t been available for Lollipop users.

But with a recent update by XDA Senior Recognized Developer Chainfire, Nexus devices running Android 5.0 can join in on the fun. Hit the break for details:

The included devices are as follows:

  • Nexus 4
  • Nexus 5
  • Nexus 7 (2012)
  • Nexus 7 (2013)
  • Nexus 9
  • Nexus 10

Here’s an official changelog of sorts:

  • The new variants of CFAR have the SuperSU ZIP embedded
  • A second included ZIP (if on Lollipop or newer) patches the current kernel to run SuperSU at boot
  • Current CFARs have SuperSU v2.20 which is not currently available elsewhere and only has CFAR compatibility

For more, hit the source link.

Want the Nexus 6 from Sprint? Carrier only offering one configuration

nexus_6_cloud_white_back

The Nexus 6 in all of its color and storage options is available from Google Play. No matter what carrier you have, Google Play’s Nexus 6 will be supported with an appropriate SIM card. Carriers in the United States, though, will be selling the device themselves. Prospective buyers just won’t see the same amount of configurations on a carrier-by-carrier basis. Sprint clarified today that it would only offer the Midnight Blue model with 32GB of storage. Want 16GB? Or do you want Cloud White? You cannot have either one if purchasing through Sprint.

So, again, the Play Store will offer exactly what you want because carriers decide to make odd choices.

Leaked T-Mobile document suggests that Nexus 6 will only be available at 300 stores nationwide

Nexus 6

The Google Nexus 6 has been one of the hardest devices to obtain this year. Although it hasn’t been officially released, pre-orders commenced on October 29th through the Google Play Store and have since sold out… not once, but twice. Not only did the Google Play Store run out of inventory, the Motorola online store sold out as well.

There has been a glimmer of hope for some Nexus die-hards through T-Mobile (myself included). An earlier leaked document suggested that the magenta carrier would launch the Nexus 6 on November 12th. This has since been confirmed through calls we made to T-Mobile.

Unfortunately, it seems that while they will indeed launch the Nexus 6 this Wednesday, not all stores will get the device. The document (which can be seen below) came courtesy of the XDA forums. It shows that over 1800 stores nationwide will get a demo unit of the Nexus 6, whereas only 300 stores will actually have stock to sell.

It is unknown if this document is legitimate, but we will definitely find out soon.

Google releases Lollipop guide in Google Play Books

android_lollipop_qsg_large

This is a title that will probably be more helpful for smartphone owners who are starting off with their first Android device, but long-time Android users may want to check it out as well. Google has released a Quick Start Guide for Android 5.0 Lollipop via Google Play Books. Although the guide specifically targets Nexus and Google Play Edition devices that will be getting Lollipop, it may still be useful for other devices as well.

If you are interested in grabbing the Quick Start Guide and want to give it a look over, just use one of the download links below. The guide is free, but you have to have a Google Wallet account setup and configured for use with Google Play.

Moto X 2014 gets Limited Lollipop Soak Test

SAMSUNG CSCGoogle seems to be dropping the ball this time around with its Nexus line, suffering from rollout delays with its Nexus 5 and 7, but Motorola is picking up the slack and surging ahead in the race to offer quick updates. Motorola has started soak tests with Lollipop on the Moto X 2014 already, beating all other competitors, including the source of the software itself: Google.

For those of you that own the Moto X, but have yet to receive your update, follow the link below to find an OTA mirror and get the software onto your phone from there. However, as a forewarning, the device must have never been rooted in order for it to work.

Nexus 6 gets ready to drop in 12 more countries, should be coming before Christmas

Nexus 6While the saga of limited availability continues in the US, the rest of the world is wondering when they’ll even be able to pre-order the Nexus 6. As it turns out, it could be quite soon. Google has added an additional 12 countries to join the US on the “Country availability” page on their support website which includes the likes of Australia, the UK, and Sweden. If you happen to reside in one of these countries, you should be able to see the Nexus 6 page on Google Play now which should simply have “Coming Soon” emblazoned below the localized pricing of the Nexus 6 – when this will change to allow you to actually buy the phone is anyone’s guess.

When we reached out to Google about the availability of the devices (here I used Australia as an example), they were careful not to give a specific timeline for when the devices would become available, however did specify that the devices would be available before Christmas. Whether this means devices could be received by Christmas remains to be seen, but I wouldn’t hold my breath in case more supply issues hit these other markets as well.

The full list of countries includes:

  • Australia
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • India
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Netherlands
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom

What do you think about the availability of the Nexus 6? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
