Google’s likely Nexus/Android event is happening September 29th
Google just sent over an invite for “some tasty new treats and much s’more” September 29th in San Francisco. It didn’t say what will be revealed but based on the timing, we’re thinking Android Marshmallow release, plus new hardware in the Nexus and Chromecast families? Recent leaks have pointed to Nexus phones from both LG and Huawei, while the Chromecast family may be expanding and getting rounder. Amazon and Apple debuted new devices for the TV this month, and we can’t see the folks at Google/Alphabet letting that go without a response. Whatever desserts Google is bringing, we’ll be there at 12PM ET / 9AM PT on September 29th to find out.

Google’s next phones will reportedly be the Nexus 5X and 6P
We’ve seen a few snapshots of the upcoming Nexus phones and now we may have an idea what they’ll be called. Droid Life reports that the pair of Google phones, one made by LG and the other by Huawei, will carry the labels of Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P (yes, six pee), respectively. The LG device is said to house a 5.2-inch display while the Huawei handset is rumored to carry a 5.7-inch inch screen, hence the 5 and 6 designations. We won’t have to wait too long to find out, though, as reports indicate that Google is hosting event on September 29th where the duo is expected to be revealed alongside a new Chromecast. And, of course, a look at the latest version of Android Marshmallow. Hopefully we’ll also find out what Huawei has tucked under that camera hump, too.

Google will reportedly launch new phones as Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P
There have been plenty of leaks of the new Huawei and LG manufactured Nexus devices and now we seemingly have a solid name to put towards the leaks. According to a source, the new Nexus devices will be called the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.
We’ve heard the Nexus 5X before, and it was thought to just be an internal codename, but it would appear that it is actually the final name for the LG Nexus. As for the Huawei variant, which is to be the bigger of the two devices, it will be known as the Nexus 6P.
Pre-release leaks are always to be taken with a pinch of salt, but with an announcement date pegged to be at the end of the month (September 29), we probably won’t have much time to wait until we see the new Nexus devices for sure.
Check out everything we know about the Nexus 5 (2015) thus far and then catch up with everything we know about the Nexus 6 (2015), too.

AG Picks: The best Android phone you can buy today (September 2015)
As we get out of summer and head into the autumn season we’re at an important time of the year. Specifically, a number of key smartphones have recently launched and customers have quite a selection to choose from.
Picking the right device isn’t exactly easy, especially when most of today’s phones can be had across multiple carriers. Some of us try as hard as we can to future-proof ourselves and stay ahead of the curve with high-end models. Others, care less about tomorrow and just want a kick-ass handset, no matter the price.
We here at AndroidGuys like to think there is some crossover between those two categories, particularly among the upper echelon of Android smartphones. Sometimes you can actually end up with something that lasts for years and doesn’t break the bank in the process. In other words, cost isn’t indicative of experience.
We conducted an internal poll among the team, anonymously collecting our choices for the top smartphones of September. The criteria was simple: pick the best, and second-best phone you can purchase today. With more than a dozen of us chiming in – some are self-admitted brand loyalists – we reached a pretty clear consensus.
Here are those results, with some details as to why they were selected. In short, these are the three best Android phones you can buy today.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5
Nearly every single one of us picked the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 as the best or second-best phone on the market. Why? It’s gorgeous, sleek, and features some incredible specifications.
You’d have to see one of these in person to really appreciate the beauty in the design. Throw in a killer display, wireless charging, a smarter stylus, and the latest version of Android, and you have one attractive smartphone.
You can pick one of these up from just about any wireless carrier around, however, it doesn’t come cheaply. We’d like to see the price drop just a smidge but we were on board anyhow. If you’re looking to score a top phone this coming holiday season, keep your eyes peeled for some discounts and promotions.
Motorola X Pure Edition
How can you argue with a phone that has this much hardware with a price that’s almost half that of other top flagships? Even when compared to the aforementioned Galaxy Note 5, it comes out on top in some areas – if only on paper.
The 21-megapixel rear camera is the best Motorola has offered in a phone thus far. The nearly stock Android experience ensures quick updates and a bloat-free software package. The level of customization and configuration through MotoMaker is unparalleled. Are you picking up what we’re putting down, here? You won’t find this much bang, or support, for the buck from a top-tier brand such as Motorola. The Motorola Moto X Pure Edition should be considered for your next phone.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+
As an almost identical counterpart to the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, this one trades out the stylus in favor of two edge-displays that wrap and taper.
Not only does this screen look and feel incredibly awesome, it adds extra capabilities in the process. Want an at-a-glance view of time, messages, or other notifications? You’ll find that here. Want quick access to contacts without having to create shortcuts or icons? Bingo.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ is virtually swappable for first place and almost beat out the Motorola for second place. As a testament to the two Samsung models here, our team has a few staffers who tend to judge its brand harshly.
Honorable Mentions
Other smartphones placing high on our chart this month include the Nexus 6, LG G4, and OnePlus 2.
Your pick
What phone do you have your eye on? Is it one of these or is there something else you’re considering? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below, so please take a moment to share your opinion.

Honda’s 2016 Civic will come with support for Android Auto

Honda is no stranger to Android Auto, as the car manufacturer just recently announced its 2016 Accord would come equipped with Google’s automobile platform. Honda isn’t stopping there, though, as it has just revealed that both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay would be supported in the 2016 Civic. Just like the 2016 Accord, the new Civic will come with a built-in 7.0-inch high-definition Display Audio touchscreen, which will allow drivers to take advantage of either platform depending on what type of phone is plugged in.
Just like with any other vehicle running Android Auto, you’ll need a smartphone running Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher. Once the setup process is complete, you can utilize features such as navigation with Google Maps, quick and easy access to your favorite music or podcasting applications, and even use your voice to quickly access Google Now.

Nexus 5X leak reveals mint color
Some new images that leaked claiming to show the LG version of the upcoming Nexus 5 device, believed to be the Nexus 5X, appear to reveal a new color that will join black and white. Although the images make it a little hard to tell just how vivid the color will be, it looks like the Nexus 5X will be available in a color called “Tennis Court Mint” and appears to be a pale teal or turquoise color.
The back cover appears as one might expect, with the LG and Nexus logos visible. Sources have noted the front of the device appears to carryover some design cues from the original Nexus 5. The red and white versions of the Nexus 5 had a black front with a circular speaker grille that matched the color of the back cover. The Nexus 5X appears to use that same design.
The image also appears to reveal a button or some other feature on the left hand edge of the device that also matches the color of the back cover. Previous leaks show the power and volume buttons on the right had edge, so it is not clear what this might be on the left side.
According to sources, this new mint color will be available at product launch along with black and white.

Deal: HTC selling the 16 GB Nexus 9 for $239.40, 32 GB version only $287.40 (US-only)

Trying to get yourself a brand new Nexus 9 tablet? You are looking to spend $399 to $479… that is, unless you buy it straight from HTC. The Taiwanese manufacturer just went nuts and started selling the Google tablet at amazingly reduced prices. You can now grab the 16 GB version for only $239.40, while the 32 GB iteration will go for $287.40.
Those are some very sweet deals, considering the prices these tablets usually go for. This would be only for the WiFi versions, though. There’s currently no discount on the LTE-enabled pads. Now, do keep in mind there is one significant caveat – the website states “all purchases must be billed and shipped to a valid mailing address in the 50 United States and the District of Columbia only.” Pretty straight forward.

All things considered, the Nexus 9 is a very nifty tablet to have. It managed to get a 9/10 in our review, which places it well above many other competitors. And even though its an aging device, it continues to hold its own pretty well.
The Nexus 9 packs a Tegra K1 processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 8.9 2048x1536p display, an 8 MP rear camera, a 1.6 MP front shooter and a 6700 mAh battery. It’s certainly no weakling, and at this price point it happens to be a very good deal too. Just make sure you act fast if you want to jump in on this deal, because we are not sure how long it will stick around. Are any of you signing up?!

Google goes into detail about the latest security update for Nexus devices and AOSP
Nexus devices received a new OTA update this week (Build LMY48M), which fixes some security issues. Now, Google is going into more detail on exactly what those fixes were.
There are a total of eight vulnerabilities on the list with one to have been exploited in the wild. It is unclear if it was just someone rooting their device and trying it or if it was used maliciously.

Ars Technica say the two critical fixes will address vulnerabilities found in the libstagefright Android media library. These allowed users to execute harmful code on to users’ devices. Google has also been pushing manufactures and carriers to release Stagefright fixes over the past few months.
Mitigation Techniques Used To Prevent Exploitation:
- Remote exploitation for many issues on Android versions 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and higher is mitigated by enhancements in the Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) algorithm used in those versions. Android 5.0 improved ASLR by requiring PIE (position-independent executable) for all dynamically linked executables further strengthening the ASLR protection. We encourage all users to update to the latest version of Android where possible.
- The Android Security team is actively monitoring for abuse of issues with Verify Apps and SafetyNet which will warn about potentially harmful applications about to be installed. Device “rooting” tools are prohibited within Google Play. To protect users who install applications from outside of Google Play, Verify Apps is enabled by default and will warn users about known Rooting applications. Verify Apps will block installation of known “malicious” applications that exploit a privilege escalation vulnerability. If such an application has already been installed, Verify Apps will attempt to automatically remove any such applications and notify the user.
- As appropriate, Google has updated the Hangouts and Messenger applications so that media is not automatically passed to vulnerable processes (such as Mediaserver.)

LG Nexus 5 shows up on leaked internal slides
Google is announcing two new Nexus devices this year, one manufactured by Huawei and the other by LG. The new LG Nexus 5 has been leaked multiple times but nothing concrete as surfaced as of yet.
What appears to be an internal slide dubbed ‘Project N3’ shows the next Nexus 5 made by LG in its full final form. The image hows the front and back of the device and once again we see the fingerprint sensor that seems certain to be part of the final build now given how much it has been leaked.
As well as confirming the physical appearance of the LG Nexus 5, the internal slide leak also comes with some specs that confirm the 5.2-inch full HD (1080p) display, which will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor. The leak does state, however, that the device will only have 2GB of RAM, which is contrary to the 3GB we have been hearing, all supported by a 2,700mAh battery.
